It did yield some results, however – with findings that showed that those who continue perpetuating the “driver shortage” narrative don't really have a leg to stand on. Understanding what your drivers are experiencing and how they feel about their jobs is critical to keeping them happy. Happy drivers tend to stay put. This episode is about the importance of opening up communication channels with your drivers – and keeping them open. This episode of HDT Talks Trucking is sponsored by Double Coin. Automated dispatch systems may be more efficient than direct two-way conversations, but they make the transaction impersonal. A few lines of text on a screen offer few clues about how the other party is feeling. The driver might be happy today, but ready to head for the door tomorrow. How will you ever know if you never actually talk to them? In this episode, Max Farrell, the CEO of Workhound, joins HDT's Jim Park to discuss the importance of communication and keeping channels open to employees, including: Creating a Real-Time Feedback Loop Between Workers and the Company Why Praise is Critical Opening Up Communication Channels Identifying Micro Issues for Macro Changes Driver Feedback and Troublesome Customers Why Resolving Issues Pays Dividends Honest Feedback: Gift or Insult? I haven't stayed out for more than 3 days in a long time. So it was a little tough on the family as my wife was very busy here at home. You take a walk to go get something to eat which there is nothing close to do so and you drop your trailer in a doc door!! An owner-op who says that he works 12 to 14 hours per day but still lives out of his truck because he doesn't earn enough. we dive into how deregulation helped lower costs for consumers but created hard times for truckers in the 1980s, and how factors like Electronic Logging Device regulations, long detention times, an aging driver population, and lack of home time are causing driver turnover rates over 100%.Support the show Follow us on facebook and Instagram. Hey everyone, Tom Raftery here, and I'm super excited to share this episode of the Digital Supply Chain podcast with you. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Barrett Young, the Head of Fleet Safety Strategy at Netradyne, and we had an insightful conversation about the incredible ways AI technology is revolutionizing fleet safety for commercial vehicles. In our chat, Barrett explains how Netradyne's AI-powered dash cams are helping to create a safer environment for drivers, improving driver retention, and reducing costs related to accidents, insurance claims, and driver turnover. We discuss the importance of positive recognition for drivers and how Netradyne's Green Zone Score is making a difference in coaching and driver behavior.Barrett shares some exciting news about Netradyne's expansion into new markets like the UK, EU, New Zealand, Australia, and India, and how they're working on adapting their AI technology to recognize different road signs and behaviors in each region. We also get a sneak peek into Netradyne's future roadmap, which includes some innovative new products that will challenge the status quo and push the boundaries of what AI can do for fleet safety. As we wrap up the conversation, Barrett leaves us with a thought-provoking question: Can fleets really afford not to have an AI safety system in today's world? I think you'll find his answer quite compelling. So, buckle up and get ready for a fascinating journey into the world of AI and fleet safety. 18WT 063: So many people see trucking as a great opportunity. So they go and get trained either paying themselves for a trucking school, or going through a company and having them pay. Then they get their money back through a 2 year contract typically. Then a few months after training and into their very first otr job, they find out just how difficult truck driving is. Mentally, physically, and emotionally especially if they have family at home. Let's be honest, kids just don't understand the parent being gone for weeks on end. And that is how you make the money. Then there is the point of view of the trucking company. These big companies are willing to train the new people to drive, but people wonder why they pay so low to being with. The reason seems to be that so many new drivers' leave after 6 months of being on their own behind the wheel and being gone from home and learning more about driving and breakdowns, hours of service, split sleeper, and find out that driving is a hard job. They go find jobs driving locally for smaller companies and places like Amazon and UPS. Then that typically leaves the big company out in the cold with a driver they paid to train, that left the company. And yes they no doubt send a bill for the schooling. I bet that is difficult to collect. On the other side you have a few really great companies that pay extremely well and have great benefits. However, you do not walk into those jobs straight out of school. You have to do your “time” as they say and pay your dues until you have enough experience to get into those companies. So, after speaking to drivers we have found that not much has changed with truck driving in one aspect, but really if you think about it, so much really has changed. Since trucks started hauling goods.Full podcast show notes available here: https://www.18wheeltalk.com/e63 Instacart - Groceries delivered in as little as 1 hour. Our guest on this week's episode is Dimitre Kirilov, president of consumer services for Montway Auto Transport. A shortage of qualified drivers has been a reality for years in the trucking industry. With the low unemployment rate, it does not appear that the tight market for drivers will get any better. Our guest talks about what trucking firms need to do to attract new drivers and to retain the drivers they have. With rising costs for packaging supplies and the lack of availability for many packaging products, many shippers are making changes. Some of the changes involve diversifying their supplier base. Others involve changing the types of packaging they are using. A new survey report reveals the details.Rising fuel prices and other increasing costs are placing pressure on companies to be more efficient in their transportation operations. Major retailers are increasingly using technology to help them to better manage their transportation, including technologies for their private fleets. Driver retention is tough, everyone is talking about it. Of course, recruitment is tough too - how do you get leads coming in? How do you get drivers on the phone? But it's retention that's the big topic of conversation - once you've got drivers, how do you make them stay? Rachel Lovell is Vice President of People Operations at Milan Supply Chain Solutions. She started with them 15 years ago, with no driver's licence, straight out of high school, and worked her way up through the ranks to where she is now, handling recruitment and HR. “I'm like the Milan cheerleader, I love the company, I bleed blue is what I tell people because that's one of our main colours. I want everybody's experience to be like mine, I want this to be a hire to retire company.” But the biggest challenge she's up against is retention. “Retention is so important because we need to retain them not just in our own company, we need to retain them in the industry. That's why it's an industry wide effort and why you hear it happen so much.” From the messaging from leadership, to adding to their driver experience team, to utilizing the data from Workhound, to the biggest feedback they've received, don't miss this latest episode of Recruit and Retain with Rachel, and learn what Milan have done to operationalize retention. What you'll learn about in this episode: Why Milan is a hire to retire company The biggest changes in driver retention Becoming driver obsessed Utilizing Workhound Why communication is key to retention Driver retention manager How to connect with Rachel Lovell:LinkedIn - Rachel Lovell Milan Supply Chain Solutions
For years, fleet-driven businesses have watched the pool of available drivers shrink. The shortage is fueled by a number of factors, everything from younger workers coming into the industry at a lower rate than experienced drivers are leaving, to the amplifying impact of COVID-19.For businesses that depend on drivers to deliver goods and services, this trend can be crippling. Finding new drivers is a challenge – and recruiting and training is expensive. Today, host John Carione shares 7 ways you can increase driver retention and keep your fleet on the road. You can download a short guide that captures all of these ideas plus some pro tips at: https://info.intellishift.com/retention
What if you could increase driver recruitment and retention by focusing on getting and keeping drivers fit? There are so many carriers out there claiming they’re the number one for safety, they have the best signing bonuses, they have the highest CPM, but what if you could differentiate your carrier by putting driver health first? In today’s episode, Chad talks to Mark Manera, founder of The Trucking Fitness Company - the ultimate health and wellness experience for drivers. “I help trucking companies make more money by decreasing work comp/health insurance costs, improving retention, and creating safer drivers.” Mark’s a-ha moment came to him when he was working with a driver in a physical therapy clinic. The driver had had a total knee replacement, and on diving into what a 40 year career in trucking and life on the road looked like, Mark was able to see the good and bad aspects of the industry. “When I started talking to him about, ‘hey, how often are you exercising? What are you eating out there on the road?’ I could tell there was a mindset of, ‘I'm a truck driver. That's not what we do. We don't exercise, that's part of the job description.” It struck Mark, what if there was a way to workout without leaving your truck? If you could simply pull your phone out and workout wherever you are, anywhere in the world, without needing equipment or a gym membership? And so the idea for The Trucking Fitness Company was born. To find out how The Trucking Fitness Company could help you better recruit and retain drivers, download and listen to this episode. “What we've found is that the exercise piece is really a domino. That when we can get drivers to exercise on a consistent basis and make exercise a part of their daily routine, every other aspect of their life becomes healthier.” What you’ll learn about in this episode: When drivers are healthier, everyone wins The problem with short term programs Accountability and community Restaurant guides How to connect with Mark Manera: LinkedIn: Mark Manera www.truckinfit.com

How can you maintain a referral rate of 90% and a retention rate 95.7%? Don’t miss Jessica Kapasky, the Recruitment and Retention Guru at Skelton Truck Lines, a pharmaceutical haulage carrier operating trucking teams (pharmaceutical logistic technicians) out of Canada and the US, on this week’s episode. But first, how does one become a Recruitment and Retention Guru? “I am third generation in trucking. My grandparents were executives behind the wheel. My mother's a really well known recruiter in the industry. My dad was a driver. My brother's a driver. So I guess you can say I was born into it.” Not only does Jessica have trucking in her blood, she’s also obsessed with trying to become an industry expert, taking time to get educated, spending years researching ways to better herself as a recruiter. She’s learned what it takes to recruit on the more corporate side of things, as well as learning how to connect with candidates and making sure she can find them the best fit based on what they’re looking for right now, whether that's their lifestyle, pay package, or the lanes they want to run. One of the best pieces of advice Jessica’s father passed onto her was: “Make sure you're hiring for the right fit. I think that's the biggest thing he branded into me. And what I have carried is the importance of hiring drivers that fit your mould versus the other way around.” You want quality over quantity. So to find out how to hire for the right fit, why snail mail marketing will set you apart from other carriers, how Skelton maintains a referral rate of 90% and a retention rate of 95.7% and what their pay and benefits package looks like, download and listen to this latest episode. In our first episode of 2019, Kelly and Tim hear from three different drivers about why they have left, or are leaving, their companies. All three drivers voice "broken expectations" as their #1 reason for leaving. A frequent caller, "NuttyButty", clarifies that high pay will only go so far. Broken promises and unclear expectations easily ruin the satisfaction of a solid paycheck. Drivers are much more likely to stay with their current carriers if they know what is expected of them. Pro KJ Tip: Companies should sit down with new drivers and schedule regular check-ins with current drivers to discuss upcoming expectations.
