Dr. Peter Williams is the Principal of Tyndale House Cambridge and a lecturer on Hebrew language at the University of Cambridge. He earned his M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge studying ancient languages related to the Bible. Prior to leading Tyndale House, Williams was a Senior Lecturer in New Testament in the University of Aberdeen. He has spoken in churches, universities, seminaries, high schools and at conferences and seminars/workshops across the US and the world on Biblical subjects including Bible translation, apologetics, and how to understand the Scriptures. Tyndale House Cambridge is currently researching, transcribing and publishing the Codex Climaci Rescripts (CCR) on behalf of the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC. The CCR is the most important manuscript of Christian Palestinian Aramaic and also contains other treasures, including an early Greek harmony of the Gospels and the earliest manuscript of the Greek astronomer Eratosthenes. Williams is personally leading this project. Williams chairs the International Greek New Testament Project, which is currently producing the world's most comprehensive information on the manuscripts of John's Gospel.

This week we look at two different Christian views of Divorce and Remarriage. Andrew Cornes is part of the clergy team at All Souls Eastbourne.  He holds to the traditional understanding that Jesus taught divorce is only permissible for adultery, and that the Bible forbids remarriage. David Instone-Brewer is a New Testament scholar from Tyndale House Cambridge.  He believes the church has misunderstood Jesus teaching on divorce.  He claims that Jesus was responding to "any cause" divorce - a Rabbinical view of divorce popular at the time. Jerry Pattengale is a prolific and award-winning author and academic. A long-time executive and inaugural University Professor at Indiana Wesleyan University. He was one of two founding scholars for the Museum of the Bible and in executive leadership until retiring last year. He is associate publisher for Christian Scholar's Review and on the boards for Yale's Jonathan Edwards Center and Africa New Life (Rwanda), and the membership committee for the National Press Club. He holds distinguished appointments at Tyndale House Cambridge, the Sagamore Institute, Excelsia College (Australia), the Moody Center, and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Just last month Jerry appeared before the United Nations where he spoke about protecting religious spaces. And he is the president of the Religion News Foundation. On a personal note, I showed up at Indiana Wesleyan as a freshman in 1998. I was an aspiring intellectual. Alright. Now it'd be a stretch to call me an intellectual today. But back then I was aspiring. And I had World Civ to 1600 with this guy and he was the embodiment of the ideal professor in my mind. He was kinda like my Indiana Jones. He was inspiring in the classroom, and I have so many stories and personal notes about Jerry outside the classroom. What I appreciated about this interview: The word “honing” comes up a lot. God hones us and we hone ourselves. God may bring us experiences to help us hone our gifts or our skills. We are also responsible for doing our own honing. The discipline required to hone a gift or a skill. We talked about the “Wedge” principle -- and the narrower your wedge the deeper you can go. I asked him about a line from a past interview, “At 40 you accept certain limitations for your life, and limitations are a gift.” (Rick Soto). Jerry thought this was true in the sense that as you limit yourself you are getting a more narrow wedge and you can do deeper. I first met Jerry when he was about 40 and viewed him as very successful, but it was not until he was 37 that much started to come together. Jerry is quotable: “The dream needs to be stronger than the struggle.” “Sometimes you need to fall off one cliff to climb another.” He talked about how none of us really know what are real contribution is. We're holding onto “tarnished trophies” that don't matter. Jerry talked about things that he'll never do. Students of Jerry's may remember his “Crossing the Jordan” lecture. Moses, would never cross the Jordan River. His understudy Joshua would. I asked Jerry, “What's your Jordan?” His answer was very interesting to me! This is a great interview. In the spring of 1989 syndicated talk show host Larry King interviewed Shirley MacLaine on the New Age. When a Christian caller challenged her view with an appeal to the New Testament, MacLaine brushed him off with the objection that the Bible has been changed and translated so many times over the last 2000 years that it's impossible to have any confidence in its accuracy. King was quick to endorse her "facts." "Everyone knows that," he stated and the conversation moved on. The case against the BIble's reliability goes like this...How can we know that the documents we have in our possession accurately reflect originals destroyed almost two millennia ago? Communication is never perfect; people make mistakes. Errors are compounded with each successive generation - have you ever played the telephone game?? By the time 2000 years pass, it's anyone's guess what the original said. This criticism comes from those who don't know the real issues. They are ignorant of the facts. The question of authenticity is not really a religious concern at all; it's an academic one. It can be answered in an academic way which is completely unrelated to spiritual convictions. So I'd like to introduce you to our special guest speaker this Sunday: Dr. Peter Williams. He is the principal of Tyndale House Cambridge. I had the privilege of studying at Tyndale House in the summer of 2015 and the library is remarkable. Dr. Williams is a also a lecturer on Hebrew language at the University of Cambridge. He earned his M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D., at the University of Cambridge studying ancient languages related to the Bible. Prior to leading Tyndale House, he was a Senior Lecturer in New Testament in the University of Aberdeen. In other words, this guy knows his stuff and I'm super glad he will be with us.
