February and March 2022 saw close to 1,000 schools in the Northern Rivers region temporarily close, with some schools unable to return to their original locations. The disaster resulted in damaged infrastructure and educational materials, displaced families and impacted teachers. Southern Cross University researchers have launched the Floods + Me project to work with young people in gathering their experiences during and following the natural disaster and its impact on their schooling. Dr Simone Blom and Dr Liberty de Rivera speak on the SCU Buzz podcast about the research project and their upcoming education framework aimed at helping schools prepare for floods. This ep is a wild ride—think lice. Yep, they're back, they're savage, and they've made themselves right at home on Sarah's head (and on pretty much every child in the Northern Rivers). But these pesky invaders are no match for our girls and their arsenal of potions and lotions. We also dive into pregnancy updates, gender dreaming, soul baby connections, and the messier bits too—like intrusive thoughts and the anxiety that can follow pregnancy loss. It's itchy heads and full hearts this week, and we're here for all of it. Resource links: Lice products Emily the Medium This episode is proudly sponsored by OSEA! Welcome to our short and sharp summer series where we revisit some of your very favourite episodes. We've added an additional little intro, reflecting on our chat with Phil Dudman and general updates since then. We got so many amazing tips from Phil, and we hope you do too. Here's the original episode spiel: Buckle up ya'll, it's the final episode for Season 2 and we're welcoming one of the nicest blokes in gardening to the microphone, Mr Phil Dudman. With a diverse and colourful career that extends from touring with an 80's rock band, to hosting garden tours in Italy, an epiphany when Phil was 27 sent him down the literal and metaphorical garden path and he hasn't looked back since. Phil is a trained horticulturalist, gardening talkback host on ABC Local Radio, the horticultural editor at Organic Gardener Magazine, has written books and is a familiar face on TV, Youtube and social media. Phil runs workshops and courses both online and from his own backyard, and you can explore what's on offer at www.growyourfood.com.au. Phil lives and gardens on the land of the Widjabul-Wai-bal people of the Bundjalung Nation in the Northern Rivers region of NSW. We chat to Phil about pests, garden design, attracting birdlife to your backyard and weeding with wine at 10am. Before we get into it though, Emily and Maddie are drinking a Jauma grenache. We're talking about online marketplace purchases and tip shop wins. We're using Google Images to sort out our plant ID issues. We're sluggish with the garlic, and Maddie is barely keeping the lights on with her garden. Emily's finally sorted the pesky carport out, and her 7 year old daughter is winning at gardening this month. Follow Phil on Instagram here, check out his YouTube here and his website here
Conversations is bringing you a summer treat — a collection of Richard's most memorable guests through out the years. After a cruel and abusive childhood and an adulthood full of unemployment and homelessness, Gregory Smith decided to step out of society and into the solitary life of a hermit, living in the elements in a forest in Northern NSW. Gregory is an academic in the School of Arts and Social Sciences at Southern Cross University in New South Wales. He recently completed his PhD highlighting the experiences of children raised in institutional care. For much of his adulthood Gregory was homeless; and by his own admission, a 'do not approach' figure. For ten years he lived as a hermit in a forest in northern NSW, catching his own food. After decades of life on the margins, he now has a place of his own, and is a popular teacher.Gregory's childhood, in and out of orphanages, boys' homes and youth detention centres, made getting a foothold in regular society a massive challenge. This episode of Conversations contains discussions about child abuse, orphanages, boys homes, child psychology, sociopaths, homelessness, unemployment, hermit, solitude, forests, rainforest, New South Wales, NSW, recluse, sociology, university, relationships, memoirs, autobiographies, Southern Cross Univerity, PHD, Order of Australia.

Today I'm in conversation with Heike Hamann. Heike was born in Tanzania, East Africa to German parents, and lived in England, Papua New Guinea and Germany before moving to Australia as a teenager. She is currently the custodian of a beautiful property in Tyagarah, in the Northern Rivers, surrounded by nature and close to the ocean. Heike has been sailing, running, bushwalking and paragliding to name but a few of her sporting activities, and has represented Australia as a runner and paragliding pilot. She graduated from the Process Work Institute in Portland Oregon with two Process Oriented Psychology Masters, and works in private practice as a psychotherapist. She is constantly astounded and amazed by the magic and deep transformation that happens when people's processes are lovingly and attentively followed, and the depth of wisdom that each of us has, is accessed. Connection is important to Heike. Connection to the Divine, to Herself and herself, to Nature, to her partner, friends and family and to community. These days she loves having spaciousness in her life, which facilitates this connection. She loves sailing with hump back whales – so much so that she bought herself a boat late last year and has been living and sailing on it along the east coast of Australia and Tasmania for the last 12 months. The journey has helped her grow more and more into a place of trusting Life, and the feeling of being held and loved unconditionally (by Below and Above, – aka Mother Earth and the Divine). We talked about three levels of reality; working with pain and body symptoms; the impact of living in many places on the making of a person; belonging; slowing down; loneliness; inner knowing and her very special encounter with whales. What does it mean to be a sustainable business or to brew in a sustainable manner? Can beer really do good, or are such claims just there to make marketing departments feel better about themselves? And, if so, how can they have a positive impact on the world around them, from their local community to the drinkers who buy their beers?Such questions – and helping people find the right answers to them – have occupied James Perrin throughout his career in beer. It's one that started with Lion in New Zealand, brought him to Stone & Wood in the midst of their rapid growth, and continues to this day in many ways. He's still involved in a Northern Rivers brewery too, albeit a rather smaller one. He left Stone & Wood after the sale to Lion / Kirin, and these days is part of the team running Spangled Drongo, a brewery which makes a donation from every beer sold to help protect the natural habitat around them.He also works with businesses looking to be better global citizens in and outside beer, both in Australia and overseas, and has helped some – most recently Jervis Bay Brewing Co – gain B Corp status.James is a wealth of knowledge on all things sustainability and has developed a model of six ways in which businesses can look to have a positive impact. He joined us on the show to explain his approach, discuss various programs and certifications in this space, and to highlight examples from the beer world that have impressed him.He talks passionately about the importance of authenticity in making connections with consumers, and is a firm believer that indie beer businesses occupy a role within communities through which they can make changes for the better and inspire others to follow suit. The chat with James starts at 16:17Prior to that we welcomed another guest, who joined James for the preamble. With Will making his way back to Australia from Bali, Benedict Kennedy-Cox stepped up to the oche.Benny has been writing for The Crafty Pint for a few years now, often combining beer with another passion of his: travel. He was in Melbourne so dropped into the studio to discuss the week's news, share some of his favourite experiences on the road, including getting abused by a waiter in Köln, and offer insight into the sustainably-minded businesses he's written about for us.There also a heads-up for our forthcoming lager-centric event at The Wheaty.Relevant links:Going Green: Sustainable Brewing: https://craftypint.com/news/1767/going-green-sustainable-brewingSpangled Drongo Brewing: https://craftypint.com/brewery/865/spangled-drongo-brewery Jervis Bay Secure B Corp Status: https://craftypint.com/news/3588/better-every-day-jervis-bay-become-a-b-corp James Perrin's website: https://www.jamesperrin.com.au/ Ryefield Hops' Certifiably Sustainable Growth: https://craftypint.com/news/3376/ryefield-hops-certifiably-sustainable-growth Frogs Hollow's Off-Grid Brewery: https://craftypint.com/news/3590/going-green-frogs-hollows-off-grid-brewery Mitta Mitta Brewing: https://craftypint.com/brewery/398/mitta-mitta-brewing-co Ten Lessons From Ten Years: Wolf of the Willows: https://craftypint.com/news/3614/ten-lessons-from-ten-years-wolf-of-the-willows Planned vs Rogue: https://www.youtube.com/@PlannedvsRogue Upcoming lager event at The Wheaty: https://craftypint.com/event/13508/exploring-the-ever-larger-world-of-lagerSun Tap Decals: https://www.suntapdecals.com.au/ To find out more about supporting the show or otherwise partnering with The Crafty Pint, contact craig@craftypint.com.

Andy Dozier, a team member of Orbis Ministries (Ken Fish) spoke recently at the Northern Rivers school of the prophetic. He presented a phenomenal message that gave a wonderful introduction to the ministry of inner healing. He opened by talking about the fragility of the human soul, and how we were never designed to be exposed to so much trauma and rejection. He went on to explain how God brings healing to reverse all of the choices we have made in our negative responses to the trauma and the pain of life on planet earth. This is a tremendous message and we would encourage everyone to give it a listen Andy was a tremendous blessing at the school of the prophetic. We hope you enjoy this message and that you are also blessed. Andy's biggest point was that a heart that is healing is a heart that is hearing everything God is saying.

Genna Pyewacket is a naturopath and herbalist with a special interest in functional medicine. Training in Canada as a teen under the guidance of a traditional herbalist, she continued her studies formally in Australia studying at Nature Care College in Sydney, where she graduated in 2004 with an Advance Diploma of Naturopathy and a Bachelor of Health Sciences (UNE), followed by an Advance Diploma of Homeopathy in 2011 (Endeavour College). Her naturopathic practice has shifted focus from the clinic to the kitchen over the last six years with her business, Pyewackets Traditional. Her focus there is on fermented fruit and herb preserves known as shrubs, apple cider vinegar tinctures and tonics, as well as bitters. With her drinks, she hopes to help improve the health and nutrition of her customers, as well as their relationship to every day kitchen medicine and plants . She lives in Lismore New South Wales with her family. During our chat, Genna shares how as part of her environmental activism in her early teens, she found herself on a herb walk, immersed in the medicine of the old growth forests. This was such a lightbulb moment that from then on, she was determined to learn more and started studying herbal medicine at only 17 years old, with a local herbal elder- which led to an apprenticeship when she finished school and further learning with renowned herbalist Rosemary Gladstar. Genna shares her journey from Canada to Australia to further her studies in herbal medicine and the evolution of her connection with the plants. She shares her passion for shrubs and their historical significance as a preservation method for fruit and herbs. Being lucky enough to live in the Northern Rivers with an abundance of local produce at her fingertips, Genna paints a picture of her adventures across the countryside picking up surplus citrus, herbs hanging out the windows of her little car… We chat about what's growing in Genna's garden and she shares a little known use for that common sub-tropical fruit tree, the paw paw…(hint, it's not the fruit!) Genna shares some of the ways women can tune into their self care needs by observing changes to their cycle and we agree that this can be a really tangible way to see the impact of self care practices. Entering the season of peri-menopause has shifted her nervous system in different ways and Genna shares a herb that she has found to be a wonderful ally at this time… We talk about different constitutional types and how having an awareness of our own constitution can influence the how, when and why of our self care. Genna describes what she sees as the two most important ingredients for seeing the long term benefits of self care by telling a beautiful story about the lasting impact of the waves or moving water on a stone or rock… We finish our chat with a gorgeous image of Genna in the lavender fields of the south of France with the fragrance of one of her favourite herbs wafting over her… **CONNECT** Pyewackets Traditional https://pyewacketstraditional.com/ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/pyewacketstraditional/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/PyewacketsTraditional/ **THE ELDER TREE TROVE PATREON COMMUNITY** You can join our Patreon here and gain a deeper connection to our podcast. John Seed is a 78-year-old world-renowned Australian environmental educator, author, activist, artist and filmmaker. A recipient of the Australian government's Order of Australia medal, John is the founder and director of the Rainforest Information Centre and, since 1979, has been involved in 100s of campaigns and education initiatives that have protected remaining rainforests and helped humanity rethink our relationship with nature. John and his family first came to Australia as Jewish refugees who experienced incredible hardship and devastating loss during the Nazi occupation of Hungary. They went on to create a new life in Australia, where John's mother, Judy Cassab, went on to become one of Australia's most celebrated painters. John also has an artistic flair, and he and his mother had an exhibition together during the final years of Judy's life. John has had a fascinating and adventurous path in life. After a short career in computing with IBM, John joined the hippy trail, travelling overland through Afghanistan and onto India, where he studied meditation before arriving back in Australia and co-founding an intentional community in Bundjalung Country, and the Northern Rivers ‘rainbow region' of Northern NSW at Bodhi farm, which still exists to this day. It was here that John found his true calling, or it found him. As you're about to hear, at the time, outside of Indigenous culture, there was little respect or appreciation for the value of rainforests, and they were being destroyed at an alarming rate. John joined locals in blockading the site at Terania Creek and said the experience at the time was as if nature was speaking to him. The protesters succeeded, and John went on to found the Rainforest Information Centre, a pioneering global organisation that has been instrumental in rainforest protection and conversation throughout Latin America, Cambodia, India, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and the South Pacific. His work also helped initiate the creation of the US Rainforest Action Network.John has written and lectured extensively on the concept of deep ecology. With Joanna Macy, Pat Fleming and Professor Arne Naess, he wrote "Thinking Like a Mountain - Towards a Council of All Beings" which has been translated into 12 languages including Korean and Tibetan. In 1987 he co-produced a television documentary, "EARTH FIRST!" for Australian national television about the struggle for the rainforests. In 2003 he spearheaded RIC's endangered species campaign and made the film "On The Brink" with David Attenborough, David Suzuki, Olivia Newton-John and Jack Thompson. You can find that via the Rainforest Information Centre online, as well as lots of other great videos, including one of John in conversation with Ram Dass in 1992.In 2021 – after an arduous and prolonged struggle with life-threatening cancer, John got back in the saddle and jumped straight into action. Some of his campaigning at this time helped lead to Ecuador's Constitutional Court ruling that mining in the Los Cedros Protected Forest is a violation of the constitutional rights of nature and is therefore prohibited in the forest. This has created an important national and worldwide precedent.More recently, John was involved in the Rising Tide blockade of coal ships leaving the world's Largest Coal Port in Newcastle, NSW. 3000 protesters gathered, and John was one of over 100 people in Kayaks arrested as part of a collective stand against Australia's continued investment in fossil fuels. I should add that John is also an accomplished songwriter and has produced 5 albums of environmental songs, as well as numerous other environmental films.

New Orleans and Australia's Northern Rivers are miles apart but share similarities when it comes to natural disasters. This session shines a light on the difficult questions confronting communities as they seek to rebuild more resilient settlements in the wake of devastating natural disasters. Drawing on the experiences of flood urbanist Professor Elizabeth Mossop, and community leader Dan Etheridge, both of whom were at the front line of the New Orleans Hurricane Katrina response and rebuilding process, this special event asks what lessons can be learned from that experience and what planning, design, governance, and financial frameworks are needed to help other communities affected by catastrophic disaster and ongoing climate risk. We're delighted to welcome Myra Lewin of Hale Pule back on the show today to share her insightful dialogue in the realms of Ayurveda, yoga and business with Mason. Myra was first on the show back in February 2020, a moment in time we all look back on now with a pivotal understanding. Back then Myra spoke with Tahnee about the foundational aspects of yoga and Ayurveda and how these tools can be used to create harmony in one's body and life. Today Myra connects with Mason about the importance of "the why" when engaging with a personal or vocational endeavour and how her offerings through Hale Pule have changed since the pandemic when the world went primarily online. Myra speaks to the Ayurvedic approach, of interacting with the body as a self correcting organism, and using herbs and practices to support the body's natural cyclic functions and the inherent intelligence embodied in each of its cells. Originating from a previous life lived through the lens of the scientific medical model, Myra shares how her experiences with Ayurveda shaped her holistic understanding of the body, mind, spirit, and being as a whole, and how the linear workings of her mind are continually cracked open through the practice of Ayurveda and its governing principals. Myra and Mason explore how many of the premier herbs of the Ayurvedic cannon are used in a casual and one dimensional fashion, especially in the contemporary field of health, and how this approach can often mask the core issue rather than resolve it, as traditionally practised via the ancient roots of this highly revered system. Sharing their resonance for embodied health in an explorative, grounded and charming conversation, the pair provide us with deep insight, wisdom and light hearted sentiment as they explore the many similarities that Ayurveda and Taoism share. Take a moment, take a breath and settle in for the sweet journey this episode takes us on. A truly enjoyable listen. P.s Myra will be hosting an incredible 3 day event focusing on Ayurvedic wisdom for anti ageing and longevity in Sydney later this year, click here to view the entire program. PLUS SuperFeast will be partnering with Hale Pule for a special in person offering in the Northern Rivers on 11th November, mark the date in your calendar and stay tuned for more details. Myra & Mason discuss: - The power of "the why" in keeping focus on any endeavour; business, personal or otherwise. - The Ayurvedic approach to health and healing. - How the practice of Ayurveda challenges the linear based thinking present in many Western models of health. - The importance of laughing at yourself, embracing mistakes and honouring the merits of both the ego and the higher self. - How to begin your journey with Ayurveda and view health through the elements and doshas. - Ayurvedic herbalism. Hello, book clubbers! This month, we read the debut novel ‘New Animal' by Australian author Ella Baxter. This book, set initially in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, then later in suburban Tasmania, follows the life of Amelia Aurelia; an embalmer who spends her days in funeral homes, painting the faces of the dead, and nights sleeping with strangers via the dating apps on her phone. More than anything, though, this is a novel of grief - by chapter four Amelia's beloved mother dies by falling down the stairs, and the reader joins the protagonist as she wades through the all-consuming pain of loss. Benjamin Berry or Your Mate Benny as he's fondly known, joins Mason on the podcast today to chat about the medicinal value of functional breath work and cold therapy. Benny came into the global spotlight at the time of the infamous flooding that decimated much of the Northern Rivers landscape in 2022. As a civilian on the ground responding to the needs of his community, Benny's presence began permeating the wider populace via a series of Instagram posts calling for stronger government intervention, many of which received thousands if not millions of views. Throughout the flood relief effort, what Benny did was show us that with persistence, heart and authentic care; people power works. People can only be as powerful as they are adaptable, which leads us to the theme of today's episode; how the practices of breath work and cold exposure can create mental, physical and emotional resilience when applied appropriately. Throughout this conversation, we get a sense of just how potent the effects of these practices can be, especially when an individual is faced with a challenging situation. Benny carries a distinctly reassuring calm and grounded energy, one that is reinforced by the daily lifestyle habits he keeps and shares through his powerful work. Like any health-promoting protocol that rises to fame, there is plenty of misunderstanding and misinformation around the useful application of breath work and cold therapy, so it is a great pleasure to have Benny, one of the leading Australian advocates for these crafts, on the show today to graciously guide us through. Enjoy. Benny & Mason discuss: - The role of community at times of big life transition. - Benny's involvement in the Northern Rivers 2022 flood relief effort. - The importance of using integrity when holding space in breath work ceremony, and how this influences positive outcomes. - The experiences that lead Benny to the work he offers today. - The difference between true ice bathing and cold immersion. Kohta Mitamura joins Mason for a deep dive into the guiding principles of Human Design. Speaking graciously to technology's influence on the rise of individualisation, Kohta shares his insights on how the principles of Human Design can enable individuals to harness their unique genius and apply that knowledge to create communities that transcend the moralistic world views often imposed on them by birth. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of both permaculture farming and Human Design, Kohta explores the correlation between these systems and how their foundational aspects can be utilised to gain self knowledge and create harmony on both an individual and collective level. Ultimately we can understand Human Design as a self regulating open sourced profiling system, founded on a backbone of astrology, the chakra system, Kabbalah and the teachings of the I Ching. Human Design offers a mechanical understanding of the circuitry that all human consciousness is comprised of. Mason and Kohta met on a permaculture farm in the Northern Rivers many moons ago and it is a delight to have them reconnect through this heartfelt and informative conversation today. Kohta and Mason discuss: - The foundational principles of Human Design. - The four profiling types in Human Design. - How to apply Human Design to your life. - Using Human Design to create harmony in relationships. - The relationship between Human Design and Astrology. - Individual and collective destiny through the lens of Human Design. - Materialism and belonging. Who is Kohta Mitamura? Kohta has spent last 15 years living in farming communities in Hawaii, Australia and Japan. With a mystical yet pragmatic inclination, Kohta found the study of Permaculture and Human Design as foundational frameworks for his pursuit of holistic well being. Kohta is a new staff member at Human Design America and is developing educational materials for their creative individuals.
