The Rocky Road

Tony Bates is a professional boxer from Dublin. Unbeaten since his debut in 2011, he last fought in 2018. Nicknamed ‘Irish Psycho', he could just as easily have borrowed the moniker ‘Mi Vida Loca' from the legendary hellraiser Johnny Tapia, because life's been crazy up to this point. Growing up in Clondalkin, he gained a fondness for gambling, alcohol and drugs at an early age – ‘the party life' – and somehow found a way to work his excesses around his burgeoning football and boxing careers. In 2008, with the recession starting to bite back home, he headed Down Under where he was called to the ring. Bates sparred every big name in Australia boxing – from Michael Katsidis to Tim Tszyu, Anthony Mundine to Jeff Horn – and started making waves as one of several Irish up-and-comers on the pro scene. But outside the gym, his addictions were always in his ear, coaxing him towards trouble. Gambling was the big one as his life started to spiral out of control. Eventually, Bates was locked up, deemed a violent offender and stuck in a maximum security facility. After serving his sentence, he was due to be deported back to Ireland but then Covid hit and the Aussies decided to dump him on Christmas Island, an external territory mainly used as a refugee and immigration detention centre. Hundreds of miles from the mainland, with no set date for release, no wifi and no visitors, the detainees rioted - with Bates witnessing it all unfold. He contacted The Rocky Road to tell of his plight, trying to find a way out, and believes that going to the media – and informing the authorities – helped him find his way home. And now he's back in Ireland, back in boxing and looking to get back in a professional ring at the age of 35. He's survived shootings (of the tasering variety), stabbings (giving as good as he got) and hundreds of street fights, but is now living a peaceful life of prayer (he is a devout Muslim) and preparation (under the watchful eye of new coach Phil Sutcliffe). It's an unbelievable story and this is the first time he's told it. In Part 2, Tony discusses more about his sparring stories - including movearounds with the likes of Jorge Linares - descending into a life of petty crime, his time behind bars, being knifed and getting his revenge, the code he lives by, Christmas Island riots and plans for the future. There's no doubt that Danny Green is a legend of Australian sport. He's the only Australian boxer to win FOUR world titles across three different weight divisions, and he's also represented his country at Commonwealth and Olympic games level. But that's just the start! Danny is highly respected in the community for his philanthropy and his passion for supporting people from all walks of life. Since 2012 Danny has dedicated himself to (and self-funded) his anti-violence movement, the Coward Punch campaign, and has successfully prevented countless senseless and unnecessary attacks on helpless victims. Since Danny started using the term Coward Punch, it has rapidly replaced ‘one-punch' and ‘king hit' in the Australian vernacular used to describe these often deadly attacks, and it's even now used in the courtroom. This conversation is full of laughter as we get some amazing insight in to Danny's friendship with Anthony Mundine, his parenting style and the times in his life that he's been the most terrified (spoiler alert: that story is hands-down the funniest part of the episode)! He fought some of the world's best, across all corners of the globe waging wars against the likes of Anthony Mundine, Arthur Abraham, Sam Soliman, and John Wayne Parr. He's thrown his hat into the entertainment ring, appearing on shows like The Contender, East West, Mr Inbetween, The Ropes, Heartbreak High, and Underbelly. We talk about growing up in the diverse and once working-class suburb of Marrickville, where he was bullied as a child and became an angry, out-of-control teenager; who turned his life around by taking his passion for fighting off the street and into the ring at Newtown Police boys club. There he met trainer and fellow Marrickville legend, world champion boxer Jeff Fenech. He talks about his boxing career, shares the details of his toughest fight, and the drive that gave him the ability to push through serious injuries and never take a backward step, earning him the ring name 'Lionheart'.We discuss what happens behind the scenes of a fight promotion, the rules of trash talk, and how he caught the attention of some of the world's best once he started embracing the bad-boy persona. And we jam on the merit of 'entertainment' or 'exhibition' fights in the boxing world where YouTubers like Jake Paul or ex-footballers like Paul Gallen and Sonny Bill Williams fight legitimate boxers or MMA stars like Mark Hunt.Nader talks about his son Hassan Hamdan, a potential boxing champion in his own right, who is following in his dad's footsteps, being coached by Jeff Fenech and making waves on the boxing scene. And he talks about the principles of discipline, respect, and self-belief, being crucial to establishing his successful career in boxing, and have become the driving force behind his mission to help bring direction to troubled youth and help others turn their lives around. This was a cracking episode, Nader is a beautiful soul and a great friend, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Netball Australia has signed a $15 million sponsorship deal with Visit Victoria just over a week after Hancock Prospecting pulled its contract with the sport. Under the deal, which will run from 2023 to 2027, the Australian Diamonds will wear Visit Victoria branding on the uniform and players and coaches will appear in tourism campaigns to promote Victoria as a travel destination. Victoria will effectively become the home of the Diamonds and will host at least one international Test match for the next five years. The Diamonds will also hold their high performance training camps in the state. On top of that, the new deal means the 2023 Super Netball Grand Final will be held in Victoria. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said he was “thrilled” to announce the deal, declaring it a major “coup” for the state. “This is just a really fantastic day for us to be able to secure this sponsorship deal,” he said. “Victoria is a proud sporting state, and we are delighted to announce a new partnership with Visit Victoria. The partnership will guarantee Victorians the opportunity to experience more netball across the next four and a half years,” Netball Australia CEO Kelly Ryan said. Diamonds captain Liz Watson added: “This is a significant partnership for the Origin Australian Diamonds as we prepare to defend our Commonwealth Games gold medal in Victoria in 2026. “Visit Victoria is a proud supporter of netball, and this investment will benefit all levels of our game.” The deal with Visit Victoria, the state's tourism agency, will only enhance Melbourne's status as the so-called sporting capital of the Australia — adding to a calendar already boasting the Australian Open, AFL Grand Final, Melbourne Cup, cricket's Boxing Day Test match and the Formula 1 Grand Prix at Albert Park. The contract with Visit Victoria is a major boost to Netball Australia, which was desperately searching for a new sponsor after Gina Rinehart's Hancock Prospecting pulled its $15 million deal. Now the sport's governing has found a replacement, with Visit Victoria's deal exactly the same amount Hancock Prospecting withdrew. Indigenous player Donnell Wallam had expressed concern about wearing the Hancock Prospecting logo because of comments made by Rinehart's father and Hancock Prospecting founder Lang Hancock. Donnell Wallam of the Australia Diamonds. Photo / Getty In an interview in the 1980s, Hancock proposed parts of the Indigenous community should be sterilised so they would “breed themselves out”. The breakdown of the deal with Hancock sparked heated responses from Australian sporting legends including Andrew Gaze, Anthony Mundine and Dawn Fraser, politicians, as well as media personalities such as Lisa Wilkinson and Tony Armstrong. There had been calls for Australian billionaire companies including software firm Atlassian to intervene but Netball Australia has found an alternative. Netball Australia's other major sponsors including Suncorp, Origin Energy and Nissan have stated they are standing by the Diamonds and will continue their funding of netball in Australia. The sport's governing body is reportedly $7 million in debt due to costs associated with running the Super Netball competition during the pandemic. Just four months ago, in June, Netball Australia was issued a “going concern” notice from auditors after losing a whopping $7.2 million in just two years. The deal with Visit Victoria will go a long way to recouping those losses. On the court, Wallam made a fairytale Diamonds debut last week in the series opener against England, coming off the bench in the last quarter and scored the matchwinning buzzer beat goal in the one-goal victory. The Diamonds took an unassailable 2-0 series lead against the Roses with a dominant 56-48 victory in game two on Sunday night. The result wrapped up a perfect 2022 for the Diamonds — who won the Quad Series in January, the Commonwealth Games gold medal, reclaimed the Constellation Cup from New Zealand and have now dominated the old enemy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Israel Adesanya joins the show for a quick but entertaining conversation. Having taken the combat sports world by storm on his meteoric rise to super-stardom, “Stylebender” has become a popular target for many of MMA’s biggest names. While solely focused on defending his middleweight crown in early summer opposite Paulo Costa, Adesanya is confident in his abilities against Jon Jones and even the likes of heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic. Coupled with dominant performances, Adesanya has also shown an incredible knack for promotion and pushing his individual brand via social media. We’ll discuss what matchups at 185 are most intriguing, the inevitability of a showdown with Jon Jones, and what younger combat athletes can learn from Izzy’s style of promotion and showmanship. John Wayne Parr returns to the show to discuss his return to action following a brief retirement from combat sports. While this interview took place some time ago, it remains one of the best conversations we’ve had with the “Gunslinger.” As is the case with most fighters, the realities of retirement are difficult to cope with and that was certainly the case for the multiple time Muay Thai champ. Having fell into a deep depression following his sensational win over fellow Aussie combat star Anthony Mundine, Parr had become visually irritant with family and friends. That is until John accompanied his daughters boyfriend, Rocky Ogden, to a kickboxing event with ONE Championship. After speaking with Chatri Sityodtong and being offered a contract that could not refuse, the “Gunslinger” decided to return for a few more showdowns against top level talent before finally deciding to hang up his holster. We will discuss all that and much more in this quality conversation with John Wayne Parr. Be sure to subscribe and share!
