United Cigars always has a lot of new activity at their booth, and the 2024 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show was no exception. This year, United Cigars reintroduced an old brand, expanded its eponymous United brand, and celebrated the 30th anniversary of the La Gianna Havana brand. However, there was a slight difference as Selected Tobacco, owned by Nelson Alfonso and distributed by United Cigars, did not have a separate booth due to visa problems for Alfonso. This year, the brand expansions hit both ends of the spectrum - this includes adding four new sizes to its ultra-premium Red Anchor brand and a new regular production offering to its Firecracker brand with the Black Bomb Firecracker. Coming in at #16 is the Bandolero Firecracker by Selected Tobacco. The Firecracker Series started out in 2007 as the brainchild of Two Guys Smoke Shop owner Dave Garofalo. It's a series where he would work with leading manufacturers to produce a small 3 1/2 inch cigar with a long-fuse resembling a Firecracker. In recent years, the Firecracker Series has moved over to United Cigars and now is available for a national limited release to authorized retailers. In 2022, the Bandolero Firecracker was introduced. Bandolero is a brand under Nelson Alfonso's Selected Tobacco. While United Cigars has been distributed Selected Tobacco for almost a decade, this still marks the first Firecracker installment done with Selected Tobacco. The blend for the Bandolero Firecracker is derived from the Clandestino line (Serie C) that uses filler leaves from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and undisclosed tobaccos. The Bandolero Firecracker features an Ecuadorian binder and a dark Ecuadorian wrapper that is typically used on the Aventureros line (Serie A). The Firecracker itself measures 3 1/2 x 50. Production comes from Tabacos de Costa Rica located in Costa Rica. The Bandolero Firecracker delivers notes of natural tobacco, earth, cedar, hay, and black pepper. This will be a cigar that delivers a medium-strength, medium-bodied smoking experience. The flavors aren't necessarily the most flashy or exotic flavors, but they complement each other extremely well. One important note, if sometimes a Firecracker is too short in terms of smoking duration, the Bandolero Firecracker is a slow burn that can provide about an hour for the smoking experience. For Selected Tobacco, this marks the first year and first time the company has secured a spot on a Cigar Coop Countdown. It's also the first time on the 2022 Countdown that Costa Rica has placed a cigar. It's a series where he would work with leading manufacturers to produce a small 3 1/2 inch cigar with a long-fuse resembling a Firecracker. Before you ask why a shop-exclusive is on the Countdown, this is not the case. In recent years, the Firecracker Series has moved over to United Cigars and now is available for a national limited release to authorized retailers. The Perdomo Firecracker feature 100% Nicaraguan tobaccos. The wrapper from the Firecracker is the one that is featured on the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown. The cigar is a 3 1/2 x 50 vitola - easily the smallest cigar to land a Cigar Coop Countdown. The 2020 edition features the long fuse tucked under the cigar band. There was also a 2021 edition which didn't have the fuse tucked under the band. The Perdomo Firecracker might be small, but there is a ton of complexity loaded in this cigar. The cigar delivers notes of earth, nut, grapefruit, natural tobacco, coffee bean, wood, and black pepper. This is also a bold little cigar - delivering strength and body in the medium to full range. This is the second year in a row Perdomo Cigars has landed on the Countdown. This is also the third cigar Perdomo Cigar and third cigar from Tabacalera Perdomo to land on the 2021 Countdown. Coming in at #28 is the Abuelo Padre. In 2021, United Cigars would resurrect a brand called Abuelo. The Abuelo line was released over 20 years ago. At the time, United Cigar's owner David Garofalo's brother-in-law John was going to become a grandfather. Shortly after the brand's release, John passed away and the brand essentially became dormant. Fast forward to 2021, and now David Garofalo has become a grandfather himself and decided to resurrect the brand. To produce the 2021 version of the brand, Garofalo sought out Julio R. Eiroa, the owner of JRE Tobacco Company, to produce the blend. Eiroa had also produced the original version of the Abuelo. Abuelo uses 100 percent Honduran-grown tobaccos from the JRE Tobacco farm. This includes a Honduran Habano wrapper and Authentic Corojo for the binder and filler. The Padre is a classic Toro size measuring 6 x 52. Produced at the Eiroa's Fabrica de Puros Aladino S.A in Las Lomas, Abuelo Padre delivers flavors of natural tobacco, bread, cedar, citrus, baker's spice, and pepper. This isn't an overpowering cigar. It's a cigar that starts out mild to medium in strength before progressing to medium in the second third. The flavors delivered are medium-bodied. The Abuelo Padre gives United Cigar its first entry on a Cigar Coop Countdown. It's also the sixth consecutive entry that the Las Lomas factory has landed on the Coop Countdown.
