Brent Axe chats live following Syracuse football's Holiday Bowl bid against Washington State. Brent gauges the instant reaction from Orange fans on landing the Holiday Bowl instead of what seemed to be a more favorable location at the Gator Bowl in Florida. Not only does Syracuse have questions about who will play in the Holiday Bowl, Washington State may not have its star quarterback in the game as John Mateer may enter the transfer portal. Brent also looks at some key players that have decisions to make about opting in or out of the bowl game like QB Kyle McCord, RB LeQuint Allen, LB Marlowe Wax, TE Oronde Gadsden II and more. On their weekly Pitt football mailbag podcast, Post-Gazette insiders Christopher Carter and Stephen Thompson answer reader questions. Among them: Why are coach Pat Narduzzi, QB Eli Holstein and the Panthers ranked a lowly 18th in the latest Associates Press poll despite their 7-0 start? Are the Panthers and ACC in general being disrespected in College Football Playoff conversations? Should the NCAA institute a rule forcing Narduzzi to become more transparent about his team's injury situation? Why has OC Kade Bell's offense struggled so much on third downs? And was the blowout of QB Kyle McCord and Syracuse last week a surprise? Our duo tackles those topics and more.
Brent Axe and Emily Leiker recap Syracuse Football's 26-24 loss to Stanford on Friday night at the JMA Dome on Syracuse football postgame presented by Crouse Health. Brent and Emily breakdown what happened on a key 4th down play that cost Syracuse the game, putting Stanford in position to kick a winning field goal as time expired and discuss what head coach Fran Brown said about that play. Axe and Leiker also discuss the mighty struggles of the Orange offensive line against Stanford and how QB Kyle McCord reacted to that, how the Orange running game can get going after rushing for just 26 yards against the Cardinal and provide injury updates for a few depth chart players who did not dress for the game. Brent Axe and Emily Leiker breakdown Syracuse football's 38-22 win over the Ohio Bobcats. The good news? The Orange offense was humming under Ohio State transfer QB Kyle McCord, who threw for a career-high 354 yards. Trebor Pena had 3 touchdowns, Oronde Gadsden II returned to the field with 108 yards and a score and Georgia transfers Zeed Haynes and Jackson Meeks both made big catches. The bad news? The Syracuse defense got gashed for 255 yards rushing by the Bobcats and lost linebacker Marlowe Wax to what looks to be a serious foot injury. Kyle McCord was shown the door by Ryan Day and the Ohio State football program after a disappointing end to last season that saw the Buckeyes lose to arch rival Michigan for the third straight season. McCord has since taken his talents to Syracuse for the 2024 college football season. However, new information has come to light that McCord didn't quite go chasing a bag in the transfer portal. Apparently Nebraska offered McCord more than twice the amount of money as Syracuse did. Now the question is, did McCord turn down the money because he thought Syracuse was a better chance to win given the fact that they play in the ACC? Or was he afraid to go up against Dylan Raiola in the preseason? FOX Sports' lead college football analyst Joel Klatt discusses the latest transfer portal moves including QB Kyle McCord's move to Syracuse and what it means for Ohio State's QB situation for next season. He discusses why the sport failed Texas QB Maalik Murphy by putting him into a terrible position of having to enter the Transfer Portal before the Longhorns play in the College Football Playoff. Following a court ruling over NCAA transfer rules, Klatt discusses the potential issues that could be coming in the future if players are allowed to freely transfer as many times as they like without repercussions. Klatt also reacts to Chip Kelly's proposal for a radical overhaul of the sport. He concludes the show by giving his thoughts on Nick Saban's decision to hire a former Michigan assistant coach just weeks before Alabama is set to face the Wolverines in the Rose Bowl. Andy recaps a newsy weekend as coaches were hired and players committed through the portal. We also take an in-depth look at two teams in the SEC: Ole Miss and Georgia (0:00-6:52) Intro: Is Lane Kiffin the New Portal King? (6:53-7:44) QB Kyle McCord commits to Syracuse (7:45-8:59) 5-Star QB Dylan Raiola Visits Nebraska (9:00-12:39) Former Indiana HC Tom Allen Hired as Penn State DC (12:40-13:59) Florida State Hosts Two QBs in the Portal (14:00-18:38) Congrats to the Bowl Winners! (18:39-43:27) Zach Berry from OM Spirit Joins to talk Ole Miss (43:28-1:06:31) Jake Rowe from Dawgs HQ joins to talk Georgia (1:06:32-1:07:36) Conclusion Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin spent his weekend sending cryptic tweets and getting good news from transfer portal recruiting targets. But before a deep dive into the new-look Land Shark defense, we hit some news from around the country. Former Ohio State QB Kyle McCord committed to Syracuse. Five-star QB recruit Dylan Raiola -- still a Georgia commit -- visited Nebraska. Former Indiana head coach Tom Allen was hired as Penn State's defensive coordinator. Florida State hosted transfer QBs Cam Ward (Washington State) and DJ Uiagalelei (Oregon State) this weekend. Meanwhile, Ole Miss got a commitment Sunday from South Carolina transfer receiver Juice Wells, and that came after Ole Miss got commitments from edge rushers Princely Umanmielen (Florida) and Tyler Baron (Tennessee). If defensive tackle Walter Nolen (Texas A&M) -- On3's top-ranked transfer portal prospect -- commits to the Rebels, they'll have retooled most of their defensive line through the portal. Zach Berry of On3's OM Spirit joins to discuss how active Ole Miss has been in the portal and what the Rebels expect from their high school signing class on Wednesday. Next, Jake Rowe of Dawgs HQ joins to discuss a variety of fascinating Georgia topics: Why have so many Bulldogs entered the transfer portal? Who will the Bulldogs target in the portal? Will QB Carson Beck return for 2024? What is the Georgia side of the potential flip of QB Dylan Raiola to Nebraska? Want to watch the show instead? North Carolina's Drake Maye and Notre Dame's Sam Hartman are opting out of their teams' respective bowl games. But that news got blown away Monday night by the chatter out of Georgia and Nebraska that Dylan Raiola, the No. 1 quarterback prospect in the class of 2024, is considering flipping from Georgia to Nebraska with a little more than a week left before National Signing Day. Sean Callahan of On3's Husker Illustrated joins to discuss what a Raiola flip might mean for coach Matt Rhule and the Cornhuskers. Sean also explains how that could affect Nebraska's recruitment of Ohio State transfer QB Kyle McCord, who was visiting Lincoln on Monday. Next, our special financial correspondent Tim Shamer joins to explain some of the dollar amounts in the transfer market. Are good QBs really worth $1 million? How much does a serviceable offensive lineman cost? Which positions aren't worth what players are asking? After that, Chris Vannini of The Athletic joins to help Andy pick the first six bowl games of the season. There are five on Saturday and one next Monday. Are you ready for some vibes-only picks? The Buckeyes signal caller was the starter all year, had the edge on the 2024 starting job, why did he leave Ohio State Football? The Ohio State Buckeyes came up short by one score, in one game, on one late game drive from playing in the Big 10 Championship and likely earning a spot in the College Football Playoff with a chance at a National Championship. Instead, the Buckeyes will watch their rival Michigan Wolverines go for a title. Meanwhile, Ryan Day and his Buckeyes prepare to face Missouri in the Cotton Bowl. Will they be motivated to play in that game? And who will play quarterback? Kyle McCord just announced he's entering the transfer portal after a pretty good season in Columbus. Throwing an interception on the potential game-winning drive at Michigan will cost him his job. An 11-1 record doesn't sit well with Buckeyes Nation when that "1" is against Michigan. Speaking of the transfer portal, many players are entering and it could see a record number of names. Some interesting players form the Big 10 have already entered and we will look at that. The latest episode of Land-Grant Holy Land's flagship podcast is here! Join LGHL's Josh Dooley and Chuck Holmes as they discuss Ohio State football, recruiting, and much, much more! Come for the hot takes, stay for the warm ones. On this episode of ‘Hangout in the Holy Land,' Josh and Chuck attempt to predict this week's initial College Football Playoff rankings, before discussing a less-than-stellar outing from their Ohio State Buckeyes. At the top of the show, the Hangout boys banter about where teams should be ranked in the CFP, as well as which players should be in the Heisman conversation. The guys disagree on rankings, but only because Josh believes that the CFP selection committee will do whatever it wants in the last year of the four-team playoff. Conversely, the hosts have nearly identical Heisman thoughts. Chief among them is the fact that Marvin Harrison Jr. should be considered one of the current favorites. As for Ohio State's win over Wisconsin... Well, at least the Buckeyes have Marv, TreVeyon Henderson, and Jim Knowles. The Hangout guys were disappointed in OSU's ‘other' guys, but a win is a win. However, if Ryan Day's squad is to eventually hoist a CFP trophy, they will need much better play from QB Kyle McCord, as well as his offensive line and supporting cast. On this postgame Buckeye Talk after Ohio State's 49-20 win over Michigan State, Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means take postgame questions from text subscribers. As a reminder, those questions usually aren't "Why is Ohio State so good?" So the Buckeyes are 6-0 heading into their off week and very possibly playing like the best team in the country. But the majority of questions were centered around three topics: With Miyan Williams out Saturday and TreVeyon Henderson leaving the game after hitting 100 yards with a minor injury, should OSU fans worry about the running back health? And how important are the running backs to a championship OSU season? Why doesn't Ryan Day let the second-team offense, specifically backup QB Kyle McCord, do more? Why are the cornerbacks continuing to struggle at times, what can be fixed there, and which opponents could take advantage of what looks like the weak spot in the defense? Other topics covered include Mike Hall Jr, the explanation for Ohio State's pick-six, and kickoffs going out of bounds. Again, Ohio State played very well and should inspire a lot of confidence in fans, but this is what was on the minds of the Buckeye Talk faithful halfway through the regular season. Elite Seekers Ep 36 - “THE ARCH MANNING SWEEPSTAKES!” On episode 36, @TheBenEby talks about the craziness surrounding the high school class of 2023 QB Arch Manning's recruitment process. How does being the nephew of Eli and Peyton Manning help young Arch along the way? We also saw a particular SEC coach take the Instagram approach and make Arch his ONLY FOLLOW. Many more shenanigans clearly will be on their way and Elite Seekers is here for it all. We also touch on college football's top performing underclassmen and the opportunity that Ohio State's 5-star true freshman QB Kyle McCord has in front of him with CJ Stroud sitting this week out with a shoulder injury. Ohio State certainly needs someone to right the ship, can it be Kyle McCord? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
