The Meaning of Christian Security - D. Shelby Corlett

In this episode, we present a special audio adaptation of a theological classic: “The Meaning of Christian Security”, written in 1939 by David Shelby Corlett. A respected theologian, editor, and educator in the Church of the Nazarene, Dr. Corlett was known for his clarity, depth, and passionate commitment to scriptural holiness and sanctification. This work is a rich and thoughtful exploration of what it truly means to be secure in Christ—not as a passive guarantee, but as a dynamic, ongoing relationship rooted in faith, obedience, and divine grace. Drawing deeply from Scripture and the Wesleyan-Arminian tradition, Corlett offers a vision of salvation that is both hopeful and profoundly responsible. The essay is organized into five chapters, each unpacking a vital dimension of Christian security: Security: A Divine Provision What Is Eternal Life? Security: A Vital Relationship Security Through Co-operation Its Scope Whether you're a pastor, a student of theology, or simply someone longing to walk more closely with Christ, this timeless message offers clarity, encouragement, and challenge.   This document was accessed from the Wesley Center Online.  The Wesley Center Online is a collection of historical and scholarly resources about the Wesleyan Tradition, theology, Christianity, and the Nazarene church hosted by the Wesley Center for Applied Theology at Northwest Nazarene University. In this episode of "The 167 Podcast," Lead Pastor Shannon Patterson and Media Pastor Joshua Harrell delve into one of the most profound theological questions: Has God already decided who will follow Him, or do we have a say in the matter? Do we choose God, or does He choose us? Does He preselect those who will spend eternity in heaven or hell? Join us as we explore these questions from a Wesleyan-Arminian perspective, emphasizing free will and God's grace. We'll delve into the concept of Prevenient Grace—the grace that goes before us, inviting us onto the porch of faith. Justifying Grace welcomes us through the door, and Sanctifying Grace transforms us within. Discover how Wesleyan-Arminians view human depravity, our inherent inability to do good or repent without divine aid, and the role of Prevenient Grace in drawing us to God. We'll discuss the biblical basis for these beliefs and how they shape our understanding of salvation. Tune in to gain deeper insights into the interplay between divine grace and human free will. In March Remonstrance turns five! The first “minisode” of Remonstrance dropped on March 3, 2016, and we have been working to promote Wesleyan-Arminian Reformation ever since. A lot has changed in the last five years. Ben and I planted a church in Shelton, Connecticut, and we have both become fathers. Remonstrance has teamed up with the Fundamental Wesleyan Society and I graduated from Wesley Seminary. The theological podcast landscape has also changed significantly since 2016, although Calvinist voices still dominate. All of these factors have prompted the necessity to revamp Remonstrance beginning the week of our fifth birthday. The first week of March 2021. Remonstrance is not going anywhere but we will be changing our programming. Moving forward, the podcast will consist of five types of episode formats: Interviews: There will be a lot of interviews with Wesleyan and Arminian scholars, historians, seminary professors, and theologians on the show. Stay tuned for some interesting interviews! Some of them will be returning from past episodes and others will be new to the podcast.  Book and Article Reflections: I will be dropping minisodes or even full episodes where I reflect on theology books I am reading or I have read. I will also interact with and respond to current theology articles relative to Wesleyan-Arminianism. Historical Episodes: I will be dropping some episodes (or minisodes) where I will explore significant historical events from the history of the Wesleyan-Arminian tradition.  Doctrinal Dialogues: True to our “pre-revamp” selves Ben and I will discuss topics together related to Wesleyan-Arminian theology or practice. Debates: Remonstrance will also be hosting debates from within the Wesleyan-Arminian tradition. These will not be your classic “Calvinist vs. Arminian” debates (yawn) but rather “in-house” debates only!  Essentially, each month will be something different. Remonstrance will remain committed to delivering fresh and theologically substantial content every month. We will also continue our partnerships with the Society of Evangelical Arminians and the Fundamental Wesleyan Society.  I hope you will join Remonstrance Podcast for the next five years of Wesleyan-Arminian Reformation. I am looking forward to seeing what God will do.  Soli Deo Gloria.  -Vin @ Remonstrance

In Episode 80 of this podcast, Evan Minton gave a syllogistic argument that God loves all people and that Jesus died for all people called "The Maximally Great Argument Against Calvinism". The argument was philosophical in nature, and yet each of the premises could be backed by scripture as well. However, there are also explicit passages in scripture that state that Jesus died for all. So one can go the roundabout way through Perfect Being Theology or just read The Bible. In this episode, Mr. Minton makes the biblical case for unlimited atonement; the view that Jesus died to atone for the sins of all people. The atonement is unlimited provisionally and limited in application. This is contrary to what Calvinists teach; that Jesus only died for the sins of the elect (i.e individuals God chose to unconditionally elect from eternity past). He examines many coherence objections Calvinists make such as that Arminian soteriology makes God a failure, that unlimited atonement entails universalism, and he takes on The Double Jeopardy Argument. He also takes head on passages Calvinists try to use to positively prove that Jesus only died for the sins of the elect. Listen to this episode and you will see that The Bible is not on the Calvinist's side when it comes to the extent of the atonement. Wesley in strong terms emphasizes the divine activity of God in saving sinners. Wesley is clear that faith is a gift of God and that God works faith in men's hearts. In working faith into men's hearts, God (in Wesley's words) shows that He is "mighty to save." Please read or listen to the rest of this sermon by following the links below. Also, don't miss the next full episode of Remonstrance that will be devoted to the Wesleyan-Arminian doctrine of faith and will focus on how faith is a gift of God.  Links: Text Version http://wesley.nnu.edu/john-wesley/the-sermons-of-john-wesley-1872-edition/sermon-1-salvation-by-faith/ YouTube Version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oObNm8ZCiDI

This minisode is the second in a three podcast series where we will be asking the question, "what is the will of God?" from a Wesleyan-Arminian perspective. In this episode we read a selection from Public Disputation IV by Jacob Arminius. We will only focus on Section 2, "On the Will of God." We will read a brief excerpt from the Disputation and then have some brief theological commentary on it. This is not an easy Disputation, but it is really good! Maybe listen through this more than once.  Here is a link to the full Disputation IV if you are interested: http://wesley.nnu.edu/arminianism/the-works-of-james-arminius/volume-1/public-disputations/disputation-4-on-the-nature-of-god/ Scroll down to the Second Section: ON THE WILL OF GOD

This minisode is the first in a three podcast series where we will be asking the question, "what is the will of God?" from a Wesleyan-Arminian perspective. In this episode we will read two private disputations of Jacob Arminius. The first is Private Disputation 18, "On The Will of God." The second is Private Disputation 19, "On the Various Distinctions of the Will of God." Each reading will be followed by a brief theological commentary. These disputations are tough so get ready for some serious scholastic theology! For your reference here are links to both Disputations. In this minisode we will begin exploring what Arminius taught on the Doctrine of the Atonement. It is clear that Arminius did not hold to the Governmental Theory of the Atonement but to (at least) the Satisfaction Theory instead. This episode will show this from the works of Jacob Arminius "Oration IV." We will also receive theological guidance from Dr. Roger Olson and his excellent book, "Arminian Theology Myths and Realities." Be on the look out for our next full episode that will be entirely devoted to the Wesleyan-Arminian view of the Atonement. Please subscribe! We are Wesleyan-Arminian in our theology. At least, that's what we proclaim. But, what do we really believe about "free will"?
