After a bit of a hiatus and a crazy Live Show with the 8th Immortal Andrew 'Joey' Johns, The Ball and All Podcast is back in the shed along with one of the most down to earth and underrated athletes on the WSL tour - Connor O'Leary. Born and raised in Cronulla to parents Akemi, (a Japanese surfing champion before moving to Australia) and Finbar (a local shredder on the Cronulla surf scene) Connor was practically raised in the ocean and taught to surf at the same breaks where Aussie surf legend Mark Occhilupo got his start. Down to earth, humble and with an incredible work ethic - Connor has had to grind and persevere more than most just to earn a shot at the Dream Tour. With this podcast coming at a really pivotal moment just prior to the Australian leg of the WSL Tour, it was great to get a chance to sit down with a bloke in the prime of his career and understand his journey thus far and what makes him tick. Also on the podcast this week, we look back on the takeaways from our epic Live Show with the 8th Immortal Andrew 'Joey' Johns. We go 'Around the Grounds' and get the latest happenings both locally and in the NRL and we pay our respects to a couple of sporting legends who are no longer with us. This week on the Ball and All Podcast we welcome home Ballina Seagulls junior and former Sydney Roosters and Melbourne Storm player James Aubusson. At age 24 and with 58 NRL games to his name (including the unenviable record of being named 18th Man in 2 separate Grand Finals), James decided to take the road less travelled and head back to bush footy. It is from here, the real story begins and you don't want to miss it.Also on the podcast, we look back on an epic day with Mark Mathews and Vaughan Blakey at the Byron Bay Golf Club where 41k was raised for the boys at the Healthy Minds Club. Special thanks to all who bought and donated prizes on the day and to Louis Muller (sound genius) who without his help none of this would have been possible. As always we would like to thank our supporters Bareback Biltong and 44 Constructions as well as welcome aboard two new partners - Lennox Pizza Pasta, (without doubt the best Pizza & Pasta in the Northern Rivers) and the boys supplying the nectar from the gods Gage Roads Brew Co - great to have you onboard fellas. Also if you love your health and fitness or are looking to make a change, keep an eye out for James and Mitch Aubusson's new business venture 'Bodyfit Ballina' which will be opening sometime in the very near future.
This week on the Ball and All podcast we welcome Mark Mathews - big wave surfing legend and one of the most inspiring individuals this big island nation has ever produced. For years Mark has battled his own inner demons, relating to fear and anxiety whilst at the same time, staring down some of the most ferocious waves on the planet - think Jaws, Shipsterns, Cyclops, The Right and pioneering the break affectionately known as Our's. He has also endured and overcome some shocking injuries, which have pushed him to the brink both physically and mentally. The day was a huge success raising awareness for men's mental health and raising 41k for the Healthy Minds Club. A special thank you to all who donated prizes and everyone who aimed up on the day - in particularly Vaughan Blakey and Louis Muller from the Swellian's, who without their help and expertise we could never have pulled this off.And if you're under any illusions as to just how much of a legend Mark is, then get this - he gave up his time, on his B'day in order to support what the Healthy Minds boys are doing and did it all free of charge - flat out we can't thank him enough.
This week on the Ball and All Podcast, we welcome a man who has managed to live more lives than most - Ironman legend Wes Berg. When most of us complain that family life is stressful enough, Wes has somehow managed to fit in a 20 year career at the top of the Ironman game, coached surfing legends such as Joel Parkinson (to his first world title), Andy Irons (to his third world title), and Jack Freestone (2 World Junior titles) as well as a number of other world champions in their chosen professions, combined work as a Fridgy and a number of other business ventures along with being a devoted husband to wife Jade and Dad to their 3 kids, oh and did we mention he overcame a broken neck as well. Wes is a man who has shown incredible resilience to overcome a whole host of personal and professional challenges and has done so with a positive energy best summed up by the legendary Daryl Kerrigan himself - it's just 'the vibe'.
