Brady Goss used to be the kid Boogie-Woogie piano player. He isn't a kid anymore but in addition to pounding out the Jerry Lee Lewis sound, he's added other genres and techniques. He's playing with Curtis Salgado and also is a part of an Allman Brothers tribute band. His journey has been an interesting one. Paul K Ward recorded and produced from his studio blue. Brady was there and I was at my desk in NW Portland.

After a week off, OMN's Coffeeshop Conversations is back in a big way. Sometimes Coffeeshop Conversations introduces you to new artists or artists you may not have heard of but if you have never heard of Curtis Salgado, God help ya. He's with Paul K Ward at Paul's studio blue. Paul is at the controls and I am beating on my laptop as usual. It occurred to me that I have never introduced Curtis in public, not at the Waterfront Blues Festival….nor anywhere else….and I have introduced hundreds of musicians to tens of thousands of people. One of these days I'd like to stoke up a crowd, already psyched to hear Curtis…and fix that. Meanwhile, ladies and gentlemen, give a big round of ammunition for everybody's favorite favorite Curtis Salgado.

Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

"It's 106 miles to Chicago. . ." You know the rest, especially if you are a fan of the Blues Brothers, the musical comedy invention of John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd and one of the breakout hits of the original Saturday Night Live, earning sold out concert tours, two feature films, platinum albums, and spinoffs and tributes that continue today. A serendipitous meeting of John Belushi with future blues star Curtis Salgado in Eugene during the filming of Animal House gave John the blues bug, as well as the moves. Danny Ackroyd was already a huge blues fan, even buying a blues bar to unwind in after SNL tapings. Put that together and you had some real combustible magic -- and a real boost for blues music and blues musicians at a time it was sorely needed. As Dan Ackroyd put it (in the persona of Elwood Blues) "We're on a mission from God." Mission accomplished! As always find full cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Blues Brothers? The Blues Brothers was a fun (and funny) movie -- and a very quotable one at that. See if you or your friends quoted any of these lines after the movie came out in 1980. https://youtu.be/TrxSM_Gxtqw?si=hJq1l2i9OKtyxFJl The Blues Brothers specialized in excavating superb blues tunes from singers who weren't household words (unless your house had it's own Jake and Elwood). And Jake learned well from his teachers, including Curtis Salgado, that a little ad=libbed naughtiness in the middle of a song always brought a big reaction. Check out this version of Willie Mabon's "I Don't Know" from a 1978 Winterland concert. And man, what a band! https://youtu.be/eBcc7PvXAHg?si=c4K9JH8m8jMUsYHw Blues Brothers 2000 paled in comparison to the original in critical reception and box office, but that isn't really fair given the task (replacing John Belushi). There are some great bits in here and the musical numbers are over the top. https://youtu.be/2eEpcETVV3s?si=dYwZrWy6qTq1kVf1

Curtis is an incredible musician who has played with such notables as Santana, Steve Miller and his act was the inspiration behind John Belushi's creation of the Blues Brothers. But, after being put on pain killers after a gallstone attack, Curtis became addicted and through further medical examination, it was discovered that he had stage 4 cirrhosis of the liver and needed a transplant. 35 years in recovery, Curtis has beaten the odds and is living a clean and sober musical life!

We’ll be returning to the Café at Artichoke Music on Thursday April 8 for an interesting OMN Coffeeshop Conversation with therapist Dino Paris on how the pandemic has effected creativity. But today we’re Skyping with keyboardist Dave Fleschner who has been a big part of many Portland bands. Many people remember him from being on the road with Curtis Salgado for six years. He’s doing a lot of teaching these days as most musicians have been doing during the pandemic. One of these days I’ll be able to do one of these things and never have the pandemic come up in conversation…coffeeshop or not. Dave has been a fixture in the Soul/Blues/Funk/Jazz scene around here and it’s a good time to say hello.

What Is Timber Rock? Ask Scott Pemberton.

Through the lens of some of Portland's most influential music scenes—think Satyricon, X-Ray Cafe, and Jimmy Mak's—Scott Pemberton has channelled a ray of sunlight he calls “timber rock.” That's the name of his latest album, which came out last year, but it's also the name of the subgenre he is pioneering, harvesting funk, grunge, jazz, blues, and hippie jam vibes with the epic sweep of his roaring guitar. The resulting music is both tight and loose; recognizable as part of a lineage yet unorthodox; full of evolutions and improvisational concepts that may come and go. For some bands, the live show is a place for experimentation, the record a place for distillation. For Pemberton, even the album is just a slice of time."I came from very much a jazz background, so I think I naturally approached the songs that way," he says. "Within jazz, there is more of a skeletal song structure, that then every time you play the song, you add the flesh.”Born and raised in Portland, the guitarist spent time in legendary jazz drummer Mel Brown's band and has worked with heavy-hitting blues and soul vocalists Curtis Salgado and Linda Hornbuckle. But Pemberton also wears his classic rock influences on his sleeve. The last track on “Timber Rock,” for example, is a cover of The Beatles' “Dear Prudence.” This track, he says, epitomizes his way of approaching musical creation: play the songs live and see what works, both for the musicians and the audience. “I think that's part of what the audience enjoys," he says. "Every show is different. You might hear some of the same songs from one show to the next, but they won't be played the same way."Scott Pemberton—undoubtedly in his patented fedora and bushy beard—is on tour now and will be performing at Star Theatre on May 28th.
