"The opening day of the Tenth General Assembly of the Church of the Nazarene, June 16, 1940, was a memorable one in the annals of the church. The blessing of God was unmistakably present from the opening song until the closing benediction. The morning communion service with Doctor Goodwin's message lifted us to heights of spiritual fellowship with God and with one another. Doctor Williams' characteristically stirring message in the afternoon was a challenge to better things for the days to come. The evening sermon was delivered by Dr. J. B. Chapman. His subject was "Christ and the Bible." It was an eloquent, scholarly and inspiring message that seemed to electrify the congregation of almost 6,000 listeners that crowded the great auditorium. Requests and pleas for the publication of the sermon were made both to the speaker and to the Publishing House executives. Therefore the message is now available, for the benefit of many who heard it and wish to read it as well as hear it, also for the many thousands who were not privileged to attend the service but who through reading this address will be led to a deeper love for the Bible and the Christ of the Bible." We are thankful for the work of Richard Thompson in overseeing this repository. In this message, “Upon Our Lord's Sermon on the Mount: Discourse Twelve,” we encounter a powerful message and warning to Christians for every generation. Wesley unpacks Jesus' warning in Matthew 7:15-20: "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits." Wesley challenges us to discern truth from deception, cautioning against leaders who appear righteous yet lead others astray with teachings that veer from Christ's narrow path of humility, love, and holiness. He calls for careful examination of the fruits of their lives and doctrines, urging listeners to hold fast to the true way of salvation and bring all teachings to the test of Scripture.   Lifelong Learning Code: 80890 Click here to learn about Lifelong Learning   *this episode was created with the help of AI*

— It is believed that humans have been using psychedelic drugs since the dawn of civilization. In Western culture, however, only recently has science begun to understand how psychedelics may aid trauma healing. Whenever something terrible happens to you or you're in a harmful place for a long time, you are traumatized. Trauma can occur when you experience something terrible. In some cases, trauma develops when you are subjected to an extended period of harmful circumstances. It affects both the mind and body. Traditionally, mental health treatment has focused on talk therapy and medication, interventions that are often quite effective at relieving psychological distress. However, many mental health practitioners are now working with psychedelics and transforming their perspective on healing trauma. As a result, psychedelic treatment may provide a less painful means of accessing the interface between the unconscious and the body.  Valeria interviews Megan Salar  — She is the author of  “EMDR For Dummies and The EMDR Workbook for Trauma and PTSD: Skills to Manage Triggers, Move Beyond Traumatic Memories, and Take Back Your Life. Megan Salar, MSW, ACADC, is an EMDR Clinician, Trainer and Author who earned her Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work from Northwest Nazarene University in 2011. I am convinced that security and joy are connected. So, what do I mean by joy? From my perspective, joy is a SETTLED GLADNESS— rooted in finding our security and our identity in God, who is trustworthy, faithful and unchanging. But this whole thing isn't easy right? So, in today's sermon, we are talking about the invitation to travel light so that we can make room for God to bring deliverance, peace, righteousness, justice, light and joy in ways we don't expect. We want to feel our worth. We want to know that we are loved, significant, and valued. We desire this, but because there are so many messages competing for our attention, we can easily forget that we are worthy of love. In this unexpected passage in Matthew, we will realize that Jesus invites us to be a part of the family, frees us from what is holding us back, and gives us hope for the future. Through all of this, Jesus will remind us that we have great worth. Relocating, rather than re-strategizing, will bring us into friendship with others who can experience the hope of the Jesus through our lives together. —— Danny Atkins currently serves as an executive pastor at Nampa College Church and as a part-time professor at Northwest Nazarene University. The Back Side of the Cross: An Atonement Theology for the Abused and Abandoned. Cascade Books, an imprint of Wipf and Stock Publishers, 2022. Kindle edition. Book Description The cross has always been portrayed as the means of salvation and forgiveness for sinners, but does it have anything to say to those who have been sinned against? This book shows that the atonement of Christ has powerful potential to speak to those who have been wronged, especially those who have been abused and abandoned in countless ways—those who cower at the back side of the cross wondering if they are included. As victims of various kinds of abuse are beginning to come out of the shadows in cultural conversation and in the context of the church, The Back Side of the Cross is a timely book for several audiences. It is thoroughly rigorous and will interest theologians and their students; it also offers a very practical section for pastors and those who want to care for the wounded; and it can even reach survivors themselves as it offers true hope in the urgency of such real pain. About the Co-Author Brent Peterson is Dean of the College of Theology and Christian Ministries and Professor of Theology at Northwest Nazarene University. He is a leading voice in the Wesleyan tradition on the sacraments, and founded the Wesleyan Liturgical Society. Today's conversation is a special one. My friend, Dr. Mike Kipp, is here to share with us, and let me tell you what… I am so thankful for this conversation. Mike is a devoted follower of Jesus and an avid wake surfer. He loves his family deeply, he is a beloved professor of practical theology and someone who dives in to love on the often forgotten people in our community… And…. Mike has gone through some really tough times. In fact, he went through a time several years ago when he felt like God was absent… Yes. A leader in the church felt this way and I am just so grateful that he is willing to share his story, because oftentimes we feel like we can't voice our hardships or speak up about our crises of faith. Today, Mike will share what his season of darkness was like and how he sifted his way through with vulnerability, authenticity, and the faith and love of his community. We can make it through the dark, but we can't do it alone. So, as we dive into this episode, I hope you are reminded that there are others who are with you on the journey. I also hope that you are reminded today that you are seen and known by God…. The God who doesn't run from suffering, but runs toward it for our sake. Mike Kipp has served young people in various roles for the past 30 years in California, Kansas and Idaho. He's been a youth pastor, professor, pastor of intergenerational connections and public school board member. For the past 18 years he has taught at Northwest Nazarene University and is a professor of practical theology. Mike has degrees from Cal Poly SLO, Nazarene Theological Seminary and Fuller Theological Seminary. Mike is also the author of the several works, including his latest book, Making Room: The Purpose and Practice of Youth Ministry. Mike is married to Sandy and they have two kids, Spencer and McKenna, with whom they love to adventure. Mike loves the academic calendar because all summer he gets to mountain bike, camp, wake surf, and read the daily newspaper with a cup of coffee.

Today, my Pastor, Scott Daniels, is on the podcast. Scott is one of the most well-respected theologians in our denomination (and beyond) globally. He is also a beloved college professor, a deeply invested pastoral leader, and a mega sports enthusiast. I am so grateful for Pastor Scott's investment in my life and ministry… As a young leader, trying to figure out what it looks like to be obedient to God's call on my life, it has been amazing to have mentors, like Scott, as examples in my life, but also voices of encouragement. As you will hear, Scott has served in a variety of leadership roles. Leadership can bring pressure, loneliness, and discouragement from critics… but those themes don't have to be the dominant narratives. Today, Pastor Scott shares with us about his journey… and how he has stayed rooted in the knowledge of God's love and God's best for him — which has allowed him not to cave to the unhealthy pressures of leadership. Dr. Scott Daniels is senior pastor at Nampa College Church of the Nazarene and Pastoral Scholar in Residence at Northwest Nazarene University. Scott has also pastored in Pasadena, California and Richardson, Texas and served as the dean of School of Theology at Azusa Pacific University and Seminary. He is a frequent guest speaker and lecturer at churches, camp meetings, and college campuses. He received his MDiv and PhD in theology and ethics from Fuller Theological Seminary. A contributorto several books, journals, and magazines, he is the author of The First 100 Days: A Pastor'sGuide; Seven Deadly Spirits: The Message of Revelation's Letters for Today's Church; and TheCycle of Victorious Living: Commit, Trust, Delight and Rest in Jesus Christ. His most recent book is Embracing Exile: Living Faithfully as God's Unique People in the World. Most importantly, Scott is married to Debbie and they have four adult children… and a very well loved doodle named Henley.

Welcome to episode sixty-seven of New Creation Conversations. I'm excited to have a second conversation today with my good friend Dr. Michael Lodahl. Mike is Professor of Theology and World Religions at Point Loma Nazarene University. Mike is an alum of Northwest Nazarene University, has an MDiv from Nazarene Theological Seminary, and a PhD from Emory University. Mike has written extensively on narrative theology, holiness, and the relationship of Christian and Islamic faiths. Our conversation is centered on his most recent book Praying with Jesus: Meditations on the Lord's Prayer – published by The Foundry Press.Mike is one of my favorite people to chat with anytime, but I really did love this conversation on prayer. His reflections on the Lord's Prayer – and what we learn about the nature of character of God from it – are helpful. But I love that The Foundry has not only published the book but has turned it into a resource for pastors for preaching and have created resources for children and youth to participate in the series as well. It is well done, and I know it will be a blessing to those congregations who journey together through it. Mike is a great storyteller and a rich and thoughtful theologian. My challenge in my conversations with Mike is keeping it to an hour. I think you will love his reflections on prayer – and I get a couple of good thoughts in this week also. Thanks for leaning into these New Creation Conversations.

All these together have had an effect on how we as a community redefine function in the new reality and for institutions of higher learning the effect has been complicated and challenging. Have you ever felt like there were invisible barriers preventing you from achieving your goals or getting to where you wanted to be in life? For many of us, these barriers are the result of traumatic experiences that have negatively impacted the way we view ourselves, others, and the world around us.  While various therapeutic modalities seek to help individuals overcome trauma, a technique called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) may deliver powerful and efficient results. In Episode 93 of The MINDSet Game® podcast, Megan McQuary – a Certified EMDR Clinician and Trainer, as well as a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional and an Advanced Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor – shares the following: The goals of EMDR and an overview of how it works, including the key things that Megan focuses on when conducting an EMDR session A metaphor to help understand how your brain operates, and why it can be difficult to think logically or make decisions effectively when you are overwhelmed by stress or other negative emotions  The power of bilateral stimulation and how it is used in EMDR At the end of the episode, Megan guides us through a guided visualization using bilateral stimulation. This empowering session is designed to help you reflect on how far you've come in life and discover where you are in relation to the achievement of your goals.  Megan McQuary formerly owned and operated one of the largest treatment centers for substance abuse and trauma in Southeast Idaho, which was voted best in practice for 2019. Her trainings have helped thousands of clinicians across the U.S. get the most out of EMDR, trauma and addiction based skills and practices. She has been invited to train internationally at the International Society of Addiction Medicine in India, the International Conference on Addiction Research and Therapy in Amsterdam and at the Psicologia Institute of Italy. Megan has extensively been trained on the use of EMDR as a treatment protocol and uses EMDR in her practice to achieve improved outcomes with a broad spectrum of clients in the areas of trauma, abuse, attachment and substance abuse. Diane has served Northwest Nazarene University for 24 years as Professor of Historical Theology. She is an alum of Eastern Nazarene College. She has a Master of Divinity degree from Nazarene Theological Seminary and another Master's Degree in Philosophy and PhD in Theological and Religious Studies from Drew University.Diane has co-edited a series of books with Dr. Mark Maddix – Essential Beliefs, Essential Church, Pastoral Practices, and Spiritual Formation (each articulating a Wesleyan theological perspective in those areas). She has written one of the best summaries and introductions to Wesleyan-Holiness theology out there in her book, Discovering Christian Holiness: The Heart of Wesleyan-Holiness Theology. We talk about all of those works, but our primary focus is on her soon-to-be-released book (co-authored with [friend-of-the-podcast] Dr. Brent Peterson), The Back Side of the Cross: An Atonement Theology for the Abused and Abandoned (published by Cascade Press). As you will hear, this has been a book that has been percolating in Diane's life and thoughts for a decade or more, and it is wonderful that it is finally going to come out now. I had a chance to read a pre-publication edition of the book, and it has not only reshaped my imagination in so many ways related to the atonement and the significance of the cross, but it has helped me know how to extend transforming grace to those who have suffered at the hands of others. I'm biased, but I do think Diane and Brent's book has the chance to be deeply transformative in the lives of many people and will change the way those of you who listening and are pastoring will preach in the future. I'm thankful for this new book and the chance to bring this conversation to you.

Welcome to episode fifty-five of New Creation Conversations. In today's conversation I'm delighted to be joined by Dr. Philip Zimmermann. Philip is the co-founder and pastor of Church in Action in Germany. Born in Frankfurt, Philip is known for strategic thinking and creative problem solving. He is a social entrepreneur, a pastor, and a church planter who has started and led several churches, non-profits, and businesses.Philip is an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from European Nazarene College, a Master of Arts in Spiritual formation from Northwest Nazarene University, and a Doctorate of Strategic Leadership from Regent University. When he has the space, Philip teaches university courses in leadership and spiritual formation and speaks at leadership conferences around the world. He has written two books: Problem Solving and Creativity and Time Management. Recently, Philip was in town, and my wife (Debbie) and I had the privilege of attending a seminar he was leading on the mind shift (or change in imagination) necessary for the church to reach an increasingly post-Christian culture. The seminar was challenging and insightful, and so I was excited to get a chance to sit down and have a conversation with Philip about the Church in Action and what he is learning about the mission of the church in this historical moment. One very fun aspect of this conversation is that we were in the same room together. It took me fifty-five of these conversations to finally have one that wasn't on Zoom but face-to-face. I loved not only the chance to spend an hour or so with Philip, but I also came away excited and filled with hope for the future of not only my own denomination but the global Body of Christ as it will be led by young leaders like Philip. I think you will not only learn a lot from our conversation, but you will also be encouraged as well. Thanks for joining me on these weekly journeys toward the new creation. Here's my conversation with Dr. Philip Zimmermann.

Welcome to episode forty-six of New Creation Conversations. In today's conversation I am joined by my longtime friend and colleague both at NNU and at Nampa College Church, Dr. Brent Peterson. Brent is the Professor of Theology and Dean of the College of Theology and Christian Ministries at Northwest Nazarene University. He also serves as the Pastor of Liturgical and Spiritual Formation at College Church. Brent is an alum of NNU. He has a Master of Divinity Degree from Nazarene Seminary and a Ph.D. in Liturgical Studies from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Brent is in his fourteenth year of teaching at NNU and his sixth year as dean.In our conversation Brent and I talk about his book Created to Worship: God's Invitation to Become Fully Human(published by the Foundry). We also discuss three of his forthcoming projects. One is a book he has co-authored with our colleague Dr. Diane Leclerc, entitled The Backside of the Cross. The others are two works that are part of the Wesleyan Theology Series: the first on The Church and another on The Sacraments. Brent and I have known each other since we were kids growing up in the same church in Seattle and I continue to learn so much from him about the formative nature of worship and the way our theology is not just learned in our heads but developed in us through our bodies.
