We're doing a retrospect on one of the most iconic feuds in wrestling history: Sting vs. Hulk Hogan in WCW. In honor of Sting's recent retirement from wrestling at AEW Revolution 2024, we'll look back at the epic battles, dramatic moments, and unforgettable matches that defined this legendary rivalry. From Fall Brawl 1995 all the way to Fall Brawl 1999 and everything in between, we'll explore how Sting and Hogan's feud captivated audiences and helped shape Hogan's run as Hollywood and Sting's transformation into the iconic Crow character. Join in as we celebrate the career of Sting and the legacy of this historic feud. https://linktr.ee/MainEventMarks Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
He's the legend. He's the icon. He...is...Sting! As we say "goodbye" to Sting after his final match EVER took place at AEW Revolution, we are taking a look back at some fond memories of Sting's career. This week, we're covering Sting vs. Vader in WCW, whether they're one-on-one or in a multi-man match. Then, we cover the most infamous and star-making feud of Sting's entire career: Sting vs. Ric Flair! Most of the time, they were opponents, one-on-one, but sometimes, they were in tag matches or battle royals against each other. Our coverage literally goes from 1989 to 1995! This was incredibly fun to put together. I hope you all enjoy. https://linktr.ee/MainEventMarks Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Unfortunately, we're starting off the first show of 2024 with some extremely devastating news. However, we're still bringing you some fun content and we're gonna have a good time memorializing a great man who touched a lot of lives. This is a compilation of the greatest 30-man Royal Rumble matches we covered throughout the years. For the full shows, go back through our archives and give us a listen! Sixty Men... Three Rings... Three Giants... One Battle Royal! That was the tagline for the very first ever World War 3 event for WCW in 1995. It was not great, but it was unique and it drew a pretty good sized house in Virginia. Johnny B. Badd (not shockingly) opens the show against DDP for the TV Title and it tests the Diamond Doll's allegiances. The All Japan women are in tag-team action that puts what the WWF did a month earlier to shame. Big Bubba Rogers and Jim Duggan face off in a Taped Fist match (yes, really), Sting takes on Ric Flair in a forgotten match-up, and Lex Luger faces an injured "Macho Man" Randy Savage. In the main event, we've got 3 rings, 3 commentary teams, 60 men, 3 giants, and 1 winner. However, the finish was marred with controversy and you'll see why. Let's just say that it makes the babyface Hulk Hogan look like a giant douche. In the news, we discuss one of Vince McMahon's lawyers being investigated by the FBI, WCW and NJPW's working relationship possibly coming to an end, Sabu's surprise return to ECW, and much more! linktr.ee/MainEventMarks Learn more about your ad choices. This is a comprehensive review of the greatest wrestling trilogy of all time. We will hear no other contenders! In 1989, "Nature Boy" Ric Flair took on Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat at 3 separate events: Chi-Town Rumble, Clash of the Champions VI: Ragin' Cajun, and WrestleWar '89: Music City Showdown. All 3 events kind of sucked and drew like crap. However, the one and only match from all 3 events that anyone was talking about (and is still talking about to this day) is Flair vs. Steamboat. Your Main Event Marks watched all 3 events in full and will review the main event matches for you in detail, giving our opinions as well as the opinions from Uncle Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer "News" letter at the time. linktr.ee/MainEventMarks Learn more about your ad choices. Just 6 days after Survivor Series 1991, we've got a shortened show titled This Tuesday in Texas. The Undertaker was only 1 year into his WWF run when he defeated the goose that laid the golden eggs, Hulk Hogan, to become WWF Champion on Taker's 1 year anniversary (with the help of Ric Flair). Now, he's the defending champion against The Hulkster. "Macho Man" Randy Savage also looks for revenge on the evil snake man, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, who had been making Savage and Miss Elizabeth's lives a living Hell for months, including crashing their wedding reception and having a cobra bite Macho Man. Bret Hart also takes on Skinner, the British Bulldog does battle with the Warlord, and Repo Man teams with Ted DiBiase against Virgil and El Matador to continue "The Million Dollar Man's" feud with his former "servant." This show took place on December 3, 1991, at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, Texas. The event was an attempt by the WWF to establish Tuesday as a secondary pay-per-view night. Lukewarm reaction and a disappointing 1.0 buyrate rendered the experiment a failure, and the company shelved its plans until October 2004, when it held Taboo Tuesday. linktr.ee/MainEventMarks Learn more about your ad choices. The show may be called "November to Remember," but both the show and the year 1995 are things WE DO NOT want to remember! Per our usual arrangement, this show was a bleeding, disorganized mess. We did get to see some crazy things like Mikey Whipwreck defeating Steve Austin (pre Stone Cold) for the ECW Title and "The Hardcore Legend" Terry Funk in tag-team action with his protege, Tommy Dreamer. But beyond that, you're looking for corn in a turd. This dropped (pardon the poop pun) a day before Survivor Series and while the WWF wasn't pumping out golden content at this time, ECW was putting out a MUCH inferior product (in our opinions). In the news, we cover the ongoing (and brand new) Monday Night Wars, the WCW and NJPW relationship going into Starrcade, ECW in hot water with the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission over a fire incident, ECW wrestlers jumping ship, the economy crashing in Mexico effecting the wrestling industry, whether or not Randy Savage is injured, and much more! Yes, we're going back to one of the worst years in professional wrestling history. The good news is this "New Generation" show is actually somewhat fondly remembered by wrestling historians. Diesel has been the WWF Champion for a loooong time and business has been way down. So, now what? We're going back to Bret Hart! There are also some pretty weird match-ups in the Survivor Series elimination matches, but it makes for some interesting situations. Women from All Japan Women's Wrestling are also imported for a 4-on-4 match that was...tolerable. Troy is flying solo through the majority of this one, but "The Main Event Collector" Greg is joining him for the actual review of the event itself. In the news, everything is going to crap for WWF, WCW, ECW, and the USA indies (financially-wise). WCW and WWF and doing battle in the ratings as Nitro is trying to heat itself up and fans are turning on Hulk Hogan. This and much more on the show! This was Starrcade main event match 1-of-2 between Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes. However, this one...was for money! Soooo much money on the line in this show. Not only was a $1 million check on the line in the main event (along with, ya know, the World Heavyweight Title), but money was also on the line in the match of Tully Blanchard vs. Ricky Steamboat (along with, ya know, the World Television Title). This show was very repetitive in that respect. Joe Frazier was also the the referee for the main event, was supposed to be a babyface, and Dusty Rhodes (who was ALSO supposed to be a babyface) came off as a complete s**t heel against him and Ric Flair! Also on this show, we get the US Title on the line in a geriatric showdown between Wahoo McDaniel and "karate master" (not joking) "Superstar" Billy Graham. We also see matches for the NWA Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Title, NWA Brass Knuckles Title, NWA Florida Heavyweight Title, and NWA World Junior Heavyweight Title, plus a bunch of other craziness. We break that all down! Also, in the news, we discuss the WWF's business being on shaky ground, the drawing power or possible lack thereof of Hulk Hogan, Japan's business is taking off, the American territories are trying to hang on while "the big two" are going national, Rocky III looking very different if history was slightly altered, the Road Warriors throwing their weight around, an infamous moment on 20/20 that blacklisted a small-time wrestler, and much more! Most of this show can honestly be described as, "This is stuff we could have, and SHOULD HAVE, only had to see on Nitro or Thunder." Unfortunately, they threw it onto a show they expected people to pay for. However, those are not the big stories of this show. The two biggest stories of Halloween Havoc 1998 were the disastrous, craptastic match between Hollywood Hogan and The Warrior that was more historically bad than their WrestleMania VI match was good. Then, WCW follows that up with possibly the best match of Goldberg's career as he defends the WCW Title against Diamond Dallas Page. However, WCW forgot to let PPV providers know they were going to run very late, so viewers sat through the embarrassing Hogan/Warrior match, then as soon as Goldberg and DDP tied up, the PPV feed cut off. WCW had to show the match for free the next night on Nitro, costing them boat loads of money and angering PPV providers. In the news, Raw steamrolls Nitro in the ratings as Stone Cold abducts Mr. McMahon and makes him pee himself, the WWF works with both Mexican and Japanese promotions, Scott Hall's ex-wife speaks publicly about the wrestling industry, WCW diminishes their Mexican talent while Goldberg diminishes Chris Jericho, the ECW Tag Champions refuse to lose to the Dudley Boyz, roller derby is coming back, an historic wrestling promoter is close to death, and much more! There are a few awesome matches on this show, but man...it was a bit of a rough watch getting there. On this show, Nigel McGuinness takes on the dominant Takeshi Morishima for the ROH Title and begins his memorable, amazing reign as champion. The Briscoes and No Remorse Corps beat the hell out of each other. Roderick Strong and Austin Aries put on a clinic. The NWA gets showcased. On top of that, Sweet and Sour Inc. and Age of the Fall are all over this one. There are quite a few indy-riffic matches to start this show, but I swear, if you hang in there...it gets better! In the news, Kurt Angle gets a DUI, TNA's home channel goes High Def, John Cena may miss WrestleMania, Chris Jericho is rumored to be leaving WWE forever, the Hulkster has a new gig, Scott Hall is crossing the border, and much more! It was the first ever Hell in a Cell match in WWE history AND the debut of the Undertaker's "little brother," Kane! This was also our final stop on the road to the infamous Survivor Series 1997, which was Bret Hart's last match in WWE for over a decade. On top of that, Brian Pillman passed away in a hotel room before this event and the WWF broke the news on their pre-show, also giving any updates they had during the PPV itself. For not being all that great of a show, this was certainly an historic event! Meanwhile, in the news, we discuss DX pissing off everyone, Don Callis being hired into WWF, Pride shows interfering with UFC cards, WWF teaming with FMW for big attendance numbers, ECW legal troubles and injuries, WCW continues to dominate in the ratings while being a disorganized mess, and much more! The wrestling industry was in a bad place in the fall of 1990, and this show was proof. There were a total of 10 matches on this show and only about 2-3 of them that were actually decent. The Steiner Brothers put the US Tag Titles on the line against The Nasty Boys, Doom defends the World Tag Titles against Ric Flair and Arn Anderson, Lex Luger's US Title is on the line against Stan Hansen, and Sting defends his World Title against Sid Vicious. This on top of other matches. In the news, we talk about big roster shake-ups in WWF, drama backstage in WCW, some messed up allegations against a wrestler, and much more! One night. One cage. Zero WarGames. 500 matches. Yeah, this one was a bit rough to watch. Damn near every single match had a jumpstart, an afterbirth, and was heavily overbooked. Crowds for WCW were severely dwindling by this point, there was speculation over a sale for WCW, leadership was in disarray, and the whole thing was just a giant mess. Booker T at least got to defend his WCW Title against Kevin Nash in a fairly straight-forward Caged Heat match (which was literally just a cage match) to close the show and Goldberg and Scott Steiner fooled us for a minute into thinking they'd have a good match. In the news, we discuss ECW's continuing woes, someone suing Paul Heyman and RVD, WCW's backstage drama with Turner, WWF soaring in the ratings, a new fake retirement scheme for Atsushi Onita in FMW, some new wrestling promotions cropping up in America and Japan, and much more! Aces & Eights is running wild while concealing their identities from the world, the masked biker gang is injuring wrestlers all over the place, Hulk Hogan IS NOT happy, and the Bound for Glory Series is coming to a close. It's back to one of the worst years in wrestling, 1993! Sure, 1995 rightfully always gets the title of "worst year ever," but 1993 gave it a run for its money. There were a few shining lights on this show, like Lord Steven Regal battling it out with Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat for the TV Title, Arn Anderson & Paul Roma vs. The Nasty Boys was...fine...Ric Flair defending the WCW International World Heavyweight Title (real name) against Rick Rude was decent but worse than you'd expect, and the WarGames match was...interesting. It involved Shockmaster! 'Nuff said! The rest of the card was straight garbage, though. It's sometimes nice to see "new people" being put in the main event, but not this time. Balls Mahoney ends up going one-on-one with Rob Van Dam to close the show and it was NOT GOOD. A SHOULD BE main event ECW Title match is actually near the middle of the card. It also goes from Taz defending against Masato Tanaka to a Three Way Dance when Mike Awesome gets involved...AND WINS! This will open the door to a HUGE controversy for ECW that involves WCW and the WWF as Taz is on his way out and, unbeknownst to anyone, so is Mike Awesome. There is an awesome opening contest between Lance Storm and Jerry Lynn. There's enough on this card to keep it from being completely unwatchable, but it was good ole crappy ECW. This was honestly a pretty memorable SummerSlam for 2 reasons--Brock Lesnar absolutely tossing John Cena around like a young child and the fact that most of the attires worn on this show made it onto Mattel action figures! We review this show that was at a weird point in time for WWE. Brock Lesnar just broke the Undertaker's WrestleMania undefeated streak earlier in the year, so he was on a tear. Brie Bella was feuding with Stephanie McMahon and was about to transition into a feud with her own twin sister, Nikki. The Miz and Dolph Ziggler were stealing shows over the Intercontinental Title. Bray Wyatt and Chris Jericho were having an odd feud that was pretty entertaining, in the long run. Roman Reigns does battle with Randy Orton. Paige and AJ Lee have a rematch for the Divas Title. Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose continue their blood feud, but in a lame-ass Lumberjack match. Also, Rusev represents Russia against Jack Swagger, representing America, in a Flag match. In the news, we discuss Hulk Hogan giving interviews on Stone Cold Steve Austin, alleged racism backstage in WWE, a former MMA fighter thinking about breaking into wrestling, NJPW and ROH working together, drama over Alberto Del Rio, TNA not knowing where they're going to land for their iMPACT! Every NXT TakeOver in Brooklyn was awesome and you can count on one hand (with having fingers left over) at how many NXT TakeOver events weren't absolutely amazing. We've got a rematch between Johnny Gargano and NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa, but this time, it's Last Man Standing. Kairi Sane also goes for the NXT Women's Title against defending champion Shayna Baszler. Adam Cole puts his North American Title on the line against Ricochet. EC3 and Velveteen Dream also clash. And we open this card with a fantastic Tag-Team Titles match with the Undisputed Era (Strong & O'Reilly) defending against Mustache Mountain (Bate & Seven). In the news, we discuss the passing of a wrestling legend, the big return for a former member of The Shield, Hulk Hogan's apology to the WWE locker room, the Miz saying silly things, a major lawsuit between Jeff Jarrett and Anthem Entertainment, and much more! In 2017, Cody Rhodes wasn't in WWE or AEW--he was the reigning, defending Ring of Honor World Heavyweight Champion. On this show, one of the biggest of the ROH calendar year, he defended that title against visiting NJPW talent Minoru Suzuki in the main event. Unfortunately, that was fairly unimpressive. On the bright side, most of the rest of the card was really freakin' good. We see A LOT of the Young Bucks on this night as they defend the Tag Titles as well as attempt to win the Six Man Tag Titles. The now-disgraced "Villain" Marty Scurll faces one of the Best Friends, Chuckie T. KUSHIDA puts the ROH TV Title on the line against Kenny King. The future Damien Priest, Punishment Martinez takes on "Switchblade" Jay White in a Las Vegas Street Fight. Also, "The Last Real Man" Silas Young and Jay Lethal possibly have the match of the night as they face off in a Last Man Standing match. Also, in the news, we discuss the death of a legendary manager, a former WCW and WWE World Champion teasing a return to the ring, updates on Daniel Bryan's attempted journey back to the ring, where Rey Mysterio will end up, a major controversy over the FloSports streaming service, the death of Global Force Wrestling, and much, much more! Vince Russo may be gone from WWF, but some of his booking philosophy still remains. That's evident here in 2000, which was both a great year and a ridiculously stupid year in Vince McMahon's House of Hunky Men. We have the infamous E&C vs. Dudley Boyz vs. Hardy Boyz TLC match for the WWF Tag Titles on this show, Shane McMahon takes a bump for the highlight reels when he faces Steve Blackman for the Hardcore Title, and The Rock defends the WWF World Title against Triple H and Kurt Angle, who are also feuding over Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley. We also have some pretty awful stuff we'd rather soon forget, like Tazz taking on Jerry "The King" Lawler and JR shattering a candy jar over Tazz's head, a Thong Stink Face match between The Cat and Terri Runnels, and a lackluster DX members fight between Road Dogg and X-Pac. In the news, we discuss Vince Russo's issues in WCW, Hulk Hogan's lawsuits against Russo and WCW, WCW and ECW continuing to tank while the rats are jumping off the sinking ships, the Monday Night Raw battle between USA and TNN continues, a Mexican legend is contemplating running for political office, and much more! Going all the way back to 2008, we get to see a lot of great stars who never "made it big" outside of ROH as well as some pretty recognizable stars from today's AEW and WWE. This was during Nigel McGuinness's awesome run as ROH World Champion! We also get to see the Briscoe Brothers in action, Kevin Steen & El Generico vs. The Motor City Machine Guns, the Age of the Fall splinters, Sweet & Sour Inc. are getting on everyone's nerves, and much more. In the news, we talk about Stephanie McMahon about to come back as Bruce Prichard is about to get fired, Brock Lesnar saying he regrets ever wrestling in WWE, some TNA stars moving on from the company, Kevin Nash being Kevin Nash, and an incredibly messed up story that got IWA:MS into some serious trouble. An imposter Undertaker has been running around the WWF for a while as Paul Bearer threatens to bring back THE REAL Undertaker for this Spider-Man pointing meme of a showdown at the 2nd biggest PPV on the WWF's calendar. Bret Hart also defends his WWF World Title against his baby brother, Owen, in one of the greatest cage matches of all time. The thing a lot of people may forget about this show, though, is that "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase is EEEEVERYWHERE on this thing! He's involved in almost every feud, every match, and is a HUGE player in the landscape of WWF at this time. He's got the fake Undertaker. He's buying up superstars for his Million Dollar Corporation. He's got teams going for titles. He's mega integral to Vince McMahon's House of Fun at this time. We discuss all of this craziness, the crappiness of 'Taker vs. 'Taker while still being in awe of it, the awesomeness of the Hart vs. Hart cage match, and everything in between. In the news, we discuss the changing landscape of professional wrestling as a whole as Hulk Hogan is now the WCW Champion, the NWA looking to crown a new World Champion in ECW (SPOILER: This doesn't end well), Vader dominating back in Japan, the Gangstas in Smoky Mountain Wrestling being too hot to touch in many TV markets while also being disavowed by the NAACP, and much more! WCW went all-in with Bash at the Beach 1998, and it paid off in money but not with show quality. Even matches like Eddie Guerrero vs. Chavo Guerrero and Chris Jericho vs. a returning Rey Mysterio weren't all that great, dragged down by the overall show. Goldberg literally won the WCW World Title from Hollywood Hogan 6 days before this show, in the Georgia Dome, and he put that title on the line against Curt Hennig. That match felt like such an after thought and didn't last long, making Hennig look like a loser. Meanwhile, Hogan was still in the main event slot. He teamed with NBA megastar, Dennis Rodman, to take on Diamond Dallas Page and another NBA megastar, Karl Malone. There was tons of bad blood, controversy, and publicity leading into this one...and it wasn't great. All in all, this show was pretty bad, but WCW was still raking in the cash. So, what did they care? In the news, we discuss the major shakeups in WCW, WWF's embarrassing Brawl for All, major injuries for big time players in the WWF, the DX parody of the Nation of Domination, Stan Hansen controversies in Japan, big name no-shows, and much more! This show was definitely the epitome of "the Vince Russo era" of WCW. There were jumpstarts, afterbirths, tournaments, weapons all over the place, no real heels or faces, whacky turns, returns out of nowhere, and Russo himself on camera. Lance Storm was certainly the star of this show, but let's be honest...there are NO STARS in this era of WCW. The new United States Champion is crowned, Scott Steiner and Goldberg collide, 3 Count & the Jung Dragons continue their never ending feud, Jeff Jarrett is hitting people with guitars, clowns and demons are fighting, and the whackiness continues! In the news, we discuss continued fallout from Russo shooting his mouth off about Hulk Hogan at Bash at the Beach, the fallout from XPW "wrestlers" (using that term loosley) showing up at an ECW show in SoCal, ECW continuing to push for a new show after getting dropped by TNN, promotional wars in Japan, Buff Bagwell in legal hot water, the WWF punching back against censorship, and much, much more! For the second In Your House event, we're going back to 1995. The main event was a battle for the WWF Title between champion Diesel and challenger Sycho Sid. The ring is surrounded by hand-picked babyfaces for Diesel and the Million Dollar Corporation, paid off by Ted DiBiase. This wasn't the best match of the night, however, as Jeff Jarrett not only did a live performance of "With My Baby Tonight," but also defended his Intercontinental Title against Shawn Michaels. To this day, Jeff Jarrett says this was his greatest match ever. In the news, we talk about the most recent UFC pay-per-view involving Tank Abbott, WCW Bash at the Beach 1995 being a crap show, a change of gimmicks for Fatu and Jean Pierre Lafitte, the debut of a brand new Tiger Mask, and much more! In 1994, Hulk Hogan made the leap from the WWF to WCW (with a short hiatus in between). We've covered the end of Hogan's WWE career in previous podcasts and now we're touching on the beginning of his WCW career as he FINALLY goes one-on-one with "Nature Boy" Ric Flair for the WCW Title. This match has been talked about for years and years, built up since Flair joined the WWF in late 1991, and it never happened...until now! Also on this card, "Stunning" Steve Austin defends his United States Title against Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, the (VERY) odd couple of Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan defend the WCW Tag Titles against Pretty Wonderful, Dustin Rhodes puts his trust in tag-team partner Arn Anderson as they face Terry Funk and Bunkhouse Buck, Vader faces the newly crowned Guardian Angel, and Lord Steven Regal puts the TV Title on the line against the baaaad man, Johnny B. Badd! In the news, we discuss the ongoing steroid trial between the WWF and US Government, Undertaker vs. Undertaker at SummerSlam being spoiled by early advertisements on pizza boxes, the SMW champion no-showing and causing issues, and much, much more! It's ironic that the main event was titled a Stairway to Hell match, because most of ECW was like watching pro wrestling from Hell. It wasn't all bad, though, as we got a decent ECW World Title match between Tommy Dreamer and Justin Credible, a great Four Corners match between Yoshihiro Tajiri, Mikey Whipwreck, Little Guido and Psicosis, Jerry Lynn and Steve Corino had a great match, and we've got a fantastic Six-Man Tag match. Rob Van Dam tries to drag Scotty Anton (the former Scotty Riggs) to a presentable match, Big Sal and Balls Mahoney have a turd, Rhino and Sandman beat each other up over the TV Title, and much more. In the news, we discuss the disastrous fallout of WCW Bash at the Beach 2000, a hellacious injury for Johnny "The Bull" Stamboli, a future WWE star debuting in OVW, the drama between ECW, WWF, and TNN, plus much more! Get ready to cash in with the Marks! AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura had been feuding over the WWE Title since before WrestleMania 34, and it's culminating now in a Last Man Standing match. Two of the best in the world clash for the third time this year! On top of that, the other competitors in the men's Money in the Bank match look to keep down "The Monster Among Men," "The Goddess" Alexa Bliss looks to win her first Money in the Bank match, Carmella looks to escape this event still the SmackDown Women's Champion as she faces "The Emperess of Tomorrow" Asuka, "The Irresistable Force" Nia Jax puts her WWE Raw Women's Title on the line against "The Baddest Woman on the Planet" Ronda Rousey, and much more! Not every match on this show was a banger. Daniel Bryan looks to carry the weight of Big Cass, Sami Zayn and Bobby Lashley can't seem to make it "click," and Seth Rollins puts the IC Title on the line against Elias in quite a "meh" encounter. In the news, we discuss WWE breaking records with the forthcoming Super Show-Down in Melbourne, Australia, a current AEW talent that at the time was looking to debut in NXT, Jeff Hardy getting into trouble yet again, AAA trying to run a lucha libre show in Madison Square Garden, an upcoming mega indy spectacular on PPV, and much more! TNA's first anniversary show was treated like just any other show. However, we did get Sting, Jeff Jarrett, AJ Styles, and a debuting Sean Waltman in the main event...for whatever that's worth. Vince Russo's fingerprints and face was all over this one. It was ridiculous "crash TV" at its "finest" (for lack of a better term). We've got former WWE, WCW, and ECW guys here as well as young NWA talents. This is one of the best shows from this era of WCW and one of the greatest Great American Bash shows of all time! Your hosts, Troy & Greg, have personally seen this show 3-4 times. It was Sting's crowning achievement of FINALLY beating Ric Flair to sit atop the mountain as the WCW World Heavyweight Champion. The future Undertaker, "Mean" Mark Callous, also takes on Lex Luger for Luger's United States Title. This was actually Mark's "audition" for the WWF, which we discuss on the podcast. The NWA World and United States Tag Titles are on the line in matches. Vader debuts for WCW against the Z-Man. There are quite a few outdated things on this show that may make you cringe and...oh yeah...El Gigante debuted. But, other than that...this was pretty great! Also, in the news, WCW may be losing Ric Flair very soon, they can't get rid of the Iron Sheik, Terry Gordy & Steve Williams are trying to come in as a tag-team, everything is coming up Milhouse for the WWF, there are some big talent trades going on in Japan, and much more! The main event involved murder. That's right! On a major WWE pay-per-view, someone was going to die. Why? Who knows! The Undertaker was fighting for the life of Paul Bearer against the Dudley Boyz in a handicap match dubbed The Concrete Crypt match. It was never said that if the Undertaker lost, Paul would be buried in concrete. Paul Heyman simply said that if the Undertaker "didn't do the right thing," Bearer would be buried. W...T...F? Wrestling was in a weird place in 1994. Having said that, this may have been one of the weakest King of the Ring events of all time, but we did get one of the greatest matches under 4 minutes ever and a glimpse into the future of the WWF as Diesel takes on Bret Hart. The main event of this show was also one straight out of the Over the Hill Club as Jerry "The King" Lawler and "Rowdy" Roddy Piper face off in a comedically bad match that even bordered on "boring" at times. At least we've got some interesting news as Hulk Hogan joins WCW, there are 2 Undertakers, Smoky Mountain Wrestling is struggling to stay afloat, and nutty Herb Abrams is planning on running UWF in a HUGE building in Las Vegas, Nevada! The biggest moment of Jay Briscoe's career happened at this show, in the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. Possibly the biggest name Ring of Honor had seen in years, Kevin Steen (now Kevin Owens in WWE) was the reigning ROH Champion and had Steve Corino's SCUM stable backing him up. All the odds were stacked against Jay, and this was fantastic! Jay Lethal also did battle with Michael Elgin for #1 contendership at the World Title, the American Wolves faced off against reDRagon for the ROH Tag Titles, Roderick Strong took on "Machine Gun" Karl Anderson, and much more! In the news, we discuss lawsuits over Owen Hart wrapping up (yes, in 2013), controversies over CM Punk (this could literally be any time), Paul Bearer passing and what WWE did about it, Michael Cole changing direction as an announcer, a certain former WWE superstar getting fired from ROH before retiring, and a ton more! On April 29, 1999, WWF basically aired a pilot for SmackDown! on UPN. Not a whole lot of great wrestling happened here, but there were some good moments. THAT'S RIGHT! IT'S BATTLE BOWL! What does that mean? It means we're getting 30 matches on 1 freaking pay-per-view. Will they mean anything? Sure, if you think "randomly" selecting tag partners to face off until they finally get into a mid-card battle royal where the prize is a literal ring...then yeah, it means something. Besides that, we've got Dean Malenko putting his Cruiserweight Title on the line against Brad Armstrong (older brother of Road Dogg), Konnan defending the United States Title against Jushin Thunder Liger, and The Giant defending his World Heavyweight Title against Sting. While WCW was about to hit a super hot period, you couldn't necessarily tell by this card. It's okay, though, because we spice it up and have a lot of laughs! Meanwhile, in the news, we discuss Nitro going to 2 hours, a stacked Great American Bash card coming up (now in our archives), Scott Hall and Kevin Nash making waves, Japan thinking they've got a new giant to promote, WWF signing a crap ton of jobbers and also signing one of the future biggest stars in the history of the business. For an ECW, we've done way worse and we WILL DO way worse. This one actually wasn't that bad. There were, per usual, a lot of very questional booking decisions. There were also some God awful matches and the usual ECW tropes. However, those weren't enough to drag this show down to the depths of usual ECW pay-per-views. Taz was supposed to wrestle Chris Candido in the main event, but that didn't happen because Candido and Tammy were leaving, so Heyman wanted to squash him early. So, instead, we get a thread with the Dudley Boys all night, taking out randos and then trying to take out Taz. Besides that, we got possibly the greatest RVD vs. Jerry Lynn match ever, Little Guido taking on Yoshihiro Tajiri, a special appearance by Sid, and much more! In the news, we discuss ECW's continued money woes (leading to Shane Douglas's second...or maybe third departure), WWF handing WCW their rear on a platter, WCW's booking going down the tubes while the inmates run the asylum, Gordon Solie having major health issues, and more on this week's show! The set is one of the most iconic ever for a WWE pay-per-view, but one word sums this show up: mid! From surprisingly disappointing matches from RVD & Rey Mysterio vs. The Dudley Boyz to Undertaker vs. Booker T, to not shockingly disappointing matches like Rico & Charlie Haas vs. Hardcore Holly & Billy Gunn to John Cena vs. Rene Dupree to Torrie Wilson vs. Dawn Marie, and even the debut of Mordecai vs. Scotty 2 Hotty...this show was meh. The main event was incredibly bloody, however, when Eddie Guerrero literal buckets of blood while defending his WWE Title against John "Bradshaw" Layfield. So...that was interesting! There was also a SERIOUSLY racist promo before the main event, delivered by JBL. In the news, we're talking about Bret Hart and Brock Lesnar being backstage at a WWE show but not under contract, Jeff Hardy being suspended AGAIN, Kenzo Suzuki getting a new gimmick because he was almost saddled with a pretty racist one, and much more! This really was a 1-match show, but that 1 match sure delivered the goods! In the main event WarGames match, Sting's Squadron (Sting, Barry Windham, Dustin Rhodes, Ricky Steamboat and Nikita Koloff) faced off against the Dangerous Alliance (Steve Austin, Rick Rude, Arn Anderson, Bobby Eaton and Larry Zbyszko) in a bloody, brutal, awesome match full of carnage! A match to determine the #1 contenders for the IWGP Tag Team Titles (involving the Steiners) is also pretty good, partners Flyin' Brian and The Z-Man explode for the WCW Light Heavyweight Championship, Terry Taylor and Greg Valentine defend the WCW US Tag Titles against the Fabulous Freebirds, and Johnny B. Badd is in action. We've also got a lot of goofy gimmicks like Big Josh and the Super Invader, so there's that. TNA was shippin' off the Boston for 2008's Lockdown event! In the main event, we've got Samoa Joe vs. Kurt Angle for the TNA World Title and Joe's career is on the line. In Lethal Lockdown, it's an all-star cast of Team Christian Cage vs. Team Tomko! The rest of the card was...meh. It was there. It was nothing to write home about, but we have some fun laughing at some of this ridiculous booking. There are multiple matches where they try to see how many people you can jam into one cage, one match where you have to handcuff your opponents to the cage to eliminate them, and there are some goofy freaking gimmicks all over this card. In the news, we discuss Samoa Joe's contract and trademark woes, Jeff Hardy violating substance abuse policies in WWE, Stephanie McMahon taking time off from WWE, the former head of ECW leaving wrestling for good, and much more! Yes...this is THAT SHOW. Not only did the main event of the secondary show involve a tag-team match for the WCW World Heavyweight Title, but a Hollywood actor pinned the President of the company to win the belt. Yup...this is all real. This would also be the third title change in less than 2 weeks. WCW was dead at this point, but this just really drove the knife in deeper, making sure that body was a corpse. Beyond this, we've got Ernest Miller in action against Bam Bam Bigelow, Billy Kidman continuing his feud with Hulk Hogan (through ANOTHER Hogan), Sting in a Tables match against The Wall (that actually happened), Tammy (AKA, Sunny) "wrestles" against Paisley (AKA, Sharmell), and everyone gets a run-in and an afterbirth to their matches. In the news, we discuss controversies over the WWF's TV deals, a WCW wrestler facing a WWF wrestler for the ECW Title in ECW, Tazz getting buried in WWF, and WCW continuously crapping the bed at every turn on both TV and PPV. We're taking a trip down memory lane to revisit one of the least memorable events in WCW history, Spring Stampede 1998. You'd think that with the list of big names on this show, it would've been a hit, but that didn't work for us, BROTHER! There were some good matches, like Booker T vs. Chris Benoit, Ultimo Dragon vs. Chavo Guerrero, Chris Jericho vs. Prince Iaukea for the Cruiserweight Title, and even Raven vs. DDP for the US Title was a mess...but a fun mess. Other than that, Rick Steiner and Lex Luger continued their boring feud with Scott Steiner and Buff Bagwell while the heels faked injuries, Curt Hennig and British Bulldog put on a bland match that was secondary to the shenanigans outside the ring, a severely injured Macho Man faced Sting to a meh match in the main event, and Hollywood Hogan teams with Kevin Nash to take on The Giant and Roddy Piper in a Baseball Bat on a Pole match...and it sucked a high, hard one. The NWO is exploding here, so at least we'd soon get the Wolfpack. In the news, Ric Flair and Eric Bischoff are at odds over Flair's contract, many WCW wrestlers are thinking of jumping ship to ECW or WWF, ECW gets kicked out of another hotel, WWF breaks WCW's 83 week winning streak, Phil Mushnick craps on wrestling...AGAIN...and much more! This may be one of the greatest ECW shows ever and was their very first ever pay-per-view. Terry Funk takes on the Sandman and Stevie Richards in a 3-Way Dance where the winner will face Raven in the main event for the ECW Title. This was a big, crowning moment not only for Funk but also for the company as a whole. Shane Douglas and Pitbull #2 had a brutal brawl over Douglas breaking Pitbull #1's neck. Taz and Sabu has an awesome fight to culminate their blood feud, and this one ends in a big twist! There's also much more on this show. This was the first ever Lockdown event in TNA history, where every...single...match was contested inside of a steel cage. And ya know...it wasn't bad! Jeff Hardy and Raven have a match that is pretty much a "hat on a hat" as they have a Tables match inside of the Six Sides of Steel. AJ Styles and Abyss have a brutal match to determine who will face the NWA Champion at Hard Justice. America's Most Wanted defends the NWA Tag-Team Titles against Team Canada's Petey Williams and Eric Young. Bobby Roode and Dustin Rhodes face off in a 2-out-of-3 falls match where for the 3rd fall, they have to wear blindfolds. ... Yes, that's real. Also, STOP ME IF YOU'VE HEARD THIS ONE BEFORE! Kevin Nash has to pull out of a match due to injury. So, "Team Nash" in Lethal Lockdown consists of DDP, Sean Waltman, and BG James. Also, unfortunately, Chris Candido suffers an injury on this show that will end his life. In the news, we talk about Matt Hardy's first shoot interview since WWE canned him, another Raw Divas Search, Triple H almost being injured while Trish Stratus is put on the shelf, weird comments from Tony Schiavone on radio, and much more! The Marks (Troy & Greg) were there live in New Orleans for this one. It gets a bit of a bad rep for being bad or forgettable, but there are actually some great matches at the 34th WrestleMania. 1991 was a turbulent time in wrestling and we get into all of that. We're only a few months away from WCW's top heel, Ric Flair, giving a middle finger to Jim Herd and WCW as a whole to head to New York and win the coveted WWF World Title. But, for now, "The Nature Boy" still reigns supreme with the Big Gold Belt around his waist. He defends that NWA World Title against IWGP Heavyweight Champion, Tatsumi "Dragon" Fujinami. Also on this card, the Steiner Brothers put the NWA Tag Titles on the line against IWGP Tag Champions Hiroshi Hasa & Kensuke Sasaki in another Title vs. Title match, Sting faces The Great Muta, Masa Saito & Masahiro Chono take on Barry Windham & Arn Anderson of The Four Horsemen, Jushin Liger defends the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Title against Akira Nogami, and much more. This was...A SHOW... It was the night Bully Ray shocked no one except or Hulk and Brooke Hogan, revealing that he's was the true leader of the Aces & Eights. He screws over Jeff Hardy in the main event cage match and makes the "big reveal" to close this show. Other than that, we've got a sub-par Lethal Lockdown between the Aces & Eights and Team TNA, Joey Ryan vs. Joseph Park is somehow on a pay-per-view, and both Robbies (E & T) do battle...BRO! On top of that, we've got a decent Knockouts Title match, a good Triple Threat for the X-Division Title, a fast-paced and fun Triple Threat Tag-Team Titles match, and we have fun laughing at TNA trying to fill up the gigantic Alamodome. In the news, we talk about Bret Hart's shoot interview on Triple H, Hulk Hogan, Eric Bischoff, and telling AJ Styles to leave TNA. We also discuss Scott Hall's health issues, TNA trying to leave the iMPACT!
