9 Month Missions Trip by Travis Deans. Jan. 12, 2025. Big Idea: You don't have to get on a plane in order to do missions. In fact God has provided a mission field exactly where you are right now and you are His missionary. All you have to do is look around at those God has put in your everyday life and ask Him how He wants to use you to effect their forever. EDGE Student Ministries
“When are you going to become a real pastor" is something many in youth ministry hear. On the show today, Travis Deans joins me to discuss why student ministry is a calling and not a stepping stone. We discuss how Jesus is using students to advance the gospel in amazing ways. Don't miss this conversation.Travis has been in full-time youth ministry since 1996 as a youth pastor, campus ministry director, and youth network coordinator. Through his role he mentors youth workers, consults for churches, assists youth workers to collaborate through evangelistic outreaches, equips students to share their faith, shares strategy for students to form campus ministries in their schools, and organizes youth ministry conferences. Travis Deans and his wife Judy are from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Both Travis and Judy are graduates of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. Travis has been in full-time youth ministry since 1996 as a youth pastor, campus ministry director, and youth network coordinator - that's 28 years! Through his role he mentors youth workers, consults for churches, assists youth workers to collaborate through evangelistic outreaches, equips students to share their faith, shares strategy for students to form campus ministries in their schools, and organizes youth ministry conferences. Travis has been an integral player in the Pittsburgh youth ministry scene for years, which is how he and Sammie originally connected. In today's conversation, we're going to chat about why creating a safe space for teens to ask questions and ponder theological ideas is so important. Questions are most definitely okay - and knowing how to shepherd them as a youth leader or parent is equally important! I'm truly so excited for this episode to encourage and spur you on in the work that the Lord has called you to. Buckle up and join us! How can we take a Cobra Kai approach to our ministry? I don't necessarily mean how can we strike first and strike hard and show no mercy, but how can we take some of the principles we see in that show and apply them to our ministry with teenagers. Kyle, Matt, and Linda discuss spring break and then transition to the halls of their local schools in a conversation with Travis Deans. Travis started 9 Month Mission Trip as a way to encourage students to see their school as a missions field and provides resources to help them be effective ambassadors for Christ among their peers. How can we encourage teens to share the Gospel with their friends at school? Travis suggests getting them to pray for their peers is a great place to start. Students are encouraged to embrace struggles and challenges as a place and opportunity to grow.

We are fully into summer now. For many churches/parachurches/ministries, the summer is filled with reaching your friends through a fun via trip/camp/experience or simply put evangelism. While these have good intentions and may be effective, there is a different approach that we are focusing on today: the school year calendar. It may seem counterintuitive seeing as we finished the school year only days ago, but what if talked about it now so that we planned for the fall now? ----- 9 Month Mission Trip ----- Join us for our next Network Conversation Get More Info Here See the video from the previous conversation here! ----- Follow us on Instagram @youthminnetworks ------ Did this conversation resonate with you? The poet John Donne once wrote that “no man is an island.” Donne was stating a basic truth about life. . . that is that human beings tend to do things not so well when we are isolated from others. We need community to thrive. That’s certainly what the Scriptures teach from Genesis to Revelation. If we’re in youth ministry, community is vital to our flourishing both personally and in ministry. Youth workers who have run the youth ministry race effectively for a long time are always networked and working with other youth workers. While we’ve encountered countless effective youth ministry networks globally, one that stands out is the long-standing youth network in western Pennsylvania and the Pittsburgh area. What makes an effective youth ministry network? How can we get ourselves networked? And what can we do together than makes us all more effective? We’ll be talking to longtime networker Travis Deans about these questions and more, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.
