In this episode of Talk of Fame, Kylie Montigney talks with Annie Scherer! Annie Scherer merges her love of rock ‘n roll classics with her passion for alternative music to produce her own unique sound. Her evocative lyrics and haunting melodies have been heard live from New York to Tennessee. In May 2025, Annie had the honor of performing at the 40th Annual Harvard Mayfair in the heart of Harvard University. She also celebrated her Chinese American heritage with her performance at the CMP gala in New York, NY and the Boston International Asian Music Festival. Annie is currently gearing up to release her EP this fall. In 2023, Annie was the runner-up in Lightning 100's Music City Mayhem competition in Nashville, which had 430+ entries. The finale included a performance at 3rd & Lindsley, where the five remaining artists battled it out live. First and second place were determined by voters and judges, including some of Nashville's top music industry members. Following the competition, Annie performed at the annual festival series, Musician's Corner in Nashville. She played the festival again on the main stage in 2024. Annie's single, "Everywhere I Go (Everybody's the Same)" earned her the #1 spot on aBreak Music, the number one music platform for independent artists, in August 2023. The song was aired internationally via iHeart Radio, and received press coverage throughout the nation. Annie released her first full-length album “Garden Bed” in March 2021. The album features previously released singles, "Andy Warhol," "Take Me Places," and "After Rain," along with six brand new tracks. Annie wrote and produced all the songs. Garden Bed showcases her skills as a composer and multi-instrumentalist, performing the trumpet, piano, guitar, and ukulele, while arranging string quartet scores for songs like "Kaleidoscope" and "Ashamed." The album was widely praised by American Songwriters, the Times Union in Albany, NY, and NYS Music. A month after its release, Annie was voted the best local musician in New York's Capital Region according to readers of the Times Union. In 2020, three of Annie's songs, including "Kaleidoscope," "After Rain," and "Roses and Lies" received honorable mentions at the international and notable songwriting competition, SongDoor. "After Rain" was selected for special recognition. Annie was awarded the 2018 Producer's Choice for the 'Celebration of Music' PBS special in Troy, NY, hosted by Ethan Bortnick. She won a trip to LA where she was taped performing "Andy Warhol." Annie's musical career began at age six, when she started classical piano lessons. She devoted 12 years to classical performance. At seven, she wrote her first song, a holiday tune that she sang for a two-person audience: her mom and music teacher. By age 12, Annie had taught herself guitar, and started gigging and writing more seriously. In addition to her musical aspirations, she is a visual artist and practices with charcoal portraits. She is also a fashion model with Rune Models.Listen in as we discuss Annie's journey and her new music. Whether you lead a corporation, a family, or simply influence friends, these timeless principles will transform your leadership approach. Join us as we uncover how the prophet Elisha maintained his integrity despite incredible power and influence, earning the title "man of God" even after 15 years of leadership. This sermon offers practical wisdom for Christian leaders, fathers, and anyone seeking to develop godly character in positions of influence. That part of upstate New York is not cosmopolitan and the nearest immigration court is out near Buffalo, but it has seen plenty of horrific ICE actions against foreign born residents. Immigrants in the Albany area tend to be from Africa and the Middle East and they are terrified, he said. They aren't coming to English classes, are afraid to go to the supermarket or to legally required meetings with immigration officials for fear of being plucked off the streets and whisked out of the country. There are things that native born Americans who don't like the Stephen Miller-Donald Trump deportation policies can do. That includes sending laundry, shaving and mentrual supplies to Risse to distribute and witnessing-recording-and intervening in ICE actions around the area.

Thom Francis reintroduces us to longtime local poet and open mic host Don Levy. Don was the featured reader at the Albany Poets Presents series at Restaurant Navona in 2017, where he shared his poems, told stories about his childhood, and answered questions from the audience. For this segment, Thom asks Don about one of the poems he read that night and some other issues of the day. — Don Levy has been part of the Albany poetry scene since 1988 when he first read at the QE2 open mic. He has read at various venues and events in the area, including The Albany Public Library, Poets in the Park, the Poets Speak Loud series at McGeary's, and The Social Justice Center. He has hosted a number of readings over the years, the first being at The Albany Art Gallery on Jefferson Street, to his last, a featured reader / open mic series called "Live From the Living Room," a straight-friendly reading held at The Pride Center of the Capital Region. Don was one of the editors of Open Mic: The Albany Anthology., a fantastic book that featured work from the poets who frequented the local open mics in the mid-90s. He published 2 chapbooks with local artist Kevin Bruce: How Green Was My Big Eden, a collection of gay fantasy poems, and Super Queer Poet Saves the Day. On January 18, 2017, Don read his poem "Mike Pence Goes to Hamilton" at the Albany Poets Presents event at Restaurant Navona in Albany. In our conversation we talk about where the idea for that poem came from, recent online outrage over major companies supporting LGBTQ+ causes, "wokeness," and using poetry as social commentary.

St. Paul had a female traveling companion but we never hear about her; women suffering at all times of their lives from menstrual cramps to menopause are told by untrained doctors that it's in their heads, and even when mice are the subjects of medical experiments, they are almost always male. Long accustomed to taking a back seat and suffering in silence, women are increasingly speaking up for better treatment at the hands of medicine. Two of them from different generations, Abby Lorch, a UAlbany student, and Liz Seegert, a long-time health journalist talk about what should be done — and their despair that Health Secretary RFK will do it.Abby Lorch is a 21-year-old UAlbany student graduating with a journalism degree and a law and philosophy minor. Have you ever asked, “What am I supposed to do with my life?” You're not alone. In this message, Pastor Rex shares how discerning your calling is less about choosing a perfect career and more about becoming the person God created you to be. Through Romans 12 and other Scriptures, he explains how God often guides us not with a lightning bolt, but through the steady pull of character, gifting, passion, and personality. Whether you're a student wrestling with your future, a mom wondering if what you do matters, or someone considering a career change, this sermon will help you understand that God does have a purpose for you—and He wants to guide you step by step. Does your work really matter to God? Many of us will spend 40% of our lives working — but have we ever stopped to ask what God thinks about our jobs? In Part 1 of our brand-new series Work Matters, we'll discover that honest and noble work is actually a partnership with God. Work isn't a curse — it's part of our calling! Join us as we unpack what Scripture says about work (John 5:17, Genesis 2:15, Colossians 3:23, and more) and why your job — no matter what you do — is sacred when you do it for the Lord. We'll also talk about how God uses work to build our character and shape our lives for His purposes. If you've ever wrestled with work-life balance, finding your calling, or surviving tough workplaces, this series is for you. Julia Joern has lived in Round Top since 1999. Her background includes architecture, design, and public relations. She purchased the building that houses the restaurant in 2019, initially for a boutique company that organized public and private programs, and was the host of 'Hudson Valley Work of Mouth', a radio show on WGXC/90.7 FM interviewing creative people throughout the Catskills, Hudson Valley, and Capital Region. She loves working with creative people who know how to make 'something' from basic materials. Chef Henning Nordanger is a native of Bergen, Norway. Escoffier-trained, he gained experience working in large hotel restaurants and mountain resorts throughout Norway. A quarter of a century after arriving in the United States, he worked in New York City in restaurants and as a private chef. He moved to Sullivan County in 2006 and after a stint as a carpenter, opened and ran his first restaurant. Henning's Local (Sullivan County) between 2012-2024. He has developed long-time relationships with many regional, sustainable agricultural businesses throughout the Catskills and the Hudson Valley. 'Tractor Dan' Hartquist, a fruit and vegetable farmer originally from Columbia County, moved to Round Top once he bought a house in Greene County. Purely by chance, he met with Julia and Henning, and the rest is history! There is a wonderful collaboration between Henning and Dan selecting what to grow to enhance the menu in the restaurant. Using organic practices, they continually try new produce yet need to balance the new with some of their standard fare. If there is extra, they package offerings that can be purchased retail. But their produce is always picked the same day so everything is at its peak of flavor.. Learn about the history of this restaurant, the backgrounds of the individuals involved, and how they create a menu from what the garden produces throughout the year Your taste buds will waken hearing about their eggplant parmesan tomato soup, and tomato salads, Hosts: Tim Kennelty and Jean Thomas Guests: Julia Joern, Henning Nordanger, and Dan Hartquist Photo by: Julia's Local Production Support: Linda Aydlett, Deven Connelly, Teresa Golden, Taly Hahn, Tim Kenelty, Amy Meadon, Xandra Powers, Annie Scibienski, Eileen Simpson, Robin Smith Resources
