Recorded June 2023. 26 years ago, we saw one of the most memorable moments in wrestling history. The Undertaker threw Mankind off the top of the Hell in a Cell and created one of the most significant moments not only in the Monday Night War era, but in the history of wrestling, period. After WWF purchased WCW in 2001, it was all downhill from there, we just didn't know it yet. King of the Ring took place in June 2001 and it was the last "WWF-only" PPV until December's Vengeance PPV later that year. Shane McMahon - the "owner" of WCW - took Kurt Angle to the limit (!), Booker T made his WWF debut and injured Stone Cold Steve Austin - hell, there were a ton of injuries on this show - an anticlimactic main event, Vince McMahon nowhere to be found, no celebration for the winner of the King of the Ring until the next night, and much more. The IDM crew kicked back and reviewed the first 1993 King Of The Ring featuring Bret Hitman Hart vs Bam Bam Bigelow and Hulk Hogan defending his WWF title against Yokozuna! Kick back, put Peacock on and let us do all the work.
Classic episode recorded June 2021. On June 23, 1996, the World Wrestling Federation invaded the MECCA Arena in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for their annual King of the Ring pay-per-view. This would be the first year where only semifinals and the finals took place on the actual pay-per-view, with more stacked matches than ever before. It certainly was, to date, the greatest WWF King of the Ring card ever. There certainly were seeds planted well before the Federation would head into the Attitude Era more than a year later, and many of them were seen during this show. So join us and dive deep into the 1996 King of the Ring! -- Follow us on Twitter [@_piccone] [@VaughnMJohnson] [@theshooterspod] You can subscribe to The Straight Shooters on the following platforms: [Apple Podcasts] [Google Podcasts] [Spotify] [iHeartRadio] [Amazon] [Audacy] [TuneIn Radio] [Pandora] [Stitcher] [Spreaker] [Player FM] and wherever else you get your podcasts! Wrestling was in a weird place in 1994. Having said that, this may have been one of the weakest King of the Ring events of all time, but we did get one of the greatest matches under 4 minutes ever and a glimpse into the future of the WWF as Diesel takes on Bret Hart. The main event of this show was also one straight out of the Over the Hill Club as Jerry "The King" Lawler and "Rowdy" Roddy Piper face off in a comedically bad match that even bordered on "boring" at times. At least we've got some interesting news as Hulk Hogan joins WCW, there are 2 Undertakers, Smoky Mountain Wrestling is struggling to stay afloat, and nutty Herb Abrams is planning on running UWF in a HUGE building in Las Vegas, Nevada! Nope, not a typo. We really got back-to-back King of the Rings, this time the 2001 version. Although it should be called "Kurt of the Ring" because by God does everyone's favorite Olympian carry the show. Two matches against former members of the Brood, and a hellacious match against Shane McMahon that included 2 insane spots. We also have senile Stone Cold facing down a couple of Chris' with the World Title on the line, and some pretty decent filler to complete the card. Very fitting that for 97, we go to '97. This edition was about as up and down as a PPV you could have. We have some absolute dream matches, but then you get Crush and Jerry Lawler taking up 20 minutes of match time. We also get Shawn Michaels showing his ass, ref shenanigans, the Nation at it's most powerful, and the crowning of Triple H. It's another bonus show! This time, we're going back to the summer of 1998 where WCW pulled an about face, having the undefeated United States Champion, Goldberg, take on Hollywood Hogan for the WCW World Title in the main event of Nitro. We discuss whether this was a panic move and whether it paid off or turned out to be dumb in the long run. There are quite a few other matches on this show with most not amounting to much. WCW is heavily building up the main event at Bash at the Beach with DDP and Karl Malone making their presences felt throughout the night. Scott Hall makes a surprise return to run defense for Hogan halfway through the night. Buff Bagwell address the crowd after nearly breaking his neck and becoming paralyzed. There's also so much more! The WWF was at the peak of its popularity and had all timer moments every week. Last week featured 3 of the biggest moments of all time including the reveal of The Higher Power as Mr. McMahon and Stone Cold Steve Austin becoming CEO of the World Wrestling Federation. Now that Stone Cold is the new CEO, he takes a visit to the WWF Headquarters at Titan Towers! While there he meets a lot of corporate “suits” and makes a lot of people drink some Steveweisers! As Austin is away, Mr. McMahon and The Corporate Ministry book the entire show. Vince and Shane McMahon are getting ready for a 2 on 1 handicapped match with Stone Cold at WWF King of The Ring 1999 so they need to try out some stipulations for that match. They book a Dog Pound match with Mr. Ass vs Road Dogg, a Blind Date match with Test vs The Big Boss Man, and a Straight Jacket match with Ken Shamrock vs Jeff Jarret. Plus, in the main event The Rock battles The Undertaker in a special stipulation match; if The Rock wins he will vs The Undertaker at WWF King of The Ring 1999 for the WWF Championship. Speaking of The Rock, we get to see the world premiere of his new music video “Getting Chefy With It” a Chef Boyardee Commercial!
