At age 9, Dave Fano started collecting comic books because his big brother was into them. Then, he discovered that different editions and collections had value. By 14, he got a job at a comic book store where he also bought and traded his own comic books. For Dave, it was mostly about having fun, and of course, he enjoyed making money. The son of Cuban immigrants, Dave grew up in Miami. In high school, he worked for his Dad's construction company as an estimator. At graduation, he told his Dad that he wanted to go to art school, to be an artist. Dad said, “That's not a real job. You can't make a living doing that. That's a hard life.” So, at the last minute, Dave applied to college and majored in architecture at Columbia University, seeing it as a compromise between art and the design side of construction. But he knew that it wasn't what he wanted to do. Every step of the way, Dave wondered, ‘how can I hack this education to be something else?' As he finished his undergrad degree, he became aware of 3-D digital architecture which appealed to him as he loved technology. Dave applied to Columbia's highly competitive graduate program in digital architecture and he got in. Dave worked as an architect while being on the adjunct faculty at Columbia's Graduate School of Architecture for a few years. He then co-founded the technology consulting firm CASE in 2008, growing it to 63 employees. They worked with clients such as Google, Disney and Apple. In 2015 CASE was acquired by their client, WeWork, the coworking space company. At WeWork, Dave held the titles Chief Product Officer, Chief Technology Officer, Chief Development Officer, and eventually Chief Growth Officer. Today, Dave is focusing his passion on empowering people with tools & resources to grow their careers as Founder & CEO of Teal. He is on a mission to empower professionals with the guidance and resources they need to make career decisions with confidence. In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Dave's journey: At WeWork, Dave partnered to launch product lines such as WeWork Enterprise, WeWork HQ, and We Membership. In under 1 year, the team at Teal has grown the platform & community to over 20,000 users committed to growing their careers. When you look back on the decade in tech, one of the biggest stories will be the rise and fall of WeWork. And while the company is still around, it has shed around $40B in valuation in the past few months. At the forefront of the story is the mercurial Founder of WeWork - Adam Neumann. And a Wall Street Journal Reporter named Eliot Brown - who broke some of the now-infamous stories about the company. Today, we hosted Eliot as a guest on This is Your Life in Silicon Valley. We talked to Eliot about numerous topics, including why WeWork was valued like a high flying tech company even though the core of its product was basic real estate. We ask Eliot to explain WeWork's basic business model, and what Adam did in order to sell the vision of the company to employees and investors. Eliot recalls his first meeting with Adam and what it was like to be at WeWork HQ in 2013. Eliot goes on to talk about corporate governance (or lack thereof) at the company, explaining the amount of power Adam had over the board. We get into escalation of committment, and how it played a major part in how the story unfolded. We dig into the myths and realities around whether Adam really wants to live forever, whether he really had Run DMC in the office after a layoff, and some of the other nuances of the story. Eliot talks about his perspective on Silicon Valley valuations, whether he wants to stick around here, and how he approaches reporting in the Bay Area. You do not want to miss this special holiday edition of This is Your Life in Silicon Valley.
On this episode we have the super man Hannes Bend. Hannes shares his birth trauma story, the art of forgiveness, and how the power of breathing can turn you into a super human. Hannes Bend started the company breathing.ai focusing on well-being with screen experiences using machine learning (deep breathing + deep learning). Breathing awareness and deep breathing have enabled Hannes to overcome life-long stress symptoms and anxiety after birth trauma and cerebral palsy. Hannes has been working as an artist and researcher internationally, recently in neuroscience at The University Oregon and published papers on Virtual Reality, visual stimuli, and meditation. The studies of Bend’s team from The Institute of Neuroscience and Quantum Physics Alemàn Lab at the University of Oregon won “Best Presentation Award in the panel “Wellbeing Computing: AI meets Health and Happiness Science” at the Association for Advancement of Artificial Intelligence Spring Symposia 2016 at Stanford University. Research and Augmented and Virtual Reality projects were also developed and/or presented at MIT Media Lab, Harvard University, Frost Museum of Science, The Rubin Museum of Art among others. Over the past five years, Hannes Bend has been working with 50+ scientists, psychologists, developers, and artists from renowned universities and created multiple continents for VR/AR biofeedback projects, also for Wim “The Iceman” Hof. Hannes also guides mindfulness, yoga and breathing in schools (for the nonprofit Mission Be), offices (e.g. WeWork HQ), jail complex Rikers Island, workshops in yoga studios, private clients at year-round for his meetup "Breathe NY" at Elizabeth Street Garden. Hannes believes a conscious experience and guidance of breathing can fundamentally improve life quality and peace in the world. This week on the podcast we have an in-depth conversation with Julie Rice, a co-founder of SoulCycle and a Partner at WeWork. SoulCycle’s rise is now the stuff of legend. Julie and her fellow co-founders took the fitness and business worlds by storm, and grew a fanatical customer base by focusing on who they wanted their customers to become. Now Julie is a partner at WeWork, another business that feels more like a movement. Both SoulCylce and WeWork are prime examples of what you can build when you provide best-in-class experiences that help customers reach their aspirations. SnackNation CEO Sean Kelly sat down with Julie this summer in WeWork HQ in New York as the SnackNation and WeWork teams were putting the finishing touches on the WeMRKT. The recently launched premium onsite markets provides a meaningful and relevant retail amenity to WeWork members, including snack and beverages curated by SnackNation. (For more on WeMRKT, check out this New Yorker article: “WeWork Does Bodegas.”) But that's just scratching the surface of all the goodness Julie gave us in this conversation. She takes us through the entire SoulCycle founding story, discusses what it takes to scale culture (and why that’s important), and explains why building communities is really her life's work. "Office space is not only about science and numbers. It's first and foremost about the people!" Podcast 65 with WeWork’s Design Director Rachid How will we work in the future? We’ve been there: It’s a WeWork office in Chelsea, NYC. At first we thought it's one of the many WeWork locations in New York City but it was actually their HQ. We had the chance to meet Rachid Abu-Hassan, Design Director at WeWork, and we learned a lot about how the 20bn ‘community workspace’ startup influences the modern workplace. Rachid has a background in acoustics, which gives him a unique view on how he sees the influence that space has on the people who work there every day, from human to cable, from engineering to emotions. There is more to an office than screens and desks. Michael’s experience at his agency has shown him how an office can actually change the way people work. And at Blackboat we see the office as a communication tool - a very efficient one, but just a tool. So we already are very open to rethinking old ways of designing office space. But Rachid and the WeWork HQ challenged us to rethink that linear way of approaching workspace redesign. And we understood that this is just the beginning: Office space needs a makeover, especially during times when the digital and physical worlds merge and the lines between work and pleasure keep blurring. Let's open up the discussion for your thoughts. What are the best New Workspace concepts that you know? How do you like the WeWork approach (there is also a video about our visit in Christoph channel Youtube.com/christophmagnussen)? What are concepts that you have experienced and enjoyed? What are epic fails?
