He's the creative genius behind so many good things happening in the Methodist stream. As a mutual friend says of him, "If you cut JD, he bleeds Jesus and vision!" Amen to that! In this conversation, we talk about the marks of a movement. Watch for the blog that covers his list, so you can print it out and make it part of your own ministry. Its just good stuff.

This recording from November 1, 2024. Signum University presents Thesis Theater with Jay Moses on Saturday, November 1, 2024 at 5pm ET. M.R. James was recognized and acclaimed for his short stories of the macabre written at the turn of the twentieth century. In the 1970's the new genre of Folk Horror arose, basing many of its stories within the England countryside, and claiming M.R. James as a significant foundation and forerunner. While setting most of his stories in present day England, several of them are set within 17th Century England. This Thesis explores four of James' stories with settings in 17th Century England: The Fenstanton Witch, The Ash Tree, Martin's Close and The Rose Garden and attempts to discern what exactly drew James to this time period, but more importantly, what it was about this time period that lent itself to Folk Horror. It is the conclusion of this Thesis that the great instability of England, combining Puritan beliefs, fanatical authority, and brutal punishments, laid the seeds of paranoia and rural unease from which M.R. James and Folk Horror both created tales of terror. About the Presenter: Jay Moses is a pastor at Saint Mark Presbyterian Church in the DC area, teaching adjunct at the University of Maryland. His favorite memories leading to his studies at Signum are finding yellow-worn paperbacks of Ray Bradbury in his sister's book shelf, watching the Hobbit with cheese popcorn made by his mother, and listening to the many ghost stories told by his father while camping. His wife is the best thing about him, and his children continue to wonder if he really reads his books. About Signum Thesis Theaters: Each of our master's students writes a thesis at the end of their degree program, exploring a topic of their choice. The Thesis Theater is their opportunity to present their research to a general audience, and answer questions. All are welcome to attend! Imbalances and injustices have compromised teachers, children, families, and communities. We are at a watershed moment in our human story where schools have become inhumane, unsafe spaces that are putting pressure detrimental to children's developmental readiness, all the while being threatened by outside intruders. Wendy discussed that we need to get out of the auto-pilot trajectory of our current educational system by looking at our children as a whole person and our teachers as humans, have conversations going and see the bigger picture of the school's role in defining what we need to be human. Dr. Lynn Hellerstein, Developmental Optometrist, co-owner of Hellerstein & Brenner Vision Center, P.C., award-winning author and international speaker, holds powerful and inspiring conversations with her guests in the areas of health, wellness, education, sports and psychology. New Hope Daily SOAP - Daily Devotional Bible Reading

Daily Dose of Hope April 3, 2024  Day 4 of Week 1 Scripture reading for today – Genesis 9-11, Mark 4  Welcome to the Daily Dose of Hope, New Hope Church's daily devotional that complements our Bible reading plan.  Let's be real.  Today's reading from Genesis is a bit strange.  This isn't the first and it won't be the last time we read Scripture in Genesis that raises both eyebrows and questions.  One minute, we have this beautiful covenant that God makes with Noah, signified by the rainbow.  The next minute, Noah gets drunk and passes out naked in his tent.  There is family drama and Noah becomes furious with his son, Ham, for looking upon his nakedness and not doing anything to cover him up.  Then, the two other sons do their best to cover up dad's naked body.  I've been asked about this passage quite a bit by people confused about what made Noah so mad.  Noah's reaction is strange to our modern minds, particularly since he curses not Ham, but Ham's son, Canaan.  The short answer to eveyone's question is I don't really know.  I've done a lot of research, reading commentaries by people a lot smarter than myself, and it seems that there is no consensus.  Some think something a lot more immoral and insidious happened in that tent with drunk Noah and his son, Ham.  The truth is that we will never know and we don't need to know.  The whole situation simply reveals that sin was still clearly an issue on planet earth.  The flood did not “cure” humanity from the evils of sin in any way, shape, or form.  This will only become more evident as we work our way through the book of Genesis.  It's going to take something bigger and more powerful than flood waters to truly cleanse all of us. What about the whole cursing of Canaan?  It's possible that Noah recognized something in his son and grandson that was quite disturbing to him.  A truth was revealed.  God knew that Noah was without fault but something happened to Ham and that was passed to Canaan.  The following generations of Canaanites were known for their brutality and lack of regard for human life.  Be sure to also work through Mark chapter 4.  There are some pretty powerful parables here, including the sower and the mustard seed.  What I want to briefly touch on, however, is Jesus calming the storm.  This is such a powerful narrative.  The disciples are in the boat with Jesus when a serious storm comes upon them.  Living in Florida, we know about really bad storms that up up fast.  The disciples are clearly scared and seriously think that drowning is a possibility.  Jesus, however, is quite content, sleeping like a baby in the stern of the boat.  The disciples start yelling at him as they are furiously bailing out water, “Don't you care about us?”  And of course we know what happens.  Jesus wakes up and calms the storm with just a few stern words.  It's worth mentioning that we aren't promised a perfect life, not at all!  There are times when the storms in our lives are quite nasty.  Afterall, we live in a broken and sinful world (which hasn't really changed that much since Noah's time).  But there is good news, very good news really!  What God does promise us is that when the world comes crashing down, God is right there with us. Jesus is there with us, in the sinking boat. Whatever difficulties you are dealing with right now, you are not alone bailing out water.  Jesus is with you. This is an important part of the story: Jesus isn't elsewhere. He isn't in some cushy palace somewhere eating olives and hummus. He is in the boat with the disciples. Sinking and bailing.  Bailing and sinking.  J.D. Walt (author of Seedbed's Wake-up Call) writes, “We aren't sending our prayers up there somewhere.”  Rather, we are speaking directly and immediately to the risen Lord. Though unseen to the naked eye, he is right here, right now.  Jesus is not with us in the sense that someone who can't come to our birthday party says they will be with us “in spirit.” Jesus is not with us “in spirit,” but in person–in the power of the Holy Spirit.  He is closer than our very breath.  So wherever you are, whatever anxieties, worries, sadness, grief you are dealing with, YOU are not alone...you are never alone.  You are with the one who has the power to calm the storm on the outside and on the inside. Blessings, Pastor Vicki

I have to confess and of course it's no secret to the people who know me is that there's a little bit of a defiant spirit within me. I Like to be different. Needless to say this sometimes drives my wife crazy and so I try and tone it down but that's who I am. And maybe that's why I have always found this to be my favorite Christmas song that I like to sing and particularly sing the last words as loud as I can. I often say that God asked us to make a joyful noise and since I'm not often times in tune or on key I'll just take it as my joyful noise. Heard a podcast this past week that really helped me to understand because they share the truth that perhaps we all need to learn, maybe even write, maybe from time to time sing songs of defiance. I am going to do more of that and it just so happened that my favorite song for Christmas is very much a song of defiance ... And thanks to my friends at Seedbed communications for the inspiration. Thanks Stan

“Receive the Holy Spirit,” Jesus said to his disciples in John 20:22. Yet, for many Christians, the Holy Spirit can feel like a mystery. How do we hear it? How do we receive it? How do we discern what it's telling us and what our spiritual gifts are? How do we know that what we hear is from God and not our own internal desires? This week on "In No Hurry," author Dan Wilt unpacks all of that as he shares about his 70-day devotional, "Receive the Holy Spirit." After Lent, I am encouraging all of our SOAP subscribers to sign up for Wake-up Call, a daily devotional produced by Seedbed, the publishing arm of Asbury Seminary. Wake-up Call includes daily Scripture, reflection, prayer, and questions. It's designed to help us reorient our lives around loving Jesus. Could there be anything better? Many of us at New Hope already receive Wake-up Call in our email every morning. Reading this together as a church family will be unifying and provide us with common language. Recently, there has been a focus on awakening and revival, particularly with the events at Asbury University. To register for Wake-up Call, go to seedbed.com and scroll down the page. You will find a place to add your name and email. I have personally felt led to take a sabbatical from writing the SOAP. It has been a blessing for me these past couple years to have this daily practice and I have benefited from the regular rhythm of reading, praying, reflecting, and writing. However, it also takes a great deal of time. It's time for me to simply take a break from this particular writing venture and maybe try some different kinds of writing projects. In the meantime, I think we will all benefit from the daily encouragement of Wake-up Call. I appreciate your understanding. I will close this note with some of my favorite Scripture about the power of God's Word. Hebrews 4:12, For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Since the beginning of the movement, the people called Methodist have always been a singing people. We know that Charles Wesley himself wrote thousands of hymns that communicated Methodism's emphasis on God's grace and love in Christ, the transforming power of the Spirit, and the journey of sanctification. Many of these hymns are contained in the current United Methodist Hymnal, and while there have been some supplements to the hymnal that incorporate some more contemporary worship music, the hymnals that most United Methodists use is now more than 30 years old. Other Wesleyan traditions use different hymnals, and even more churches now use screens to enable congregations to sing more contemporary worship music. In the digital age, the idea of a new hymnal might seem like a throwback to a bygone era.   But a new hymnal promises to recapture the great songs of the Wesleyan tradition and bring them to a new audience hungry for both good music and good theology. Our Great Redeemer's Praise , published by Seedbed, will soon be available to churches everywhere. Dr. Jonathan Powers is one of the editors of this new collection, along with Julie Tennent and many other contributors. Jonathan is the Associate Dean of the E. Stanley Jones School of Mission and Ministry and Assistant Professor of Worship Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary.    Check out Our Great Redeemer's Praise.   Send us your questions and comments at podcast@wesleyancovenant.org and follow us on Twitter @WCAPod.
