The idea of civility goes back to classical Rome and the ways in which citizens engaged one another within the republic. The term itself is often used in a number of different ways, reflecting expected behavior, particularly in public spaces, and as a mechanism to manage human interaction. But civility and the use of this idea often shape hierarchical relationships within society and within politics and may define who is to be included within the polis and who may be excluded. Thus, the conversations that led to the new book, Civility Unbound: Contesting a Democratic Value, interrogated the idea of civility in many of its facets and did not necessarily settle on a simple definition or means of implementing civility within contemporary society. Michael DiNiscia, Director of Research and Strategic Initiatives at New York University's Brademas Center, and Ellyn Toscano, Director of the Hawthorndon Foundation, edited this valuable exploration of the idea of civility within democracy. In so doing, they brought together academics, politicians and former politicians, activists, artists, and individuals from the foundation world to discuss this controversial idea of civility, unpacking the term, the way it is used, and how society may consider civility within the realm of politics and public life. I had the pleasure of discussing Civility Unbound with Michael DiNiscia and Hussein Rashid, one of the contributing authors. Our conversation covered the content of the book, tracing the sections that include philosophy and political theory, democratic institutions and politics, social justice and protest, media engagement, and lessons from arts and culture. Riesci a leggere un libro in italiano? E soprattutto… fino a che livello riesci ad arrivare? In questo articolo lo scopri con un test di lettura completo, dal livello A1 al livello C2, costruito su frasi vere prese da sei capolavori della letteratura italiana: Pinocchio, Cuore, Il fu Mattia Pascal, I Malavoglia, La coscienza di Zeno e I promessi sposi. Alla fine saprai esattamente qual è il tuo livello di lettura, e conoscerai anche qualche segreto sui libri più famosi d'Italia. Il Grande Test dei Classici Italiani da Pinocchio ai Promessi Sposi Le regole sono semplicissime. Per ogni livello troverai un brano di uno dei sei classici, seguito da due domande: una di grammatica e una di vocabolario. Un livello è "superato" se rispondi correttamente ad almeno una domanda su due. Il tuo livello di lettura è l'ultimo livello che riesci a superare. Se fai due su due… complimenti, livello superato a pieni voti! Mi raccomando: niente dizionario e niente traduttore, altrimenti il test non vale. Prima di iniziare, puoi anche dare un'occhiata alla nostra guida sui libri italiani da leggere. Livello A1 — "Le Avventure di Pinocchio" di Carlo Collodi (1883) Cominciamo con il libro italiano più tradotto al mondo: Pinocchio! Piccola curiosità: "Collodi" non era il vero cognome dell'autore. Lui si chiamava Carlo Lorenzini, ma scelse come nome d'arte il nome del paese toscano della sua mamma: Collodi, appunto. Ecco l'inizio del libro, uno degli inizi più famosi di tutta la letteratura: «C'era una volta… — Un re! — diranno subito i miei piccoli lettori. No, ragazzi, avete sbagliato. C'era una volta un pezzo di legno.» Un consiglio prima delle domande: al livello A1 non serve capire ogni parola! Per rispondere ti bastano quelle che conosci. Ah, e "diranno" è il verbo DIRE al futuro semplice: un tempo che si studia al livello A2, quindi niente panico. Domande del Livello A1 Grammatica: nel testo c'è "avete sbagliato". Qual è l'infinito di questo verbo? Vocabolario: che cos'è il "legno"? A) un animale del bosco B) il materiale degli alberi: serve per fare tavoli e sedie C) un tipo di pane Soluzioni del Livello A1 L'infinito è SBAGLIARE. "Avete sbagliato" è un passato prossimo: verbo AVERE al presente + participio passato (sbagliato). E il legno è ovviamente la risposta B: il materiale degli alberi. Infatti Pinocchio è proprio un burattino fatto di legno. Livello A2 — "Cuore" di Edmondo De Amicis (1886) Saliamo di livello con Cuore, il diario di un bambino di Torino, Enrico, che racconta un anno di scuola. Questo libro ha fatto piangere intere generazioni di italiani: ancora oggi, quando una storia è molto commovente e sentimentale, diciamo che è "da libro Cuore"! «Oggi primo giorno di scuola. Passarono come un sogno quei tre mesi di vacanza in campagna! Mia madre mi condusse questa mattina alla Sezione Baretti a farmi inscrivere per la terza elementare: io pensavo alla campagna e andavo di mala voglia.» Prima delle domande, una nota importante: hai visto "passarono" e "condusse"? Sono al passato remoto, un tempo che troverai spessissimo nei libri. Per ora ti basta riconoscere che è un passato: "passarono" = "sono passati", "condusse" = "ha accompagnato". "Inscrivere" è semplicemente la forma antica di "iscrivere". Ultima cosa: "andare di mala voglia" significa andare malvolentieri, senza voglia. Tieni a mente questa espressione: tra poco tornerà utile! Domande del Livello A2 Grammatica: nel testo c'è "QUEI tre mesi". Perché si dice "quei" e non "quelli" o "quegli"? Vocabolario: che cos'è la "campagna"? A) il contrario della città: un posto con campi, alberi e animali B) un tipo di scuola C) una stagione dell'anno Soluzioni del Livello A2 Il dimostrativo QUELLO, davanti a un nome, si comporta esattamente come l'articolo determinativo. Ecco lo schema: ArticoloForma di QUELLOEsempioilquelquel libroloquelloquello studentel' (maschile)quell'quell'amicola / l' (femminile)quella / quell'quella casa / quell'amicaiqueiquei mesigliquegliquegli amicilequellequelle case Quindi: "mesi" vuole l'articolo "i" → QUEI mesi! La campagna, invece, è la risposta A. Attenzione però: in italiano esiste anche la "campagna elettorale" o "pubblicitaria" — come l'inglese "campaign" —, ma qui Enrico parla proprio di prati, alberi e aria pulita. Livello B1 — "Il Fu Mattia Pascal" di Luigi Pirandello (1904) Ora si fa interessante! Luigi Pirandello, premio Nobel per la letteratura nel 1934, ci racconta la storia di Mattia Pascal, un uomo che… viene creduto morto da tutti! "Il fu", infatti, è un'espressione burocratica che si usa per le persone defunte: "il fu Mattia Pascal" significa "il defunto Mattia Pascal". E lui, invece di correggere l'errore, ne approfitta per cominciare una nuova vita con una nuova identità. «Una delle poche cose, anzi forse la sola ch'io sapessi di certo era questa: che mi chiamavo Mattia Pascal. E me ne approfittavo.» Domande del Livello B1 Grammatica: "mi chiamavo Mattia Pascal": che tipo di verbo è "chiamarsi"? E perché qui è all'imperfetto e non al passato prossimo? Vocabolario: "approfittarsi di qualcosa" significa: A) dimenticare qualcosa B) trarre vantaggio da qualcosa C) avere paura di qualcosa Soluzioni del Livello B1 "Chiamarsi" è un verbo riflessivo.Qui è all'imperfetto, "mi chiamavo", perché non indica un'azione conclusa, ma uno stato che durava nel tempo. Per gli stati e le descrizioni nel passato si usa l'imperfetto; per le azioni concluse, il passato prossimo. Confronta: FraseTempoPerché"Da bambino abitavo a Roma"imperfettoStato / descrizione nel passato"Nel 2010 mi sono trasferito a Milano"passato prossimoAzione conclusa in un momento preciso "Approfittarsi", risposta B, significa trarre vantaggio e si costruisce con la preposizione DI: "approfittarsi DI qualcosa". È proprio per questo che nel testo trovi "me NE approfittavo": quel piccolo NE sostituisce "di questo"… segnatelo, perché al livello C1 il NE tornerà da protagonista! Ultimo bonus per i più curiosi: "ch'io sapessi" è un congiuntivo imperfetto, e "ch'io" è l'elisione di "che io". Livello B2 — "I Malavoglia" di Giovanni Verga (1881) Voliamo in Sicilia con Giovanni Verga e il suo capolavoro del verismo: la storia di una famiglia di pescatori di Aci Trezza. Curiosità deliziosa: il vero cognome della famiglia è Toscano, ma tutti li chiamano "Malavoglia" — che letteralmente significherebbe "poca voglia di lavorare" — anche se in realtà sono dei grandissimi lavoratori! In Sicilia questo soprannome di famiglia, spesso ironico, si chiama "'ngiuria". E "mala voglia" ti ricorda qualcosa? Esatto: proprio come Enrico di Cuore, che andava a scuola "di mala voglia". «Un tempo i Malavoglia erano stati numerosi come i sassi della strada vecchia di Trezza; ce n'erano persino ad Ognina, e ad Aci Castello, tutti buona e brava gente di mare, proprio all'opposto di quel che sembrava dal nomignolo, come dev'essere.» Domande del Livello B2 Grammatica: "proprio all'opposto di QUEL CHE sembrava dal nomignolo". Che cosa significa "quel che"? E con quali altre espressioni possiamo sostituirlo? Vocabolario: che cos'è un "nomignolo"? A) un soprannome B) un documento d'identità C) un piccolo insulto Soluzioni del Livello B2 "Quel che" significa "quello che", cioè "ciò che", "la cosa che". Si chiama pronome relativo doppio, perché unisce due elementi in una sola espressione: un dimostrativo (quello) + il relativo (che). Puoi consultare la guida completa sui pronomi relativi per approfondire. Nel testo: "all'opposto di quel che sembrava dal nomignolo" = "il contrario della cosa che il soprannome faceva pensare". Altri esempi: "Non capisco quello che dici." "Ciò che conta è la salute." E già che ci siamo, due bonus: "erano stati" è un trapassato prossimo, per un'azione anteriore a un altro momento del passato; e "ce n'erano" nasconde la combinazione CI + NE ("lì c'erano alcuni di loro"). Il "nomignolo", risposta A, è un soprannome, spesso affettuoso o scherzoso: viene da "nome" più il suffisso "-ignolo". Livello C1 — "La Coscienza di Zeno" di Italo Svevo (1923) Livello C1: entriamo nella mente di Zeno Cosini, l'uomo dell'"ultima sigaretta". Zeno vuole smettere di fumare e scrive dappertutto la data della sua "ultima sigaretta"… peccato che di "ultime sigarette" ne fumi centinaia. Praticamente il nostro "da lunedì mi metto a dieta". Curiosità incredibile: Italo Svevo è uno pseudonimo — il vero nome era Ettore Schmitz — e il suo insegnante privato d'inglese a Trieste era… James Joyce! Sì, proprio l'autore dell'Ulisse: i due diventarono amici e Joyce aiutò a far conoscere il romanzo in Europa. «Vedere la mia infanzia? Più di dieci lustri me ne separano e i miei occhi presbiti forse potrebbero arrivarci se la luce che ancora ne riverbera non fosse tagliata da ostacoli d'ogni genere, vere alte montagne: i miei anni e qualche mia ora.» Domande del Livello C1 Grammatica: nel brano ci sono due particelle NE: "me NE separano" e "la luce che ancora NE riverbera". Che cosa sostituiscono? Vocabolario: quanti anni sono "dieci lustri"? Soluzioni del Livello C1 Tutte e due le particelle NE sostituiscono la stessa cosa: la mia infanzia! "Più di dieci lustri me NE separano" = "mi separano DA essa" (separare DA qualcosa); "la luce che ancora NE riverbera" = "la luce che ancora riverbera DA essa". Ti ricordi il piccolo NE di Pirandello, "me ne approfittavo", che sostituiva "DI + qualcosa"? Ecco il salto di qualità: il NE può sostituire anche i complementi con DA. Luigi Toscano ist Sohn italienischer Gastarbeiter-Eltern. Seine Kindheit war geprägt von Gewalt und Vernachlässigung, seine Jugend von einem schweren Absturz in die Drogensucht. Erst die Fotografie und die Möglichkeit, Menschen mit seinen Bildern zu berühren, haben seinem Leben eine neue Perspektive gegeben. International bekannt wurde er 2015 mit seinem Gedenkprojekt "Gegen das Vergessen". Überlebende der Shoah fotografierte er und stellte die großformatigen Aufnahmen an öffentlichen Plätzen aus. Heute ist Luigi Toscano als "Artist for Peace" einer der international bekannten Fürsprecher der "Unesco" und ein Mann, der sein Bundesverdienstkreuz aus Protest zurückgegeben hat. Im Gespräch mit Marion Kuchenny erzählt der Fotograf und Filmemacher Luigi Toscano von seinen biografischen Tiefen und einem ungewöhnlichen, mutmachenden Aufstieg.

Pero ¿qué es un griot? Pues alguien muy especial: un narrador, un músico y un guardián de la tradición oral en África Occidental. Un griot es el miembro de una casta de poetas y músicos que transmite la historia de generación en generación. Ofogó nos hablará también de “Una vida de cuento”, publicado por la editorial Kalandraka, donde vierte sus recuerdos de infancia, su reflexión en torno a la cultura de la palabra y la cultura de los sabios en cuya fuente bebió durante su niñez.  Disfrutaremos, además, de la sabiduría atesorada que le ha convertido en un hombre, mediador y sorprendente que, a través de sus cuentos y la tradición oral, lucha contra el proceso de deshumanización en la que estamos inmersos. Der Mannheimer Fotograf und Filmemacher Luigi Toscano hat mit seinem Projekt „Gegen das Vergessen“ weltweit Aufmerksamkeit erregt, für das er mehr als 600 Überlebende des Holocaust porträtiert hat. In seiner neuen Autobiografie „Kanakenkind“, die er gemeinsam mit Silke Kettelhage geschrieben hat, blickt er nun auf seine schwierige Kindheit und seinen ungewöhnlichen Weg zur Fotografie zurück. „Als Kanakenkind bin ich in meiner Kindheit, in meiner Jugend ziemlich oft beschimpft worden“, sagt Toscano über den bewusst provokanten Titel seines Buches. Trotz einer von Armut, Gewalt und Drogen geprägten Jugend fand er über einen Volkshochschulkurs zur Fotografie, die für ihn zum künstlerischen Ausdrucksmittel schlechthin wurde. Heute sagt Toscano über diesen Weg: „Ich war wirklich Tag und Nacht manchmal mit der Kamera unterwegs und habe getan und gemacht und fotografiert und ausprobiert und das war genau richtig!“
