But through resilience, adaptability, and passion, they've built a flourishing flower farm that continues to grow and evolve. In our conversation, Kathy shares:

While it might seem like medicine is for the well healed, it’s actually a course that creates opportunities for everyone. Rhi Noble, now a Junior Doctor at Lismore Base Hospital, is an extraordinary example of fighting through disadvantage, with purpose, grit, knowing exactly who she is and what she wanted to do with her life. Raised and supported, mainly by her grandmother and the LGBTQIA community of the Northern Rivers, it was this group of people that formed her community, helped her grow and believe in herself.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Yowie Sightings in the 1970s: Media Coverage and Key WitnessesDuring the 1970s, reports of Yowie sightings experienced a resurgence in the Australian media. Such coverage typically required two essential elements: first, a sighting report that caught enough attention to reach a newspaper, and second, a journalist with both an interest in the topic and the desire to write about it.One such journalist was Gary Buchanan from the Northern Star newspaper, serving the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. Buchanan documented several notable Yowie encounters, including one of the most famous incidents of that era. While he covered an early sighting from 1935 in South Lismore, it was two reports from Woodenbong during the 1970s that captured national attention.Thelma Crewe's EncounterIn 1976, Mrs. Thelma Crewe found herself unable to sleep and stood by her kitchen window at 1 a.m. Although there had been reports in previous weeks of two Yowies roaming near her home, this was not on her mind at the time. As she looked out on the moonlit scene, she observed two Yowies, each about five feet tall, standing in a vacant lot beside her house. She insisted there could be no mistake, as the area was well-lit and the figures were close enough to distinguish clearly. The creatures' heads appeared to sink into their shoulders, and they moved bipedally. Their arm hair was notably long—about six inches—longer than the hair elsewhere on their bodies, which reminded her of an orangutan. She also noted their resemblance to the description given by George Grey, who was reportedly attacked by a small Yowie in 1965, west of Kempsey. Thelma provided AYR with sketches of the creatures she saw.Jean Maloney's SightingLess than a year later, another sighting took place on Lindsay Street, just a few streets away. Jean Maloney was awakened at 2:30 a.m. by the distressed yelping of her Australian Terrier in the backyard. Yowie encounters seldom end well for dogs; many animals react with fear, and those that confront the creatures often return with serious injuries or go missing altogether. In this case, the dog died from its injuries.Like many earlier witnesses, Jean has since passed away. Fortunately, her experience was documented and not lost to history.Witness TestimonyThe account of Jean's encounter was later recorded during an interview with Paul Cropper. Send us a textIn this episode, we speak with Linda Sparrow - long-time Bangalow local, former media buyer, and the passionate force behind Bangalow Koalas. Linda grew up in the Blue Mountains before building a life in Sydney's Northern Beaches, eventually settling in Bangalow over two decades ago with her mum.She shares reflections on the sense of belonging she found in the Northern Rivers, the value of community when starting fresh, and how her career in media led her to something entirely different. That ‘something' is now one of the most impactful conservation initiatives in the region. As President of Bangalow Koalas, Linda talks about how a small group of neighbours grew into a powerful not-for-profit determined to protect the area's unique koala population. She explains their ambitious goal to plant 500,000 trees, the types of plants they're focusing on, and why this gene pool of koalas might be key to the species' survival.Linda's journey is a reminder that passion and persistence can build something bigger than ourselves. In her words, if you want to make a difference - start local.Learn more at: https://www.bangalowkoalas.com.au/ If you'd like to share your story or provide feedback, please contact us via email at chrishanley@byronbayfn.com
Climate change has led the Northern Rivers has been inundated by flood and flood threats, but it has also shown Australia - and the world - what it looks like to lead a community response to climate change. In this episode we talk with Rebecca McNaught, a community researcher on disaster response who shares with us how the community did respond to the extreme floods in 2022, and what all communities can learn from what they did.Bec has decades of experience in community-led climate work, having worked across the Pacific and the world before focusing on researching best practice in community strategies. She was undertaking field work when the 2022 floods began, and she helped lead emergency support with others in her neighbourhood before she finished her PhD documenting best practice. In this conversation she argues that big concepts like "climate change adaptation" and creating climate infrastructure are at their heart about building strong social bonds between people who can be there for each other when dialling 000 no longer works. For more on the Northern Rivers Community Resilience Alliance see here. For information on the University of Sydney's University Centre for Rural Health see here. For more on ChangeMakers check us out:Via our Website - https://changemakerspodcast.org (where you can also sign up to our email list!)On Facebook, Instagram, Threads - https://www.facebook.com/ChangeMakersPodcast/Blue Sky Social - changemakerspod.bsky.aocial & amandatattersall.bsky.socialOn X/Twitter - @changemakers99 or @amandatattsOn LinkedIn - Amanda.Tattersall Hosted on Acast. Send us a textIn this episode, we speak with Steve Snow - celebrated seafood chef, founder of the iconic Fins Restaurant, and lifelong lover of food, family, and the ocean. Born on the Gold Coast and raised in Cronulla, Steve's path didn't start in the kitchen. He began with business and law, but quickly realised the corporate life wasn't for him. What followed was a leap into a world where he could surf by day and cook by night.Steve shares stories of learning to cook with his mum, working on boats in France, and why his love for fish - especially locally caught - has never wavered. He reflects on opening the original Fins in Brunswick Heads in the early 90s, how he brought global flavours to the Northern Rivers, and what still drives him today. From TV appearances and best-selling cookbooks to decades of restaurant success, Steve's journey is a reminder that doing what you love really can shape a life. As he puts it, cooking is about passion - and doing it with love.If you'd like to share your story or provide feedback, please contact us via email at chrishanley@byronbayfn.com
Hello and welcome to the Monday Breakfast show for Monday the 14th of July 2025. On today's show: Headlines: French parliament recognises 'New Caledonia' as its own state despite Indigenous Kanak resistance. NDIA admits to removing participant from scheme following participant's alleged criticism of scheme on social media Last Monday members of the Allan government met with what's called the 'anti-hate task force' in response to a number of events around so-called Melbourne, including an attack on a synagogue and continued protest against genocide in Palestine and ties to Israel. Both the Allan government and multiple media outlets such as The Age, the Herald Sun and the ABC were quick to conflate these events as anti-Semitic in yet another attempt to stifle criticism of Israel, the Victorian government, and other entities which have partnered with the Zionist settler-colony. The Monday Breakfast show was joined by Ohad Kozminsky, executive member of the Jewish Council of Australia, an independent Jewish voice supporting human rights and opposing antisemitism and racism, to speak about the task force and the false conflation of anti-genocide protest with anti-Semitism. Edmi spoke with Ian Hamm about the Yoorrook Justice Commission report and its findings, the responsibilities of First Nations people and settlers alike in pushing for First Nations sovereignty and land back, as well as using a framework of looking to the future when taking part in the struggle. Ian is a Yorta Yorta man who has been actively involved in the Victorian Indigenous community in a personal and professional capacity for over 30 years. He has had a wide exposure to, and led, policy reform and program implementation for both the State and Federal Governments at executive level, mostly notably in Aboriginal Affairs. Since 2000, Ian has been a board member of a range of NFP's, including a number as Chair. He has led some of these organisations through change and adaption to ensure they are well placed for the challenges of improving the lives of people in a rapid changing environment. Ian is Chairperson of the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation, First Nations Foundation, and President of the Community Broadcasting Foundation up until a couple of weeks. He is also a Board Director on The Healing Foundation, Yarra Valley Water, and Aboriginal Housing Victoria. Ian is also a sessional panel member on the Australian Financial Complaints Authority and Planning Panels Victoria. We play a segment from the Earth Matters show, providing Sasha Mainbridge's perspective on what she's learnt from life after a flood and the need to build back better after extreme weather events. Sasha is a resident of Mullumbimby, in the flood-prone Northern Rivers region of NSW, She is the founder and president of Mullum Cares, a non-profit organisation that focuses on resource conservation. Listen to the full episode and more from the Earth Matters crew at 3CR.org.au/earthmatters or listen live on Sunday from 11 to 11:30AM. The show ends with a conversation between Edmi and Emily, one of the editors from Dissolution Magazine, a local radical print publication. (Dis)solution creates and publishes work to unravel the knots of injustice in the post-end-of-history Anthropocene. It turns a critical eye to the machinations of exploitation at the intersections of politic, culture, and ecology, and the crisis and contradiction that follows. (Dis)solution believes in work that analyzes our world without insularity, work that informs our everyday-political movement through the eroding topographies of the 21st century—not merely to understand it, but to change it. We are living on a compromised planet. Alongside acting to slow the pace of change, we have to adapt; and prepare for increasingly challenging conditions. Communities everywhere are already doing this, often independent of - and in spite of - the actions of their governments. On this show, and next month, I share some examples of community-led climate adaptation on this continent. You'll hear how individuals and organisations are working to build resilience, respond collectively to climate impacts, and prepare for escalating disaster. Amanda Kelly is the CEO of Women's Health Goulburn North East, a feminist organisation based in North-east Victoria which co-produced a research report on disaster resilience called ‘Care Through Disaster'. Sasha Mainbridge is a resident of Mullumbimby, in the flood-prone Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. She is the founder and president of Mullum Cares, a non-profit organisation that focuses on resource conservation. Catherine Strong is an associate professor in the RMIT University's Music Industry program. She researches extensively on industry work conditions, gender in music and the impacts of the climate emergency. The Climate Adaptation Fair took place at Borderlands Cooperative in Footscray, Narrm (melbourne), as part of the National Sustainability Festival. It was organised by Friends of the Earth's Act on Climate collective.Earth Matters #1509 was produced by Mia Audrey.

She continues to try to always be a proponent for traditional practices of Naturopathy and to be guided by the light of nature. Amber lives in the Northern Rivers of NSW with her husband, where she runs her small business known as From The Eartha.During this episode, Amber shares how an upbringing steeped in the philosophy of nature connection alongside a childhood living on the wild islands off the coast of Western Australia heavily influenced her belief systems and the way that she practices and connects with herbal medicine today. We also dive into pregnancy updates, gender dreaming, soul baby connections, and the messier bits too—like intrusive thoughts and the anxiety that can follow pregnancy loss. Moose finds a productive way to use his electric car and goose went and surfed snapper, it's all happening on this weeks epwe hope all you legends are ok and please reach out if your not Hosted on Acast. Today I'm in conversation with Heike Hamann. Heike was born in Tanzania, East Africa to German parents, and lived in England, Papua New Guinea and Germany before moving to Australia as a teenager. She is currently the custodian of a beautiful property in Tyagarah, in the Northern Rivers, surrounded by nature and close to the ocean. Heike has been sailing, running, bushwalking and paragliding to name but a few of her sporting activities, and has represented Australia as a runner and paragliding pilot. She graduated from the Process Work Institute in Portland Oregon with two Process Oriented Psychology Masters, and works in private practice as a psychotherapist. She is constantly astounded and amazed by the magic and deep transformation that happens when people's processes are lovingly and attentively followed, and the depth of wisdom that each of us has, is accessed. Connection is important to Heike. Connection to the Divine, to Herself and herself, to Nature, to her partner, friends and family and to community. These days she loves having spaciousness in her life, which facilitates this connection. She loves sailing with hump back whales – so much so that she bought herself a boat late last year and has been living and sailing on it along the east coast of Australia and Tasmania for the last 12 months. The journey has helped her grow more and more into a place of trusting Life, and the feeling of being held and loved unconditionally (by Below and Above, – aka Mother Earth and the Divine). We talked about three levels of reality; working with pain and body symptoms; the impact of living in many places on the making of a person; belonging; slowing down; loneliness; inner knowing and her very special encounter with whales. Andy Dozier, a team member of Orbis Ministries (Ken Fish) spoke recently at the Northern Rivers school of the prophetic. He presented a phenomenal message that gave a wonderful introduction to the ministry of inner healing. He opened by talking about the fragility of the human soul, and how we were never designed to be exposed to so much trauma and rejection. He went on to explain how God brings healing to reverse all of the choices we have made in our negative responses to the trauma and the pain of life on planet earth. This is a tremendous message and we would encourage everyone to give it a listen Andy was a tremendous blessing at the school of the prophetic. We hope you enjoy this message and that you are also blessed. Andy's biggest point was that a heart that is healing is a heart that is hearing everything God is saying.

You may recall the name ‘Esther Rockett' from episode 2, season 3 of this podcast, which was all about Universal Medicine – Serge Benhayon's esoteric healing cult in the Northern Rivers region of NSW. Esther has been blogging about the more alarming elements of Serge's ‘modalities' since 2012, and he sued her for defamation in 2015. The case went to trial in 2018, and in an incredible David and Goliath tale, Esther's defence proved that the bulk of the defamatory claims found to have been conveyed in her writings were true. John Seed is a 78-year-old world-renowned Australian environmental educator, author, activist, artist and filmmaker. A recipient of the Australian government's Order of Australia medal, John is the founder and director of the Rainforest Information Centre and, since 1979, has been involved in 100s of campaigns and education initiatives that have protected remaining rainforests and helped humanity rethink our relationship with nature. John and his family first came to Australia as Jewish refugees who experienced incredible hardship and devastating loss during the Nazi occupation of Hungary. They went on to create a new life in Australia, where John's mother, Judy Cassab, went on to become one of Australia's most celebrated painters. John also has an artistic flair, and he and his mother had an exhibition together during the final years of Judy's life. John has had a fascinating and adventurous path in life. After a short career in computing with IBM, John joined the hippy trail, travelling overland through Afghanistan and onto India, where he studied meditation before arriving back in Australia and co-founding an intentional community in Bundjalung Country, and the Northern Rivers ‘rainbow region' of Northern NSW at Bodhi farm, which still exists to this day. It was here that John found his true calling, or it found him. As you're about to hear, at the time, outside of Indigenous culture, there was little respect or appreciation for the value of rainforests, and they were being destroyed at an alarming rate. John joined locals in blockading the site at Terania Creek and said the experience at the time was as if nature was speaking to him. The protesters succeeded, and John went on to found the Rainforest Information Centre, a pioneering global organisation that has been instrumental in rainforest protection and conversation throughout Latin America, Cambodia, India, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and the South Pacific. His work also helped initiate the creation of the US Rainforest Action Network.John has written and lectured extensively on the concept of deep ecology. With Joanna Macy, Pat Fleming and Professor Arne Naess, he wrote "Thinking Like a Mountain - Towards a Council of All Beings" which has been translated into 12 languages including Korean and Tibetan. In 1987 he co-produced a television documentary, "EARTH FIRST!" for Australian national television about the struggle for the rainforests. In 2003 he spearheaded RIC's endangered species campaign and made the film "On The Brink" with David Attenborough, David Suzuki, Olivia Newton-John and Jack Thompson. You can find that via the Rainforest Information Centre online, as well as lots of other great videos, including one of John in conversation with Ram Dass in 1992.In 2021 – after an arduous and prolonged struggle with life-threatening cancer, John got back in the saddle and jumped straight into action. Some of his campaigning at this time helped lead to Ecuador's Constitutional Court ruling that mining in the Los Cedros Protected Forest is a violation of the constitutional rights of nature and is therefore prohibited in the forest. This has created an important national and worldwide precedent.More recently, John was involved in the Rising Tide blockade of coal ships leaving the world's Largest Coal Port in Newcastle, NSW. 3000 protesters gathered, and John was one of over 100 people in Kayaks arrested as part of a collective stand against Australia's continued investment in fossil fuels. I should add that John is also an accomplished songwriter and has produced 5 albums of environmental songs, as well as numerous other environmental films.
