The Fish Tank: Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 9, 2022 69:54

Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep Rob Konrad, the last member of the Syracuse Orange football program to don the university's legendary jersey number 44, enjoyed a standout career that positioned the fullback to be selected by the Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 1999 NFL Draft. Konrad hit the ground running, catching a touchdown pass from Dan Marino in his very first professional game, and went on to play six seasons in Miami, starting 57 games, and blocking for Ricky Williams during his dominant 2002-03 run. Since hanging up his cleats, Konrad has enjoyed a successful career in the finance industry, however a 2015 boating mishap left him fighting for his life in the Atlantic Ocean in an extraordinary act of survival that he has not spoken about publicly in years. Joining OJ and Seth in The Fish Tank, Rob discusses his hometown of Danvers, Massachusetts and its connection to the Salem witch trials (3:56) and fondly reflects upon his relationship with Syracuse's storied 44, as well as his bond with the legends, like Jim Brown, who wore the number before him (6:14). Rob looks back at his 1999 draft class for which he was one of three ball carriers selected (14:40), reveals how nervous he was starting his first NFL game on Monday Night Football at Mile High Stadium against the Denver Broncos (23:10), and shares how Ricky Williams' arrival in South Florida resulted in him becoming a better football player (27:43). Konrad goes on to explain how the diminishing role of the NFL fullback coupled with the sacrifices required by the position compelled him to take significant steps towards his post playing career (32:50), and then provides a detailed account of the 16-hour, death-defying swim for his life (41:28), before wrapping up the episode with The Fish Tank Two-Minute Drill (1:05:10). Contributors to this episode include Sean “DJ Prec” Todd, Alex Bitchatchi, and Dolphins Productions. Troy Nunes Is An Absolute Magician: For Syracuse Orange fans

The Syracuse Orange started fall camp, so after months of subtly mentioning that this was a football show, Steve, Christian, and Andy go full football season preview mode and talk Orange Football for an hour! In this week's edition of the Podcast, the guys talked about... We're talking the Otto-Man Empire and Ottoman Empire. Because it's A HOT ONE. We talk Domes. Because our Dome is a great Dome but somehow a unique Dome. What is the access reporters have to the Orange football team this year? What can we expect out of that coverage this fall? We start with the offensive line and breaking down footage made available by Stephen Bailey. Chris Bleich is now a Center. What does this mean for the rest of the unit? HOMEFIELD APPAREL (Use promo code NUNES for 10% off your first order) We talk Sean Tucker and his less than pleasing performance in the passing game. The tight end room is remarkably thin, and why is that worrisome for the Orange this year? Put Chris Elmore on Paul Giamatti's body. IYKYK What's up with the defensive line? We play “Andy was in Greece, let's watch him react to silly thing!” Join our Discord! Chapter 1: This is the story of how two different kickers used the same strategy to climb from rock bottom to become the best amateur kickers in the country. Lou Groza Award winners Alexis Serna (Oregon State Beavers) and Brad Craddock (University of Maryland Terrapins) came close to quitting for different reasons, but the way they overcame obstacles was the same. These two kickers explain the mindset of “kicking not to miss” and how it almost ruined their promising kicking careers. Chapter 2: This chapter was inspired by a conversation with former Syracuse Orange kicker Cole Murphy in the summer of 2019. In that conversation, Murphy explained that he felt all the best kickers had a “beach bum” like quality to them. The concept became the starting point for this entire podcast series. Are all great kickers like “beach bums”? Had reporter Cole Weinstein uncovered the predictive personality trait that determined whether someone could make it big as an elite college or NFL kicker? We answer those questions with the help of NFL veterans Pro Bowler John Carney (San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints) and Pro Football Hall of Famer Morten Andersen (New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons), whose careers each spanned over two decades in the NFL. Interviews include Alexis Serna (Oregon State Beavers), Brad Craddock (University of Maryland Terrapins), Morten Andersen (New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons), John Carney (San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints), Nate Kaeding (San Diego Chargers), and more. Hello everyone, happy Wednesday -- this is Noles News Now, the latest in Florida State Seminoles sports, presented by Tomahawk Nation. I'm Perry Kostidakis -- let's jump in. More news on the recruiting trail for FSU -- this time in the form of a 2023 linebacker commit, DeMarco Ward out of Duluth, Georgia. A three-star prospect, the Seminoles earned his pledge over conference opponents Louisville, Wake Forest, and Duke as well as the UCF Knights and Memphis Tigers. Ward stands at 6-foot-2, 205-pounds and accumulated nearly 80 tackles (65 of which were solo), three sacks, and an interception last season. In addition to linebacker, he gets reps at wide receiver, as well as playing basketball and running track to complement his gridiron exploits. Ward's ranking doesn't immediately jaw drop -- he's a newly-christened three-star -- but his highlights show an affinity for contact, an ability to diagnose plays, and some impressive flashes of athleticism. He's a nice addition to a 2023 class that's looking to hear to some good news as we get into July -- a month where FSU has the chance to snag several commits, mostly blue-chip. Some major football news in the ACC, with the conference dropping divisions starting in 2023 and instead having teams play three permanent opponents while rotating other programs on the schedule so that each team has the chance to play a home and away game at each member school. That's a benefit not lost on FSU athletic director Michael Alford, who said in a press release that “The new format means our season ticket holders will see every ACC team play in Doak Campbell Stadium over a four-year period.” As part of the new arrangement, Florida State will be facing off against the Clemson Tigers, Miami (FL) Hurricanes, and Syracuse Orange yearly. Why Syracuse? Our sources have said that rather than saddle FSU with a trap game in Georgia Tech each year, FSU lobbied for a matchup that would help expand its geographical footprint as well as present a little bit less of a challenge, given that its two permanent matchups are against two of the bigger names in the conference. For those curious, outside of FSU, Miami's other two permanent opponents are Boston College and Louisville, while Clemson is paired up with Georgia Tech and NC State. FSU track star Trey Cunningham became the second Nole in school history to be named a finalist for The Bowerman — one of three male finalists for college track and field's most prominent individual award. Via FSU, he was the first athlete in NCAA history to run 13.22 or faster nine times in the 110m hurdles and the only athlete to run 7.42 or faster four times in the 60m hurdles.  Of the three finalists, Cunningham is the only athlete to be undefeated against collegians in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Cunningham went 20-for-20 against collegiate competition. That's the major news of today -- you can read up on all of these stories and more on TomahawkNation.com, where you can always stay updated on all the latest things Florida State. D-Fly and Dixie preview this weekend's biggest games, including three Top 20 matchups and Dave Pietramala's return to Homewood Field as the Syracuse Orange take on the Blue Jays. The weekend's biggest game will take place in the Garden State though, when No. 3 Rutgers battles No. 7 Princeton for the glory of the Tots Meistrell Cup, and the fellas sit down with Princeton head coach, Matt Madalon. (NOTE: This game has been moved to Friday at 6 p.m. due to pending inclement weather on Saturday.) They also talk about the return of D-Fly's all-time favorite Netflix series, The Last Kingdom, a fun afternoon of lacrosse in Georgetown, Inside Lacrosse's new Fantasy Lacrosse games and much, much more.  In this week's fantasy sports-inspired Give & Go, D-Fly asks Dixie what are the least interesting topics to bring up to co-workers at the proverbial “water cooler.”
