Joining me today is Joshua Miller, a former patient of Jodi Hildebrandt and faithful Latter-day Saint, sharing his story of recovery from Jodi's "therapy" through the gospel of Jesus Christ. As you know, Hulu recently released "Devil in the Family: The Story of Ruby Franke," a documentary chronicling LDS vlogger Ruby Franke's interactions with the former mental health counselor, Jodi Hildebrandt, another Latter-day Saint, and how they both wound up in prison for child abuse. Critics claim that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is responsible for "creating" people like Ruby and Jodi through it's doctrine. By dissecting his personal experiences with Jodi and responding to a few clips, Joshua and I will explore exactly what role (if any) the Church's doctrine played in his abuse, as well as the role it played in his recovery and redemption. Do we have free will, and to what extent? The Concordians made a distinction between freedom in worldly things and freedom in spiritual things. A person can display worldly righteousness, or even civil righteousness to a certain extent, but we are fully unable to be righteous before God by anything we do (Galatians 3:2-6). Thanks be to Him that our hope is never on ourselves, but on the full sufficiency of salvation by Christ's cross and empty tomb. Rev. Dr. Joshua Miller, pastor at Jehovah Lutheran Church in St. Paul, MN, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study free will. Today on Too Opinionated, we visit with the director of Clawfoot, Michael Day! Michael Day is a writer, director, and producer born in Pittsburgh, PA. While in college, Michael got his start by directing a music video for a then, up-and-coming rapper, WIZ KHALIFA. After college, he immediately immersed himself in the film industry, working on such films as THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, DJANGO UNCHAINED, and TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION, among others.  In the feature world, Michael wrote and produced an action trilogy, titled ROGUE WARFARE. The second film in the series ranked #1 it's first week on Netflix. More recently, Michael started producing for Yale Entertainment, including such films as AS THEY MADE US,  RARE OBJECTS, and THE KILL ROOM.  Producing those films opened the door for Michael to produce and direct his first feature film for Yale, a dark comedy/thriller, CLAWFOOT, starring Francesca Eastwood, Milo Gibson, and Olivia Culpo. CLAWFOOT will be available on major VOD platforms. Michael second feature film, FOG OF WAR, starring John Cusack, Brianna Hildebrand and Jake Abel, will be released in the winter of 2024.  Since then, Michael has produced several films that are currently post production: PRETTY THING, a sexual thriller starring Alicia Silverstone and Karl Glusman, directed by Justin Kelly; STRANGLEHOLD, an action comedy featuring Ashley Benson, Jake Lacy, Justin Long, and Ron Pearlman, directed by Clark Duke; and MIDNIGHT, starring Rosario Dawson, Milla Jovovich, and Alexandra Shipp, directed by Joshua Miller.     Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

What an excellent day for filming an exorcism. THE Exorcism, in fact! And that's the closest thing to a joke you're getting, because the duo behind The Final Girls is back with another deeply personal-- and far much colder-- look at a young woman connecting with a parent in showbiz. Joshua Miller and M.A. Fortin team up with Russell Crowe and a seemingly endless list of character actors to tell the story of a newly-sober man trying to get himself on the right track by taking what could be the role of his career, the priest in a remake of a famous exorcism movie, no matter what demons from his past it may awaken. Unable to win respect at home or on set, dodging a well-intentioned holy man, a director more interested in getting a rise out of him than his acting, and an alleged "curse" that's already claimed one actor, it's the perfect environment for a man to lose himself... or be found.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BoxOfficePulpPodcastTwitter/X: https://x.com/boxofficepulpApple Podcasts: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/box-office-pulp/id577338641Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/7c11ff8b-2875-454d-8770-8b1d36d04b52Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/534ZPRmDoZzNs5GtiAhOEcWays To Listen: https://pod.link/BoxOfficePulpPodcast with Zecastr, offer code BoxOfficePulp

"TOP THAT!" We conjure one of the most important pieces of filmmaking to come out of the 80s this week, and watched Teen Witch staring Robin Lively with our friend Matt Keppel from the band Microfilm.  After a flop theatrical run in 1989, this kooky teen comedy about a sixteen year-old named Louise who discovers she has magical powers, ended up in heavy rotation on Disney Channel where it got its devoted following. Ya'll this movie is an insane explosion of late 80s camp! Complete with denim yoked skirts, crimped hair, and the whitest of rap battles, the famous musical sequences (Top That, and I Like Boys)  have been burned into everyone's brain since. We discuss Joshua Miller's stealing the movie with his insane portrayal of younger brother Richie, Louise's Doctor Manhattan-level witchy powers, and what this movie has in comon with Teen Wolf and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The rules of witchraft as laid out in Teen Wich may be muddy (did Louise erase her nerdy/hot blind date from existence?), but the fashions, catchphrases and spontaneous rap battles will always be a part of our collective consciousness. What will the day of the LORD be for you? It will be darkness and not light. 19 It will be like a man who flees from a lion only to have a bear confront him. He goes home and rests his hand against the wall only to have a snake bite him. 20 Won't the day of the LORD be darkness rather than light, even gloom without any brightness in it? 21 I hate, I despise, your feasts! I can't stand the stench of your solemn assemblies. 22 Even if you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; I will have no regard for your fellowship offerings of fattened cattle. 23 Take away from me the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. 24 But let justice flow like water, and righteousness, like an unfailing stream. (Amos 5:18-24 CSB17) Musical Reflection: “Breathe on Me, Breath of God,” tune by Robert Jackson Reflection Notes: TRENTHAM is a tune by Robert Jackson, an English composer during the nineteenth century. It fits perfectly with the text for “Breath On Me, Breath of God,” by Edwin Hatch; each phrase is allotted ample space for reflection. Prayer: O Lord, our Savior, who has warned us that you will require much of those to whom much is given; grant that we whose lot is cast in so goodly a heritage may strive together more abundantly by prayer, by almsgiving, by fasting, and by every other appointed means, to extend to others what we so richly enjoy; and as we have entered into the labors of other men, so to labor that in their turn other men may enter into ours, to the fulfillment of your holy will, and our own everlasting salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. -Augustine

"Private absolution should be retained in the churches”, the Concordians confess.  Yet, for various reasons the practice has been largely absent from most Lutheran congregations.  We want to follow the Lord's command to forgive and retain sins (John 20 & Matthew 16), but confession should not be a source of more guilt and shame.  Confession/absolution give the benefits of Christ's cross to the sinner which should not have more rules added to it.  The pastor cares for souls by rightly applying Law & Gospel through the office of the keys for repentance and the free forgiveness as from Christ Himself.  Go to confession and receive His blessed forgiveness.   “Baptismal waters cover me, As I approach on bended knee; My Father's mercy here I plead, for grievous sins of thought and deed.”  LSB #616, st 1.  Rev. The routinization of non-invasive prenatal genetic testing (NIPT) raises urgent questions about disability rights and reproductive justice. Supporters defend NIPT on the grounds that genetic information about the fetus helps would-be parents make better family planning choices. Prenatal Genetic Testing, Abortion, and Disability Justice challenges that assessment by exploring how NIPT can actually constrain pregnant women's options. Prospective parents must balance a complicated array of factors, including the familial, social, and financial support they can reasonably expect to receive if they choose to carry a disabled fetus to term and raise after birth, causing many pregnant women to “choose” termination. Focusing on the US, the book explores the intent and effects of prenatal screening in connection to women's bodily autonomy and disability rights, addressing themes at the intersection of genetic medicine, policymaking, critical disabilities studies, and political theory. Knight and Miller shift debates about reprogenetics from bioethics to political practice, as well as thoroughly critiquing the neoliberal state and the eugenic technologies that support it. Providing concrete suggestions for reforming medical practice, welfare policy, and cultural norms surrounding disability, this book highlights sites of necessary reform to envision how prospective parents can make truly free choices about prenatal genetic testing and selection abortion. Asking questions such as, “How are you?” is a common formality in our society – yet often, the person asking the question does not take time to truly listen to or care about the response, thereby rendering the question essentially meaningless. However, questions that are well-framed in terms of both content and context can serve as powerful tools for fostering greater success, happiness, and connection with others, as well as within ourselves.  As a Master Certified Executive and Personal Coach, an Amazon best-selling author, as well as a TEDx speaker, LinkedIn top influencer, and contributing writer for major industry-related journals, Joshua Miller has finetuned the art of using questions to expand possibilities. In Episode 108 of The MINDSet Game® podcast, Josh discusses the following: The difference between open-ended and close-ended questions, and the importance of being present when asking these questions How working on becoming more curious, humble, and vulnerable can help you connect with others and co-create magical new possibilities Why it's also important to be curious and humble when asking yourself open-ended questions, such as “What am I feeling right now?” and “In what areas of my life does a particular pattern keep showing up?”  Specific questions that leaders can ask themselves and their team members in order to improve results, as well as tips for asking these questions in a way that will foster a stronger connection To learn more about Josh, visit his website at https://joshhmiller.com or connect with him on LinkedIn.  To subscribe to The MINDset Game podcast, visit www.TheMINDsetGame.com.
