As technology like Augmented (AR), Virtual (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR) as well as AI become better and better, the use cases for business continue to grow. In this week's fascinating episode, Ted Dinsmore from SphereGen Technologies explains what these technologies are and how they can be used to solve complex business challenges. After initially serving the medical industry, Ted realized that AR/VR/MR and AI could make a big impact on manufacturing as well. In this episode, Ted walks Ari through some of the use cases of each technology to help our listeners imagine what could be done in their our facility. Technologies like these are vital as the older manufacturing leaders must pass on vital information to a younger, more technically savvy generation. The uses of new technology are only limited by your imagination…so come imagine what can be accomplished. Augmented Reality, VR, XR… what is all this? Shouldn't we all be using these devices by now? Is Apple going to change everything? Or is it Meta? In this episode, we go in into the arenas of AR, VR and MR, explain what these different technologies are, the developments thus far, whether (or not) we are an inflection point on devices, software, applications and content, as well as on what the (hopefully non sci-fi) future holds.Navigation:Intro (01:34)What is it and how does it work? Welcome to episode 45 of Tech Deciphered. Today, we are going to talk about VR, AR, MR; mixed reality, in the context of the announcement of the Apple Vision Pro, their first spatial computer. Obviously, already talking about VR, AR, MR is old school, we should be talking about spatial computer. Apple has been very careful about not employing the world VR or AR. Maybe let's start about what is all of this and how do they work?Section 1 - What is it and how does it work?Nuno G. PedroLet's start with an easy one, which is extended reality. Extended reality is everything. Extended reality encompasses augmented reality, mixed reality, and virtual reality. When you see XR, that means extended reality. It's the encompassing word for all these forms that we're going to talk about today. Nuno G. PedroAugmented reality is probably the simplest form. It's a view of the real world with some pieces of digital. But normally the definition for augmented reality is it's a non interactive domain. We'll come back to that when we talked about mixed reality. It's you basically seeing things that are on a plane, for example, using your mobile phone, your iPhone, an android device, and looking around you and seeing things that appear that are digital, but they appear in the real world. That would be augmented reality. There's almost no interaction involved, etc, etc. Nuno G. PedroMixed reality brings in the element of interaction. You still see the real world, but you also see these digital objects and these virtual objects and you can interact and make them interact and you can interact with that world. To be very honest with you guys, I'm still an old-school guy. So for me, augmented reality and mixed reality are effectively the same. Nuno G. PedroI think at some point, someone decided to do this distinction, maybe because of the devices that are linked to it and to really separate in particular what was happening in mobile augmented reality, what was happening with mobile phones. But ultimately, for me, they're very similar. Obviously, for me they're almost indistinguishable anyway. The people out there, that like distinguishing them, that's the difference between AR and MR; mixed reality. Nuno G. PedroFinally, there's virtual reality, which is a fully immersive virtual world experience, the one that normally uses things like in the past look like helmets, things that basically take over most of your head because you want to be fully immersed. It can't be just full, a simple goggle experience. It needs to be a more immersive experience. That's basically what defines virtual reality or VR. Nuno G. PedroAgain, XR; extended reality, AR and MR,

[Editor’s Note: Army Mad Scientist is pleased to present our latest episode of The Convergence podcast, recorded on location at I/ITSEC 2022, the world’s largest modeling and simulation conference in Orlando, Florida. Co-hosts Luke Shabro and Matt Santaspirt spoke with Dr. Maria Kozhevnikov about non-relaxing meditative states, enhanced cognition, the relationship between video games and reaching that enhanced cognitive state, and the associated ramifications for Army training — Enjoy!] [If the podcast dashboard is not rendering correctly for you, please click here to listen to the podcast.] Maria Kozhevnikov, Associate Professor of Psychology at the National University of Singapore and Visiting Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School, is a cognitive neuroscientist with an interest in enhancing human cognition and understanding the potential of the human mind. Her research uses modern technology, such as augmented, virtual, and mixed reality (AR/VR/MR), as well as ancient meditative techniques. The following bullet points highlight key insights gleaned from our interview with Dr. Kozhevnikov: Meditation is a great technique to induce relaxation and reduce stress, but there are many different kinds of meditation. To enhance cognitive capacity, a type of meditation can be used to induce stress to an individual in order for them to learn from it and combat it in a controlled environment. Meditation which is arousal-based or “good stress”-based will deliver stress that the individual can handle while still focusing on and completing the task at hand. This type of meditation is more suited to Soldiers on the battlefield who will be operating in austere environments with external factors competing for their focus. Arousal-based meditation releases adrenaline into the blood stream(as opposed to cortisol being released from “bad stress”). Adrenaline triggers the body’s “fight or flight” response, which in turn amplifies cognitive and mental resources to meet the demand of the task at hand. People process information about the space around them in two ways: allocentric and egocentric. Allocentric processing involves an individual interpreting objects in space as they relate to other objects in space, while egocentric processing involves an individual interpreting objects in space as they relate to their own body. This distinction is important because it identifies two different ways in which learning and training occurs. It’s very important for a pilot to be egocentric while it’s important for an air traffic controller to be allocentric. Different job types require different learning methods. Game-based training does not necessarily have to be immersive or high fidelity to effectively train the mind.Two-dimen
A massive aerospace corporation cancelled an order for 40,000 Oculus Quest VR headsets when they saw the technology in this video. In this very special TechFirst, I've received permission from TechBeach Retreat to share the first global unveiling of a technology called AirGlass from Mobeus HQ which, the founder Richie Etwaru says, is finally the Z-axis of tech: the depth to the horizontal and vertical of our flat screens. The most interesting part to me is that AR/VR/MR headsets are bulky and limiting. This potentially works right on every computer's screen in the world: no additional hardware needed. After Richie's demo of Airless 2, we chat about the consequences and uses of technology you can engage with physically, as well as get into some of the details of how it's made, including that it doesn't really touch the operating system but operates between the camera and the GPU in pretty much any computer. After a stellar liquidity-driven run in the traditional accounting year that ended yesterday, India's equity markets entered Samvat 2078 with muhurat trading last evening. This token trading on the bourses set the tone for the new Samvat year. So, how should we expect the markets to behave this year? What will be the broader driving themes, and what will be the risks? The shares of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) nosedived last week, just hours after the Centre announced taking half of its revenue from convenience fee. With this move, the government was hoping to collect between Rs 150 crore and Rs 200 crore annually. But the announcement led to a 29% drop in the PSU's shares and a market cap erosion of almost Rs 21,000 crore. Forced by this, the government made a U-Turn within hours. Retail investors alleged that the government ignored the rights of minority shareholders. Now what does the U-turn mean for investors of PSU stocks? And will it affect the valuation of LIC in any way? In 2011, when it was born as Faasos, Rebel Foods wasn't the cloud kitchen startup it is today. In fact, cofounders Kallol Banerjee and Jaydeep Barman had begun with the idea of setting up a high-street quick-service restaurant (QSR) chain selling wraps. So, what did Rebel Foods do differently to become India's first unicorn in the cluttered cloud kitchen market? In this exclusive interview, Kallol Banerjee recounts the journey and discusses the way forward. Today, wearable headsets are bringing down the walls between physical and virtual worlds. You could shut out the physical world around you and take a ride through Hogwarts on a dragon, or you could find digital arrows overlaid on the building in front of your eyes, to help you navigate better. Let's understand the difference between three path-breaking technologies with infinite possibilities. Listen to these and more in today's Business Standard Morning Show podcast. Watch Video

This paper explores the insights provided by the old media of novels, to informatic strategies implementable through AR technologies, using Invisible Cities (2010) by Italo Calvino. The social systems that must be traversed in basic everyday life can be labyrinthine and opaque to all but the most indoctrinated. The individual’s experience of the world is guided our by memories and communications with others. Society attempts to create collective actions strategies through which to communicate information, but all too often systems are set up for a normative level of intellect and ability. Managed subjectivity is a vital aspect of literature, as books act as partnerships between authors and readers. There are lessons to be learned from this developed medium which have huge value in guiding good design in new frontiers. Using Critical Disability Theory (Pothier and Devlin, 2006) and concepts such as emotional design (Norman, 2004), and civilising processes/habitus (Bourdieu, 1977; Elias, 2012) the paper argues for inclusive design approaches. The paper attempts to bring lessons from traditional mediums’ narratives to inform the design of informatic strategies for AR/VR/MR. Invisible Cities follows Kublai Khan and Marco Polo as they discuss 55 distinct cities all of which are Venice, all discovered through the consideration of different fundamental aspects of perceptions and human life. These all co-exist layered on top of and intertwined with each other. Every individual experiences the world through their own lens, influenced by their physical and emotional condition, and their context in the world. Phil J. Ryan is a PhD student in Inclusive Design & Creative Technology Innovation candidate based in SMARTlab, University College Dublin. He works on sociologically informed technological solutions to problems of population movement. He researches migration, bureaucracy, user experience, and inclusive design. His dissertation is titled ‘Bureaucracy Map: An inclusively designed dynamic informatics system for institutional navigation.’
