Discover why character is the leader's most important quality in this powerful Father's Day sermon from our "Leaders Who Make a Difference" series. Through the inspiring story of Elisha from 2 Kings 4, learn how gifting can get you to the top, but only character can keep you there. In this biblical leadership lesson, we explore five essential character traits that prevent power from corrupting leaders: cultivating simplicity, maintaining gratitude, speaking truth in love, caring for hurting people, and relying on God's power instead of your own. Whether you lead a corporation, a family, or simply influence friends, these timeless principles will transform your leadership approach. Join us as we uncover how the prophet Elisha maintained his integrity despite incredible power and influence, earning the title "man of God" even after 15 years of leadership. This sermon offers practical wisdom for Christian leaders, fathers, and anyone seeking to develop godly character in positions of influence. Perfect for Father's Day reflection and leadership development, this message challenges viewers to examine their own character before God's throne. Rosemary Armao talks in this week's chapter of her podcast On the Brink with Dan Butterworth the executive director -- very busy director of RISSE (Pronounced RISE). -- a small Albany non-profit dedicated to helping and supporting immigrants and refugees in the Capital District. That part of upstate New York is not cosmopolitan and the nearest immigration court is out near Buffalo, but it has seen plenty of horrific ICE actions against foreign born residents. Immigrants in the Albany area tend to be from Africa and the Middle East and they are terrified, he said. They aren't coming to English classes, are afraid to go to the supermarket or to legally required meetings with immigration officials for fear of being plucked off the streets and whisked out of the country. There are things that native born Americans who don't like the Stephen Miller-Donald Trump deportation policies can do. That includes sending laundry, shaving and mentrual supplies to Risse to distribute and witnessing-recording-and intervening in ICE actions around the area.
What does it take to lead when everything seems to be falling apart? In 2010, 33 miners were trapped half a mile underground with little hope of survival. Their story of rescue hinged on one crucial factor that made all the difference... Join Pastor Rex as he kicks off our new series examining one of God's most effective leaders - the prophet Elisha. Living in a time of moral chaos under King Ahab and Queen Jezebel's reign, Elisha was called to step up and make a difference when his nation desperately needed godly leadership. In this powerful message, discover: -What it truly means to courageously answer God's call -The importance of burning bridges behind you -How loyalty and teachability prepare you for greater influence -The balance between strength and emotional intelligence in leadership -Why God may be calling YOU to step up right now Whether you're already in a leadership position or sensing God's call to greater influence, this message will challenge and equip you to make a difference in your sphere of influence.

Thom Francis reintroduces us to longtime local poet and open mic host Don Levy. Don was the featured reader at the Albany Poets Presents series at Restaurant Navona in 2017, where he shared his poems, told stories about his childhood, and answered questions from the audience. For this segment, Thom asks Don about one of the poems he read that night and some other issues of the day. — Don Levy has been part of the Albany poetry scene since 1988 when he first read at the QE2 open mic. He has read at various venues and events in the area, including The Albany Public Library, Poets in the Park, the Poets Speak Loud series at McGeary's, and The Social Justice Center. He has hosted a number of readings over the years, the first being at The Albany Art Gallery on Jefferson Street, to his last, a featured reader / open mic series called "Live From the Living Room," a straight-friendly reading held at The Pride Center of the Capital Region. Don was one of the editors of Open Mic: The Albany Anthology., a fantastic book that featured work from the poets who frequented the local open mics in the mid-90s. He published 2 chapbooks with local artist Kevin Bruce: How Green Was My Big Eden, a collection of gay fantasy poems, and Super Queer Poet Saves the Day. On January 18, 2017, Don read his poem "Mike Pence Goes to Hamilton" at the Albany Poets Presents event at Restaurant Navona in Albany. In our conversation we talk about where the idea for that poem came from, recent online outrage over major companies supporting LGBTQ+ causes, "wokeness," and using poetry as social commentary.
We've all said it: “I love my job, but the people…” The truth is, navigating a toxic or dysfunctional workplace can test your faith like few other things. In this final message of our Work Matters series, we explore what it looks like to represent Jesus in the hardest environments—when coworkers are difficult, integrity is rare, and your values are constantly challenged. Looking at the life of Daniel, we'll see how one man stood firm, shined brightly, and made a difference—even in a hostile setting. This message is filled with practical encouragement for anyone trying to follow Jesus at work, especially when the atmosphere is anything but Christlike. Whether you're dealing with petty office drama or outright hostility, this teaching will help you live faithfully, stay spiritually grounded, and see your workplace as one of your greatest mission fields. St. Paul had a female traveling companion but we never hear about her; women suffering at all times of their lives from menstrual cramps to menopause are told by untrained doctors that it's in their heads, and even when mice are the subjects of medical experiments, they are almost always male. Long accustomed to taking a back seat and suffering in silence, women are increasingly speaking up for better treatment at the hands of medicine. Two of them from different generations, Abby Lorch, a UAlbany student, and Liz Seegert, a long-time health journalist talk about what should be done — and their despair that Health Secretary RFK will do it.Abby Lorch is a 21-year-old UAlbany student graduating with a journalism degree and a law and philosophy minor. She plans to attend Albany Law School starting in fall 2025. She has always been interested in women's issues, and reporting on the university community and the Capital Region has given her insight into how these issues affect her neighbors.Liz Seegert is an award-winning, freelance journalist with more than 30 years experience writing for magazines, newspapers, radio and TV news, digital, PR, corporate, government, non-profit, and educational institutions. Her work has appeared in national, regional and local consume and trade outlets. Have you ever asked, “What am I supposed to do with my life?” You're not alone. In this message, Pastor Rex shares how discerning your calling is less about choosing a perfect career and more about becoming the person God created you to be. Through Romans 12 and other Scriptures, he explains how God often guides us not with a lightning bolt, but through the steady pull of character, gifting, passion, and personality. Whether you're a student wrestling with your future, a mom wondering if what you do matters, or someone considering a career change, this sermon will help you understand that God does have a purpose for you—and He wants to guide you step by step. Does your work really matter to God? Many of us will spend 40% of our lives working — but have we ever stopped to ask what God thinks about our jobs? Join us as we unpack what Scripture says about work (John 5:17, Genesis 2:15, Colossians 3:23, and more) and why your job — no matter what you do — is sacred when you do it for the Lord. We'll also talk about how God uses work to build our character and shape our lives for His purposes. If you've ever wrestled with work-life balance, finding your calling, or surviving tough workplaces, this series is for you. The resurrection is either the greatest hoax in history—or the greatest truth the world has ever known. In this Easter message, we look at the story of Thomas, a man who refused to believe until he saw Jesus for himself. Julia's Local is a garden--to-table restaurant serving rustic American cuisine withulia's Local is a garden--to-table restaurant serving rustic American cuisine with a Scandinavian twist. Located in Round Top (Greene County), NY. After a multi-year building renovation, the restaurant was opened about four years ago. Three of the key forces behind the restaurant joined Nature Calls: Conversations from the Hudson Valley to talk about the restaurant and how they bring fresh produce to their patrons every day. Julia Joern has lived in Round Top since 1999. Her background includes architecture, design, and public relations. She purchased the building that houses the restaurant in 2019, initially for a boutique company that organized public and private programs, and was the host of 'Hudson Valley Work of Mouth', a radio show on WGXC/90.7 FM interviewing creative people throughout the Catskills, Hudson Valley, and Capital Region. She loves working with creative people who know how to make 'something' from basic materials. Chef Henning Nordanger is a native of Bergen, Norway. Escoffier-trained, he gained experience working in large hotel restaurants and mountain resorts throughout Norway. A quarter of a century after arriving in the United States, he worked in New York City in restaurants and as a private chef. He moved to Sullivan County in 2006 and after a stint as a carpenter, opened and ran his first restaurant. Henning's Local (Sullivan County) between 2012-2024. He has developed long-time relationships with many regional, sustainable agricultural businesses throughout the Catskills and the Hudson Valley. 'Tractor Dan' Hartquist, a fruit and vegetable farmer originally from Columbia County, moved to Round Top once he bought a house in Greene County. Purely by chance, he met with Julia and Henning, and the rest is history! There is a wonderful collaboration between Henning and Dan selecting what to grow to enhance the menu in the restaurant. Using organic practices, they continually try new produce yet need to balance the new with some of their standard fare. If there is extra, they package offerings that can be purchased retail.
