To many, The Phantom Menace is the definitive bad movie of its generation and the film that jumpstarted an entire culture of fanboy rage. Decades after it overwhelmingly disappointed audiences, however, some voices have emerged to ask: was The Phantom Menace worthy of all the hate? Weesa gonna find out!
Alec and Nick discuss the politics and poetry of Jar Jar Binks as a fraught, irredeemable, and complicated figuration of online media culture. Christening summer 2022 as a “Weesa In Big Doo Doo Summer,” the duo discuss a “Binksian paradigm” as an imagistic cultural impasse and toxicity meter that encodes a variety of recent contemporary cultural tropes: the re-emergence of everything from caricature and Catholicism to ambiguous political discourse, Nu Metal, rabid fan culture, and aughts humor. The conversation opens up into an examination of the tensions between archetype and stereotype, models of insufficiency and fiction found in the thought of Francois Laruelle, structural racism in America, as well as the development of auto-fiction, AI Image generators, new field recording practices and more as signaling toward a simultaneous ambivalence and obsession toward representation and symbolism in contemporary culture.

Hello there! We bring back special guest Julia Grochowski to talk about two films: Bong Joon-Ho's scathing dark comedy masterpiece about late stage capitalism, Parasite, and George Lucas's Jar Jar Binks vehicle, Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Julia is not only a dyed-in-the-wool cinephile, but she ALSO has a Wookiepedic knowledge of all things Star Wars, so she is the perfect guest to get down to brass tacks about the prequel trilogy and how it is the same movie as the recent historic Oscar winner. And we actually stay on topic for the entire episode! Weesa thinken yousa liken this episode, bombad! Weesa in big doo doo. Thisa week weesa -- Okay nope. Can't even do it. The bit isn't worth it. We kick off a December of prequels with an absolutely poor choice of reviewing Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. Join us for this LOADED episode where we talk about just how much the wizard cops set themselves up for failure against a political scheme that honestly shouldn't be the focus of the movie. This episode has literally everything: defending Jar Jar, debatable parenting skills, the lamentation of character development, and the return of an old galaxy trucking friend: 3-4 Casablancas. Weesa back! Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace is a 1999 American epic space-opera film written and directed by George Lucas and stars Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd, Ian McDiarmid, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Pernilla August, and Frank Oz. It is the first installment in the Star Wars prequel trilogy and begins the "Skywalker saga", though it was the fourth film to be produced chronologically. The Phantom Menace is set 32 years before the original film and follows Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi as they protect Queen Amidala in hopes of securing a peaceful end to an interplanetary trade dispute. Joined by Anakin Skywalker—a young slave with unusually strong natural powers of the Force—they simultaneously contend with the mysterious return of the Sith.
