Podcast Summary: The Inside Out of the "ISM"Hosts: Mike & GlennGuest: Dr. JohnIn this episode, Dr. John rejoins Mike and Glenn at the coffee shop to continue their deep dive into alcoholism, sharing pivotal moments from his journey and breaking down the true nature of addiction, connection, and relapse.Redefining the "ISM"Dr. John challenges the traditional view of alcoholism, stating that he was "born scared" and that alcohol itself didn't cause his disease. Instead, he describes alcoholism as an "ISM"—a universal, internal yearning to fill an emotional void. The Universal Void: Humans are the only creatures on Earth who torment themselves trying to fill this emptiness. The Admission Tickets: The "ISM" manifests differently for everyone. There are hundreds of 12-step programs identical to AA; they simply have different "admission tickets" (e.g., alcohol, shopping, eating).Religion vs. Spirituality:"Religion fills the void. Spirituality teaches us to embrace the void." While religion relies on a set of rules, spirituality is about building a strong relationship with something greater. Dr. John doesn't label himself as "happy, joyous, and free"—rather, he views his ISM as God continuously poking his void, reminding him it is a never-ending process. The Power of ConnectionThe core message of the episode is that intellect alone cannot cure addiction. True transformation happens through human-to-human interaction.Wounded Healers: Healing occurs when the wounded heal the wounded. As the famous quote goes: “The opposite of addiction is connection.”The Ultimate Need: Dr. John shares a powerful story about his dog, Samantha, who taught him how to give unconditional love. He concludes that giving love is our only true need, summarizing it as: “You can't keep it if you don't give it away.”Heaven on Earth: For Dr. John, heaven is pouring yourself into someone else. “I don't know what heaven is, but the closest I've come to is when I lose myself in another.”The "We" of AA: Glenn and Dr. John agree that Alcoholics Anonymous works strictly because of the "We." We cannot see our own blind spots without others. The Reality of RelapseThe conversation shifts to a cautionary tale from John, who shared his experience with relapse, proving that "every bottom has a trap door."Dr. John emphasizes that triggers are just excuses—relapse is a calculated choice where a person thinks through the action and does it anyway. He breaks down relapse into three distinct stages: Emotional, Mental, and Physical. The 5 Steps to John's Relapse:Complacency: Becoming bored and complacent.Distraction: Losing focus on recovery.Skipping Meetings: Halting attendance.Loss of Mentorship: His sponsor moved away.Isolation: He stopped connecting with his own sponsees as they drifted.Ultimately, it was his gradual movement away from the program that caused the relapse. Despite this, the hosts emphasize a philosophy of grace: hate the sin, love the sinner.Advice for the Newcomer: The "Karate Kid" MetaphorDr. John offers a grounded, realistic perspective for anyone new to recovery. He reminds them that "AA is not a feel-good program; it is a get-well program." Life is still going to be life, and while medical schools don't teach spirituality, it is readily available in AA as the best therapy on the planet. To close, Dr. John shares a "must-listen" metaphor inspired by The Karate Kid. Just like Daniel Larusso learning martial arts from Mr. Miyagi, a newcomer in recovery must possess three essential qualities:OpennessWillingnessHonestyFinal TakeawayGlenn notes that through this program, there is no situation in life he cannot get through sober. Because alcohol remains "cunning, baffling, and powerful," the episode concludes with a call to move forward into today with confidence, balanced by cautiousness.
Welcome to the Video Store Podcast. The balloons are up. The popcorn machine is running full blast. The sno-cone machine is free today. Here at the Video Store Podcast, we're celebrating 100 episodes! For this special anniversary, we wanted to do something worthy of the occasion. No clip-show flashbacks. No “greatest hits” countdown. Instead, we headed behind the counter and pulled out four of the biggest VHS releases of all time, the movies that didn't just dominate the box office, but helped define the home video revolution. These were the rentals everyone wanted. The tapes that were always checked out on Friday night. The films that transformed the VCR from a luxury item into the centerpiece of family entertainment. For our 100th episode, we're revisiting four legendary films that helped build video store culture as we knew it.Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)Directed by Nicholas Meyer, this sequel took the Star Trek franchise in a sharper, more dramatic direction. Admiral James T. Kirk faces his greatest adversary, Khan Noonien Singh, in a tense and deeply personal battle of strategy, revenge, and sacrifice. With Ricardo Montalbán delivering one of science fiction's most unforgettable villain performances, The Wrath of Khan remains one of the greatest sequels ever made. Its real legacy, however, may be what happened after theaters.Paramount made a bold gamble and priced The Wrath of Khan at just $39.95. The result shocked the industry. The tape became the highest-selling VHS release to date. That decision helped reshape home media forever and opened the door for the home video collecting boom of the 1980s.Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones burst onto screens in 1981 with whip-cracking charisma, globe-trotting action, and one of cinema's most instantly recognizable openings. From the giant rolling boulder to the snake-filled Well of Souls, Raiders delivered nonstop thrills while redefining what modern adventure filmmaking could be.When it arrived on VHS in late 1983, priced at the same consumer-friendly $39.95, Raiders generated massive pre-orders and sold more than a million copies within two years. It became one of the first films to demonstrate that a blockbuster could enjoy a hugely profitable second life in home video. It was the kind of movie families brought home again and again, the perfect repeat-viewing experience that made it a cornerstone of early home libraries. The Karate Kid (1984)The Karate Kid was one of those movies families rented over and over again until every line of dialogue was memorized. Released in 1984, the story of Daniel LaRusso, Mr. Miyagi, and the All-Valley Karate Tournament struck a perfect balance of heart, humor, action, and inspiration. On VHS, The Karate Kid became one of the defining family rentals of the decade.Unlike the spectacle-driven blockbusters on this list, its success proved that emotionally resonant, character-driven stories could thrive in the home video market. It became a staple of Friday night rentals, sleepovers, and repeat family viewings.Batman (1989)The summer of 1989 belonged to Batman.Tim Burton's Batman wasn't just a hit movie, it was a full-scale cultural event. Michael Keaton's brooding Dark Knight, Jack Nicholson's unforgettable Joker, Danny Elfman's thunderous score, and Gotham's gothic atmosphere transformed superhero cinema forever. It was darker, moodier, and more cinematic than anything audiences expected from a comic book adaptation. Then came the VHS release.Warner Bros. priced Batman at an aggressive $24.95, making it one of the most accessible blockbuster home video releases of its era. Stores stacked walls of black-and-gold VHS boxes. Cardboard standees filled lobbies. Television commercials hyped its release like another theatrical event. The theatrical release made Batman a cultural obsession. The VHS release made it part of everyday life.Thank You for 100 EpisodesFrom Star Trek II changing VHS pricing forever, to Raiders proving the power of repeat home viewing… from The Karate Kid becoming a family rental institution to Batman turning home video into a national event, these weren't just great movies. They were the tapes that defined Friday nights. They built home video libraries, filled video store shelves, and helped create the culture we celebrate every week here at the Video Store Podcast. To everyone who has listened, shared the show, and stopped by the store these past 100 episodes: thank you!Until next time — be kind, rewind. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Welcome back to the show. Today's guest is someone who has spent decades making an unforgettable mark on both the big screen and daytime television. You know him as the intimidating Mike Barnes — the villain who squared off against Daniel LaRusso in Karate Kid Part III — a role he beat out over 2,000 other hopefuls to land. He then reprised that iconic character in Netflix's smash hit Cobra Kai. But his career didn't stop there. For years, he's been a fan favorite on one of the most-watched daytime dramas in the world, The Bold and the Beautiful, as the complicated, charismatic Deacon Sharpe. On top of all that, he's an Emmy Award-winning producer, a published author, a stand-up comedian, and a martial artist. Sean Kanan is truly one of a kind, and I am so glad to have him here today. In the Kairos moment, you will find yourself in an unknown place. And a person will appear. This person is known among storytellers as “The Old Man in the Woods.”His job is to prepare you for all the challenges you will face on the next segment of your adventure.Mr. Miyagi was the Old Man in the Woods for Daniel LaRusso in the Karate Kid.Obi-Wan was Luke Skywalker's first Old Man in the Woods, and Yoda was his second.Have you noticed how every James Bond movie begins with 007 visiting “Q”?“Q” is the armorer who supplies 007 with precisely the gadgets he will need to accomplish his next mission.“Q” is James Bond's “Old Man in the Woods.”Luke chapter 4 tell us of how Jesus, immediately after his baptism, spent 40 days in the wilderness of Judea. When he emerged from that wilderness, he revealed himself to the world. Verse 14 of that chapter says, “Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.”Would it be fair to say that Jesus spent 40 days with the ultimate “Old Man in the Woods” prior to doing what he famously did?John bar Zebedee sat next to Jesus during The Last Supper. He was the only one of Jesus' followers to witness the crucifixion. And was entrusted by Jesus – from the cross – to care for his mother, Mary, while He was away.John bar Zebedee, in chapter two of First John*, writes about the Three Stages of Life.He speaks of the Child, the Young Man, and the Old Man.I am writing to you, dear Children, because your sins have been forgivenon account of his name, and because you know the Father.I write to you, Young Men,because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you,and you have overcome the evil one.I am writing to you, Fathers, because you know Himwho is from the beginning.Because you know Himwho is from the beginning.Children spend a dozen or more years preparing to become the strong Young Men and strong Young Women who, full of zest and zeal and zip-a-dee-doo-dah, will face challenges, overcome difficulties, and leave their fingerprints on the world. And every one of them will need an advisor – an older and wiser friend – to counsel them, encourage them, and prepare them for what lies ahead.John bar Zebedee was not speaking of biological Fathers and Mothers when he wrote the letter that we call the book of First John. The people John calls “Fathers” are those who have already wandered the pathless forest and found their way to the other side. The people John calls “Fathers” are those who already “know.”The American Dream promises that when you have finished your journey and completed your task, you can recreate, luxuriate, and selfishly celebrate your success for the rest of your life. And that certainly remains an option, if it appeals to you. But I believe that it will not.I believe that you will choose to advise, encourage, and counsel the next generation who must blaze a new and different trail through a new and different wilderness than the one that you and I faced.I believe that you will find fulfillment in your occasional role as “The Old Man” or “The Old Woman” in the woods.Roy H. Williams*I consolidated and reorganized what you will find in chapter two of First John, but if you read it closely, I believe you will agree that my retelling is faithful to the message of that original text.

Chris Ball is a real one — born in South Central LA, athlete, hustler, legacy operator, and now the founder and CEO of Ball Family Farms, one of the most respected cannabis brands in California. Before the licenses and the spotlight, Chris was deep in the traditional market. A federal sting — Operation Sudden Fall — caught him up, and he sat down for a few months while fighting his case. Instead of folding, Chris leveled up: he got a steady job, stayed on good behavior, and when the case finally went to trial, the judge gave him time served because of the way he carried himself throughout the process. From there, he came home with a mission. Chris became one of the first Social Equity cultivators in Los Angeles and built Ball Family Farms from scratch — a brand built on discipline, clean product, authenticity, and family-rooted values. Today, their strains like Nino Brown, Daniel LaRusso, and Clubber Lang are staples in shops across the state. This episode is street, inspiring, and real — a blueprint for turning pressure into purpose and legacy hustle into licensed success.⸻

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of May 30, 2025. A new chapter in the Karate Kid movie saga is the big movie of the week! "Karate Kid: Legends" sees Ralph Macchio return to the big screen as Daniel LaRusso, but in more of a sequel to the 2010s’ Jackie Chan "Karate Kid" movie. Still, at only 90 minutes long, it's worth checking out. Streaming on HBO Max, you can check out the filmed-in-Utah movie "Mountainhead," which offers a VERY dark yet comedic look at a fictional group of uber-wealthy tech bros during worldwide economic turmoil. Then, over on Netflix, the new series set in the U.K. called "Dept Q" is a pretty good murder mystery series that's worth checking out for fans of the genre. The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisode taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics. Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen. On tonight's episode of Long Road to Ruin, Mark Radulich, Pat Mullin and Sean Comer crane kick their way through The Karate Kid Trilogy. We chart the evolution of Daniel LaRusso's journey from underdog in the original 1984 classic to his increasingly strained arcs in Parts II and III. The first film captured lightning in a bottle with a perfect mix of heart, mentorship, and underdog triumph. Part II expanded the scope with an Okinawa-set story that deepened Mr. Miyagi's character but lost some of the first film's spark. By Part III, the charm was wearing thin, the stakes felt forced, and Daniel-san's journey hit a wall of diminishing returns. Join us as we wax on and off about what made this trilogy iconic—and where it started to fall apart.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
Just a few months after Cobra Kai ended, the Karate Kid “universe” is back with a new movie. Karate Kid: Legends hit theaters today and I had a chance to see the film! While I love the original Karate Kid, I don't think there has been a single good Karate Kid sequel and I have the unpopular opinion that The Next Karate Kid is probably the most enjoyable movie in this franchise outside of that original, but maybe on a ‘so bad it's good' level than being legitimately great. But of course, I love Cobra Kai. My reviews of some of the season of Cobra Kai are some of my most popular episodes I've ever published, but I did get quite a lot of flack for my disappointments with the final season. I always found it so odd how quickly after Cobra Kai we were already seeing Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso again, epically because of how perfect that final scene between him and Johnny was. Also, this franchise has just beaten the Karate Kid formula to death by this point. Does Karate Kid: Legends stand as the best film in the franchise since the original, and is it a worthy follow up to Cobra Kai? Find out in this review!Karate Kid: Legends:Directed by: Jonathan EntwistleWritten by: Rob LieberBased on characters created by: Robert Mark KamenProduced by: Karen RosenfeltExecutive Producers: Jenny Hinkey, Ralph MacchioMusic by: Dominic LewisEdited by: Dana E. But when a friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition and merges two skills into one with the help of Mr. Han and Daniel LaRusso — played by Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, who reprise their roles from their respective 2010 and 1984 ‘Karate Kid' films. Reggie “The Reel Critic” Ponder says the film “is about family, fun and fu — kung fu.” "The Reel Critic" is hosted and produced by Reggie Ponder. We present our Cobra Kai (Season 6) review! The sixth and final season of Cobra Kai, also known as Cobra Kai VI, consists of 15 episodes and was released on Netflix. Unlike previous seasons, the sixth season was released in three parts of five episodes each. The first was released on July 18, 2024, the second on November 15, 2024, and the final part on February 13, 2025. The series is a direct sequel to the original four films in The Karate Kid franchise, focusing on the characters of Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence over 30 years after the titular film. The season was originally set to be released in 2023, but experienced delays as a result of the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes. The second part, however, got an early release date after originally receiving a November 28, 2024 release window. The season features 13 starring roles, all of which returned from previous seasons, including Gianni DeCenzo who was a series regular in seasons 2–4, but was demoted to a recurring cast member in the previous season.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
Cobra Kai is an American martial arts comedy drama television series created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, and distributed by Sony Pictures Television. It serves as a sequel to the original The Karate Kid films created by Robert Mark Kamen.[1] The series premiered on May 2, 2018, and concluded on February 13, 2025, after six seasons consisting of 65 episodes. The series stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, reprising their respective roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence from the film series, alongside Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, Jacob Bertrand, Gianni DeCenzo, Peyton List, Vanessa Rubio, and Dallas Dupree Young. Martin Kove and Thomas Ian Griffith also reprise their roles from the films as part of the main cast, with many others returning in guest or recurring roles.Cobra Kai re-examines The Karate Kid films as Johnny's "redemption story,"[2] beginning with his decision to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo, and the rekindling of his old rivalry with Daniel.[3] The series attained high viewership on both YouTube and Netflix, and received critical acclaim for its writing, performances, action sequences, humor, character development, and faithfulness to the films. It received numerous awards and nominations, with the third season being nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards.Thirty-four years after being defeated by Daniel LaRusso in the 1984 All-Valley Karate Tournament at the end of The Karate Kid (1984), Johnny Lawrence suffers from alcoholism and depression. He works as a part-time handyman and lives in an apartment in Reseda, Los Angeles, having fallen far from his wealthy lifestyle in Encino. He has an estranged son named Robby, from a previous relationship, whom he has abandoned. In contrast, Daniel is now the owner of a successful car dealership and is married to co-owner Amanda with whom he has two children: Sam and Anthony. However, Daniel often struggles to meaningfully connect with his children especially after his friend and mentor Mr. Miyagi passed away prior to the series' beginning. After using karate to defend his teenage neighbor Miguel Diaz from a group of bullies, Johnny agrees to teach Miguel the way of the fist and re-opens Cobra Kai. The revived dojo attracts a group of bullied social outcasts who find camaraderie and self-confidence under Johnny's tutelage. The reopening of Cobra Kai reignites Johnny's rivalry with Daniel, who responds by opening the Miyagi-do dojo, whose students include Sam and Robby, leading to a rivalry between the respective dojos.Pre

Wax On Wax Off #RTTBROS #Nightlight The Wax On, Wax Off of Scripture "But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil." - Hebrews 5:14 Much like young Daniel LaRusso in The Karate Kid, we often find ourselves questioning the seemingly mundane tasks before us. Daniel spent days waxing cars, painting fences, and sanding floors - activities that appeared disconnected from his desire to learn karate. His frustration grew with each repetitive motion, unaware that Mr. Miyagi was ingeniously building muscle memory for fundamental karate moves. The Old Testament can feel similarly perplexing. As we read through lengthy genealogies, detailed ceremonial laws, and ancient battles, we might wonder, "What does this have to do with my Christian walk?" Yet, just as Daniel's apparently meaningless chores were actually martial arts training in disguise, these Old Testament passages lay crucial groundwork for understanding God's grand narrative. Consider the tabernacle instructions in Exodus, painstakingly detailed down to the last cubit and thread. At first glance, they might seem irrelevant to modern Christianity. However, when we reach Hebrews, these details suddenly illuminate profound truths about Christ's role as our High Priest and the significance of His sacrifice. "For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect." - Hebrews 10:1 The Old Testament serves as our "wax on, wax off" training. Each story of redemption, each prophecy, and each law builds our spiritual muscles for recognizing God's character and His plan of salvation. When we finally reach the New Testament, these foundational movements snap into focus, revealing their true purpose in Christ. Just as Mr. Miyagi knew the value of building proper fundamentals before teaching advanced techniques, God in His wisdom gave us the Old Testament as essential preparation for understanding the fullness of Christ's ministry. The patient study of these ancient texts develops our spiritual discernment, allowing us to better grasp the deeper truths of the New Testament. "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me." - John 5:39 Let us approach the Old Testament with renewed patience and trust, knowing that like Daniel's seemingly pointless tasks, these scriptures are carefully designed to prepare us for deeper understanding. Each reading strengthens our spiritual muscles, readying us for the moment when, like Daniel's revelation about Mr. Miyagi's methods, we see how it all connects to Christ. Be sure to Like, Share, Follow and subscribe it helps get the word out. https://linktr.ee/rttbros

This week, Tommy is joined by the brilliantly talented actress Mary Mouser who is best known for her starring role in the smash-hit series Cobra Kai. Part 1 of the sixth and final season is out now! Cobra Kai is a martial arts comedy/drama sequel to the original Karate Kid film trilogy that delivers plenty of action. Mary plays Samantha LaRusso, daughter to karate champion Daniel LaRusso, reprised by the iconic Ralph Macchio. The series has surpassed over 1.7 billion minutes of streaming from their first 50 episodes, and it is constantly #1 on the Netflix charts. Today Mary opens up about what its been like processing the end of a series that means so much to her, why Cobra Kai has been her dream job, what the journey from day one of filming to her final day of filming has been like, what she hopes her character's legacy will be, the ways she has grown through playing Samantha LaRusso, what's to come for her character later in Season 6, if she is satisfied with how the entire series wraps up, what a spin-off in the Miyagi universe might look like, why being around the OG cast never lost its magic, her favorite scenes with Miguel throughout the series, and a surprising new passion of hers. “We were all six or seven years old when [the first Karate Kid movie] came out. So all of us saw it in the theater and I think for all of us, it was probably the first time any of us had seen a movie where there was such an amazing twist that happened. The whole time, we're thinking that Daniel LaRusso's not learning [karate], that he's doing all these chores for this guy and then suddenly it's, ‘Wait! He's been learning karate the whole time!' So anyone who watched the movie was blown away by that moment, but when you're six or seven it's a formative memory. So it was a movie that was meaningful to all of us,” says Jon Hurwitz, showrunner and executive producer of the Netflix show Cobra Kai. In this episode, I speak to all three showrunners of Cobra Kai, Jon Hurwitz, Josh Heald and Hayden Schlossberg about what the show means to them now that we're in the sixth and final season. We discuss why they thought it was imperative to tell the story from the character Johnny Lawrence's (William Zabka), point of view and they hint at the possibility of a new spinoff show – perhaps about a young Mr. Miyagi – coming soon. They also shared their advice for writing a spec script. “It's really tough to stand out. And that's what you have to figure out. In our early scripts, it was that first page – it was being R-rated and provocative and saying something that gets you noticed and stands out in the marketplace. Because if you're just writing a genre story, it's just like why?” says Josh Heald. To hear more about the sixth season of the show and their great advice for writing spec scripts, listen to the podcast.
