In this episode, Caleb is joined by Drew Sparks (PhD, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) pastor at Trinity Reformed Baptist Church in Terre Haute, Indiana to discuss free will in the reformed tradition and just how closely Jonathan Edwards was to his forbearers in this area of theology. Together they discuss questions like: what are the intellect and will? What is the difference between metaphysical and moral freedom? What are determinism, incompatibilism, and compatibilism? What do these things have to do with God's decree, foreknowledge, and Christ's human freedom? How close was Edwards conception of free will to the Reformed? And More.

The "mountaintop" experiences are wonderful and God uses them to prepare us for the trials. Join Dawn and Steve in the Morning for a devotional from Blackaby Ministries International about experiencing victory in the trials ahead. The LORD our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying: "'You have dwelt long enough at this mountain." Deuteronomy 1:6 Also, author Guillaume Bignon has a conversation with Dawn about his book Confessions of a French Atheist: How God Hijacked My Quest to Disprove the Christian Faith. Dr. Guillaume Bignon was born and raised in France, where he studied math, physics, and engineering science. He currently works as a software engineering manager. After a wholly improbable conversion from atheism to Christianity, Guillaume earned a master's in biblical literature with an emphasis on the New Testament, and a Ph.D. in philosophical theology. His areas of interest include the metaphysics of free will, natural theology, and soteriology. Guillaume is an executive committee member of Association Axiome, a society of French-speaking Christian scholars. He and his wife, Katherine, have five young (and adorable) children.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's one of the more intriguing titles one might encounter--Confessions of a French Atheist: How God Hijacked my Quest to Disprove the Christian Faith. And as our heroes settle in to discuss the book, Messieurs Trueman and Pruitt find its author to be just as engaging. No longer an atheist (but still very much French), Guillaume Bignon is an analytical philosopher and computer scientist working in New York's financial industry. Guillaume came to faith through an unlikely series of providential meetings and conversations with Christians around the world. As the foundations of his unbelief began to crumble, Bignon discovered the wonder of a God that offers salvation freely and not by good works. Listen as the three discuss miracles, evolution, and the intersection of faith and science. We have a number of copies of Guillaume's book for giveaway. Register here! The books are published and supplied by Tyndale House.

While recording our podcasts discussing Tim's response to Guillaume Bignon, I realized I'd disagreed with something I'd written down on our notes. Rather than cut off recording to discuss it, I decided to keep the cameras rolling so-to-speak, and both Tim and I liked the free flowing discussion that ensued. So I figured, why not make it into a bonus episode? Since this wasn't necessarily meant to be released, keep in mind that not everything we say is our official positions on the topics at hand. We're likely both wrong at points in this episode (probably all episodes to be fair), and after closer inspection we might retract what we said. However, we thought it would be fun for you guys to see what the discussions between Tim and me are like before the podcast gets going. Enjoy!
If you haven't heard by now, Tim wrote a book. It's a good book. You should buy it and read it. However, some people thought it was a not good book. One person in particular, philosopher Guillaume Bignon, wrote a 50 page refutation of Tim's book. Tim wrote an article as a rejoinder to this refutation. Now we're talking about it. In this episode, we'll talk about the fifth of what Tim perceives to be Bignon's problems with his book: apologetic significance. I know, I know, we have not done a podcast in awhile. And by that I mean our last episode was August 27th of 2020! There's no real interesting story as to why we took such a long break, other than the fact that I (Scott) started my M.A. in Philosophy and Tim published a book. As it turns out, this takes up a lot of time. Well, fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately) for you all, we have come back from our extended hiatus well-rested and ready to talk some more apologetics and theology with you wonderful folks. Or I suppose more accurately, AT you wonderful folks. In this episode, Tim and I discuss some of the response he received to his book. In particular, we do a brief overview of some of the criticisms raised by Guillaume Bignon, a Calvinist whose views are critiqued in the book. While Tim is still yet to publish his full response, we wanted to give everyone a taste of some of the things he is going to say. Stay tuned for more episodes coming weekly! Bryan and Paul interview Guillaume Bignon about his radical conversion from atheist rock star and volleyball athlete to Christian husband, father, philosopher, and apologist. Through his own reading of the Bible and the friendship of a pastor, Guillaume realized that he did not understand the Christian faith he rejected. This led him on a path of difficult questions, long nights, and ultimately a powerful realization of what makes the gospel good news. Skip to 3:30 to skip the banter and get to the good stuff. Bignon affirms "Theistic Determinism," the audacious belief that God causally determines all things, including all your choices, desires, and actions; but yet, mysteriously we are still morally accountable for those choices, desires and actions (ie "Calvinistic Compatibilism"). The plan is to divide our response into three parts: Part 1: Determinism refuted Biblically (Hosted by Dr. Flowers at Soteriology 101): This Video Part 2: Determinism refuted Theologically (Hosted by Dr. Hunter at Trinity Radio): https://youtu.be/w7qcmZ-cO_M Part 3: Determinism refuted Philosophically (Hosted by Dr. Stratton at Free Thinking Ministries): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjIMb...
In this jumbo episode, Eli Ayala interviews Guillaume Bignon, a Calvinist who responds to “3” non-Calvinist critics. This is one is is jammed pack with great content.
In this second part interview with Guillaume, he responds to a “3” part response made towards our first interview. In this episode, Bignon provides a great defense of Calvinistic thought against Leighton Flowers, Braxton Hunters, and Tim Stratton

Jordan and Brandon talk with Guillaume Bignon about Calvinism and the problem of evil. If God determines our actions, how can we be held morally responsible? How can God not be the cause of evil? What is free will? What is compatibilism?

Does apologetics work, or is it usually a new love interest, friend, or some catastrophic life experience that brings people to faith in Christ? Perhaps it's a more complex question than that.
Calvinist theology holds that everything is pre-ordained by God. Critics say that such a deterministic view makes God morally responsible for evil and means that sinners can’t be blamed for their wrongdoing – after all they were predestined to do it. Guilluame Bignon, a French convert to Christianity who is now a Calvinist philosopher/theologian, seeks to answer these questions in his new book Excusing Sinners and Blaming God: A Calvinist Assessment of Determinism, Moral Responsibility, and Divine Involvement in Evil. He engages W Paul Franks of Tyndale University College, Toronto on the issues, who holds to a Wesleyan/ Arminian view of libertarian freedom.
It's kind of late, we know... Justin, Lucinda, Malky & Martin chat through the October edition of the magazine. Guillaume Bignon was a French man living a happy and godless life until recently when a series of events led him on an intellectual journey towards Christianity. Today he is a theologian. He discusses his story with Wade Padgett, who went in the other direction, becoming an atheist after years as a Christian. What role does evidence and experience play in conversion, and is belief in God 'properly basic' as Guillaume claims?
