Hey well-read baddies! This week we're back with another #Black365 minisode and are joined by Cecily (@CecilyAlexa)—singer, songwriter, and one of the 13,000 members of the recording academy. The Washington, DC native has a rich, soothing sound rooted in mid-century Soul and Jazz. Often drawing comparisons to Minnie Riperton and Amel Larrieux, her music is imbued with a unique sensuality that informs not only her vocal approach, but also her self-reflecting lyrics. Cecily has been heralded for her poetic writing style. Grounded in an easy vulnerability, her lyrics speak of deep lessons around self-acceptance, freedom, community and love. We dive into her creative process, how All About Love by Bell Hooks shaped her latest project, and why music is basically a spell (so choose your bops wisely). 01:52 Introduction and Shout Out Corner 3:42 Coffee Break 31:03 Get into the Guest Books mentioned and recs- https://bookshop.org/shop/shewellread We can't wait to hear from you! :) Please send any questions or comments about this episode to shewellread@gmail.com or use the form at the bottom of the SWR Podcast page: https://www.shewellread.com/contact OR leave us a Voice Note at https://www.speakpipe.com/shewellread‬ Follow SHE WELL READ! Born and raised in Oakland, California, Simone Telease found her love for music at a very young age. Her parents introduced her to a vast array of songs and albums, so it was not hard for Simone to fall in love with artists like Amel Larrieux, Brandy, and Amerie. Shortly after, she joined her elementary school choir which eventually led her to begin singing and writing her own songs. She would often spend hours in her room writing songs and singing aloud until her parents told her to quiet down.
At the age of 23, Simone left everything she once knew and moved to Atlanta, GA to pursue her dreams of becoming a household name in the music industry. She first gained exposure to a broader audience in 2019 when social media influencer, Norman Freeman, posted a snippet of her single “Dishonest” on instagram. The song became an instant success overnight, garnering over thousands and thousands of streams. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nalasden88/message

Welcome to Episode #10 of the 90s State of Mind podcast - a collaborative project between 4ever in Electric Dreams and Blue-in-Green:RADIO. This podcast series sees Imran (London, UK) and Rhonda (California, USA) delve into some of their favourite releases from the 90s and this week, the pair revisit the one-&-only album from incomparable Groove Theory. Released in 1995 through Epic Records - and spearheaded by the classic single 'Tell Me' - the pairing of vocalist Amel Larrieux and producer Bryce Wilson resulted in one of 90s R&B's most beloved projects. Having achieved moderate success upon release, the duo disbanded a few years after their album release and although there have been efforts to resurrect the Groove Theory name, no new full-lengths have come to fruition. The 90s was certainly a prolific decade for each member with Amel Larrieux having established herself as a solo star with the first of what would be five solo albums having been released in 1999 along with multiple guest appearances on projects by The Roots and Guru. Wilson continued his run of excellent productions jumping behind the boards for colossal names like Mary J Blige, Changing Faces and Toni Braxton. Imran & Rhonda delve deep into this definitive 90s R&B album looking at the project, remixes, b-sides, solo projects and efforts to revive the group with vocalist Makeda Davis. www.4everinelectricdreams.com/ Blue-in-Green:RADIO is a London-based online internet radio station which celebrates 21st century soul, jazz, funk, Latin & hip-hop music. www.blueingreenradio.com TuneIn: bit.ly/2LBK0BD

Electric and double bass man, George Farmer, is a player with an all new blend. He began his musical training at a young age, receiving his earliest musical lessons from his father, legendary jazz trumpeter Art Farmer. In a house filled with American Soul as well as classical music, Farmer benefited from a unique blend of musical influences and began playing the electric and upright basses at the same time. With a curriculum that included conservatory training at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, private study, and a demanding live performance schedule, Farmer absorbed everything from Schubert's Serenades to Bootsy's Rubberband bass grooves.Farmer moved permanently to the United States in 1997 and soon began getting calls for high profile dates. His first gigs in New York City included the "Young Lions of Jazz" ensemble with Delfeayo Marsalis and Mark Whitfield, as well as serving as the musical director for California based producer, Don Freeman (The Pointer Sisters, Bill Withers). In the year 2000, Farmer became the bass player for the legendary, Benny Golson. Farmer toured in Europe and the U.S. with Golson, and recorded on the 2000 Legend Recordings release, "The Athens Sessions".Meanwhile, Farmer has become a sought after sideman and studio musician stateside as well as in Europe. In the year 2001, Farmer spent 3 months touring with Wolfgang Ambros, one of Europe's most beloved rock stars, and Farmer also recorded on Ambros' certified-gold album, "Hopelessly Self-conscious," that same year. He returned to Europe the following summer, where he played with world renowned vocalist, Natalie Cole. In 2003 Farmer signed on as the bass player for 2004 Grammy-nominated Artist, Amel Larrieux. Featured on both electric and upright basses, Farmer's playing on Larrieux's sophomore album "Bravebird" (Warner Brothers) is a focal point. Since the album's release in 2003, he has toured Japan and the United States with Larrieux, while still maintaining a busy performance and recording schedule that includes performances with emerging artist, Darius DeHaas, as a part of the "American Songbook: Stevie Wonder" Series at Lincoln Center.George's love for accompanying singers led him to him to become a first-call player for numerous Broadway shows (Spring Awakening, Memphis, Fun Home, to name just a few), and he currently holds the bass chair for the Broadway smash Ain’t Too Proud.George’s websiteGeorge Farmer on InstagramGeorge Farmer on Facebook"Ain't Too Proud" websiteSupport the show (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=9JCBNUCRNRVKY&source=url)

The moral humiliation  forced on proud Black people was illustrated in the British conquest of Ashanti.  The reigning  Asantahene had never beenconqured His armies hat repeatedly driven back the British, but the British finally triumphed after five years by breaking their woud and overwhelmed him by numbers and superior weapons. They promised him peace and honor, but they demanded a public act of submission. **Tim says, I have to ask "Why do whites hate, demonize, fear and look down on blacks?"   {Amel Larrieux says: Whites not even material self-interest. After all, plenty of poor whites are racist. About all they have to show for it is this: “At least I'm not black.” And that gives it away: it is about white self-image.  My current understanding of the white self-image: Narcissism means to not having no true sense of self-worth; they put up a false front to persuade the world, and most of all themselves, that they do have worth. They mainly do this through money, but also by putting down others to make themselves look better. Deep down they know the whole thing is a lie, which makes them all the more desperate to uphold the front.

Abiah spent his childhood with his single mother, an accomplished musician who accompanied the late operatic Baritone William Warfield in earlier years. She introduced him to the singers who would become Abiah’s influences: Sarah Vaughn, Anita Baker and later Nina Simone. “They were great singers and song interpreters,” he says. “They were text painters and I believe that’s a lost art.” Abiah honed his skills through the years as a background singer for artists George Michael, Chuck Mangione, Amel Larrieux and Yolanda Adams while cutting his chops in opera as a voice major in college. By the time his debut album was released in 2006, Abiah already knew exactly what he brought to the table — a warm, engaging voice and unassailable taste in music. His debut album was an underground smash. His video Love For a While, a duet with Shanice Wilson became a hit on VH1 Soul and BET J. Not completely vacant from the music since his debut album, Abiah got practically handed an unexpected cottage industry, when he became an in-demand vocal coach. Initial inquiries from singer-friends impressed by his sound and range has blossomed into a side-business that finds him coaching major label artists, up-and-comers, solid pros hankering to rise up to that proverbial next level, and musical game show contestants hoping to impress celebrity judges with noticeably increased prowess. He also made an appearance on an Emmy nominated episode of MTV's MADE. But along with his passion for coaching artists and creating great music in the studio, performing is what Abiah loves most. “There is nothing like feeling and seeing the atmosphere change in a room,” he says. “It’s so important to be in touch with your audience. They come to hear music but leave with their lives changed because of the music. That is my job and calling." The new album, Life As A Ballad, boasts of gems like the gorgeous opener,"September", a well orchestrated melange of achingly mature lyric writing full throated, flowing and tautly controlled vocal drama, lush Beatles-esque harmonies and transcendent, transporting melodicism. There is also the poignant "Doves", a modern interpretation of a Prince classic, as well as seven other self-penned originals. But it’s hardly business as usual for this Rochester, NY native. It never is for Abiah, whose irrepressible spirit, engaging humor, and confident charisma once led Billboard magazine to call him “a singer with an innate ability for passionate songwriting that one cannot learn.” To help him capture the songs’ intimacy, Abiah turned to Blue Note recording artist Robert Glasper, who happens to be his cousin, guitarist/arranger Marvin Sewell, his long time collaborator, and co-producers Keith Witty and Ulysses Owens, Jr. “We definitely have a great chemistry in the studio which is why we were able to record the entire album in one day. Talk about a quick turn around," Abiah says with a laugh. “Robert added such beautiful fabric to the music. Marvin was overflowing with genius and Keith helped me to find all the "right" things like a mad scientist.” For more info: http://www.indiereviewcd.com https://twitter.com/IndieRevue https://www.instagram.com/indie.review https://www.facebook.com/indie.review --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/indie-review/support

Collette is an R&B singer whose silky voice breezes over hard hitting beats... sometimes a gentle wind, at other times a hurricane of South Carolina soul. She lists among her influences her gospel-singing mother, as well as Ella Fitzgerald, Bill Withers, Jill Scott, Amel Larrieux and Mary J. Blige – a list as varied as her own musical experiences. She began as a pianist and saxophonist in early childhood in her native South Carolina, and wandered into singing as a teen. After spending four years in college at Howard University, singing and soaking up the raw energy of Washington D.C.'s go-go music scene, Collette was finally ready to expose the world to her unique brand of storytelling. Collette released her independent debut Experience Collette in 2008, earning notable radio airplay and attention in the U.S. and abroad. She snagged opening gigs with huge names in urban music, from Chrisette Michele to Talib Kweli, indie soul titan Eric Roberson and more.

Sade is legendary.  When it's all said and done she will be remembered amongst the greats like Michael, Stevie, or whoever else you want to add to that list.  I made this a mix a while back just to have something to listen to but decided to put it out in anticipation for her new album coming out next year.  The server on this site recently crashed so i'll have to upload a bunch of stuff to get it back to normal.  Thank you for your patience.  You'll notice one song isn't Sade but features possibly my favorite female singer of all time Amel Larrieux.  But if you do the math you'll quickly realize why I decided to add that track into the mix.  Thank you for your patience.  Happy Holidays everybody!!

By now you know this show is about all things soulful. From time to time we have featured guest DJs, podcasters, and a healthy dose of international musicians with fierce showmanship! Today's Labor Day Special will help you whistle while you work. We feature the talents of Honey Soul...podcaster, dj, interviewer to the stars. I'm a fan of her podcast which has up close and personal interviews with newsmakers of the soul scene. Find Honey Soul at her homesite, iTunes, and Myspace.com.  Also, she is a regular DJ at Superstation ProjectVibe.net! Be sure to get all the downloads and support her wonderful work via donation and/or online purchase of artist's tracks! We proudly give to you the one and only Honey Soul..... COA   I'm a strong believer in making your own opportunities. In Oct. 2004 I created a site called honeysoul.com. Honeysoul.com's audience consists of a large number of loyal, soul music supporters who actually buy music (yes I know that's a strange concept but I'm not kidding, it still actually happens). In addition to honeysoul.com featuring my own mix of "radio blogs," full CD previews, videos, new releases, and headlines I am very proud of my interviews or "conversations" as I like to call them. I have had the pleasure of talking to Jaguar Wright, Dwele (twice), Wayna, Gaelle, Carmen Rodgers, Lina, Julie Dexter, Darien Brockington (twice), Syleena Johnson, Ladybug Mecca, Stokley Williams (Mint Condition), Jonz, Geno Young, Jon B, Anthony David, Goapele, Frank McComb (twice), Valencia Robinson, Eska, Javier, Esthero, Yewande, Joi, Ron Isley, Lisa Shaw, Van Hunt, Amel Larrieux, Kim Hill, Teena Marie, Donell Jones, Bilal Salaam, Sy Smith, Randevyn, Carol Riddick, Yolanda Johnson and Raheem Devaughn. Who's next? It may be you. If you're a soul artist making meaningful music, let's talk. -Honey-         Honey Soul
