At this point, hip-hop artist Jabee is an Oklahoma City icon, but it's about time to take his profile to a more national level. Thankfully he is in good company to do just that. Earlier this year Jabee announced his signing to hip-hop's prestige indie music label, Mello Music Group. His first release with MMG, the eight-song mini-album The Spirit Is Willing But The Flesh Is Weak—featuring a guest verse by underground rap sensation Quelle Chris and production from the likes of Conductor Williams, Evidence, and Apollo Brown—debuted on streaming services this past Friday. Jabee, fresh off a West Coast flight following a marathon weekend at his Peace Needs OKC conference that included the legendary Chuck D as speaker, graced the Oklahoma Today Podcast with an interview previewing the new release. Also on this week's episode, the editors get cute about their favorite at-home animals, and podvents shows us why Merle Haggard will now forever be an Okie in Muskogee. You won't want to miss it!

Oklahoma City hip-hop artist Jabee Williams is known to dabble in more than a few things at once: music, entrepreneurship, and advocacy to name the main ones. Recently he's added breakfast to his repertoire with the opening of Scrambl'd, an upscale brunch and lunch bar located right next to Jabee's other restaurant venture, Eastside Pizza House. Jabee and business partner Cordell Love joins the show this week to discuss why the duo went into the venture, what some of their favorites on the menu are, and those showstopping floating lamb chops that make diners' heads turn. Also on the show, the editors discuss the first albums they remember buying with their own money, and podvents are a thrill as always. We hope you enjoy!

Oklahoma City's ”East Side" had been a social and economic center for African American life but through gentrification and neglect, the area became a marginalized part of town. In 2016, Jonathan Dodson's Pivot Project selected an abandoned strip mall on Northeast 23rd Street for what would ultimately become the EastPoint Project. The development at Eastpoint gave activist and award-winning rapper Jabee Williams the opportunity to establish Eastside Pizza House alongside other black business owners in a thriving community atmosphere. In today's episode, Jabee shares his story of going from entertainer to activist, preserving history and innovating new business models. Thank you to Oklahoma City's own Jabee for coming on my show for an interview! Jabee talked about his new AM EP, Havoc producing one of his upcoming projects, and being an activist in America. He discussed how police escalate situations, people such as Candace Owens and Hershel Walker hurting the voice of the people, and being arrested around the time of Trayvon Martin murder for wearing a hoodie in an Oklahoma mall. He got into opening up his own pizza restaurant in his neighborhood, wanting to bring Nipsey Hussle down to Oklahoma before he passed away, and being a part owner of the Tower Theatre. Jabee also spoke about record labels dumbing down Hip-Hop today, teaching Hip-Hop Studies at the Academy of Contemporary Music, KD bringing him out to perform for an NBA All Star charity game at halftime while he was still playing with the Thunder in 2011 during the NBA lockout, and winning two Emmy Awards. The deadCenter Film Festival is a place for all types of stories including the short stories found in music videos. One of the festival's most notable short films playing at this year's festival in the SHORTS: OKIE 1 block is the music video, “Jabee: Hope.” Last year, Oklahoma City hip hop artist Jabee released his new album, “This World Is So Fragile And Cruel I'm Glad I Got You.” When considering how to best adapt the music for a video, he pitched the song “Hope” to his collaborator and award-winning casting director, Chris Freihofer, who created a treatment before stepping into the role of director for the music video. Jabee and Freihofer partnered with Windswept Media and WeerNProduction to shoot the video, and by September of 2020, had completed the project. In today's exclusive deadCenter 2021 conversation on The Cinematic Schematic, I talk with Jabee and Freihofer about the autobiographical story behind the music and how Freihofer highlighted OKC's unique setting to match Jabee's vision. You can catch the video playing at Rodeo Cinema today or in deadCenter's Virtual Cinema until the festival's conclusion on Sunday, June 20th at 11:45 PM CST. "All of us are special in some way." Jabee, musical artist and EMMY award winner, sat down with Thomas Hill for a sincere, heartfelt conversation about pain, the power of words, and what it means to be a leader in a highly competitive space. From growing up as "that kid who felt like nobody saw me, or heard my voice", to creating music that speaks for a generation, Jabee has life wisdom born of deeply personal experiences. Through music, he has been given a platform and feels compelled to use his influence to make a difference. "People are listening to me, I need to say something to them and continue to be that voice so they can be heard."
For Black History Month, No Cover is taking a look back at some Black musicians that have been on the show in the past year. You’ll be hearing again from Dr. View, Bartees Strange, Original Flow, and Jabee. They all released really wonderful projects in the last year and they shared some of their stories and experiences that went into their music. Support this podcast

BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the JABEE interview session! We head to the Midwest this week, specifically OKC, to catch up with damn near a renaissance man, as Jabee has his hands dipped in just about everything - from music to venues to food to activism - the list goes on. This chat was particularly interesting given Jabee is part owner in the Tower Theatre, a historic venue located in the Uptown 23rd district of Oklahoma City. We get some real insight on navigating the COVID-era, the recent success of their first, SAFE live event since March and what the outlook is for independent, live music venues and the communities they service. Of course we get into the music as well - his new LP “The World Is So Fragile And Cruel, I’m Glad I Got You” has been making waves the past few months, and we talk about how the collaborations with SLUG of ATMOSPHERE, LIL B THE BASED GOD, STATIK SELEKTAH, WALE and 88 KEYS came about,, as well the intense amount of planning that goes into releasing an industry-grade record as an independent. Yes there’s more, and yes you have to hit play to find out - so go on, press play, BUY some Jabee music today and lock in with that #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACK Recorded live October 18, 2020 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #soundcloud #youtube #spotifypodcast #googlepodcasts #stitcherradio #mixcloud #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard twitter/IG: @southernvangard @jondoeatl @cappuccinomeeks
