On October 30, 1975, the New York Daily News printed the most famous headline in its history: “Ford to City: Drop Dead.” The previous day, President Gerald Ford had delivered a speech at the National Press Club in Washington on the looming bankruptcy of New York City. In the speech, Ford publicly denied the near-bankrupt New York City a federal bailout. The next morning, the streets of Manhattan were littered with the incendiary headline.  It has been fifty years since the publication of the headline, which presents an opportunity to reconsider this historical period. In this special edition episode, host Ryan Purcell talks with Benjamin Holtzman, Assistant Professor of History at Lehman College (CUNY), about the soundtracks behind New York's fiscal crisis. Holtzman is the author of The Long Crisis: New York and the Path to Neoliberalism (Oxford University Press, 2023), a volume that returns to this turbulent period to explore the origins and implications of the diminished faith in government as capable of solving public problems. In the wake of the fiscal crisis of 1975, Holtzman argues, local people and officials rebuilt the city from the ground up, creating a system that would both exacerbate old racial and economic inequalities and produce new ones that continue to shape metropolitan areas today. This past Tuesday, the material handling industry recognized the 12th annual National Forklift Safety Day. Wood speaks about the event held this week and the importance and impacts of safety programs.Carriers looking to fill driver positions need to act faster when they identify candidates and ensure that their hiring process is efficient, according to a new report from truck driving technology platform Tenstreet. They found that carriers in their network that responded to driver applications within five minutes see a 6.2% hiring rate, which is nearly double the platform average of 3.7%.—so that speaks to the need for fast action. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has launched a new program called the Initiative for New Manufacturing (INM). In this episode of Hearts of Oak, I welcome back Todd Bensman as he prepares to join the administration to tackle immigration challenges. Todd shares insights on the dramatic shifts in border enforcement since the Trump administration, including the decline in daily crossings and the need for increased deportations amid legal and infrastructure hurdles. We discuss the complexities of federal agency coordination, strategies against drug cartels related to the fentanyl crisis, and the role of tariffs to encourage Mexican cooperation. As Todd transitions to a policy advisor role, he reflects on navigating the political landscape within the Republican party while aiming for meaningful immigration reforms that balance national security with economic factors. Todd Bensman is an investigative author of the 2023 book OVERRUN, How Joe Biden Unleashed the Greatest Border Crisis in U.S. History (Posthill Press/Bombardier Books) and also America's Covert Border War: The Untold Story of the Nation's Battle to Prevent Jihadist Infiltration (Posthill Press/Bombardier Books, February 2021).   The two-time National Press Club award winner, a former journalist of 23 years, currently serves as the Texas-based Senior National Security Fellow for the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), a Washington, D.C. policy institute for which he writes, speaks, and grants media interviews about the nexus between immigration and national security. He frequently reports from the southern border, traveling widely inside Mexico and in Central America. He has testified before Congress as an expert witness and regularly appears on radio and television outlets to discuss illegal immigration and border security matters.   He writes about homeland security and terrorism subjects for Newsweek Magazine, Homeland Security Today, The New York Post, The Daily Mail, Townhall, The Federalist, the Investigative Project on Terrorism, SpyTalk, The Daily Wire, The National Interest, and other publications. He serves as a Writing Fellow for the Middle East Forum and also teaches terrorism, intelligence analysis, and journalism as a university adjunct lecturer.   For nearly a decade prior to joining CIS in August 2018, Bensman led counterterrorism intelligence for the Texas Department of Public Safety's Intelligence and Counterterrorism Division and its multi-agency fusion center. Before his homeland security service, Bensman worked as a reporter for more than two decades, covering national security after 9/11 as an investigative staff writer for major newspapers.   Contact Todd at news@toddbensman.com and sign up for his newsletter to receive alerts when new columns and reports publish. On October 29, 1975, President Gerald Ford walked into a press conference at the National Press Club and, using more precise, more eloquent words than legend remembers, but in no uncertain terms, told New York City that the federal government was not going to bail it out.The following day the New York Daily News -- the city's first tabloid newspaper summarized his blunt, castigating speech into one succinct and memorable headline -- FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD.Of course, the president never literally said DROP DEAD. But his words did signal the severity of New York City's problem -- the city was on the brink of bankruptcy. In this episode, Greg dives into life in New York City during the year 1975 and the circumstances surrounding its most dire financial crisis, one which threatened the livelihoods of its millions of residents and damaged New York City's reputation for decades.Directors Peter Yost and Michael Rohatyn join Greg to discuss their new film on the New York financial crisis Drop Dead City, which uses gritty archival footage and a series of special guests (such as Harrison J. Goldin, Charlie Rangel, Betsy Gotbaum and former Bowery Boys guest Kevin Baker) to explain this complicated story. If Michael's name looks familiar, that's because his father Felix Rohatyn played a critical role in bailing out the bankrupt city.Visit the website for more informationMore information on DROP DEAD CITY here

Today's show features a conversation with Charles Burnett, who Martin Scorsese and Steven Soderbergh credit as one of America's greatest filmmakers.  His creative works tell personal and intimate stories – exploration of culture, relationships, social justice, mental illness, discrimination, and love. He was born in Mississippi in 1944 but moved to Watts in South Los Angeles in 1947. Killer of Sheep, based on his life in Watts,  was his student thesis film at UCLA but it wasn't until he was awarded an honorary Academy Award in 2017 that it began to be seen. It was his first full-length feature and took five years to complete, and it set him apart, even at a young age, as a great filmmaker. The '60s were not necessarily kind to Black filmmakers and complicated music rights kept Killer of Sheep away from wide distribution until Steven Soderberg took it under his wing and helped restore it. He also cleared the music rights and found distribution.  It has since been admitted into the Library of Congress and called a national treasure. Other films from Charles include “The Annihilation of Fish” with James Earl Jones and Lynn Redgrave; My Brother's Wedding, The Glass Shield, and To Sleep With Anger starring Danny Glover. Martin Scorcese was quoted in a review by Daniel Borrero, saying, “Charles Burnett is one of the finest filmmakers in this country. His pictures speak in a unique voice that is uniquely and completely his own.  I am honored to be speaking with Charles Burnett and am grateful for his candor about the industry and his gracious depiction of unfolding events in his life. EPISODE #1159 SIXTY DAYS TO DISCLOSURE SAYS STEPHEN BASSETT Richard speaks with Stephen Bassett, one of the world's leading advocates for ending the UFO truth embargo, who believes we are mere weeks away from an event that will shake the very foundation of our reality. He says the President of the United States is poised to confirm what many have long suspected—that extraterrestrial beings are here, have been here, and our government has known all along. Think about that for a moment. What does life look like the day after disclosure? How will the world react? And if this revelation is imminent, why now? What forces are at play behind the scenes, pushing the most closely guarded secret in modern history into the light? Bassett has been at the forefront of this fight for decades. He's worked to bring UAP testimony before Congress, launched political initiatives injecting UFOs into presidential campaigns, and even co-founded the Hollywood Disclosure Alliance to prepare the public for the truth. Is this the final chapter of the great cover-up? Or just the beginning of a new reality? GUEST: Stephen Bassett is a global leader in the push for UFO disclosure, speaking in 20 countries on the political impact of UAP and extraterrestrial engagement. As executive director of Paradigm Research Group (PRG) and co-founder of the Hollywood Disclosure Alliance, he works to end government secrecy and prepare for a post-disclosure world. Featured on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, The Washington Post, and The New York Times, Bassett has appeared in numerous documentaries and is widely represented on YouTube. In 2013, he organized the Citizen Hearing on Disclosure at the National Press Club, simulating congressional hearings on ET presence. His 2014-16 political initiative injected UFOs into the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign. In December 2023, he co-founded the Hollywood Disclosure Alliance to connect UAP/ET researchers with filmmakers, shaping accurate narratives in entertainment. PRG continues to push for full congressional hearings on UAP testimony, spearheading efforts like the Shift Storm activist project.
