I want to express gratitude and appreciation to all of the listeners of the podcast and readers of this Substack who have stuck with me thus far, and those of you who have tolerated my gravely and monotonous voice for 100 episodes. Without you here, I have no reason to do this, and I thank you for your time and attention. For episode 100 I bring you the man who brought me into this world (well, I guess my mom would deserve some credit, too, but she ain't here anymore) and helped make me who I am, My Dad.There would be none of this without him, and none of the commentary and writing on the trucking industry without the family legacy, which involves Dad, Uncle Chris, my late Uncle Bruce, and my late Grandfather, Sergeant James E Magill. Dad and I discuss much of the family history and more in this extended conversation, which I hope you enjoy as much as I have enjoyed producing all of these shows and writing for you.You can follow Leonard on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/leonard.magill/To see a bunch of photos of Dad and the family legacy, head over to https://autonomoustruckers.substack.com/p/voice-of-gord-episode-100-featuringThanks for listening, and as always - Questions, Comments, Suggestions, Corrections and Hate Mail are welcomed and strongly encouraged - gordilocks@protonmail.comAs mentioned, I'm writing a book on the fate of the American Trucker in 2025, for more info on that - https://autonomoustruckers.substack.com/p/book-project-announcement-and-a-major

Regular listeners to the Voice Of GO(r)D podcast and readers of this Substack will know that the trucking industry is in a shambles and is likewise facing more pain when the effects of President Trump's tariffs really take hold. What many of you don't know is that some Banking Chickens are about to come home to roost, and these chickens also help us to explain why current market conditions have yet to clear the dead wood out of the industry. The echoes of policies undertaken by the Biden Administration in 2021, matched with the financial industry not learning any lessons from 2008, are of far greater impact to trucking than these tariffs ever could be.Harvey Beech, President of EOS Trucking, joins the show to describe what is going on, and how the financiers behind truck loans are hiding behind ‘deferred payments' in a doomed attempt to avoid the inevitable, and inso doing, are extending the pain for the entire industry. This one is a must listen for everybody in the industry, please share it widely. You can follow Harvey on Twitter - https://x.com/EOSTruckingHarvey is also a partner at American Truckers UnitedI'm on Twitter - https://x.com/GordMagillAnd I'm writing a book on the fate of the American Trucker in 2025 - https://autonomoustruckers.substack.com/p/book-project-announcement-and-a-majorQuestions, comments, suggestions, corrections and Hate Mail are welcomed and strongly encouraged - gordilocks@protonmail.com

The Voice Of GO(r)D podcast is extremely honored to have had the opportunity to introduce to you Mr Shannon Everett, of a legitimate trucker advocacy organization called American Truckers United that has been crunching data on the flooding of America's trucking market with foreign ‘drivers', and how our political class is allowing and actively encouraging our replacement.ATUs look into the issue of Commercial Drivers Licenses (CDLs) over the past decade has revealed some very questionable spikes with various states issuing them at 5 to 10 times the normal rate starting in 2020, and continuing into 2024. The Covid demand spike in 2020 and 2021 does not explain all of this as the spike has continued through the freight crash and recession that started in 2022.Shannon tells us why.ATUs research has also shown a major correlation between the insourcing of foreign labor onto our roads and a slow and steady increase in truck involved collisions and fatalities that curiously start around 2016, when the FMCSA, under the Obama Administration, waived any enforcement of English language proficiency as required under 42 CFR § 391.11 (b)(2).Shannon also describes for us how various states are actively writing legislation not to stop any of this, rather, they actively encourage it by changing definitions and lowering standards for the privilege to operate a Big Rig in America. But he is fighting back, and has an Arkansas State Representative named Wayne Long, who with ATU crafted legislation to prevent Arkansas from lowering standards that allow the insourcing of unvetted foreign labor on to our roads.Shannon also described the economic aspect to this problem, and how the insourcing of all these foreign drivers to America has effectively created two parallel trucking markets that each play by a different set of rules, and, more importantly, a different set of costs, which allows one market to vastly undercut the other.2024 was another bloodbath for small to medium sized trucking companies in America, and if you want to read about the hundreds of closed companies, those seeking bankruptcy protection, and the thousands of drivers who are now unemployed, head on over to FreightWaves - they have an entire section of their website dedicated to nothing but news of this economic disaster.https://www.freightwaves.com/news/category/news/business/layoffs-and-bankruptciesI want to ask everyone who has listened to this podcast or read through the notes here to head over to ATUs website and sign up to become a member, and thus keep up with all of the news in the battle to save the American Trucker, and many lives.https://americantruckers.com/sign-up-now/For more information, charts, data, statistics, and a ton of links on this issue, head on over to https://autonomoustruckers.substack.com/p/the-replacement-of-american-truckersAs always, questions, comments, suggestions, corrections and Hate Mail are welcomed and strongly encouraged - gordilocks@protonmail.com

We open the show with what appeared to be egg on the faces of both AG Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel. Fox Legal Analyst Greg Jarrett says the SDNY FBI office opened themselves up for both investigation and possible criminality. And, I think that was the plan all along. I've said many times, when problems arise on the Left, if it goes to the FBI, it will likely be swept under the rug. Where are we with the Butler, PA assassination attempt? Federal employees continue to fill the news cycle with their wails of harassment over an email. So, I quote a private sector trucker on X who goes by American Trucker. He puts it into perspective. I am back to wanting Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) to be the permanent spokesperson for the DNC. Her rant on the value of X and of Elon Musk is nothing short of brilliant buffoonery. Yesterday, in the Oval Office, VP JD Vance was asked a question about his “free speech” speech last week in Germany. Visiting PM Kier Starmer said he was proud of the UK's stance on free speech. So, I bring you the arrest of a British citizen for sharing something that “caused another anxiety.” And, that's not the worst part of it. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is looking to pull funding out of NATO. Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) has an observation on the people yelling at Elon Musk and DOGE. Former Biden aide Michael LaRosa now says everyone knew Biden was cognitively impaired and knowingly hid it. And, Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent said, while he is a deficit hawk, there is so much broken, they need a slower draw down to fix what Bidenomics wrecked. We close with the “heated” exchange that took place today in the Oval office with the temper-tantrum throwing President Zelenskyy. While Trump was upbeat and happy about signing off on the rare minerals deal, Zelenskyy had other plans. In front of the media, he continued to challenge the US, demanding more and more, acting entitled to whatever he wanted while not committing to the minerals deal. That is what led up to the exchange and Trump admitted he allowed it to go on for over 5 minutes to show the world what we are dealing with in Zelenskyy. The Left will, of course, be all-in for Ukraine, but our Commander-in-Chief put the United States first and showed the world we are not going to be bullied by anyone. At IndustryWeek and other Endeavor Business Media publications, we've seen that trend building with new battery plants, trucking hubs, pharmaceutical operations and plastic injection molding facilities popping up -- operations that might have gone to Asia a decade ago. Americas View of Truckers. I came across an article that depicted the trucking industry and the American Trucker as just pure criminal. The article showed how most people view truckers and their lifestyle. I had forgot how the public looks at you, when you tell them you are a trucker, until I read this story. You would think, the public would respect what men and women go through every day in trucking. But it is just the opposite. They dont honor the men and women that stay on the road for countless weeks and months at a time. It's just the opposite. They're opinion is, most of the times, low, mixed with fear of the working class road warriors. All this animosity towards truckers just might be something we brought on ourselves. You heard of "one bad apple spoils the whole bunch", right? Well, this goes for trucking also. Most truck drivers are not bad people, we give respect and are watching out for the general public on the road. But all you need, is that one guy, thats driving reckless with 72 feet of truck, and it scares everyone. All you need is that one driver, that idles his truck all night, keeping, in his own neighborhood, and we are all disrespectful. All you need, is that small group of drivers, to piss up a Walmart parking lot, and we are all pigs. This is how it happens folks. Man Acquitted of Killing 7 Motorcyclist I remember it like it was yesterday. In 2019, it was all over the news. How a young man killed a bunch of people riding their motorcycles in New Hampshire. The story talked about how it was all the truckers fault. After spending almost the entire time since then, the trucker was set free, after the verdict was read. While on trial, evidence showed, this trucker had been using heroine and other hard core drugs, the day of the accident. But it showed other things too. Apparently, some of the motorcycle riders were past the legal limit of alcohol in their system. All a good lawyer needs to do, is create doubt in the jurors minds. It seems, this is what happened. Witness accounts showed how the trucker was driving erratic, weaving back and forth on this 2 lane road. But all you have to do is make the jury think, there is a chance it wasn't the accused fault, and "not guilty" can be the result. Tune in and hear the breakdown of this tragedy. The Big Shut Down (Semi Trucks). In 1973 a truck driver named named J.W. Edwards shut his semi truck down on Interstate 80 in Pennsylvania. His handle on the C.B. Radio was "River Rat". This would be the first time that the American Trucker got a national voice. Frustrated with an oil embargo Edwards had enough. With diesel jacked high in price and sanctions set on fuel supplies, he was sick of barley making it from fuel stop to fuel stop. Running out of fuel, he decided to shut down right there and hop on his C.B. Radio. With in a day, 10 states were seeing protests and gridlock on the interstates and major highways. Along with the embargo, there was a national push to limit long haul truck drivers to 55mph. This would mean more frustrations and less pay for the truckers. For the most part the protests were deemed peaceful. All but one state, Ohio, was relatively calm. Set state of Ohio however, called for the national guard to remove truckers from picketing and they used tear gas to do it. Never before and since then has there ever been a united force of truckers that effected Americas highways the way this time period did. Truckers yesterday and today United We Stand Divided We Fall Trucker back then used the C.B. Radio for most of their communication. In just one day, their protests were nationally known throughout the community of trucking. They stuck together and were heard loud and clear. Today, it's hard to get two truckers to agree. With social media and politics dividing America, we seem to have forgotten that old saying that we were raised with, "United we Stand, Divided we Fall". The government knows this and that is why you never hear this quote. We are a divided nation and that will always help their cause. Florida Man Naked on A Semi Truck A Florida man was seen running onto a lowboy semi truck this past week. He's also the author of the book "The Big Rig: Trucking and the Decline of the American Dream" in which he explains how long-haul trucking went from being one of the best blue-collar jobs in the US to one of the toughest. His current book project "Driverless? Autonomous Trucks and the Future of the American Trucker" explores self-driving trucks and their potential impacts on labor and the environment. Steve has appeared on CBS News 60 Minutes and most recently on an episode of the Lex Fridman podcast. In this episode of The Logistics Tribe, Steve talks to our host Jonah McIntire about the following topics: - Steve's views on the common narrative that the truck transportation industry in the US is about 80.000 drivers short and that the shortage is only getting worse because many drivers are nearing retirement age - The problem of getting people into the profession vs. keeping people inside the profession - What the reasons are that a lot of drivers are leaving the trucking profession and what they are leaving the profession for - What Steve thinks about various initiatives from the current US administration, for example the "under 21 program" - What the wage and working conditions are really like in different segments of the truck driving business - How real is the infamous 80.000 driver shortage number? - How driver training programs work and how they need to be improved - Potential solutions to the various structural problems in the industry - What role existing and new technology can play - Why drivers are still paid by the mile and what problems arise from that approach - Why the driver shortage is a very "convenient narrative" - What influence can transportation procurement professionals play in improving driver conditions - and more Helpful Links: Steve Viscelli's website: https://www.steveviscelli.com/ Steve Viscelli's podcast episode with Lex Fridman: https://youtu.be/a3Wpy6gE4So Jonah McIntire (Hoste) on LinkedIn: https://nl.linkedin.com/in/jonahmcintire Boris Felgendreher (Founder of The Logistics Tribe) on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/borisfelgendreher/ Our great supporters GreyOrange: https://www.greyorange.com/ BVL Webinar “How flexible automation helped Jysk cope with the unexpected peaks during the pandemic and support their ecommerce growth” on Feb 24, 2022: https://bvl-digital.de/webinare/sendeplan/how-flexible-automation-helped-jysk-cope-with-the-unexpected-peaks-during-the-pandemic-and-support-their-ecommerce-growth/

He's best-known for his trucking hits “Giddyup Go,” “Teddy Bear” and “Phantom 309.” But another single by Red Sovine, a master of the sentimental trucker song, spoke poignantly to the difficult family dynamic of over-the-road haulers and their kin back home. That's “Woman Behind the Man Behind the Wheel.” It's a tribute to truckers' wives, as the lyrics say, a "special breed of woman" that has to "share a love affair with that long stretch of highway on his mind." The theme, however, is more complex, considering the realities of over-the-road drivers being separated from their wives so much, said Todd Uhlman, a professor at the University of Dayton, in Ohio, who specializes in America's socio-cultural history. In this episode of the "Songs of the Highway" special feature to Overdrive Radio as Overdrive celebrates 60 years as the Voice of the American Trucker, hear how the lyrics perpetuate the romantic notion of a long-suffering wife waiting for the return of her faithful husband, yet Uhlman notes certain trucker songs play up “the flip side.” That's the trucker being “on the road and free from his wife and being able to do whatever he wants to do.” Hear more "Songs of the Highway" installments via Overdrive's "Music to Truck By" playlist on SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/overdriveradio/sets/music-to-truck-by-no-1 Access all of Overdrive's weekly 60th-anniversary special coverage via http://overdriveonline.com/trucking-history

A trucker from upstate New York, David Rupert spent seven years informing for the FBI and MI5 while working his way as high as the IRA war council. His lengthy testimony brought justice to several key players in the supply and terrorism networks of the Troubles, including Real IRA leader Mickey McKevitt who'd had a significant role in the Armagh bombing which killed 31 civilians and injured hundreds shortly after the Good Friday Peace Agreement in 1998. Rupert learned his spycraft as he went along, with no prior instruction, only taking occasional counsel from his MI5 handlers and his own instincts from a career in the rough and tenebrous world of interstate trucking. Although he provided a trove of information for the FBI and British Intelligence, Rupert had never agreed to testify against those he'd worked with daily in the IRA. But a PBS documentary about the consequences of the Omagh Bombing convinced him he had to take the stand, which we'll find out wasn't as easy as it sounds. An engaging and congenial Rupert shares his perceptions of the Irish on their northern border from his arrival with his wife and collaborator Maureen, to his testimony deep in the Republic of Ireland, where loyalties are often at odds with personal identity, and safety. It’s not an easy task exploring the reasons for the decline of truckings’ "American Dream" for OTR drivers, company drivers and owner operators. We can make a list of everything wrong with trucking and how it affects truckers, but to pinpoint the problems in order to resolve them is much more difficult. It is a highly intricate and complicated web of obstacles, involving rules and regulations interwoven with industry practices, systems and schemes. Although most of us weren’t a part of trucking prior to deregulation, most will agree that trucking and truck drivers played a major part of the American Dream during that time. Deregulation is not the sole reason for the decline of the American Dream, it has however, caused trucking to evolve into an industry of "them against us" but in order to fix something, we need to understand it. We have the honor to have with us Steve Viscelli, sociologist and long time researcher of  truck drivers and the trucking industry. His pursuit to find out why truckers work so hard and how long-haul trucking went from being one of the best, to one of the toughest blue-collar jobs in the U.S. led him to obtain his CDL and continue his research from behind the wheel. His research, along with his time Over the Road, resulted in his book, “The Big Rig - Trucking and the Decline of the American Dream” Also with us will be our long time friend and fellow advocate Desiree Wood of Real Women In Trucking who will be sharing her present real-time experiences for those who may not be aware of what is currently happening within her organization.
