What do a detective novelist, a WWII radio drama, and a blockbuster film have in common? According to Dr. Crystal Downing — everything. In this episode of Thinking Christian, I’m joined by Dr. Crystal Downing, former co-director of the Marion E. Wade Center and author of The Wages of Cinema, to explore what it means to see Christianly. Drawing on the often-overlooked theology of Dorothy L. Sayers, we challenge the idea that film is just a vehicle for a message. Instead, we unpack how film — like the Incarnation — is about form, flesh, and the fullness of expression. We talk about why reducing movies to “good messages” is a kind of cinematic Docetism, how Sayers’ Trinitarian model of creativity reframes Christian art, and why Christians should stop watching movies passively and start engaging them as embodied works of meaning. Expect commentary on Birdman, Bridge on the River Kwai, The Matrix, and yes… even Dodgeball. This conversation is a deep dive into media, theology, and why Christians need to become more attentive critics — not just consumers — of the stories that shape us.
It's the week after Easter, but Christ is still risen and we are still excited to worship the risen King together!

Sermon by Fr. Carl SmithSuffering and Glory SeriesMy message today was on "Suffering in (Pagan) Society," with a heavy focus on the subject of submission. This is not a popular topic, but I think it is foundational to our discipleship as well as a crucial posture for living Christianly in the world. Here are some questions that should generate some thoughtful and impactful discussion this week:Discussion Questions:Does the topic of submission cause a negative reaction in you? If so, what do you think is the basis of that reaction? (E.g., is it cultural, bad experiences, or what?). Do you think more about Jesus Christ as your "Savior" or as your '"Lord"? What is the difference to you? Do you think submission to someone requires that you trust them? If not, what does it require? Or, what does submission entail and look like for you?Do you think about Christianity as a revolutionary religion? If so, in what sense or manner is it revolutionary? Do you think that it advocates political violence?Do you have the sense that submitting to God first and foremost gives you freedom to submit to others? Is it difficult for you to honor those to whom you are called to submit? Do you view Jesus as an example for you in terms of suffering and submission? What does this look like practically for your life?Does the challenge to "entrust your soul to him who judges justly" seem like a helpful way to embrace submission and suffering? What difference would this make? In what ways might submission promote the mission of Jesus Christ? Does "putting to silence the ignorance of foolish men" sound missional to you? Think of your most difficult relationship for you to embrace submission. What might "doing good" look like in that relationship?

To kick off 2025, we are spotting ways in which the DNA of the faith one for all delivered to the saints (Jude 3) is mutated and changed.Title: Surely Nothing is SureScripture Reading: Psalm 25:4-5One of the mutations that poses as a more Christianly, humble, loving, attitude to have is this idea that nothing is sure. That somehow certainty, surety, and confidence are arrogant and uncertainty, questioning, and prevarication are more loving, more Christlike, more Christian. But this is reversal. David, in Psalm 25 shows us that, especially when we're in crisis, the surety of our faith is not only necessary, but more loving, more Christ-like, and more Christian.

Various Scripture - According to Jesus, the Bible is the authoritative, inspired, unbreakable word of God that all leads to Him. The Bible is also a word of man with a very complicated and human history. At the same time, the Bible is a unified but incredibly diverse work of literary artistry spanning many authors, genres, and tones. To encounter the Bible is like stepping into a gallery containing the transcendently beautiful, the shockingly ugly, and the fascinatingly complex all at once. The Bible itself and as a whole is an irreplaceable guide for thinking Christianly about the arts. A sermon by Cameron Heger. [Part 3 of our series "Looking the World to Grace: Art, Makers & the Christian Life"] Questions for reflection: 1) What is your relationship to the Bible like right now? What aspects of it are life-giving? What aspects are challenging or discouraging? 2) How did Jesus himself view the Bible of HIs day (the Old Testament)? What role did it play in His life? 3) Talk about the significance of God using human partners to author His sacred Scripture with Him? 4) What does it mean to read the Bible "literarily"? How/when does this overlap with a "literal" reading? How does it distinguish itself? 5) What do you make of the especially bizarre, grotesque, or dark biblical passages? 6) How might some of these ideas help get us beyond boredom with the Bible? 7) How does the life, death, resurrection, and reign of Jesus anchor our relationship to the Bible?

On this episode of the podcast, we bring you a live interview in collaboration with the co-hosts of the Hallway Conversations podcast. Our featured guest is Dr. David Mulder, who has written a new book: Always Becoming, Never Arriving. This episode is a conversation about the craft of teaching and what it means to "teach Christianly". Among the topics we discuss: Some of the biggest misconceptions and surprises about teaching What it means to develop a "teaching imagination" and to say that teaching is a calling. The relationship between play, improvisation, and technique in the classroom How to take our work seriously without taking ourselves seriously How to teach "who we are" while also taking into account what students need and what the material requires Why most definitions of what it means to teach Christianly are incomplete Even if you're not working in Christian education, it's a great opportunity to look over the shoulder of a master teacher who is passionate about his craft. I recently read through a report on teens and screens from the Center for Scholars and Storytellers at the University of California. I want you to hear these important words from the reports introduction: “An alarming proportion of today's adolescents are facing unprecedented mental health challenges, and they are inundated with storytelling media that exerts a powerful influence. Media is more present than ever before, with many estimates indicating that youth spend up to nine hours on screens outside of school. Screens and the internet touch every aspect of a young person's life – school, communication with friends, and leisure activities. Adolescents learn from these images and messages; thus, storytellers can and should be mindful of the social-emotional influence they have on the next generation.” Parents, are you listening? We have a responsibility to not only set limits, but to help our kids to bring God glory by thinking critically and Christianly about all the media they consume.

Where is your treasure? Where are your priorities? Are there any changes that need made to measure up to God's priority? In this episode, Jeff and Joe discuss: Learning from a young age to organize life around the Kingdom of God.Helping Christians to think Christianly around work, wealth, and capital.Introducing God's rest and peace into existence through our work.Using our wealth of restorative purposes for God's purpose of reconciliation.Understanding the basic principle of tithing then experiencing the joy of radical generosity beyond that. Key Takeaways: The Earth and everything in it is the Lord's. We are stewards of His trust. We are administrators to advance His purposes by developing and cultivating the wealth that He has placed in creation through hard work and creativity.Love God and love your neighbor as yourself - the two great commandments. Are your financial priorities honoring those principles? Two of the Ten Commandments are dedicated to the issue of property and how we honor God and others with it.That begins to provide a basis and a foundation for thinking about property. You can only be disillusioned if you have illusions. If we make wealth an idol, it will be an empty promise and will never deliver. "We use our money, our wealth, for restorative purposes, to advance God's purpose of reconciling all things to Jesus Christ. That's bringing all things into obedience and submission." — Rev. What does Christian faithfulness look like in the public square? Should Christians be involved in politics, and how should that affect our voting decisions? How should a biblical worldview influence how we vote? With election season upon us, we've all seen the ads and messages. It's crucial for disciples of Jesus to think Christianly about this (as with every other area of life). In this episode we will explore some biblical principles to keep in mind as you engage and navigate a divided public square as a follower of Christ. For More...Think Christianly: Looking at the Intersection of Faith and Culture by Jonathan MorrowOs Guinness on Navigating Our Divided CultureLearn more about Investing in the Next Generation of Disciples Life-Changing Experiences that Help the Next Generation Live Out Their Faith With Confidence (Learn More)

Would you say we’re in a discipleship crisis? Pastor and blogger Tim Suffield lives in the U.K. and he says this: “Our lives look the same as our neighbors and they shouldn’t. We don’t all have to be radical, but we do need a small number of radicals among us to help us see that our lives could be different.” You'll want to listen to this challenging conversation! https://nuakh.uk/2024/07/11/we-cant-think-or-live-christianly/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

(08:24-16:17) “We should avoid the dangers of both the warrior mentality that can lead to anger and the passivity that can generate separatism and seclusion. This is no mushy middle, but a stalwart high ground on which one will not lose footing or tumble off in either direction. Walking this tightrope requires the pursuit of virtuous living that demonstrates Christians to be the best citizens.” Dr. Stephen Presley, Cultural Sanctification (page 70). “I choose not to fall on either side, but have a posture of confidence, of hope, of fortitude, of living faithfully in this situation and that is what I found in the early church doing.” Dr. Stephen Presley. For no where do they live in cities of their own, nor do they speak some unusual dialect, nor do they practice an eccentric lifestyle. They demonstrate the remarkable and admittedly unusual character of their own citizenship, that is, they live in their own countries as aliens, they participate in everything as citizens, yet endure everything as foreigners. They live on earth, but their citizenship is on Heaven.” – The Epistle to Diognetus Scripture Mentioned: Romans 13:1, 1 Peter 2:13-17, 1 Peter 3:14-17. In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the widespread campus protests that have been dominating the headlines of late. More than 2800 students have been arrested across 50 campuses across the U.S. Many Americans are unsure about what to think about all of these protests, and have mixed feelings about the response from college administrators to the protests. So how should we think Christianly about what's happening across the country? Episode Links The best place to begin is by trying to have a deeper understanding of the conflict itself. While today's conversation does explore that, we'd suggest you go back and listen to CCP80: On the War in Israel. Dr. White and Alexis also mentioned the number of news stories of late tied to these protests happening across the U.S. Here are the ones specifically tied to today's conversation - we hope you'll take the time to read them: Jerusalem Demsas, “The Problem With America's Protest Feedback Loop,” The Atlantic, May 10, 2024.
