In this track we talk with Poukōkiri Whakaaturanga Taonga Kahurangi Goulton about the exhibition of ngā mōteatea in the Kura Tūturu | Real Gold exhibition case for Hōngongoi and Matariki. Kahurangi explains how te reo Māori was originally only transmitted orally and as such Māori crafted and perfected the art of mōteatea. Mōteatea refer to all forms of traditional waiata or songs. These waiata were composed to transmit, retain and celebrate the life, customs and history of Māori. In the case we have the hand written manuscript of a waiata composed by Hinewairoro and collected by Riwai Te Ahu from Ngāti Hinerangi and Ngāti Awa. We can assume this waiata dates back to an earlier time. This waiata has been identified as, A song to incite remembrance in people's hearts. Now that spring ball has concluded, it's time to look back at what we saw during the 15 practices, looking in-depth at each position group. Today, the guys from Dawgman -- Kim Grinolds and Scott Eklund -- wrap things up with a look at the special teams. Record-setting kicker Peyton Henry wrapped up his collegiate career in 2022, so Washington is looking for his replacement. The guys discuss the ongoing battle between two walk-ons -- Addison Schrock and Grady Gross -- and who led coming out of spring camp. Gross handled a vast majority of the kickoffs as a true freshman last season, but neither has kicked a field goal in an actual game, so this battle will likely go through the end of fall camp and maybe even into the season before a winner is determined. At punter, Jack McCallister was a surprise winner of the job last season, but the Huskies weren't completely satisfied with his performance as they went out and grabbed Adam Saul from the JUCO ranks. Both are walk-ons, but there is definitely the potential to earn a scholarship with a good performance this season. As far as the returners go, the guys looked at what Jalen McMillan and Giles Jackson bring at the punt-returner and there will be a battle between those two as well as some of the incoming freshmen, namely Leroy Bryant, who could challenge for a spot as the main punt returner. Kick returner should be a battle between Jackson, Cameron Davis and Daniyel Ngata. Ngata was a solid kick returner at Arizona State and Jackson was established as a very good kick returner at his previous school, Michigan, while Davis split kick return duties with Jackson last season. What will be interesting is to see if Davis is still in the mix as the top kick returner if he winds up being the opening day starter for the Huskies at tailback. At long-snapper, there's no question who the leader is and Jaden Green has become one of the best at his position in the country. On the coverage teams, the guys talk about the man that Kim believes can be a special teams demon for the Huskies this fall as well as some of the other names who will be key factors in not allowing big returns to the opposing kick and punt returners. Now that spring ball has concluded, it's time to look back at what we saw during the 15 practices, looking in-depth at each position group. Today, the guys from Dawgman -- Kim Grinolds and Scott Eklund -- take a look at the running backs. Washington lost a good one in Wayne Taulapapa following the 2022 season, but luckily they do return the man who shared carries with him, Cameron Davis. Davis looked the part of a starting tailback during the spring and he seems firmly entrenched as the starter heading into the second half of the offseason, but make no mistake, with players like Dillon Johnson, Daniyel Ngata, Richard Newton, Sam Adams, Aaron Dumas, Will Nixon and Tybo Rogers, he'll be challenged all the way up until Washington's first game against Boise State on September 2nd. Ngata, a transfer from Arizona State, has shown some flashes, but some nagging injuries kept him in a yellow jersey for much of the spring. Johnson was very much in the same boat, showing up for the second half of spring, but only taking part in two or three practices before suffering an injury that kept him on the sidelines and doing rehab for the final two weeks of camp. The guys focused on the depth chart heading into the second half of the offseason and also talked about some of the youngsters who are just now starting to get the opportunity to show what they can do. In addition to Davis' exploits, both felt that Nixon and Adams had very good springs and talked about how the coaches have raved about their positive contributions. They also noted that Rogers looks like he could be a gamebreaker very early in his Husky career. Coming out of Bakersfield High School, the 5'11", 200 pounder struggled with some injuries, but he is back to full health and showed his explosiveness several times during the spring. Could Rogers make himself valuable enough to the 2023 team to burn his redshirt? The answer to that is still to be determined. Three days ago, Graham Neff sat down with reporters and put his full support behind Brad Brownell while declaring Brownell will be back for a 14th season. That stance is now the target of criticism after Clemson's embarrassing loss to Morehead State in the first round of the NIT. With many wondering whether Neff might walk back some of his comments, or even reconsider his stance on Brownell's return, we provide the full audio of his conversation with a small group of media including Tigerillustrated.com. Also, Myles Murphy and Joseph Ngata were full of nostalgia when they returned to Clemson earlier this week for Pro Day. Both are now reminded of the wisdom Dabo Swinney often dispenses to his players, that the college years will always be the most cherished time of their lives. Ngata stopped short of saying he made the wrong decision in declaring for the NFL, but he did seem to be experiencing some misgivings about the feeling of coming back and no longer being a part of the program. We present the full interviews from Murphy and Ngata after Pro Day.

Indigenous peoples and their respective First Nations are on the frontlines of Mother Earth struggling and resisting against violent forms of colonialism including nefarious manifestations of ecocides, democides, genocides, and the full dominant spectrum of “cides”. With over 77 Indigenous nations on the coastline of Te Ika a Maui, the north island of Aotearoa (New Zealand) and 67% of those territories are marine territories, today's guest discusses a variety of issues including Maori acts of resistance, cultural traditions, being good ancestors, decolonization and reindigenization, and how and why colonial violence perpetrated against Mother Earth are intrinsically crimes committed against Indigenous peoples and their respective First Nations. Today's guest participated in a panel titled “Climate Change – Getting on Board?” on April 21st, 2021 at the Strengthening the Circle: A Native Non-profit Leadership Program which thematically focused on the Rights of Mother Earth. The panelist facilitator is Tia Oros Peters, Shiwi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples and event organizers are Generation Indigenous Ways, Seventh Generation Fund, Artemisia Associates, Wolfstar Productions, and Hopa Mountain. Guests: Tina Ngata is a mother of two from the East Coast of Te Ika a Maui, the north island of Aotearoa (New Zealand) and is a Project Researcher Specialist, Institute of Environmental Science and Research in New Zealand (Aotearoa). Ngata's work involves advocacy for environmental, Indigenous, and human rights. This includes local, national and international initiatives that highlight the role of settler colonialism in issues such as climate change and waste pollution and promote Indigenous conservation as best practice for a globally sustainable future.

After being tasered, pepper sprayed and heavily restrained, Alo Ngata was left face-down in a police cell with an incorrectly-fitted spit hood covering his face. Although police policy required him to be constantly monitored, it wasn't until CCTV footage showed his hands not moving and starting to change colour that officers came to his aid. He died in hospital two days later. The Independent Police Conduct Authority today released its report identifying multiple failures by the officers who restrained Mr Ngata, who was on meth when arrested for assaulting an elderly man in Auckland's Freeman's Bay in 2018. In Episode 7 of the Happen Films Podcast, Antoinette is joined by Tina Ngata (Ngati Porou), advocate for environmental, indigenous and human rights. Tina is based in Tairāwhiti, East Coast, Aotearoa New Zealand, where she’s a busy community leader working for the rights and wellbeing of her whanau/family and community. For many years her blog, the Non-Plastic Maori, documented her journey reducing her personal dependence on plastic, a journey that led to her deepening her understanding of the wider issues of plastics consumption and waste and becoming a prominent activist in that space and beyond. She has spoken for Maori and indigenous rights at the United Nations and in conferences around the world, has published a book of her collected work opposing the continued celebration of colonial history, Kia Mau: Resisting Colonial Fictions, and is continually writing, speaking and protesting for justice for humans and Papatuānuku/Mother Earth. The intention was for this episode to be Happen Films’ contribution to Plastic-free July – Tina being one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s waste resistance heroes – and the idea was to talk about waste within the context of environmental, indigenous and human rights. And we do… but the focus of the conversation turned out to be colonisation – it’s history; it’s day-to-day presence – and what decolonisation might look like. That’s an appropriate conversation to be having at any time and feels particularly resonant right now, within the extraordinary context of this year, 2020, and everything it’s bringing forth to challenge our thinking, our history, our practices and our plans for the future. As Tina says: “Anti-colonialism is not just for indigenous people. Anti-colonialism, anti-imperialism and anti-racism is for everyone – we’ll all get well-being out of deconstructing the ways in which we believe that we have entitlement to each other’s spaces and places and bodies.” We hope you enjoy listening to Tina’s wise and profound words and come away as inspired as we have! ** Follow Tina ** Website: https://tinangata.com Support Tina on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/tinangata Watch Tina’s talk during the Claim the Future webinar (July 2020): https://vimeo.com/440273174 Buy Tina’s book, Kia Mau: Resisting Colonial Fictions (digital download – please koha/gift if you can): https://tinangata.com/2020/06/14/kia-mau-resisting-colonial-fictions/ ** More about Happen Films **  Support our work: https://happenfilms.com/support  Website: https://happenfilms.com  Twitter: https://twitter.com/happenfilms  Instagram: https://instagram.com/happenfilms  Facebook: https://facebook.com/happenfilms See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
