Portland’s Albina district was once a center for Black musicians in this country - producing some classic jazz, soul and gospel albums and bands. The newest record in Albina Music Trust’s catalog features Portland-based producers remixing some of the city’s historic music. Music producer Tony Ozier and DJ Jumbo join us to share some of the music and talk about the collaboration.

NW vocal powerhouse Arietta Ward has assembled some of the finest Musical Artisans to help her spread Soul, Funk, R&B, and positivity to the masses along with her journey founding and fronting her own band,Mz. Etta’s World. Her diverse musical background and versatility have allowed her to be able to perform in various configurations with many artists such as Esperanza Spalding, the late West African Master Drummer Obo Addy, Linda Hornbuckle, Curtis Salgado, Tony Ozier, Tyrone Hendrix, Farnell Newton as well as starting out with her beloved mother, famed NW legend, late pianist, Janice Marie Scroggins. While many labels of music exist, Arietta doesn’t define herself by any particular genre. Some would call her Neo-Soul/Blues, others Funk, and still others R&B. However, Arietta is more focused on content and the responsibility that she believes every artist has “Be mindful of how you deliver. Be mindful of your intent while delivering your messages. I’m six feet across the table in the Artichoke Cafe from composer, producer, singer, multi-instrumentalist, mentor and scenemaker…the man who introduced the Dookie Jam to Portland and who has just finished a run of releasing twenty songs in twenty consecutive weeks with “What Is Love” Featuring Rain Ezra… I’m talking about Tony Ozier…that tall, lean gentleman who has been an important part of music in Oregon for over a decade. It's people like Tony who have managed to keep busy even though live performances are off the table for the foreseeable future. Let’s find out how he does it.
We are back to the Skype machine this week but we’ll be back at Artichoke Music next week with a conversation with Tony Ozier. Right now we’re going to talk with Lady A. Not the band that used to call themselves lady Antebellum, but the Soul and Blues singer from Seattle who has been calling herself Lady A for decades, has made many appearances in Portland including many times at the Waterfront Blues Festival.. I’m sure you’ve heard about the dustup between them. Lady A will be filling in all the details along with her producer John Oliver (a non-British John Oliver). Lady Antebellum changed the name of their band after the massive anti-racist demonstrations after the murder of George Floyd. Antebellum being the period of time before the Civil War, when slavery was legal. You’ll have to ask them why they chose a name that celebrates that period of time. What happened when Lady A, the singer found out that Lady Antebellum decided to call themselves Lady A? Let’s find out.
He's simply one of the best musicians I've met. A great song writer, musician, producer, engineer...and a solid dude. It's a conversation I've wanted to have on the podcast for a while. When you hear his sound on record, it's recognizable for sure. His releases include Keep The Funk Alive, Beats Galore Vol.1 & Vol.2, and the Tone Tuesdays series. We talk about all that, the Dookie Jam and so much. Peep the latest episode of the Klyph Notes podcast with my guest Tony Ozier. July 15, 2016 Well the Blues Festival is over and it’s time to get back to the normal cycle of OMN Coffeeshop Conversations right here in World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan in Portland. With me in the place is drummer Tyrone Hendrix and if you have heard funky music around here, you most likely have heard him…with Liv Warfield, Doo-Doo Funk, Farnell Newton, you name it and he has provided the means for you to shake everything you got. He has a new album called Rhythm On Life Vol 1. It just came out and since he calls it Vol. 1 he must have Vol 2 already in mind. The cream of Portland soul and funk are on it: Jarod Lawson, Tony Ozier, Farnell, Saeeda Wright, Nafisaria Scroggins-Thomas..i could do on and on.
April 16, 2015 Tony Ozier is the King of Doo Doo Funk, the Monarch of the Dookie Jam, and is also known as Dookie Green. And he is one of the busiest music producers in Oregon -- about to unleash a new album of Funk-related material on us (due in May) called Speed of Sound, in addition to working on a new album from Janice Scroggins’ daughter, Arietta Ward, among others, and producing tunes on Farnell Newton’s new album. Listen to one below. I wrote the first story on the Dookie Jam in 2007…it’s still going strong every month. And here he is again!
Tony Ozier is a driving force of funk and soul in the pacific northwest. We sat down with him this week to talk about The Doo Doo Funk All Stars, FNBEATSGALORE, his musical history, his first gig in Portland, relationship advice, his first concert, kids, church, bladed weapons, Star Wars, and the doo doo finger. Too soon! Too soon! What are we doing here again, eulogizing one of our musical icons? And yet, there it was: Thursday's news about the death of Prince. This man meant so much to dancers, deviants and DJs.XRAY-FM radio host and DJ for Lifesavas Rev Shines started us down the path. He's scheduled to work at a Three Kings night next month, featuring the music of Prince alongside Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. He says it's going to be nuts.“It's making me do my homework,” Rev told us. “I grabbed everything I could find.”As Portland's Hollywood Theatre gears up for a Thursday showing of “Purple Rain,” and Voodoo Doughnuts cranks out a line of purple-frosted, raspberry-filled donuts in honor of the late, genre-busting genius, we went out to talk to two guys carrying the funk forward: Trumpet guru Farnell Newton and funk bandleader Tony Ozier. They joined forces two years ago as the record label FN Beats Galore. Their celebrated lineup, Othership Connection, had a big gig opening for George Clinton this month. And they join in the global remembrance of Prince.“It's a part of the lineage of the music that we play,” said Farnell. We chatted them up about what Prince meant to funk, and what's new with FN Beats. They're hatching plans for a festival of black music this fall — something they promise will showcase Portland's best. Take a listen.
This week on State of Wonder we have stories of love, loss, law and looking back.Full story: http://www.opb.org/radio/programs/stateofwonder/segment/prince-protests-pnca-pica-new-building-bradford/The Passing Of The Purple OneWe can’t quite believe we’re once again eulogizing a musical icon, but music fans have been thrown into mourning after Thursday’s news about the death of Prince. We talk with the DJ Rev Shines and musicians Farnell Newton and Tony Ozier about the role the legend played in their musical paths, as well as look at some of the ways Prince pushed gender, genre, and the world at large.Reflecting On Art And LossHost April Baer reflects on the loss of Oregon painter Rick Bartow, the death of Merle Haggard, and the passing of her own father. Sometimes art is the conduit to grief.Meet The BradfordsAs a single mother in New York City, Katherine Bradford raised two children and pursued the life of a painter. She succeeded at both activities. One of those children grew up to be the Portland author and filmmaker Arthur Bradford. And now, at age 73, Katherine is blowing up in the art world. April sat down with mother and son in preview of Katherine's show at Adams and Ollman Gallery (April 22–June 3) to discuss her newfound success and how their work is connected.PICA Gets Huge New DigsFor 21 years, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art has been a pied piper on the art scene, leading audiences into overlooked parts of town and transforming empty warehouses into art hot spots for events like the Time-Based Arts Festival. Now a patron has bought a 16,000-square foot complex near NE Williams and Broadway and is turning it over to PICA rent free. What will this mean for a roving band of arts instigators who’ve staked their identity on impermanence? We have exclusive video from a drone fly thru, because drones+art=awesome.Protests At PNCAIf you passed by Portland’s North Park Blocks this week, you surely noticed the protesters: dozens of students and staff at Pacific Northwest College of Art marched to ask for changes in the college’s hiring and financial practices. The protesters say the school's treatment of part-time, short-contract instructors has consequences for what happens in the classroom. We'll hear from organizers and the college administration, which is taking first steps to cease the protest. The Slants And The Supreme Court?Portland band The Slants are currently in dispute with the United States Patent and Trade Office, which has refused to grant a trademark for the band's name, citing racist connotations. The band, made up of Asian-American musicians, say that they're reclaiming the term. Now the patent office has appealed to the Supreme Court. If the court takes it up, it could have ramifications far beyond the band.Drag And DanceNext weekend, two of the Northwest’s most ambitious drag queens are presenting full length shows that blend dance, drag, comedy blistering soundscapes, and utter hijinkx … with wigs the size of Volkswagons. Kaj-Anne Pepper started out as the youngest member of the infamous performance art drag troupe Sissy Boy in the mid-aughts and has since matured into Portland’s youngest grand dame. His show is called “D.I.V.A. Practice” (Apr. 29–May 1). And Seattle artist Cherdonna Shinatra (Jody Keuhner) was described by Seattle’s alt-weekly The Stranger as an “uncategorizable spectacle” when it gave her a Genius Award last year. She will bring the show “Worth My Salt” to Portland Center Stage from Apr. 29–May 1. Jazz TownWe're sharing excerpts from KMHD's Oregon Experience documentary Jazz Town. In this segment, we hear from those with ties to the historic Albina neighborhood and the jazz scene that thrived there throughout the 50s and 60s. Find more at the Jazz Town page.

This might be it for a while for me. I'm about to innovate and pop some more things off in the near future that I need focus squarely on right now. Any time you want to get at me, leave a message here or hit me up at www.myspace.com/djsmoothkool. This is the forth (but most definitely not the last) installment of The Neo Soul Experience series. This is one of my favorites thus far. I tried not to mess with it too much but I did have to flip a couple of songs, DJ Smooth Kool style. Before I go, I just have a few words on behalf of DJs. Most people do not realize that a DJ (Kool Herc) is what started what we know as Hip-Hop. If it wasn't for a DJ a lot of what goes on today wouldn't be happening. But, DJs get the least amount of respect in the industry. Why is that? We craft our skills so much, it looks easy to everybody else so nobody wants to pay good for standing behind a table all night while everybody else drinks and mingle. Then when everybody is either sitting at a restaurant, laid up, or sleep, we are just unloading the gear that we loaded, unloaded and loaded again. Sooooooooo, BIG UPS and mad PROPS to all of the DJs out here in the Universe doing your thing. Keep doing what we do. And to all the artists, keep doing what ya'll do. You see??? We need each other. This goes out to the DJ The clubs get crunk of the songs that we play Please hit play and see what he or she say If they on Fire, hit the replay DJ...........................Smooth Kool Playlist follows: 1.
