It's a debate being argued across school boards, politics, and family dinner tables: whether educators should be including gender identity and sexual orientation in their k-5 curriculums. At least 5 Canadian provinces and seven US states now require the inclusion of LGBTQ topics, while more conservative states like Florida have banned any mention of such language altogether. Conservative lawmakers and parents argue that teaching about gender identity is inappropriate and confusing for children who are too young to understand the complexity of this subject and its potential life altering consequences. Educators, driven by liberal ideology, are ignoring parents' wishes and using their classes to push their own political beliefs on impressionable youth. Progressives believe that as the number of children who identify as transgender and non-binary rises, teachers have an obligation to dispel misconceptions about gender and provide inclusive, safe environments for all students, especially the most vulnerable. Contrary to what some right-wing groups claim, you cannot alter or influence a person's gender identity through education, while banning its teaching altogether will cause emotional and mental distress to our most vulnerable youth. Jonathan Butcher is the Will Skillman Fellow in Education at The Heritage Foundation. Education Freedom Report Card
Jonathan Butcher, the Will Skillman Fellow in Education at The Heritage Foundation. He is the author of Splintered: Critical Race Theory and the Progressive War on Truth, joined WMAL's "O'Connor and Company" radio program on Tuesday to discuss Heritage Foundation's newly released "Education Freedom Report Card." The Heritage Foundation is out with a new Education Freedom Report Card. This comprehensive report ranks states on how well they empower parents to make the best education choices for their children and how well the state uses taxpayer dollars for education. Florida Gets an A+: Families looking for a state that embraces education freedom, respects parents' rights, and provides a decent return on education spending investment for taxpayers should look no further than The Sunshine State. Arizona Is Giving Florida a Run for Its Money: Arizona came in second place. The state has a recently expanded, now-universal education savings account program. Idaho followed third, thanks in large part to a strong ROI for taxpayer dollars and high levels of transparency for parents. New Jersey, New York, and DC Get Failing Grades: They came in 49th, 50th and 51st on the report card, respectively. These states and the District of Columbia did little to provide transparency, accountability, or choice to families. Bottom Line—Heritage Setting High Bar for Education Freedom: This report card is intended to motivate state lawmakers to achieve and maintain education freedom. Our goal is that this annual ranking of states will not only inform parents, grassroots, and policymakers on what their states do well but also highlight where they need improvements.https://www.heritage.org/educationreportcard/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/JM_Butcher For more coverage on the issues that matter to you, visit www.WMAL.com, download the WMAL app or tune in live on WMAL-FM 105.9 FM from 5-9 AM ET. "Coming out of the pandemic, the widespread dissatisfaction with the way that colleges, as well as traditional district public schools, handled education is palpable. We see it in surveys, we see it in parents moving their kids from assigned schools and creating learning pods and choosing private schools and finding other options for them," said Jonathan Butcher, the Will Skillman Fellow in Education, Center for Education Policy, at The Heritage Foundation. He wrote a recent commentary, "Don't Reform Higher Education. Rebuild It." Hour 2 of The Dawn Stensland Show: Jonathon Butcher—the Will Skillman Fellow in Education at The Heritage Foundation—joins the show to discuss two of his most recent editorials, “Parents Choose Schools to Protect Their Rights. This Makes School Choice the Future of Education.” and “Don't Reform Higher Education. Rebuild It.” Butcher also analyses the repercussions of the Biden Administration's plan to forgive student loan debt. The California State Senate has passed legislation that will heavily regulate the fast-food industry throughout the Golden state. The bill now awaits Governor Gavin Newsom's signature. On his podcast, Joe Rogan criticized the federal government for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic—suggesting that the best way to assure it never happens again is to vote for limited-government Republicans like Ron DeSantis. Ben Shapiro responded to Podcast Movement “cancelling” him from their Dallas, Texas conference. Shapiro joked that he is “dangerous” according to the left—though, all he did while attending the conference was sign autographs and take pictures.
