In The Past: Garage Rock Podcast

This week the spotlight is on a 1965 folk jangler by The Guilloteens: "I Don't Believe" is a raw, blue-eyed soul vocal outing reminiscent of the Righteous Brothers. They shoulda been on The Flintstones!! In 1966, The Five of Us came out with the first cover version. It's less raw, but it's smooth as Kraft Creamy! The same year, The Moonrakers pepped the song up considerably and made it into a toe-tapper. The song returned to Memphis in 2002 when Reigning Sound payed homage to their 60s forebears. It's a pretty muscular version, but the vocals are soft & sensitive. You'll feel no pain!!

What the Riff?!?
1974 - July: Beach Boys “Endless Summer”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 17, 2025 30:43

By the mid-70's the Beach Boys appeared to be a band that had been left behind.  Sales had been only moderate for their previous albums, and the band was struggling to determine their direction musically.  In the summer of 1973 the movie "American Graffiti" featured several Beach Boys songs, creating nostalgia for the earlier surfing music.Between the revived interest sparked by "American Graffiti" and the success of the Beatles "Red" and "Blue" compilation albums, the Beach Boys released a collection of hits from their early 60's catalogue called Endless Summer.  This featured songs from their Capitol Records days, 1962-1965.  It was a near-instant success reaching the top of the charts in the United States four months after its release, and becoming their second number 1 album on the US charts.  After the success of Endless Summer, the Beach Boys would reposition themselves as an oldies act, continuing in this vein for many years.  Brian Wilson would pen one further Beach Boys studio album in 1977 which would meet with meager sales.  Afterwards the band would focus on their classics until seeing a resurgence in the late 80's generated from another popular film, Tom Cruise's "Cocktail" Wayne brings us this surfin' themed compilation for this week's podcast. Catch A WaveA true surfing song, this tune is about being on a surfboard, waiting for the right wave to come along.  This song was originally released on the 1963 album "Surfer Girl," and a rewritten version was recorded by Jan and Dean as "Sidewalk Surfin."Little Deuce CoupeThis track is about a 1932-vintage Ford model 18 hot rod used in drag racing on the streets of California.  "American Graffiti" had featured the deuce coupe prominently, along with the Beach Boys song.  The lyrics were written by local radio DJ Roger Christian.Shut DownAnother song about drag racing, "shut down" means you are about to beat the person in the race.  The phrase "tach it up" may have lost some meaning in the era of automatic transmission, but the tachometer would run high for a drag race.  The song is told from the perspective of the driver of a 1963 Corvette Sting Ray in a race against a 1962 Dodge Dart.Fun, Fun, FunThe inspiration for this song was a story the Beach Boys heard during a radio interview.  The station owner described his daughter "borrowing" his 1963 Thunderbird to go to a drive-in hamburger shop.  The opening riffs were inspired by Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode."   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Uptown Saturday Night by Dobie Gray (from the motion picture “Uptown Saturday Night”)Sidney Poitier starred in and directed this action comedy which co-starred Bill Cosby, Harry Belafonte, Richard Pryor, and Flip Wilson. STAFF PICKS:The Joker by the Steve Miller BandLynch leads off the staff picks with a well known song from Steve Miller.  The names in the first line reference several of Miller's previous songs, as well as the made-up word "pompatus."  It barely cracked the top 40 in the US, hitting 40 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Miller borrowed some lyrics from the song "Lovey Dovey" when he talks about wanting to "shake your tree."The Air that I Breathe by the HolliesRob brings us a slow burning but iconic ballad that the Hollies covered.  The original was from Albert Hammond, and previously covered by Phil Everly.  The Hollies version was the most successful, going to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Alan Parsons was the engineer on this song.Hollywood Swinging by Kool & the GangBruce's staff pick is the first number 1 R&B Single from Kool & the Gang.  It was a crossover hit as well, going to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Rick Westfield is the keyboardist for it and sings lead.  The song is a true story of the keyboardist wanting to become "a bad piano-playing man" with the group. Rock and Roll Heaven by The Righteous BrothersWayne's features an ode to the rock stars who had died at an early age. This song is another example of a song that was covered, and did better than the original.  Climax performed this song in 1973 but did not chart, while the Righteous Brothers took it to the top 10 in the United States.  Lyric would be added in the years to come as more rock stars passed. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Chameleon by Herbie HancockThis jazz funk instrumental track closes out the podcast for the week.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. General Witchfinders
53 - The Gorgon

General Witchfinders

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 25, 2025 95:36

It's 17th February 1964 – You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' by The Righteous Brothers is at number one in the UK. Sir Alec Douglas-Home is Prime Minister, Beatlemania has erupted in the United States, Southampton has been granted city status (can you tell this script was running short?), and the Channel Tunnel Agreement was signed, with an estimated completion time of five years (though it would actually take 30). Meanwhile, at the cinema, released as a double feature with The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, is today's topic – The Gorgon.    Anthony Nelson Keys, one of four filmmaking sons of comedian Nelson "Bunch" Keys, is well-known in this parish for a number of topics we've discussed before, including Quatermass and the Pit (Ep 34) and The Reptile (Ep 19). He joined Hammer in 1956 as an associate producer, later becoming a producer and occasional screenwriter. Keys also served as General Manager of Bray Studios in the 1960s and eventually co-founded Charlemagne Productions with Christopher Lee—or should that be production (singular)? As we know, they managed only one film together: Nothing but the Night (covered in Episode 42).     Richard Pasco plays Paul Heitz. Late in his career, he starred as Tom Colley in The Watcher in the Woods, a favorite film from Ross's youth that we must cover one day. Before that, he played Cardinal Richelieu in the 1966 TV adaptation of The Three Musketeers and Dr. Boris Zargo in Rasputin: The Mad Monk.    #BigChrisLee appears as Professor Karl Meister, while his best buddy Peter Cushing plays Dr. Namaroff. Despite popular belief that they always worked together, the pair hadn't shared the screen in four years before this production began.    Barbara Shelley stars as Carla Hoffman. Born Barbara Teresa Kowin in 1932, Shelley appeared in over 100 films and TV series. She's celebrated for her roles in horror classics like Village of the Damned, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Rasputin: The Mad Monk, and Quatermass and the Pit.    For the role of the monster, former ballerina Prudence Hyman was cast, as the creature was intended to float gracefully, almost like a wraith. (Spoiler alert!) Shelley had hoped to play her character's Gorgon form herself for continuity and even suggested using a special wig with live green garden snakes for realism. Unfortunately, the idea was rejected due to budget and time constraints. After seeing the disappointing Gorgon effects in the final cut, Keys admitted to Shelley that her suggestion might have been the better choice. As #BigChrisLee quipped, “The only thing wrong with The Gorgon is the Gorgon!”    Visually, this film is stunning, so let's give a shoutout to Michael Reed's cinematography and Bernard Robinson's production design. Michael Reed's CV includes Dracula: Prince of Darkness, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and five episodes of CITVs Press Gang. Meanwhile, Bernard Robinson designed some of Hammer's greatest productions, spanning from the very first to the last of their classic horror films.     Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. Rich Elwood was a Vancouver radio personality, actor, stand-up comedian and comedy club owner. His comedy career started doing Bill Cosby routines in front of his Grade 7 class and he polished his act in Toronto's notorious Yonge Street strip clubs. "They were a good training ground," he told the Vancouver Sun's Lee Bacchus, "You would have about 200 guys out there all yelling 'Bring out the broads!' You had to be good or you'd be doing the last 10 minutes to heckles and boos." Rich says, "Doing standup was always a blast. However, bands typically didn't care for standup warmups. In one case, the last thing they said to me before going on was 'Keep it short and don't touch our equipment.' I was only going to do five minutes and would not need to touch their gear, but it became a twenty minute set that ended in me giving myself a cymbal crash. 'Don't say don't to a comedian', I said to them coming off. I opened for many acts over the years including Tom Jones (a class guy and very gracious), The Righteous Brothers (quiet but nice), Howie Mandel (a super person and very funny), Dennis Miller (very bright), The Temptations (very cool people) and Ray Charles, who was so nice to me and I was very much in awe of him. Man, did he have stories!" Punchline's was the first real comedy club in Vancouver. Robin Williams, Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Carrey, Norm Macdonald, Howie Mandel and other greats all headlined. Rich also opened the door to up-and-coming comics Ryan Stiles, Rick Ducommun, Patrick McKenna and many more. His Vancouver radio career in Vancouver included CFUN (as DJ Rich Kelly) and CKNW as a talk show host. He was MC for Red's 50th Anniversary In Radio celebration in 2004, and he would also step in for Red on CISL's morning show. Among Rich's acting roles over the years was a part in Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore in the mid-1990s. After getting out of the club business, he was an in-demand corporate comic and producer. Rich wrote comedy for the hit political series Double Exposure, and he developed several TV projects with writing partner Patrick McKenna. Rich Elwood died on December 2, 2021 at the age of 67. Old friend John Oliver says, "One of the funniest people I have ever known and a true friend. A risk-taker, an entrepreneur who never quit in his efforts to bring quality comedy to Vancouver." Tom Jeffries replaced Rich at CFUN: "He was most gracious and we had so much fun when he ran Punchline's. A very talented and hilarious man ― I miss him. I was blessed to call him a friend." Recorded in Vancouver in 2013.

Before the world heard that song, Dylan was far from mainstream and relevant in mostly small metropolitan and university music circles. "Like a Rolling Stone" changed all that. Along with the Byrds and the Lovin' Spoonful, he ushered in the era we now know as folk-rock. Scott is available to discuss the significance of the song's impact and uniqueness. Along with the Byrds and the Lovin' Spoonful, Bob Dylan helped usher in the genre we now know as folk-rock, which Scott describes as the first successful and significant U.S. response to the British Invasion led by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Scott can address the unlikeliness of the song's popularity. Dylan's vocals were raw and unorthodox in comparison to most hit singers in the history of pop music and the single clocked in at an astounding 6:07, shattering the previous record held by the Righteous Brothers' “You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling,” which clocked in at 3:45. The most rented video of 1991 came out the year previous in cinemas and is this week's pick for Dave. "Ghost" (1990) was a collaborative effort that blended romance, supernatural elements, and drama to create a timeless film. Directed by Jerry Zucker, known primarily for his work in comedy, the film marked a significant shift in his career. The screenplay, written by Bruce Joel Rubin, provided a compelling narrative that combined love and mystery, which attracted a strong cast including Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg. Swayze played Sam Wheat, a banker who is murdered and becomes a ghost, while Moore portrayed his grieving girlfriend, Molly Jensen. Goldberg's role as Oda Mae Brown, a psychic who helps Sam communicate with Molly, brought both comedic relief and emotional depth to the film. Her performance was particularly notable, earning her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Filming took place in various locations around New York City, capturing the vibrant and sometimes eerie backdrop that added to the film's atmospheric tension. The production faced challenges, particularly in creating believable special effects for the ghostly sequences. The use of then-state-of-the-art visual effects, combined with practical effects and creative cinematography by Adam Greenberg, helped bring the supernatural elements to life. The iconic scene featuring the Righteous Brothers' song "Unchained Melody" during a pottery-making session between Swayze and Moore became one of the most memorable moments in cinematic history. "Ghost" was released to critical and commercial success, grossing over $500 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing film of 1990. Its unique blend of genres and strong performances have ensured its lasting legacy. Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

Welcome back to Born to Watch, where we dive deep into the movies that have shaped our lives and the world of cinema. This week, we continue our Demi Moore Double Shot with a look at the 1990 supernatural romantic thriller, "Ghost." Directed by Jerry Zucker, "Ghost" has left an indelible mark on pop culture and remains a beloved classic. So, let's delve into the elements that make this film so unforgettable.Cinematography and Visuals"Ghost" is a visually stunning film that masterfully blends the ethereal with the everyday. The cinematography by Adam Greenberg captures the stark contrast between the vibrant life of New York City and the eerie, spectral world that Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) finds himself in after his untimely death. The film's lighting is particularly noteworthy; the scenes involving the ghosts are often bathed in a soft, otherworldly glow that enhances the supernatural elements without overwhelming the viewer. One of the most iconic visual sequences is the pottery wheel scene. The intimate, tactile nature of pottery-making, coupled with Sam's ghostly presence, creates a hauntingly beautiful moment that has been parodied and referenced countless times in popular culture. The use of practical effects, especially the translucent, glowing appearances of the ghosts, still holds up remarkably well and adds to the film's charm.Storytelling and Themes"Ghost" is a love story at its core, but it transcends the boundaries of life and death. The screenplay by Bruce Joel Rubin perfectly blends romance, suspense, and supernatural elements. The narrative follows Sam Wheat, a banker who is murdered and becomes a ghost, unable to move on because of his deep love for his girlfriend, Molly Jensen (Demi Moore), and his need to protect her from danger. The film expertly weaves together themes of love, loss, and justice. Sam's journey from shock and confusion to acceptance and action is compelling, and his undying love for Molly is the emotional anchor of the story. The subplot involving Carl Bruner (Tony Goldwyn), Sam's treacherous friend, adds a layer of suspense and betrayal that keeps the audience on edge. One of the film's most profound themes is the idea of unfinished business and the quest for closure. Sam's interactions with other spirits, particularly the subway ghost (Vincent Schiavelli), highlight how people handle their unresolved issues. The film's resolution, with Sam finding peace and saying a final goodbye to Molly, is both heart-wrenching and uplifting.Character Development and PerformancesThe performances in "Ghost" are nothing short of stellar. Patrick Swayze delivers one of his best performances as Sam Wheat, capturing the character's desperation, determination, and undying love. Swayze's chemistry with Demi Moore is palpable, making their on-screen relationship believable and deeply moving.Demi Moore shines as Molly Jensen, bringing a perfect blend of vulnerability and strength to the role. Her portrayal of grief is raw and realistic, and her gradual acceptance of Sam's presence is beautifully handled. Moore's performance ensures that Molly is not just a damsel in distress but a fully realised character who finds her strength through her love for Sam.However, Whoopi Goldberg's performance as Oda Mae Brown steals the show. As a fraudulent psychic who suddenly finds herself genuinely communicating with the dead, Goldberg brings much-needed comic relief and heart to the film. Her scenes with Swayze are some of the film's highlights, and her transformation from a con artist to a true medium is humorous and touching. Goldberg's performance earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, a testament to her outstanding work in the film.Historical and Cultural SignificanceUpon its release, "Ghost" was a box office phenomenon, grossing over $505 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing film of 1990. Its success was a testament not only to its compelling story and strong performances but also to its universal themes of love and loss, which resonated with audiences around the world. The film's impact on popular culture is undeniable. The pottery scene set to The Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody" has become one of the most iconic moments in cinematic history. The film also brought the supernatural romance genre into the mainstream, paving the way for future films that explore similar themes."Ghost" also significantly influenced the portrayal of psychics and the afterlife in media. Whoopi Goldberg's Oda Mae Brown became a cultural icon, and the film's depiction of the afterlife as a place where spirits linger until they find peace has been echoed in subsequent films and TV shows.Relevance to Pop CultureEven decades after its release, "Ghost" holds a special place in pop culture. The film is often referenced and parodied, from sitcoms like "Friends" to movies like "Scary Movie 2." Its themes of undying love and the afterlife remain relevant, and its influence can be seen in a wide range of romantic and supernatural films that followed. The film's legacy is also evident in its adaptations. "Ghost: The Musical," premiered in 2011, brought the story to the stage with new songs and a fresh take on the beloved classic. The musical has enjoyed success in both the West End and Broadway, further cementing "Ghost's" enduring appeal."Ghost" is a timeless classic that masterfully combines romance, suspense, and supernatural elements into a compelling and emotionally resonant story. The film's strong performances, particularly by Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg, its stunning visuals, and its universal themes of love and loss have ensured its place in the pantheon of great films. As we continue our Demi Moore Double Shot on Born to Watch, "Ghost" is a perfect example of why Moore remains an enduring and beloved figure in Hollywood. Her performance and the film's lasting impact make "Ghost" a must-watch for any cinema fan. So, grab some tissues, sit back, and let yourself be swept away by this hauntingly beautiful tale of love that transcends time. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com.au/

Oh, what crazy fun! Melanie Taylor who's sung with pretty much everybody who's anybody is such an absolute blast, joy, whip-smart, street-smart, soulful, intuitive, talented, informative, unabashedly opinionated and dare I say… right… at least, right on! We started with traveling the world, and how Mel's work, touring, has enabled her to do so, more to the point, how to pack, and what… I was schooled! A girly girl influenced by her stylin' grandmother, Melanie's got it all going on, even when she only takes one medium suitcase and a backpack for a month! A theatre major dancer, a twist of fate/favor changed the course of Melanie's life. She insisted she doesn't plan. Singing was not on the program. As they say, life's what happens when we're busy making other plans. And what a life she's living. From Disney to the Righteous Brothers, a Bette Harlette, backing up her fan crush, John Mayer, gushing onstage with Elton, caroling with Barbra, backing Chaka, Donna Summers, a surprise which led to being the first female to record and tour with Aerosmith, to her ongoing gig with Barry Manilow… and those are just the few we covered - and Mel's got great stories about all of them! Wise words on so many topics… “Music helps you to remember and helps you to forget.” I love that! The 30 Feet From Stardom backup singer will be front and center headlining her gig on Thursday, July 18th, at the Catalina Bar & Grill in Los Angeles. We'll meet you there! https://www.ticketweb.com/event/melanie-taylor-the-diva-diaries-catalina-bar-grill-tickets/13614933 I LOVE this woman! Generous, present, supportive, kind, and fun, always fun! The very first Righteous Brothers release was "Little Latin Lupe Lu" in '62. It has a slight rockabilly/surf feel, with the great vocals we came to expect, plus the immortal love song line, "She's My Mash Potato Baby"! In 1964, our frat friends The Kingsmen trashed the song, a la "Louie Louie." It's clubfooted, stiffarmed, not soulful, and great. We follow that up with two versions by TWO Dimensions! The first one from Chicago, with some tetanus tambo, and the second a NC band who waxed the track in 65, and it's a hot-footin' verzh fer sher. We also feature a hearsecore rendition from 66 by The Morticians and Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels hit version, that you heard all about in "High Fidelity" - shake it shake it!!
