Thom Francis introduces us to poets Susan Kress and Will Nixon. Both of whom were finalists in the 2025 Stephen A. DiBiase Poetry Prize Contest. -------- The 2025 Stephen A. DiBiase Poetry Prize winners and finalists were recently announced with many poets from the Capital Region and Hudson Valley included in the list. The DiBiase contest was created in 2015 to offer a more inclusive and welcoming alternative to traditional poetry competitions. There are no entry fees, no line or page limits, and no restrictions on subject matter, form, publication history, or age, making it especially appealing to younger poets. Each year, approximately $2,500 in prize money is awarded, with $500 going to the first-place winner and the rest distributed among top finishers. Last week we heard from finalist Howard Kogan, who shared his poem, “Mourning Becomes Her.” This week we will hear from Hudson Valley Writers Guild members Susan Kress and Will Nixon. First up is Susan Kress. Her poem “Fire-Proof Box” was an Honorable Mention in this years contest. Before she reads her poem, she tells me more about the inspiration of the piece. Susan Kress was born and educated in England and now lives in Saratoga Springs, NY, having taught at Skidmore College for many years. Her poems appear in Nimrod International, The Southern Review, New Ohio Review, Salmagundi, New Letters, South Florida Poetry Journal, Valparaiso Poetry Review, Third Wednesday, Gyroscope Review, La Presa, and other journals. The next poet up to the mic is Will Nixon who will read his poem “Orpheum.” Will Nixon is the author of the poetry collections, “My Late Mother as a Ruffed Grouse” and “Love in the City of Grudges.” With Michael Perkins he is the co-author of “Walking Woodstock: Journeys into the Wild Heart of America's Most Famous Small Town.” He has also written “The Pocket Guide to Woodstock.” He now lives in Kingston, NY. Will Nixon has been writing about Woodstock for decades, including a column in the Woodstock Times, and two popular books--Walking Woodstock, and The Pocket Guide to Woodstock, all in collaboration with writer Michael Perkins, who died in 2022. So when Will suggested we hike Overlook Mountain together to talk 'history,' I knew he'd have much to reveal. On today's Kaatscast: join us for a history hike, with Will Nixon. --- From Atlas Obscura: "Overlook Mountain House: The Skeletal Remains of a Catskills Hotel That Still Welcomes Visitors" Here's a link to the May-June 1976 edition of The Conservationist, featuring Bill Newgold's article, "My Grandfather and the Mountain" Many thanks to our sponsors: The Mountain Eagle and Briars & Brambles Books Kaatscast is also made possible by a grant from the Nicholas J. The Dawgman interns - Jack McCauley and Intern Emeritus Luke Mounger - are back with their own spin on how the Washington Huskies will do in 2023, and they are going to break down a number of the position groups. Today they tackle the running backs room, one that is losing a lot of production with Wayne Taulapapa's graduation, but they also have some veterans returning with Cameron Davis and Richard Newton, as well as a number of transfers. Will Nixon moved last year from Nebraska, and UW picked up two more transfers in Daniyel Ngata from Arizona State and Dillon Johnson from Mississippi State. Jack and Luke start with the recent transfers and what they should bring to the mix, and then work their way toward the backs already on the roster. Then the guys talk about some of the other newer additions, starting with true freshman Tybo Rogers. Without knowing the specifics of Rogers' situation and why he isn't practicing right now with the Huskies, both Jack and Luke proceed like he will be available for UW once the season starts. Will he play more than four games in 2023? How will the coaches like to use him? And what about sophomore Sam Adams? After giving their initial thoughts on the players they expect to play this fall, they go more in-depth on how they think the room as a whole will be used. Will the coaches try and find a 1000-yard rusher? Will they go more by committee? Will they be transparent when looking to spring their running backs in the passing game? And how much will pass protection factor into playing time? To finish up the podcast, Jack and Luke create their own pecking order and expectations for this year compared to last season. The Washington Huskies took the field for their first day of fall camp under sunny skies and 70 degree temps. The guys from Dawgman.com were there and following the two-hour practice, they sat down to put a bow on what they saw. They discussed how efficient the offense looked and how Michael Penix Jr. looked like he was in mid-season form. Following that, they took a look at the tailbacks and discussed the battle between Cameron Davis, Dillon Johnson, Will Nixon, Sam Adams, Daniyel Ngata and Tybo Rogers and who looks like the most-ready to take over for Wayne Taulapapa. Johnson was getting his first significant reps since arriving in the spring. He definitely looks the part, but two of the guys felt that Davis had set himself apart from the rest and is the clear favorite to start at the tailback position. They then turned their attention to the wide receiver group and discussed how players like Germie Bernard and Denzel Boston would likely be starting at several programs in the country, but both are likely to see limited targets this fall with Rome Odunze, Jalen McMillan and Ja'Lynn Polk demanding a lot of attention. Throw in three talented freshmen and the Huskies are in great shape for the forseeable future in the receiver corps. Moving over to the defensive side of the ball, the guys talked about the move of Voi Tunuufi to EDGE and how he looked along with the rest of the room, including Bralen Trice and Zion Tupuola-Fetui, Lance Holtzclaw and Milton Hopkins Jr. They also looked at the depth along the defensive line and linebacker and gave an early look at the secondary where Elijah Jackson and Jabbar Muhammad look to be the leading candidates to man the corner spots once the season gets underway in September. Now that spring ball has concluded, it's time to look back at what we saw during the 15 practices, looking in-depth at each position group. Today, the guys from Dawgman -- Kim Grinolds and Scott Eklund -- take a look at the running backs. Washington lost a good one in Wayne Taulapapa following the 2022 season, but luckily they do return the man who shared carries with him, Cameron Davis. Davis looked the part of a starting tailback during the spring and he seems firmly entrenched as the starter heading into the second half of the offseason, but make no mistake, with players like Dillon Johnson, Daniyel Ngata, Richard Newton, Sam Adams, Aaron Dumas, Will Nixon and Tybo Rogers, he'll be challenged all the way up until Washington's first game against Boise State on September 2nd. Ngata, a transfer from Arizona State, has shown some flashes, but some nagging injuries kept him in a yellow jersey for much of the spring. Johnson was very much in the same boat, showing up for the second half of spring, but only taking part in two or three practices before suffering an injury that kept him on the sidelines and doing rehab for the final two weeks of camp. The guys focused on the depth chart heading into the second half of the offseason and also talked about some of the youngsters who are just now starting to get the opportunity to show what they can do. In addition to Davis' exploits, both felt that Nixon and Adams had very good springs and talked about how the coaches have raved about their positive contributions. They also noted that Rogers looks like he could be a gamebreaker very early in his Husky career. Coming out of Bakersfield High School, the 5'11", 200 pounder struggled with some injuries, but he is back to full health and showed his explosiveness several times during the spring. Could Rogers make himself valuable enough to the 2023 team to burn his redshirt? The answer to that is still to be determined. Our guest today is Kenny Ryan, host of another great history pod, Abridged Presidential Histories with Kenny Ryan. Abridged Presidential Histories Podcast with Kenny Ryan launched its first episode at the end of March, 2020, and has progressed through the American presidencies chronologically. If you have listened to Abridged Presidential Histories, you already know that it includes narrative episodes with a lot of amusing factoids told with humor in solo narrative form – I think you all know I like that sort of thing – and some very interesting interviews with historians who are expert in the relevant presidencies. We had a wide-ranging conversation, and covered a lot of interesting stuff, including: The changing reputations of Jackson, Grant, JFK, and LBJ. Presidential histories take about 50 years to settle down, because they need to be written by people who were not politically aware as they happened. Should Martin Van Buren get more credit for "Jacksonian Democracy?" Jackson should get more credit for his handling of the Nullification Crisis. What president would Kenny like to have as a friend? Surprising answer! Who was the biggest party animal among the presidents? Should our politicians spend more time drinking and playing cards? Who were the greatest First Ladies? The influence of Dolly Madison and Lady Bird Johnson. Did young Kenny meet Lady Bird on a field trip? Austin's moontowers. Who was the most overrated president? The revival of Calvin Coolidge's reputation on the political right. What presidents would you invite on a pub crawl? Will Nixon be rehabilitated? Is journalism really the "first draft of history"? And much more! Jack on Twitter: @TheHistoryOfTh2 Kenny on Twitter: @APHpodcast [Abridged] Presidential Histories with Kenny Ryan (website) ...and on Apple.
The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - got together ahead of the Arizona-Washington game to break down the main storylines, but it's hard to get past the biggest one of all; these defenses are bad. To start the show, they talked about how Arizona should attack a wounded UW defense, licking their wounds and trying to limp through the next two games before a much-needed BYE week shows up. They are especially banged up in the secondary, which makes the recent news of Cameron Williams redshirting all the more curious. They talk about that, as well as what we might expect to see from a defensive backfield that will unveil their seventh different lineup in as many weeks. They also talked about the defensive front and why UW had to rely on true freshman Jayvon Parker and what the future looks like in that position. But most importantly, they talked about Arizona quarterback Jayden de Laura and what Washington has to do in order to get him off his spot and behind the chains. After a quick break, that led them right into the main point in trying to limit de Laura; get out to a sizable lead, and force de Laura into situations where he needs to push the ball downfield. As it has been shown so far this season, when he feels like he's got to get the 'Cats back in the game, that's when he can make mistakes when extending plays. The guys also talk about the interesting decision by Arizona Head Coach Jedd Fisch to hire former Washington, USC, and UCLA assistant coach Johnny Nansen to be his defensive coordinator. And with Arizona's run defense statistically one of the worst in all of college football, the UW offensive game plan seems clear; run, run, run, and then let Michael Penix Jr. play-action off of those runs. But who will be UW's leading ballcarrier? Wayne Taulapapa? Cameron Davis? Richard Newton? Will Nixon? Sam Adams? It will be interesting to see who emerges, and it may be more than one. They also talk about the role the tight ends could play in a game plan like this, and also delve into an important question about game mechanics; if UW wins the toss, should they take the ball? This may be one of the few games where going on the offensive from the start is the right tactic to take. As the 1972 primary season heats up, California Governor Ronald Reagan has his sights set on the White House, but he has to slay numerous dragons before he gets there: Richard Nixon, George Wallace and the sitting President of the United States, George Romney, not to mention the Democratic heir-apparent, Robert Kennedy. Will Nixon run? How will Wallace, running an insurgent racist campaign from the sidelines, affect the race? Who is bugging who, and why? Will the explosive matter of busing in Boston be the decisive issue? A long chain of political intrigues and scandals leads up to a fateful White House meeting that may decide the election--and America's future. Learn a little bit about Okanogan Highlands Alliance and a lot about the grouse of the world, with special focus on the grouse species that inhabit Okanogan County, WA, with Dr. Michael Schroeder. Also, join Jack, the Nature Detective, as he explores the Okanogan Highlands in this story for kids of all ages: “Look! A chicken!” Jack squawks. His little sister laughs, claps her hands, and hollers, “Let's collect the eggs!” But Jack frowns, and says “Wait, hold on. It can't be a chicken, that doesn't make sense...” Jack and his family have just crossed a grassy field to get to the edge of a creek. They are looking for animal footprints in the new snow on an early winter day, and have just been startled by a heavy-bodied bird clattering away across the field. The bird didn't go far, and it really didn't fly very high. By Jack's estimation, it only flew “about three cars high.” “Where would a chicken come from? I don't see any houses. Chickens need houses, and roosts, and nest boxes.” Jack gasps and his eyes get big, “Mom! Are there wild chickens? Or is this someone's lost chicken? Or... is that not a chicken?” Jack thinks hard, “Time to collect clues. Nature Detective is on the case.” This bird is smaller than the chickens that he knows from his grandma's house. But the chickens he has seen fly three cars high, just like this bird. Jack thinks, “maybe it's a baby, and that's why it's small. But... why would a baby chicken wander off on its own?” Jack has recently conducted a study of his grandma's chickens and this is what Jack knows about chickens: They can be lots of different colors. They eat seeds and bugs. They lay eggs, unlike bats, that have live birds. Some chickens grow feathers right over their eyes so they can't see. The chicken facts that Jack knows sort of fit with the mystery bird, but it's just too weird to see a chicken out in the wild. The family follows in the direction that the bird went, trying not to scare it again. Jack stops and puts his binoculars to his eyes. He scans the branches of some trees along the creek. He scans the snow. He stops. “There it is!” Jack whispers. His mom, dad, and sister all put their binoculars to their eyes and aim the lenses where Jack is looking. There is a bird there, walking awkwardly right on top of the snow. “How does he do that?” Jack wonders. They can see that this is not a chicken. It is speckled, with bright yellow eyebrows, and it's tail is too pointy to be a chicken. It could be a relative of a chicken. Suddenly the bird disappears. “Where'd he go? That's not a chicken!” They decide to leave the bird alone, since winter is a hard time to be a wild bird. When Jack gets home his dad pulls up their favorite website - Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Jack likes this website because he can search for birds by shape and color! It doesn't take long for him to find a whole bunch of chicken-shaped birds with yellow eyebrows. He thinks his mystery bird was a grouse - but which one? Jack reviews his clues: a grassy habitat, smaller than a chicken, speckled, yellow eye brows, pointy tail, walking on top of the snow. “A sharptail grouse!” Jack hypothesizes. How can he know for sure? For more clues about whether Jack's guess might be correct, and to learn all about the different types of grouse that live in the Okanogan, Washington and the world, check out this podcast episode, Grouse of the Okanogan, with Dr. Michael Schroeder.
