In this episode, Jonathan Wier is joined by James and Cody for a hilarious and increasingly unhinged exploration of King of the Hill fan theories. It starts off sane but quickly descends into beautiful madness—what they call the King of the Hill conspiracy iceberg. The crew tackles questions like: Why did Luanne give up auto repair? (Possible diagnosis: drain damage.) Did Peggy suffer brain damage after a skydiving mishap? Did Cotton Hill fake his death and flee to Japan? Why does Bobby own a Bart Simpson doll if The Simpsons is just a TV show in that universe? And is Dale exterminating bugs as a lifelong vendetta against his dad? Along the way, they spiral into tangents about Rocky villains, microwave-sized shoes, the myth of Peggy's size 16.5 feet, and a serious debate over who's hotter on Modern Family. If you love King of the Hill, weird fan theories, and grown men bonding over animated sitcoms, this episode is pure comfort food with a propane aftertaste.

In this special episode of Consider the Constitution, Dr. Katie Crawford-Lackey explores the evolving role of America's First Ladies with Anita McBride, former Assistant to President George W. Bush and Chief of Staff to First Lady Laura Bush, and co-author of "Remember the First Ladies: The Legacies of America's History-Making Women." Though the Constitution never defines this role, First Ladies, from Martha Washington to today, have wielded significant influence in shaping policy, diplomacy, and national identity. McBride shares fascinating insights about how these women served as essential partners to presidents while carving out their own legacies - from Dolley Madison saving White House treasures during war to Lady Bird Johnson advocating for civil rights in the hostile South. Drawing from her extensive research for her book, McBride reveals how these remarkable women used their "automatic powerful platform" to advance the nation, even when they themselves lacked constitutional rights.

What a fun time I had at the Writer's Loft holiday book festival in Hudson, MA! It was great to meet so many talented children's book authors and learn about their latest projects.  Janet Costa Bates was there celebrating her picture book "Time for Bed, Old House" - a sweet story about a grandpa who helps his grandson settle down for a sleepover. Janet shared how meaningful it was when a mom told her that her biracial son saw himself represented in the book's main character. Representation in kids' books is so important, and it's awesome to see more diversity. I also chatted with Helen Kampion about her book "Rolling on Down the Line" - a fascinating look at Lady Bird Johnson's 1964 civil rights tour of the South. Helen and her co-author were inspired by Lady Bird's courage in making this trip despite death threats, in order to promote the new Civil Rights Act. Sounds like an empowering story for young readers. Over at the "Cryptid Academy" table, author Howard Woolke told me all about his fantasy series featuring mythical creatures like golems, genies, and sphinxes attending a secret school. I love the idea of blending real-world mythology into an engaging school story.  And Ellen Cohen shared the premise of her mystery novel "Searching for Lucky Number 3002" - a boy trying to uncover the truth about his donor-conceived background. Such an interesting topic to explore through fiction and give kids a window into different family structures. So many great books and wonderful authors at this event. I'm already looking forward to reading more from these talented writers and hopefully having them back on my "Reading with Your Kids" podcast soon! Lady Bird Johnson is best known today as the wife of Lyndon Baines Johnson, 36th President of the USA between 1963-69. However, there was much more to her life than simply the role of ‘First Lady'. In this episode of Factual America, Matthew Sherwood takes a deep dive into Lady Bird Johnson's life with Dawn Porter, director of new documentary film, The Lady Bird Diaries.  It's 1963. Liz Carpenter, Lady Bird's Press Secretary, suggests that she records her ‘thoughts and experiences' on a tape recorder. Lady Bird agrees and borrows one from Carpenter's son. She never looks back. Over the next six years she will record 123 hours-worth of material about her day-to-day life. As Dawn tells Matthew, Lady Bird's entries are ‘detailed and meticulous': she had a degree in journalism and was a very good note taker. She was also, Dawn says, very disciplined, observant, and conscious of her place in history. This consciousness made Lady Bird an invaluable counsellor for her husband. So much so that in an age where there was no line of presidential succession, Lady Bird was even referred to as ‘Mrs Vice President'. The Lady Bird Diaries describe Lady Bird as ‘one of the most influential and least understood First Ladies in [American] history'. Matthew and Dawn discuss the detail of why that is so. They also explore her abilities as a strategist, how Lady Bird changed the way the White House works, and her political and public independence even from her husband. The picture they draw is of a woman who was more than equal to the challenge of the difficult age in which she lived, and which she so carefully recorded. For a fuller picture of Lady Bird, the Johnson White House and 60s America, this episode is a must listen. Watch the episode at https://factualamerica.com “She both did and didn't accept the limit on her authority that society was giving her. She didn't demand credit for her contributions but didn't stop making them... her priority was getting things done.” – Dawn Porter

The restaurant industry cursed her at the time, but Lady Bird Johnson served up some tough love in the 1960s that's arguably still paying benefits to the business today. She moved the nation's fight against highway litter and garish roadside billboard from the margins to the mainstreams, forcing the public and the industry to change some decidedly litterbug ways. In the process, the genteel Texan with a core of steel forever changed the role of First Lady, from a passive plus-one to her spouse, to an activist wielding the power of her position to pursue a cause. Join us on this week's episode of Restaurant Rewind for a look at an often overlooked development that some regard as the spark that led to the environmental consciousness we see in the industry today.

DEADLOCKED: HOW AMERICA SHAPED THE SUPREME COURT ABOUT THE SERIES From Emmy® Award-winning filmmaker Dawn Porter, DEADLOCKED: HOW AMERICA SHAPED THE SUPREME COURT is a four-part documentary series that traces the modern history of the Supreme Court and the people, decisions and confirmation battles that have shaped the Court into what it is today. With the Justices under the microscope like never before, DEADLOCKED premieres on SHOWTIME at a profoundly consequential time: Americans are grappling with a Supreme Court drastically remade by former President Donald Trump; the historic confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson; the unprecedented leak from inside the Court's chambers; and the aftershock of the landmark Dobbs decision's effective reversal of Roe v. Wade. To understand this critical moment, the series travels back to the 1950s when Chief Justice Earl Warren heralded an era of progressive legal decisions spurred by the nation's changing values, paving the zigzagging path the country is still walking today. DEADLOCKED reveals how the Supreme Court's ideological balance has shifted over the years to reflect the hopes - and fears - of American citizens, exploring the interconnectedness between the Court's and the nation's future. HER NEXT PROJECT Award-winning, acclaimed filmmaker Dawn Porter. Over the years Dawn has emerged in the entertainment industry as a leader in the art of storytelling; directing and producing critically acclaimed projects that have impacted generations of people from all walks of life. Dawn's recent feature film with ABC News Studio, "The Lady Bird Diaries," is a groundbreaking all-archival documentary film about the former First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson, who is one of the most influential and least understood First Ladies. The feature film looks at the 123 hours of personal and revealing audio diaries that Lady Bird recorded during her husband's administration. These audio diaries showcase how Lady Bird was an astute observer of character and culture, as well as a savvy political strategist. Dawn highlights Lady Bird's crucial role in Lyndon B. Johnson's presidency and brings viewers behind the scenes of one of the most tumultuous and consequential periods in modern American history. "The Lady Bird Diaries" was met with critical review at the 2023 South By Southwest Festival and went on to receive The Louis Black 'Lone Star' Award. The film is produced by Trilogy Films for ABC News Studios with Dawn serving as the director and producer. "The Lady Bird Diaries" will exclusively premiere on Hulu on November 13, 2023.

This week, we're covering Lyndon B. Johnson's wife, "Lady Bird" Johnson, an incredibly intelligent and successful woman in her own right. Not only was she the *first* President's wife to earn well over $1,000,000 before becoming First Lady, she also prevented our nation's highways from growing littered with billboards & rubble, and inspired Lyndon's presidential career. Without her, he might never have run in the first place.   We split this into a two-parter to make 2 hours of history a bit less daunting :). Part 1 includes Lady Bird's early life, LBJ's (crazy) courtship, and the JFK assassination. Robert Jarred and David Begneaud, board members of Scenic Lafayette, joined Discover Lafayette to discuss their mission to keep Lafayette beautiful and free of clutter and trash. They are both active and engaged volunteers. Scenic Lafayette is a citizen-based advocacy group committed to preserving and enhancing the natural and built environment of our community. through: Policy, Partnerships, Public education, and Projects. Founded in 2014, Scenic Lafayette promotes beauty as a valuable asset for those who live, visit, and conduct business in Lafayette. Its vision is to embrace calm, cleanliness, and the natural landscape of public and private spaces. Scenic Lafayette is one of 49 state and local affiliates of Scenic America, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing the visual character of our country's roadways, countryside, and communities, and inspired by the Lady Bird Johnson and the Highway Beautification Act. One big recurring problem we discussed was the proliferation of illegal signs that are posted in public spaces. Our guests jokingly recounted that "I buy golf carts" is the newest offender in our community as you see the signs posted throughout the area. The signs are typically posted in the middle of the night so David and Robert spoke of regularly getting up at 3 a.m. to start taking down the illegal signs. You can help by calling 311 to report litter and illegal signage. Let's clean up our neighborhoods! If you see a broken utility/phone post be sure to report it by calling 311 or 337.291.8800. AT&T will soon be digging up, fixing or replacing broken telephone cable boxes throughout Lafayette Parish. Lafayette City Councilwoman Liz Webb Hebert took it upon herself to address this issue....it has blown up across the state as other communities say they have the same problem. David Begneaud says, "The issue is being fixed and is coming around! This is important, as our visitors enter Lafayette they see this blight. Visitors who are considering moving here pay attention to these things." The issue of blighted green utility provider boxes found in public spaces throughout the community was also discussed and our guests reported the communication provider was responsive to requests for help in addressing the problem. Lafayette experiences a high level of trash being strewn on its streets and our interstate interchanges. Trash flies out of the back of citizens' pickup trucks as well as municipally-contracted trash pickup trucks. David Begneaud said he has heard Matt Stuller quote statistics several times, saying,"South Louisiana has the highest per capita of open-bed pickup trucks in the nation." David said further, "When you go down the interstate, whenever you are the contracted person to cut the grass, you have to pick up the litter first, and you see litter bags full of trash every 25 to 50 yards filled with trash for miles as they prepare to cut the grass on interstate medians." Municipalities can actively control the amount of blight that is tolerated. As David Begneaud said in a shout-out to Youngsville LA after discussing his awareness of how U. On February 29, 1968, Lady Bird Johnson hosted the first–and last–White House Fashion Show. The fashion show, intended both to highlight the fourth largest industry in the United States and to promote domestic tourism, inadvertently became one of the many PR missteps of the Johnson administration, as it occurred in the midst of the Tet Offensive. Presidential histories take about 50 years to settle down, because they need to be written by people who were not politically aware as they happened. Should Martin Van Buren get more credit for "Jacksonian Democracy?" Jackson should get more credit for his handling of the Nullification Crisis. What president would Kenny like to have as a friend?
