Geeky Stoics
Ahsoka the Stoic, Ahsoka the Rock

Geeky Stoics

Happy Friday, Geeky Stoics! I hope you all had a positive week. Today I've got a short reflection on Stoicism and emotion, and whether or not the two can co-exist. A popular criticism of the philosophy is that it's “cold” and “harsh”. I strongly disagree and will use Ahsoka from Star Wars as a case study in ‘stoic' as a character trait. First, two questions for you all. * Do you enjoy or make use of the Audio versions of our articles? Or do you listen to the Geeky Stoics podcast? It takes quite a bit of additional effort to produce and is time-consuming. Audio is one of my favorite parts of doing Geeky Stoics, but do you make use of it? * We have a new video up on YouTube that is in many ways the thesis statement of what Geeky Stoics is all about. Have you watched it yet? We'd love to see more readers Subscribe to the YouTube channel and leave comments, reactions, and feedback on the videos. Discussion is a goal of our community, and we'd love to hear from you and get more well-acquainted. Ahsoka the Stoic, Ahsoka the RockAhsoka has to be my favorite of all the recent Star Wars movies and shows. Having been an adolescent when the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series was playing on TV, I've grown up with Ahsoka Tano, the wartime padawan of Anakin Skywalker. I'm not surprised by the mixed response to the live-action show, where actress Rosario Dawson plays a grown-up Ahsoka, but I am a bit surprised by some of the complaints fans have expressed. Here are a few that stuck out: “Ahsoka is too stoic”, “Ahsoka is soulless” and “Ahsoka has no emotion”. In other words, “Ashoka should smile more” or something.'To be like the rock that the waves keep crashing over. It stands unmoved and the raging of the sea falls still around it.' -Marcus AureliusStar Wars fans have seen the other side of Ahsoka Tano when she was a Jedi pupil. Tano was an impulsive, bratty, brash, annoying, overly sensitive, and disrespectful young Jedi. She and Anakin were a perfect fit. Fast forward to the Ahsoka series and she is around 47 years old. Ahsoka has grappled with her choice to leave the Jedi Order, her guilt over its destruction, and the fall of Anakin Skywalker to evil. She watched the Empire rise and fall and Ahsoka even attempted to train Jedi padawans herself, such as Sabine Wren, with little success. Geeky Stoics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Ahsoka has a heaviness about her that is visible to anyone watching the show. At times you wonder, why isn't she blowing her lid right now or reacting in anger to this situation or that? When critics malign Ahsoka's temperament or the acting of Rosario Dawson as being devoid of emotion, what is really being criticized is the character's unwillingness to display what we all know she feels inside. Ahsoka doesn't emote like she used to as a child. Reflection is not repressionStoicism is most commonly criticized for being a cold and callous school of philosophy that encourages the repression of emotion. But it's not true. As writer and contemporary stoic Ryan Holiday put it on The Daily Show with Jordan Klepper, “There's a difference between being angry, and doing something out of anger.” There is an ocean between feeling anger and indignation over the foolishness of another person, and then “hitting Send on the email dressing them down for it.” Ahsoka has learned not to hit Send. I'm reminded of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in The Phantom Menace when he must negotiate with the junk dealer and slave owner, Watto, in order to get their starship repaired so Queen Amidala can be delivered to Naboo. Their mission is of massive consequence to the galaxy, and failure could mean political chaos in the Republic. Watto, not knowing this (and he wouldn't care either way), has the gall to resist Qui-Gon's “Jedi Mind Trick” and reject Republic currency for the spare parts they need. You know Qui-Gonn is furious. But he does not speak, he just observes Watto and forces out a visibly angry “smile” before walking away from the situation. Jinn could easily kill or subdue Watto and take what is needed. Jedi are not without emotion. Neither are the Stoics of our world, past and present.Stoics were awash in emotion. They had romantic relationships, they had children, and they were politicians confronting fear, suspicion, and doubt in their midst. The most enduring of the Stoics, Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, buried nine children in his lifetime. He buried his wife, Faustina. When his beloved tutor died, it is said that Aurelius sobbed uncontrollably. His stepfather, Antoninus, told the younger Marcus, “Neither philosophy nor empire takes away natural feeling.”Feelings are facts of life. It is a rare and dangerous few who walk this earth without them. Stoics fight not against their emotions, but for an understanding of where their emotions are coming from. They sit with their feelings. They search them for meaning. Ahsoka has learned how to do this, and for people accustomed to reactive behavior and emotive expression, it can be very offputting. If you think something is funny, why aren't you LOLing?! If you think something is sad, why aren't you crying or TELLING the world you're crying on social media? That's how those people think. If you live your life trying to meet their standard of emotive expression, you'll be constantly performing emotion in order to make them feel at ease. Don't do this. The Stoic treats emotion like a cloaked visitor who has knocked on their door. They open the door, greet the visitor, and ask them to reveal their identity before coming inside. Anger is often actually Fear, Disgust can stem from Confusion, and Joy sometimes becomes a lingering Sadness. We call that nostalgia or homesickness. When you learn to answer the door in this way, you're doing what the best Jedi do with their emotions. They are not suppressed, they are examined. When you take the time to examine your feelings, you'll be more like what everyday people call ‘stoic' in your character. Steady. Reliable. Patient. Sturdy. May the Force be with you. Best known for her roles as Nina in Black Swan (2010), Evey in V for Vendetta (2005), and Queen Amidala in the Star Wars Prequels, Portman is widely considered one of the most talented actresses working today. Joined once again by Mark Gehrke, we discuss her early rise to stardom, her project choice tied to her Jewish heritage, rave about Gehrke's nerdy expertise around Star Wars, Marvel, and Annihilation, and hear about James's starstruck moment of seeing Portman on the streets of New York.  How does she rank on the Munson Meter? Let's be honest. Allyson isn't exactly on a winning streak when it comes to picking movies to make Mike watch. Will this one be any different?Where The Heart is got lost in the Star Wars hoopla even though it stars Queen Amidala herself Natalie Portman. It's the dramatic tale of a young pregnant lady abandoned at a Wal-Mart by the baby's father. Stuck in the middle of Oklahoma she's challenged with building a life for herself and her child.A character piece set in America's heartland? This definitely seems like a surefire hit for Mike's taste. Oh! Stockard Channing and Keith David are in it too? Salutations my fellow Corellians. Not sure why I'm aligning my origin to Corellia. My name is Luca. Luke was raised on Tatooine. He's technically 1/2 Nubian. That's right Nubian not "Naboolian" like the Wookiepedia says! Here's my evidence. Episode I. Tatooine. Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn is inside Watto's Starcraft Parts Store. He asks him for parts to the hyperdrive of Queen Amidala's ship. Both Qui-Gon and Watto refer to the ship as Nubian. The subtitles on Disney+ confirmed as I'm writing this. Speaking of origins, Han is from Corellia. Han sounds German. AJ took German in high school until German 3 Honors. He would later drop that course for the following reason: "All they spoke was German." I am as disappointed as you. What's not disappointing (segue), was this episode. It can be divided into 3 story-lines. The main part follows our hero Cassian and his stint in prison and how he plans to get out. While I find it somewhat cheap how the writers got him into prison, I think they have something special planned for how they get him out. The 2nd part follows around ISB and how they're trying to uncover as much as possible about this "network" of rebels stealing Imperial tech. Their main goal is finding Axis (Luthen). If they find Andor, they think they'll find this central Axis figure tying everything together. The 3rd storyline continues to follow around Mon Mothma. I find her storyline the weakest. The only think interesting is the writers have linked Vel and Mon Mothma directly. Not only as co-conspirators but, family! I am still intrigued as to how their going to solve the problem with the money. They've enlisted another tertiary character Tay Kolma. Now they've mentioned another character with whom Mon Mothma has nothing but disdain. Most likely a gangster. Someone an Imperial Senator would not want to openly be associated. Hopefully this character is as interesting and vile as Mon Mothma's reaction to his name. Time will tell. Why else would they show how elaborate and cruel the containment of the prisoners is? Since their method of imprisonment cleverly prevents escape. Their escape must be equally clever. We have 3 episodes left for Andor to find a way out. The Imperial Security Bureau is looking for him. The Rebels are looking for him. Who will find him first. What will they do when they find him? These questions are not answered in this episode. As I write this, I ask myself why I didn't bring any of this up during the broadcast. I gave myself 24hrs after 2 back to back viewings of the last episode to gather my thoughts. Here I am. It's been TOO long since we talked about Star Wars so we thought we were ready to finally talk about the oft dreaded prequels! So here we are with The Phantom Menace! From 1999, we remember the world being crazy excited for these movies. Coming off the heels of the Stars Wars Episodes IV-VI re release in 1997, we had high hopes for these but let's just say George Lucas went a little bit overboard with the CGI, leaving many to claim, where was the Star Wars universe we knew and loved? Well with tons of time gone by (23 years, jesus christ!), we've learned this movie ain't half bad! Sure, Jar Jar has got to GO, the plot is sort of a snoooooze (trade federation, blockade, waaaaat?!), and little Annakin is cheeseball city, but we enjoyed ourselves! Ya got crazy siths, evil double red light sabers, and Queen Amidala's crazy do's. What's not to love?

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, BJ, and special guest Rudie Obias (freelancer writer for Mental Floss) discuss Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones. A whiny teenager massacres a village while professing his love to an older woman. The lowest grossing of the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones takes place a handful of years after Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace. Anakin is now a petulant teenager fawning over Queen Amidala. Obi-Wan Kenobi has a beard and more sass than before. Part murder mystery, part love story, and part political quagmire, Attack of the Clones has too much story going on and kind of drags for much of its running time. However, not all is lost. Writer and director George Lucas seems giddy here exploring a cacophony of settings and ideas; if nothing else, the whole enterprise feels less leaden than The Phantom Menace. Christopher Lee as Count Dooku makes a nice pairing with senior baddie Ian McDiarmid as Senator Palpatine. Both actors can bluster their way through even the most banal dialogue. Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and BJ discuss Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace. A young boy is surrendered by his mother to older men with other plans. An infamous entry in what's now dubbed The Skywalker Saga (thanks Disney!), Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace was George Lucas' first return to the director's chair in over two decades and it shows. While we get some pretty solid world building, we also get maybe 15% of the prequel trilogy's story stretched to over two hours. Overall, the acting is not the problem here. Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson make for a nice pair of reserved Jedi knights, Natalie Portman brings posh notes to Queen Amidala, and Ray Park gives Darth Maul a fierce physicality. John Williams pulls off one of his better late period scores that ranges from subtle nuance (Anakin's theme is an inverted arrangement of the Imperial March) to disturbing bombast (Duel of the Fates is one powerful slice of music no matter how you slice it). A journalist whose career included a lengthy stint at the New York Daily News, along with writing for NBC News now, he tells us how he got into writing comics, what it was like crafting not just the Galaxy's Edge five-issue mini-series, but the upcoming Halcyon Legacy five-issue mini with artist Will Sliney.
