We are giving West London some serious spotlight this week as we gear up for the iconic Ealing Blues Festival over at Walpole Park. There is a stacked lineup coming to the park, including a very special homage to festival founder Robert Hokum on The Hokum stage, so we are spotlighting plenty of the stellar artists hitting the boards. On top of that, we have got fresh live dates and news straight out of our home base with the Crawdaddy Club Richmond at The Turks Head in Twickenham, plus all of our regular weekly spin features. The music for this edition is packed with festival heavyweights and local legends. We are setting the pace with Robert Hokum and the Guv'nors, the Geoff Garbo Band, the jump blues energy of Jump 66, and the wildly chaotic slide master Bob Log III. You will also hear contemporary gems from Leoni Jane Kennedy, the phenomenal Kyla Brox, and the incredible Louisiana soul of Robert Finley. We keep the pressure on with a classic collaboration featuring Champion Jack Dupree and Eric Clapton, alongside powerhouses Albert Castiglia, Oli Mac and Hi Rhythm, Robbin Kapsalis, and harmonica virtuoso Giles Robson. The second half carries the torch just as high, featuring Hubris Music, Ross Harding, the heavy rock-blues of Mississippi Shakedown, Monster Mike Welch, and the fiery piano work of Veronica Lewis. Wrapping up two solid hours of world-class blues, we bring you Murali Coryell, The Anthony Paule Soul Orchestra featuring Willy Jordan, Emma Wilson, Brigitte Purdey, The Mustangs, Julian James, Curtis Salgado, and the King of the Electric Blues himself, Albert King. Two hours, festival anticipation, and the absolute best music around.

Blues is the Truth #804 We are straight back to business this week with a massive stack of tunes that needs absolutely no introduction. No requests, no fluff, just two full hours of pure, unadulterated groove from some of the best to ever do it. We are setting the mood early with the legendary Taj Mahal and the hypnotic blues-rock vibe of Medicine Head, before dipping into some classic vocal harmony from The 5 Royales. The temperature rises quickly from there with The Cashbox Kings, Blues Messenger, and the searing guitar work of Tinsley Ellis. For the deep, historic roots, we've got the delta giant Bukka White in the building, alongside a brilliant collaboration from Carl Carlton and Melanie Wiegmann, and the godfather himself, John Mayall. We are keeping that classic energy high with soulful runs from Curtis Salgado, the king Buddy Guy, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and the vintage jazz-blues vocals of Helen Humes. The second half is a masterclass in harmonica-driven heat and modern grit. You will hear Russ Green, The Four Flames, and the swampy fire of Ghalia and Mama's Boys, right alongside KAT Blue and the True Believers. We've also locked in the powerhouse pairing of the Nick Moss Band Featuring Dennis Gruenling, Dave Weld and the Imperial Flames, and the brilliant Dave Thomas. Rounding off an absolute powerhouse of a show, we are clearing the runway for Freddie King, the gritty rock-blues of Mississippi Shakedown, Dixie Peach, and the beautifully expressive guitar of Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters, before finishing up with the mighty Tedeschi Trucks Band. It is a serious lineup from top to bottom.

Season Five is roaring to a close with one last incredible guest. Legendary Bluesman, Curtis Salgado stopped by to talk about his early years in Eugene, Oregon and his start in music, dating back to Kindergarten, playin Air Guitar with his cardboard Strat, that swingin concert featuring Count Basie. Of course, we had to talk about the introduction and meeting with John Belushi, who was in town to shoot ‘Animal House'. History records that this meeting with Belushi developed into a bit with Belushi and his counterpart, Dan Aykroyd who became ‘The Blues Brothers'. Hank Shreve joins me on episode 148.Hank started playing harmonica at age eight, and that has remained his true love despite learning various other instruments. He explains how his drumming background shapes the rhythmic feel of his harmonica playing, and how blues opened the door to everything from Latin influences to funk. Hank reflects on opening for Paul DeLay, working with Curtis Salgado, leading The Hank Shreve Band with his father Bill on bass, and broadening his musical output across albums like Loosen Up, Trouble, and That Way. He also discusses teaching at festivals, exploring jazz standards, winning several music awards, and the importance of always making the audience want to dance.Links:The Hank Shreve Band: https://www.hankshreveband.com/Howard Levy's Rhythms of The Breath tuition books: https://levyland.com/book-rhythms-of-the-breathZack Pomerleau playing rack harmonica with drums and guitar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ke3XUN8agbAHank's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/hank.shreveThe Hank Shreve Band Band Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HankShreveBand/Music Masters Teaching Studio: https://www.musicmastersstudio.com/teacher-roster/hank-shreve-guitar-and-drum-lessons-eugene/Videos:Hank's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/hankshreveMike Moothart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ls6ZxhIU_es&list=RDLs6ZxhIU_esPodcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBSpotify Playlist: Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQPodcast sponsors:This podcast is sponsored by SEYDEL harmonicas - visit the oldest harmonica factory in the world at www.seydel1847.com  or on Facebook or Instagram at SEYDEL HARMONICAS--------------------------------Blue Moon Harmonicas: https://bluemoonharmonicas.comSupport the show

What a show for the day after Thanksgiving! This week we roll out a two-hour celebration of bakery-inspired tunes—an irresistible mix of cakes, pies, donuts, cookies, and every sugary delight ever to find its way into a lyric. We'll be mixing up a blend from a century's worth of music, from early jazz confections and country-fried treats to soulful blues pastries, golden-era pop indulgences, and rock-and-roll slices served hot from the oven. It's all about how bakery imagery has sweetened American music's storytelling. Jazz bands swing like a spoon in batter; country artists offer homestyle wisdom baked into every verse; blues singers lean into the bittersweet with slow-cooked grooves; and rock outfits bring the heat with songs that crust, crackle, and pop. Whether it's a dusty 78 from the 1920s or a modern track with sprinkles of retro charm, the playlist draws straight from the musical pantry of the past hundred years. This week's highlights include performances from Dan Hicks, NRBQ, Curtis Salgado, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Waller and a whole lot more. Tune into community radio for West Sonoma County. KOWS-LP 92.5 FM Occidental, streaming to planet Earth at kowsfm.com/listen.

He's with Paul K Ward at Paul's studio blue. Paul is at the controls and I am beating on my laptop as usual. It occurred to me that I have never introduced Curtis in public, not at the Waterfront Blues Festival….nor anywhere else….and I have introduced hundreds of musicians to tens of thousands of people. One of these days I'd like to stoke up a crowd, already psyched to hear Curtis…and fix that. Meanwhile, ladies and gentlemen, give a big round of ammunition for everybody's favorite favorite Curtis Salgado.

Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

"It's 106 miles to Chicago. . ." You know the rest, especially if you are a fan of the Blues Brothers, the musical comedy invention of John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd and one of the breakout hits of the original Saturday Night Live, earning sold out concert tours, two feature films, platinum albums, and spinoffs and tributes that continue today. A serendipitous meeting of John Belushi with future blues star Curtis Salgado in Eugene during the filming of Animal House gave John the blues bug, as well as the moves. Danny Ackroyd was already a huge blues fan, even buying a blues bar to unwind in after SNL tapings. Put that together and you had some real combustible magic -- and a real boost for blues music and blues musicians at a time it was sorely needed. As Dan Ackroyd put it (in the persona of Elwood Blues) "We're on a mission from God." Mission accomplished! As always find full cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Blues Brothers? The Blues Brothers was a fun (and funny) movie -- and a very quotable one at that. See if you or your friends quoted any of these lines after the movie came out in 1980. https://youtu.be/TrxSM_Gxtqw?si=hJq1l2i9OKtyxFJl The Blues Brothers specialized in excavating superb blues tunes from singers who weren't household words (unless your house had it's own Jake and Elwood). And Jake learned well from his teachers, including Curtis Salgado, that a little ad=libbed naughtiness in the middle of a song always brought a big reaction. Check out this version of Willie Mabon's "I Don't Know" from a 1978 Winterland concert. And man, what a band! https://youtu.be/eBcc7PvXAHg?si=c4K9JH8m8jMUsYHw Blues Brothers 2000 paled in comparison to the original in critical reception and box office, but that isn't really fair given the task (replacing John Belushi). There are some great bits in here and the musical numbers are over the top. https://youtu.be/2eEpcETVV3s?si=dYwZrWy6qTq1kVf1

He had some story to tell. Curtis is an incredible musician who has played with such notables as Santana, Steve Miller and his act was the inspiration behind John Belushi's creation of the Blues Brothers. But, after being put on pain killers after a gallstone attack, Curtis became addicted and through further medical examination, it was discovered that he had stage 4 cirrhosis of the liver and needed a transplant. 35 years in recovery, Curtis has beaten the odds and is living a clean and sober musical life!

Through the lens of some of Portland's most influential music scenes—think Satyricon, X-Ray Cafe, and Jimmy Mak's—Scott Pemberton has channelled a ray of sunlight he calls “timber rock.” That's the name of his latest album, which came out last year, but it's also the name of the subgenre he is pioneering, harvesting funk, grunge, jazz, blues, and hippie jam vibes with the epic sweep of his roaring guitar. The resulting music is both tight and loose; recognizable as part of a lineage yet unorthodox; full of evolutions and improvisational concepts that may come and go. For some bands, the live show is a place for experimentation, the record a place for distillation. For Pemberton, even the album is just a slice of time."I came from very much a jazz background, so I think I naturally approached the songs that way," he says. "Within jazz, there is more of a skeletal song structure, that then every time you play the song, you add the flesh.”Born and raised in Portland, the guitarist spent time in legendary jazz drummer Mel Brown's band and has worked with heavy-hitting blues and soul vocalists Curtis Salgado and Linda Hornbuckle. But Pemberton also wears his classic rock influences on his sleeve. The last track on “Timber Rock,” for example, is a cover of The Beatles' “Dear Prudence.” This track, he says, epitomizes his way of approaching musical creation: play the songs live and see what works, both for the musicians and the audience. “I think that's part of what the audience enjoys," he says. "Every show is different. You might hear some of the same songs from one show to the next, but they won't be played the same way."Scott Pemberton—undoubtedly in his patented fedora and bushy beard—is on tour now and will be performing at Star Theatre on May 28th.
