“Even though this is a book about snake girls and lizard boys — it's about universal experiences: we can't change what's happening, but you never know when being kind will change somebody else. ,” Jonathan Hill's an award-winning cartoonist, illustrator, and educator in Portland, Oregon — and a returning guest - to celebrate the launch of his latest graphic novel: “Lizard Boy 2: The Most Perfect Summer Ever.” While the sci-fi title might have you scratching your head, this YA sequel is actually a beautiful, compelling story of self-acceptance, community, and family — we can't recommend it enough for parents and kids alike, as well as it's prequel “Tales of a Seventh-Grade Lizard Boy.” Jonathan is HALF Vietnamese American - and while the story is about an immigrant family, community acceptance, and belonging - Jonathan's work, his characters and their journey are important for all of us to be reading at this particular moment in our nation.  Jonathan's work has been published by Walker Books, First Second, and Oni Press - and featured at ABC New Voices, YALSA and JLG selections, and won awards like the 2012 Carla Cohen Free Speech Award, the 2021 Believer Book Award for Graphic Literature, and the 2022 Junior Library Guild Selection. Jonathan's also an accomplished cartoonist with clients like Microsoft, the Portland Trailblazers, the Viet Nam Literature Project, the Inlander, Fantagraphics Books, Dark Horse Comics, Tor.com, The Believer Magazine, Literary Arts, and Powell's City of Books. AND he's been the staff illustrator to The Asian Reporter since 2007. Jonathan also teaches comics and visual narrative - having taught at the Pacific Northwest College, the Oregon College of Art and Craft. He graduated as valedictorian from the prestigious Savannah College of Art & Design, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Literary Arts and chairs the Youth Programs Advisory Council.  Jonathan's an important voice, creating important work for not just our kids, but for all of us to be learning from — so be sure to check out his work. Portland artist Arvie Smith is known for colorful, larger-than-life oil paintings that explore oppression and injustice against Black Americans through symbolism and visual tropes. He’s also a professor emeritus at Pacific Northwest College of Art after a 35-year tenure. His murals can be seen on buildings in North Portland and at the Donald E. Long Juvenile Center, where he spent time teaching art to incarcerated youth. Despite being in his mid-80s, Smith is far from retired — just last year, he received a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. The work he created during that fellowship is currently on display in Chicago. Titled “Crossing Clear Creek,” the exhibit explores Smith’s childhood memories and experience of race in rural Texas and Los Angeles. Smith joins us to talk about his life and work.

In this episode of The Connection , we speak with Michael Orwick, an oil painter whose work is deeply inspired by the unique light and atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest. Michael shares his artistic journey, from studying illustration at the Pacific Northwest College of Art to transitioning into landscape painting. He describes his creative process, which focuses on capturing fleeting moments of illumination during sunrise and sunset, using layers and a mix of warm and cool colors. Michael also explains how his style leans towards impressionism, using optical mixing and broken brushwork to create energy and movement in his art.He draws inspiration not only from the Pacific Northwest but from his global travels, including a year-long trip where he painted with children from orphanages around the world. We are thrilled to incorporate some of Michaels work in our upcoming ride guide and possible future collaborations with Michael and other artists alike.-------------------------------------------------This podcast is produced by Dirty Freehub, a nonprofit organization that publishes hand-curated (and great!) gravel cycling Ride Guides. About Rachelle Reichert Rachelle Reichert is a visual artist and art educator based in the San Francisco Bay Area, California (Chochenyo Ohlone territory). Rachelle works in a variety of media to explore landscapes permanently altered by climate change and industrialization. She is interested in earth observation satellite imagery- how nature is composed in images and then circulated to a public, algorithmic visions, and natural systems to view how nature is manipulated by human behavior. Her research focuses on sites of specific extracted materials: salt, clay, lithium. Artworks embody multi-scale complexities of observing the natural world, both human and machine, and the emotional connections between the two. Artwork is included in many public and private collections, including the Center for Art+Environment Archives at the Nevada Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Archive, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Library, Facebook, and Adobe, Inc. “I remember someone asked ‘why do you only draw white people?' It really put a mirror to me and I was like, ‘why is that?' I think it's the culture I grew up around — I didn't have that opportunity to see myself.” Jonathan Hill is an award-winning cartoonist, illustrator, and educator living in Portland, OR. Jonathan is the creator of numerous graphic novels - including Americus, Odessa, and his latest - Tales of a Seventh-Grade Lizard Boy. And your guess of which of this is about sci-fi dystopia is probably wrong - but all of his works hit on some pretty relevant themes of family and belonging. Jonathan's work does that thing that great fiction does - wrapping an important theme in a seemingly fantastic narrative. While there is a Vietnamese American family as part of the story, let's just say the main characters are also not from around here. In our chat we really got to understand the why behind so many of Jonathan's story telling choices. We'd definitely recommend Tales of a Seventh-Grade Lizard Boy for any of us who have ever just wanted to belong - or for folks who need a better understanding of what it's like to not belong. Beyond being a graphic novelist, Jonathan's an accomplished cartoonist with clients like Microsoft, the Portland Trailblazers, the Vietnam Literature Project, the Inlander, Fantagraphics Books, Dark Horse Comics, Tor.com, The Believer Magazine, Literary Arts, and Powell's City of Books. AND he's been the staff illustrator to The Asian Reporter since 2007. Jonathan also teaches comics and visual narrative — having taught at Pacific Northwest College of Art, Oregon College of Art was Writer in Residence through Literary Arts' Writers in the Schools program — and he currently serves on the Board of Directors of Literary Arts and chairs the Youth Programs Advisory Council. It goes without saying, Jonathan's one of those empathetic creators whose work you'll want to keep an eye on. Episode Summary In this episode of our podcast, we hear from Dr. Louise Rose, ND, and Aiana Harley. Dr. Rose  believes in nature's ability to heal, and that has led her to work with others to help them rediscover their inner vigor and enhance their energy while also helping them become more emotionally resilient. Ariana Harley works as an essential oil educator. She has a strong belief in the power of self-love, joy, and the abundance of good health and happiness. Ariana is able to help clients in the physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial worlds because she has spent the past three years studying transpersonal  psychology and counseling. Dr. Rose brings up that when we feel comfortable, we feel linked to others, we can look others in the eye, we can evaluate their reaction to us and receive safety signals, we are grounded, and we are more capable of experiencing. Peppermint is one of the essential oils that will oxygenate your brain and really bring you back into your body if you're in a disassociated state. Ariana Harley introduces a Chinese medicinal acupressure point called Shen Men. It is said to be "heaven's gate”. It is quite useful to work on the Vegus nerve in order to bring us into a balanced emotional state. Ariana hints that grief is truly a longing, as opposed to the sorrow and anguish that many of us associate with it. Grief has a very unique method of acting in our brains in that it's a motivational process where we're genuinely desiring something. That grief can sometimes be rage, occasionally sadness, and sometimes heartbreaking aches. There is an emotional response, and the brain thinks. Consequently, this is what I mean by saying that your brain desires something that it can not own. Ariana makes sense on a tight line when it comes to educating our brains that a shift has occurred, therefore it's crucial to feel your emotions, as we've established.  Dr. Louise Rose discusses how healing from trauma means processing your grief, and emotions, and returning to that nervous system curve means coming down the other side of the curve into that safe zone where we sense emotional regulation again. She briefly discussed that stress and exhaustion can be managed by regulating the neurological system, which is one of the most important ways in which we deal with these large and powerful emotions. Dr. Louise broaches problems with their physical and mental well-being, which are almost certainly linked to their trauma, including functional intestinal issues, muscular tension, and headaches caused by insomnia and fibromyalgia. Medina discusses her methods for fluidly and colorfully moving through personal history and tough subject matter in order to bring forth joy and accessibility. Both Medina and Muhammad discuss so much more about community and possibilities for future archives and generations, and there is so much to glean from their perspectives. Laura Medina Laura Camila Medina is an interdisciplinary artist born in Bogotá, Colombia. This episode I speak with artist Lehuauakea. Lehua is a māhū or Queer, Kanaka Maoli/Native Hawaiian and mixed heritage interdisciplinary artist and kapa maker from Pāpaʻikou on Moku O Keawe, or the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. We caught up this summer on the ancestral lands of the Tewa/Towa people of what is now known as Santa Fe, NM during their residency at the School for Advanced Research this summer where Lehua was working on making some large scale Kapa and other projects. We chat about the intention Lehua takes in how their culture is embedded in all they make, their ways of practicing art and producing kapa, and how the act of making keeps Lehua connected deeper to their land and ancestry. Opening the episode we hear an audio recording from the late Kanaka Maoli activist Haunani Kay Trask. This excerpt is from a speech Trask gave On the 100th anniversary of the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, in 1993, where Trask famously spoke in front of Iolani Palace. About Lehuauakea: Lehuauakea is a māhū mixed-Native Hawaiian interdisciplinary artist and kapa maker from Pāpaʻikou on Moku O Keawe, the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. Lehua's Kānaka Maoli family descends from several lineages connected to Maui, Kauaʻi, Kohala, and Hāmākua where their family resides to this day. Through a range of craft-based media, their art serves as a means of exploring cultural and biological ecologies, spectrums of Indigeneity, and what it means to live within the context of contemporary environmental degradation. With a particular focus on the labor-intensive making of ʻohe kāpala (carved bamboo printing tools), kapa (bark cloth), and natural pigments, Lehua is able to breathe new life into patterns and traditions practiced for generations. Through these acts of resilience that help forge deeper relationships with ʻāina, this mode of Indigenous storytelling is carried well into the future. They have participated in several solo and group shows around the Pacific Ocean, and recently opened their first curatorial research project, DISplace, at the Five Oaks Museum in Portland, Oregon. The artist is currently based between the Pacific Northwest and Pāpaʻikou after earning their Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting with a minor in Art + Ecology at Pacific Northwest College of Art.
