Conversación en La Catedral es la tercera novela del autor peruano Mario Vargas Llosa, publicada en 1969 y reconocida como una de sus grandes obras junto a La ciudad y los perros, La casa verde, La guerra del fin del mundo y La fiesta del Chivo. Escrita entre París, Lima, Washington, Londres y finalmente Puerto Rico, la novela en un comienzo fue pensada para publicarse en dos partes por la extensión de sus páginas, hecho que solo ocurrió en la primera edición. Según Vargas Llosa, ninguna otra novela le ha dado más trabajo, entre revisiones y reescrituras. Asegura que «si tuviera que salvar del fuego una sola de las que he escrito, salvaría esta».​ Fue incluida en la lista de las 100 mejores novelas en español del siglo XX del periódico español El Mundo.La novela es un retrato crudo de la corrupción moral y la represión política que vive el Perú bajo la dictadura del general Manuel A. Odría. El cerebro de esa represión es Cayo Bermúdez o Cayo Mierda.El protagonista, Santiago Zavala o Zavalita, es un joven de familia pudiente, que estudia en la Universidad de San Marcos, entonces uno de los núcleos de la oposición estudiantil que enfrentaba a la dictadura. Su padre, don Fermín Zavala, apodado Bola de Oro, es un próspero empresario que hace negocios muy rentables beneficiándose de la corrupción gubernamental. Zavalita se relaciona con los estudiantes comunistas e incluso es llevado a la comisaría, ante el escándalo de su familia; luego trabaja como periodista y se suma a la bohemia de sus compañeros de trabajo. Llega incluso a casarse. En este episodio seguimos a Martyn Percy para entender una tesis tan provocadora como útil: el genio anglicano está en su hibridación. La Navidad en la Iglesia de Inglaterra toma prestado, adapta y “domestica” prácticas de otras tradiciones: habla de “Midnight Mass”, celebra villancicos a la luz de las velas, y produce liturgias pastorales que funcionan como puerta de entrada a la fe.  Entramos, primero, al fenómeno de Christingle: un rito popular (naranja, vela, cinta roja y frutos) orientado a niños, que comenzó como iniciativa de recaudación y terminó marcando para muchos el inicio real de la temporada. Luego nos movemos al “rostro global” del anglicanismo: Nine Lessons and Carols y su proyección mediática desde Cambridge, un ejemplo de cómo la liturgia se vuelve memoria compartida y “religión implícita” en sociedades secularizadas.  Pero Percy insiste en una tensión clave: el clero suele vivir la Navidad con ambivalencia, porque la fiesta activa a la vez corrientes sagradas (Encarnación, caridad, esperanza) y seculares (consumo, nostalgia, vacaciones). Precisamente ahí, dice, el anglicanismo suele estar “en su mejor versión”: una Navidad de umbral bajo y recompensa alta, donde el Niño de Belén vuelve a ser “para todos”.

¿Cómo una misma fecha logra despertar recuerdos, esperanzas y emociones tan profundas en personas tan distintas? Recibimos en el club de las 'Miss Experiencia' a una de esas mujeres que han levantado desde los cimientos los barrios periféricos de Sevilla. Se llama Toñi, tiene 82 años y es una de las protagonistas del documental 'Ellas en la ciudad', dirigido por Reyes Gallegos, que cuenta la lucha de las mujeres para llevar a sus barrios servicios básicos como el agua corriente, la luz, un centro de salud o una biblioteca. Toñi nació en Lebrija pero ha vivido la mayor parte de su vida en el barrio de Parque Alcosa. Sirvió en casas cocinando, cuidando y limpiando; probó suerte en Alemania; y a su vuelta a España, pasados los 40 años, se sacó el Graduado Escolar y le pilló el gusto a las letras porque escribe poemas y hace teatro. Eso sí, siempre desde un punto de vista reivindicativo porque nunca olvidó de dónde viene.

Hace unos años, escuchando a Antoni Bolinches en una entrevista, me parecía que cada una de sus palabras me describía. Sentía que su verdad, era una que yo vivía y a la que nunca le había puesto palabras. Desde ese entonces, soñaba con traerlo a Abierta Mente. De él me gusta su franqueza, me gusta que sea un hombre hablando de estos temas, y sobre todo, admiro que lo haga desde su amplia experiencia. Es decir, Antoni no se está inventando nada, como especialista en parejas por tantos años, él SABE de qué habla.

Aun antes de nacer, éramos parte de una familia: la familia de nuestros padres celestiales. Ese modelo continúa en la tierra. Las familias aquí, en su mejor versión, tienen por designio replicar el modelo perfecto del cielo. Desde luego, no hay garantías de que las familias terrenales serán ideales o siquiera funcionales, pero, como enseñó el presidente Henry B. Eyring, las familias “brindan a los hijos de Dios la mejor oportunidad de ser acogidos en el mundo con el único amor en la tierra que se acerca a lo que sentimos en el cielo: el amor de los padres” (“Congregar a la familia de Dios”, Liahona, mayo de 2017, pág. 20). Sabiendo que las familias son imperfectas y que están sujetas a los ataques del adversario, Dios envió a Su Hijo Amado para redimirnos y sanar a nuestras familias; y mandó profetas de los últimos días con una proclamación para defender y fortalecer a las familias. Si seguimos a los profetas y ponemos la fe en el Salvador, aun cuando las familias terrenales no alcancen el ideal divino, hay esperanza para las familias tanto en la tierra como en el cielo.
