One of the most controversial episodes for 2015 was the Tracey Morgan crash, which received national publicity and opened up a can of worms for many carriers and drivers, revealing clever attempts at manipulating trucking HOS.  One of the biggest victories for drivers was Kenny Capell’s victory for the Obstruction of Justice “Right to Sleep” court case, led by SBTC chairman James Lamb. The National Truck Parking Coalition was formed and has continued the task of addressing the 30 year old problem of truck parking shortages.  FMCSA was busy also this 2015 as The ELD rule has become final, as was the  Driver Coercion Rule. Let’s not forget “the Right to Carry”, ’Mike Law’ for CDL drivers, which would grant a national gun permit. As we move forward into 2016, there remain vital issues for drivers.  Wages, HOS, Truck Parking, and ELD’s still remain high on the list of concerns. As the "Voice of the American Trucker" for 50-plus-years, Overdrive Magazine will be joining forces with sister publication Truckers News and quarterly Overdrive spinoff, Custom Rigs, beginning August, 2012. Senior Editor, Todd Dills, asked readers what they believed to be the top trucking challenges faced by owner operators. Heading at the top of the "challenges list" included: fuel prices, EOBR's, Hours of Service, uncompensated detention time and freight rates. Todd Dills joins us to discuss his report, along with truck drivers': small-fleet owner, Tom Blake, and Jeff Clark of Trucking Solutions Group who were two of the primary sources for his report in the August issue of Overdrive Magazine. Mr. Dills is also host of the Channel 19 Blog where he will be sharing more reports on these issues in the August edition of Overdrive Magazine.  

As trucking regulations become more focused on medical  issues such as sleep apnea and the body mass index (BMI),  truck drivers are now needing to pay better attention to their heath.  Regardless of the lifestyle that truckers face, better health can be accomplished but both professional driver and motor carrier must play a responsible role.  Special guest, Jeff Clark has been in trucking for 30 years and is a member of the Driver Health Council with the Trucking Solutions Group. Having faced his own health problems while driving over the road, he is now an avid runner, completing eight marathons and believes that the truck driver health issues in the industry can be solved with drivers and motor carriers working together. He has been featured in Road King, Truckers News, Challenge, Landline, and Runner’s World magazines and currently writes a monthly health column for Truckers News Magazine.  We will take a look at the importance of truck driver health and what you can do to protect your CDL over impending truck driver health regulations.

Truck driver, Ed Webb learned first-hand how states are increasing their attention to the testing of sleep apnea. After being woke up by an Indiana state trooper when he heard snoring coming from the truck, he found himself being audited by the State of Indiana. With his story featured in the June, 2011 issue of Trucker News Magazine, Ed joins us as our special guest. It is no secret that truck drivers around the country are working actively to achieve better health through all manner of activities. From the regulatory side of the truck driver health issue, attention to specific conditions continues to increase at the state level just as new federal programs to scrutinize the doctors giving DOT physicals, as well as doing away with the driver medical card as we know it, draws closer to implementation.
