Rick writes "When I was younger I lived in Mississippi in a very little town called Poplar Creek. Its very remote and there is nothing there but open farm land. I now live in Asheville, NC I sometimes go back to MS to see family from time to time. When I do go back I always drive past where I use to live and where I first saw a creature. My family had about 80 acres of land most of it was woodland and swamp area. I never saw the creature until I was older at the age of 15. All of my life my Grandfather use to tell me and my brothers about a wild man and woman that lived in the area and was known to have been living in the area many years. I do know that land we had was very old my Grandfathers Grandparents owned the land and it was passed on over the years. If there were any activity going on over the years when I was younger I had no knowledge of any happenings. Everything changed the summer I turned 13. It was late June and summer vacation was in full effect. Living in this area everyone has a garden of some type. My family's garden was kind of big because we grew most of our food along with hunting. My Mom and Dad went out of town for a the weekend to visit some of my Dads family. During this time I staid at my Uncles house who also lived on the land we had. That Monday afternoon when my Dad came back home he took a walk in the garden and some plants were torn out of the ground and watermelons were busted open and just left in place but were eaten. Other veggies were also picked and parts were on the ground not fully eaten also. My Dad was pissed! He called me and my Cousins over to the garden and questioned us about it. We told him no it was not us and that we did not do any of this. My Grandfather saw my Dad getting on to us about this so he came over and saw everything that had happen. I will never forget my Granddaddy face as he said " It was not the kids. I know who did this". My Granddaddy told us kids to go play as he explained to my Dad about what had happen. My mom and Uncle grew up on the land so I believe they knew but refused to say anything. Come to find out years before my Granddaddy had problems with the wild man and wild woman getting into his chicken coop until it got to the point he quit raising chickens. My Mom and Dad got married when i was 4 or 5 so he missed out on that time and had no idea that even happened. After my Dad heard the story he was in shock but did not believe it until the next morning when more watermelons and other fruits were completely gone. Our two apple trees were picked bare and branches were broken along with our peach trees with peaches that were half eaten or were stepped on. My Dad noticed that our black-eyed peas were being picked and eaten as he would find half eaten hulls or just the hulls on the ground. That night my Dad called his 3 brothers and they came to our house along with my Granddaddy and uncle and they had a meeting in our Livingroom and we the kids had to go play in our rooms. Wes I'm not joking with this my Uncles were locked and loaded Mississippi rednecks were in full effect. LOL.. My Granddad and uncle ( his son) were in the loft of our barn. Two of my Dads brothers got on top of my Dads work shop and my Dad and his other brother were posted up in the field in the back of his old truck. I do not know what time it was but it was late and guns were going off. I jumped up out of bed and ran to a window to see what was going on. After a bit my Mom was pacing back and forth wondering what had happen. The family walked in and each one was shook up. I think because they saw IT.. They told me to go to bed and don't come back out. I could hear them talking and one of my Uncles saying This is not true There is no way that is real I cant believe it .. They staid the night and in the morning everyone went into the woods looking for what they may have seen the night before. around 11 am the men came back with a lot of questions on their face. None of them talked about it and I was told to not talk about this ever to no one. From then on there were no more encounters until the spring of 1993. I was riding the school bus home and was sitting at the back of the bus on the right hand side and my friend Joe was sitting across from me on the left hand side. We passed a bridge that had a small open field on the side of it. This field met the edge of the land my family owned . There it was squatted down drinking water from his hand and in the split 3 seconds Joe and I saw the creature we both turned to each other asking DID YOU SEE THAT! I said what the Hell was that and Joe straight out said Bigfoot!!! a few moments later i was off the bus and was running into tell my Mom. At this time my Dad and Grand Dad had both passed so now this news really shook up my Mom. It was not until a few months later my mother sold the land and we moved away." We will wrap up with Timothy Renner to discuss his new book, I Have Never Minded the Loneliness: Hermits and Their Stories. What compels a person to leave behind society, forsaking family, friends, and the comforts of modern life to live in solitude? The hermits of the 19th and early 20th Centuries are as fascinating as they are mysterious. These enigmatic figures often became the focus of public interest, with newspaper stories turning them into local legends, folk heroes, and symbols of a life apart. Within these pages, you'll discover the extraordinary lives of hermits who defied convention: John Stink, rumored to have died and risen again–more than once; William Woodruff, whose long vow of silence followed a broken heart; Brusher Mills, the serpent-hunter who sold his own snake-oil remedies; and Truman "Commodore" Downs, who claimed Mars as his homeland. Meet Adolphe-Julian Fouré, the reclusive priest who carved strange tales into Brittany's coastal rocks, and Alice Grace, who made her home in an old bacon box, telling fortunes. From William Pester, the desert-dweller who may have inspired Nat King Cole's Nature Boy, to the Old Leather Man, a wandering enigma clad in patchwork leather, and O.B. Joyful, the hermit some call America's first hippie–these stories, and many more, reveal the complex lives of individuals who chose to live apart from the world.

The story of self-made millionaire Tony Quinn is fairly well-known, but there's more to the tale. Quinn made his fortune through pet food and confectionary but is a keen motorsport driver and the visionary behind Highlands Motorsport Park in Central Otago. Originally released in 2016, his book ‘Zero to 60' is getting a facelift, ‘Zero to 60 and Beyond' sharing new stories in ten new chapters. Quinn told Mike Hosking he was inspired to write down his life story by his grandfather. “My Grandfather, who was Irish, got involved in the IRA when he was a young fella, and he had a fantastic, interesting life,” he said. “And when he died, there was nothing written down. And so there was no official record, if you like, of his life.” Quinn's book started off as a personal project, a record for future generations as opposed to an official biography. “I was just gonna write my story so that the generations behind me could read all about why I did the things that I did, and that's how it started.” It wasn't until he found a freelance author to write his story out properly that the idea of publishing it came into being. “One thing led to another,” he said. ‘Zero to 60' became a number one best seller in New Zealand, flying off the shelves and going through several reprints, and after seven years, Quinn decided to revise it. “There has been so much happened in the last seven years." David Waldman guides us through the ides. The big story today concerns Israel, which has been the big story over the lifetime of just about anyone reading this. How do Americans who are Jewish separate their religious, cultural, historical and family identities from Israel's political, military and moral decisions? I don't know! So, rather than me Presbyteriansplaining it all to you, let me pass on these links: My Grandfather the Zionist, and The Shoah after Gaza. Being in Congress is about more than just getting elected, you'd think. But for Republicans, there really isn't much more than the paycheck left to come in for, and even that isn't enough for many. Alexander Yackov Smirnov picked up $600,000 the year he fed false info to the FBI, but that's hardly his only source of income. Honest Don might get his lifelong wish, to die of old age before going to prison. President Joe Biden doesn't need guilty verdicts to win, but he sure could use a little more than he has at the moment. Voters still don't have a clue about how much worse Trump's second term would be.

My Grandfather passed this week, and I believe this is one of the greatest lessons that he taught me. There were years and times when I could not show up, when I was too much in my head, in fear and judgment about my body and my gifts. He taught me to get over that, to "educe" and pull our what was already within me. Danielle and Elizabeth were joined by Melanie Savage, who hails from Ontario, and works with people in need of social services. She's found herself getting assigned to clients who have cats, which is wonderful because Melanie loves feline friends. She finds a connection to her clients through the cats, because who doesn't love talking about cats?! The discussion centered around people in rough situations finding comfort from their cats, and even forgoing treating their own medical needs so they could take care of their cats. Also how cats are easier and usually less expensive than dogs, but yet are still perceptive to their owner's need for closeness. Melanie talked about services for people who may not be able to care for their cats, such as My Grandfather's Cat, a service in Canada that re-homes pets whose owners have passed. She also brought up Community Veterinary Outreach, which supports those individuals who are experiencing homelessness or the risk of losing their housing who have cats, who have dogs, and they provide pro bono veterinary care and also provide some primary health care at their vet clinics. Great news for Ottawans, Melanie is working on opening her own practice soon to support folks with pet loss. The conversation went on, if you ever have a question for Danielle or Elizabeth they'll be happy to answer it. They love cats and people, so question away! If you want to view the transcript, just click on the 3 dots next to the share button under the video. Of course we want to hear from you, we love chatting with pet parents, the more cat stories the better! We dare you to top Danielle and Elizabeth with stories about weird and funny cat behavior! How can we become healers? In these times of disconnection, we all search for sources of healing. One powerful, often untapped source is the healing we can provide for each other. For this conversation, I turned to my long-time medical school mentor, Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen. Rachel is widely known for launching the course The Healer's Art, which has been taught to over 30,000 medical students, including me. Now in her 80s, she has been a guiding light for decades. In this live conversation, we explore deep questions: What is the difference between curing and healing? What is the role of love in doctoring? How is listening a form of healing? Rachel draws from her own life, including the harsh experience of being the only woman in her medical school class and living with chronic illness; while still painful, those experiences helped her understand who she is. In an increasingly complex world, knowing ourselves and finding ways to express love is what this episode of House Calls is all about. (03:40) How Dr. Remen and Dr. Murthy connected through the heart and soul of medicine. (14:01) What is the difference between healing and curing? (16:10) What is a wounded healer? (20:51) What is the role of love in healing? (23:00) How does serving others help the heart and soul? (24:28) How did Dr. Remen find a place she really belongs, and how can we? (30:20) What does it mean to be one of a kind? (34:30) Why love is a blessing for a lifetime. (46:22) What has Dr. Remen learned from her cancer patients about healing? (49:25) How can we be source of healing for others? (54:09) What can help us break away from feelings of despair? For more conversations, visit www.surgeongeneral.gov/housecalls. We'd love to hear from you! Send us a note at housecalls@hhs.gov with your feedback & ideas. To many Americans, Clarence Thomas makes no sense. For more than 30 years on the Court, he seems to have been on a mission — to take away rights that benefit Black people. As a young man, though, Thomas listened to records of Malcolm X speeches on a loop and strongly identified with the tenets of Black Nationalism. This week on More Perfect, we dig into his writings and lectures, talk to scholars and confidants, and explore his past, all in an attempt to answer: what does Clarence Thomas think Clarence Thomas is doing? Voices in the episode include: • Juan Williams — Senior Political Analyst at Fox News • Corey Robin — Professor of Political Science at Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Center • Angela Onwuachi-Willig — Dean of Boston University School of Law • Stephen F. Tracey writes "As a young person I grew up in Northern Oklahoma, My Grandfather owned property that butted up against the Cow Creek water sheds. To provide location it was about 30 minutes from Ponca, 15 Minutes from Pawnee and 15 Minutes from Red Rock. Lake McMurty was about 30 minutes away in the opposite direction from Red Rock. At one point he owned 500 Acres or basically a square mile. Over time he had sold the property off down to 125 acres or what is referred to as a Quarter. The property had 2 good Sized Ponds on it and a Natural Spring that constantly ran towards the water shed with crystal clear water. No One was allowed to hunt on his property, and no one did. He Purchased the land around 1942 or 43. He raised cattle, pigs, Quarter Horses and Welch Shetland Ponies, goats etc... virtually anything he could sell ac the Stillwater Auctions. In the Early 80's he sold off the property. My First encounter was with my brother I was 10 and he was just about to turn 12, we were fishing at a neighbors pond with my dad and sister, my brother nor I was catching anything so we went snake hunting for ring necks and Horned Toads, as we were looking at the ground my brother said to me did you see that tree fall, I heard a dirt slide and my brother said lets go look as he thought he had witnessed an erosion event of a tree falling into a small crevasse from the edge of it, He ran over to the place where it fell, about 50 feet from where we were, screamed and told me to run as we were running back towards the pond, the tree, now looking like a bigfoot was running the opposite direction.

Abraham Josephine Riesman is a journalist who writes often for New York and is the author of True Believer: The Rise and Fall of Stan Lee. Her second book, Ringmaster: Vince McMahon and the Unmaking of America, will be published in March. “You're sure that there's a level of unreality, but you're not sure that it's all fake. There's stuff there that seems either plausible or sometimes you go ‘there's no way you could fake that.' And sometimes you're right, and a lot of times you're somewhere in the middle. It's not as easily distinguished as saying this is fact and this is fiction, this was scripted and this was improvised, whatever. You can't make those distinctions easily, and one of the things I sort of hope comes out of the book—if it has any impact at all—is to try to get us past this false binary of true and false.” Show notes: @abrahamjoseph abrahamriesman.com Riesman on Longform Riesman's New York Magazine archive 16:00 "She Was WWE's First Female Referee. Started in 1938, the Harvard Study of Adult Development represents the longest study on happiness ever conducted. It set out to follow a group of men through every stage of their lives, from youth to old age, to discover what factors lead people to flourish. Here to share some of the insights that have been gleaned from the Harvard Study of Adult Development is Dr. Robert Waldinger, the current director of the project and the co-author of The Good Life: Lessons from the World's Longest Scientific Study of Happiness. Today on the show, Robert explains how the study has affirmed the absolute primacy of relationships in happiness and how to develop the “social fitness” to make and enrich those vital connections. We discuss what the happily married couples in the study did differently, and why happiness in marriage tends to follow a U-shaped curve which hits its low point in midlife. We talk about how the way you were raised helps set a trajectory for your life, but how it's also possible to overcome a rough upbringing to become a transitional character in your family. We also discuss the role that friends and work played in the happiness of the men who participated in the study. We end our conversation with what folks in every stage of development — whether youth, midlife, or older age — should focus on to live a flourishing life.Resources Related to the EpisodeAoM Article: Love Is All You Need: Insights from the Longest Longitudinal Study on Men Ever ConductedAoM article and podcast on how and why to have weekly marriage meetingsAoM Podcast #795: The U-Shaped Curve of HappinessAoM Article: You Don't Have to Be Your Dad — How to Become Your Family's Transitional CharacterAoM Podcast #742: The Power of Talking to StrangersA Eulogy for My Grandfather, William D. WINTER ROSE TALES: Part 1 On today's podcast, we have the first three of our Winter Rose Tales. These tales will feature the gardener, their gardens, and what they do to care for their roses in winter. Elena Williams Suzanne Gilbert Lynn Hunt Elena Williams... a I enjoyed being an elementary school teacher for 20 years and now I have transferred the experience over to teaching mostly adults about roses. I am the 2022 American Rose Guest Editor, A Master Consulting Rosarian, Horticulture and Arrangement judge and the Pacific NW Assistant District Director. I have lived in and grown roses in zone 8B for 11 years. It is a maritime climate that stays relatively warm due to the warm influence of Puget Sound and the Pacific Ocean. I am a member of Seattle RS, Tacoma RS, Puyallup RS and my very local Kitsap County Rose Society. Suzanne Gilbert... My love of roses started as a young girl growing up in Baltimore, Maryland. I went with my parents to Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania and came home with three roses Peace, Tropicana and Chrysler Imperial. After moving to Houston with my family in 1989 I started growing roses more seriously with the help of the Houston Rose Society. I feel that one of the most important factors that I can attribute to growing roses successfully in my area has been the articles in the HRS newsletter, The Rose-Ette and the mentoring I have received from the consulting rosarians when I joined the Society. In 2012 I became a Consulting Rosarian. I enjoy teaching about growing roses and I have given many presentations to gardening groups in the Houston area. I have served on the board of the Houston Rose Society as the publicity chairperson. I am currently serving as the president of the Houston Rose Society. Besides the satisfaction I receive from growing beautiful roses in my garden, roses have helped my meet and connect with so many wonderful people who have become very special friends. Lynn Hunt... I'm not sure when my love of roses started, perhaps before the age of two. My Grandfather had several roses in his Miami garden. I have a photo of me at 14 months stopping to sniff a blossom. Later, one of my neighbors planted a lovely crescent-shaped rose garden in his yard. He was always giving friends a few blooms and I wanted to learn more about how to grow them. So, I joined the Tidewater Rose Society and the ARS in 1979. The rest as they say, is history! I have loved my time as an ARS Consulting rosarian (now Emeritus) and as an accredited Horticultural Judge. You meet so many wonderful people and make lifelong friends as a rosarian. I have been honored to judge roses in England and Australia, and I served on the permanent panel of the Biltmore International Rose Trials. I've written about gardening for about three decades in publications from Fine Gardening and Horticulture to my own award-winning blog, The Dirt Diaries. I've also been blessed to have a wonderful professional career as a writer and broadcast producer. My interest in journalism started early, just like my love of roses. I was interviewing local celebrities at age 9, and snagged an exclusive interview with The Beatles in 1964 when they arrived in Miami to perform on the Ed Sullivan Show. I was 13 at the time, and star reporter of my junior high school newspaper. Writing, roses, and of course, a wonderful family ... A combo that has made my life very sweet. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
The conversation of this hour always rises as an early experience that imprinted everything that came after at On Being. Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen is one of the wise people in our world. She trained as a doctor in a generation that understood death as a failure of medicine. Yet her lifelong struggle with Crohn's Disease and her pioneering work with cancer patients shaped her view of life. Becoming whole, she teaches, is not about eradicating our wounds and weaknesses; rather, the way we deal with losses, large and small, shapes our capacity to be present to all of our experiences. That arresting notion, and the distinction Rachel Naomi Remen draws between curing and healing, makes this an urgent offering to our world — of healing we are all called to receive and to give.--YOU ARE INVITED!A Listening Party.Celebrating the first 20 years of On Being with Krista. All are welcome — bring friends and family.Visit onbeing.org/staywithus to register and learn more.--Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen is founder of the Remen Institute for the Study of Health and Illness and a Professor of Family Medicine at the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University in Ohio. Native Lights: Where Indigenous Voices Shine – Weekly Radio ShowNative Lights is a weekly, half-hour radio program hosted by Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe members and siblings, Leah Lemm and Cole Premo. Native Lights is a space for people in Native communities around Mni Sota Mkoce -- a.k.a. Minnesota -- to tell their stories about finding their gifts and sharing them with the community.Native Lights – Historian Brenda J. Child Responds to the Federal Indian Boarding School System ReportOn today's show, we talk with Brenda J. Child Ph.D. (Red Lake Nation) about the U.S. Department of Interior's recently released investigative report on the Federal Indian boarding school system. Brenda J. Child Ph.D. is the Northrop Professor of American Studies and American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota and was recently awarded a 2022 Guggenheim Fellowship by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. The Department of Interior's 100+ page report is a first step in the U.S. government accounting for and acknowledging the harm done to Indigenous people over many decades. From 1819 to 1969, the United States funded 408 boarding schools for American Indian, Native Hawaiian, and Alaskan Native students. These schools were a means to culturally assimilate Indigenous people and to dispossess them of lands across what are now 37 states.Brenda J. Child is the author of many award-winning books including Boarding School Seasons: American Indian Families, 1900-1940; Holding Our World Together: Ojibwe Women and the Survival of Community; and My Grandfather's Knocking Sticks: Ojibwe Family Life and Labor on the Reservation, which won the American Indian Book Award and Best Book in Midwestern History. Today On the Dogwatch we have an opportunity to talk with Tom Bartels, the former and longtime director of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, which runs both the NAWCC Museum, and Library and Research Center in Columbia, PA. Tom has been a member of the NAWCC for 54 years, and has lectured throughout the world on clocks and horology. He joins us from his home in Nevada and discusses clock and watch collecting, shares tips on how to approach making a collection, describes the NAWCC holdings and jewels of the collection, and relates the story of locating the treasured Engle clock in the back of a barn. Our feature today is the song “My Grandfather's Clock” that was written by Henry Clay Work in 1876.Tom shares with us that the clock in this song is what led to the general public indiscriminately referring to most large clocks as “grandfather clocks” after the song became popular, despite the fact that they are technically known as tall-case clocks.
We now know where Colorado's new 8th Congressional district will be and how the 7 other districts will change. Then, remembering Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jim Sheeler who made it his goal to remember others. Plus, a four-legged strategy to reduce wildfire risk. And Colorado's connection to the song "My Grandfather's Clock."
