It's Baton Rouge: Out to Lunch

In years past, formal dining rooms were used for Sunday dinner or holiday get-togethers, opportunities to cook a traditional meal, served on fine china, leisurely eaten among family or friends over a glass of wine. Today, estate sales are jam-packed with barely-used china no one wants because in most modern households meals are often fast-food or grabbed from the to-go counter and holiday meals are often catered and sometimes served on paper plates. So, what do you do if you are a homeowner with an underutilized formal dining room? Well, not so long ago Mauree Brooksher was in such a position when she and her husband bought a 50-year-old home with a traditional formal living room. Uncertain what to do with it, Mauree turned to social media for ideas. There, she found a blog showcasing a formal dining room converted into a mahjong room, with beautiful pictures of the tables and tiles. Mauree was hooked. Today, Mauree and her business partner Stephanie Politz, own and operate Mahjong Rouge, a club of sorts that offers mahjong classes and hosts tournaments to promote the game in the Capital Region. Founded in 2024, Mahjong Rouge has taught 1,300 students the tile-based game that dates back to the mid-1800s in China. Now, the game has become so popular that Mauree and Stephanie recently launched Mahjong New Orleans. What constitutes “fun” changes over time and is different in each culture, each community, and each family. Technology has greatly impacted the ways we entertain ourselves and interact with others. From radio to television to games played on our computers, technology is constantly evolving and therefore changing our lives in new and different ways. What hasn’t changed is the simple pleasure and joy of being in the company of others. People with a strong sense of community just feel better, leading to greater emotional resilience and higher life satisfaction. Mahjong is an old game with an enduring purpose of gathering family or friends around a table for an evening of fast-paced skill and cunning. By teaching mahjong classes in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Mauree and Stephanie are broadening people’s appreciation of Chinese culture and offering new opportunities for fun and community. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard. In this episode of Talk of Fame, Kylie Montigney talks with Annie Scherer! Annie Scherer merges her love of rock ‘n roll classics with her passion for alternative music to produce her own unique sound. Her evocative lyrics and haunting melodies have been heard live from New York to Tennessee.  In May 2025, Annie had the honor of performing at the 40th Annual Harvard Mayfair in the heart of Harvard University. She also celebrated her Chinese American heritage with her performance at the CMP gala in New York, NY and the Boston International Asian Music Festival. Annie is currently gearing up to release her EP this fall.  In 2023, Annie was the runner-up in Lightning 100's Music City Mayhem competition in Nashville, which had 430+ entries. The finale included a performance at 3rd & Lindsley, where the five remaining artists battled it out live. First and second place were determined by voters and judges, including some of Nashville's top music industry members. Following the competition, Annie performed at the annual festival series, Musician's Corner in Nashville. She played the festival again on the main stage in 2024. Annie's single, "Everywhere I Go (Everybody's the Same)" earned her the #1 spot on aBreak Music, the number one music platform for independent artists, in August 2023. The song was aired internationally via iHeart Radio, and received press coverage throughout the nation.  Annie released her first full-length album “Garden Bed” in March 2021. The album features previously released singles, "Andy Warhol," "Take Me Places," and "After Rain," along with six brand new tracks. Annie wrote and produced all the songs. Garden Bed showcases her skills as a composer and multi-instrumentalist, performing the trumpet, piano, guitar, and ukulele, while arranging string quartet scores for songs like "Kaleidoscope" and "Ashamed." The album was widely praised by American Songwriters, the Times Union in Albany, NY, and NYS Music. A month after its release, Annie was voted the best local musician in New York's Capital Region according to readers of the Times Union.  In 2020, three of Annie's songs, including "Kaleidoscope," "After Rain," and "Roses and Lies" received honorable mentions at the international and notable songwriting competition, SongDoor. "After Rain" was selected for special recognition. Annie was awarded the 2018 Producer's Choice for the 'Celebration of Music' PBS special in Troy, NY, hosted by Ethan Bortnick. She won a trip to LA where she was taped performing "Andy Warhol."    Annie's musical career began at age six, when she started classical piano lessons. She devoted 12 years to classical performance. At seven, she wrote her first song, a holiday tune that she sang for a two-person audience: her mom and music teacher. By age 12, Annie had taught herself guitar, and started gigging and writing more seriously.  In addition to her musical aspirations, she is a visual artist and practices with charcoal portraits. She is also a fashion model with Rune Models.Listen in as we discuss Annie's  journey and her new music. Welcome back to Purple Posts, a podcast about the memorable, funny, and sometimes just strange moments in the history of women's hockey. On this episode, host LJ is joined by Elisha Côté, TIG's Ottawa Charge beat writer, to talk about the Ottawa Alerts, an early 20th-century women's hockey team in Canada's Capital Region, with some diversions into what it would be like to play hockey in a skirt, why Ottawa has a bad track record with sports team names, and trying to solve the mystery of a trophy's namesake dentist.Sources for this episode include:https://todayinottawashistory.wordpress.com/2022/03/12/the-ottawa-alerts/https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ottawa-alert-a-tribute-to-women-who-helped-break-the-ice-a-century-ago-1.7015481https://teams.geegees.ca/tradition/alertscuphttps://hockeygods.com/images/22333-Ottawa_Alerts_1923_LOHA_Champions___Women_s_Ice_Hockey_Historyhttps://thehockeynews.com/womens/other-news/ottawa-swept-first-international-womens-hockey-serieshttps://ottawatourism.ca/en/connect-ottawa/evolution-ottawas-professional-womens-hockey-leaguehttps://www.historicalsocietyottawa.ca/publications/past-presentations/women-on-ice-ottawa-s-ownIf you like the show, please subscribe and leave us a five-star review. Discover why character is the leader's most important quality in this powerful Father's Day sermon from our "Leaders Who Make a Difference" series. Through the inspiring story of Elisha from 2 Kings 4, learn how gifting can get you to the top, but only character can keep you there. In this biblical leadership lesson, we explore five essential character traits that prevent power from corrupting leaders: cultivating simplicity, maintaining gratitude, speaking truth in love, caring for hurting people, and relying on God's power instead of your own. Whether you lead a corporation, a family, or simply influence friends, these timeless principles will transform your leadership approach. Join us as we uncover how the prophet Elisha maintained his integrity despite incredible power and influence, earning the title "man of God" even after 15 years of leadership. This sermon offers practical wisdom for Christian leaders, fathers, and anyone seeking to develop godly character in positions of influence. Perfect for Father's Day reflection and leadership development, this message challenges viewers to examine their own character before God's throne. Don't miss the powerful story of resurrection that demonstrates true servant leadership in action.
