Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 30, 2024 is: purport • per-PORT • verb To purport is to claim to be or do a particular thing when this claim may not be true. // The report purports to be objective, but its bias is clear. See the entry > Examples: “With the surge in popularity of environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing, it has become more important than ever to ensure that related companies and projects are as ‘green' as they purport to be.” — Zennon Kapron, Forbes, 18 July 2023 Did you know? The Latin verb portare, meaning “to carry,” was the port of entry for many an English word, from the noun portfolio to familiar verbs report, support, and transport. (The port a ship uses comes from a different Latin source: portus, meaning “port.”) Purport too ultimately comes from portare, although its direct ancestor is the Anglo-French verb purporter, meaning “to carry” or “to mean.” Today, purport is typically used when someone or something makes a claim that may or may not be true; something purported to be a fact is not at all a sure thing. The skepticism that modern purporting generally requires wasn't present in the original verb, however. In the late 17th century, a purported claim was assumed as true as any. And three centuries before that, to purport a message, idea, etc., was simply to convey it. Purport can also function as a noun with a meaning closely related to the older verb one: it can refer to the main or general meaning conveyed in a piece of writing, in someone's actions, etc., as in “the purport of the visit” or “the essay's purport.”

Zennon shares what constitutes a super app. And if are all platforms that are regarded as a super-apps are worthy of the title. If BNPL in Asia will replace traditional credit cards. Government led domestic card networks replacing Mastercard and Visa. A commonly held belief around digital banks in Asia that Zennon passionately disagrees with. Zennon's counter-intuitive, half-crazy prediction about the next five years for the Asian payments industry. After living in the shadow of Western-style development for the greater part of the last 200 years, China is in the throes of crafting it’s own vision of what it means to be a modern economic power. That doesn’t always sit well with other countries – and particularly the U.S. – a nation grown accustom to it’s hard-won hegemony.  China’s demonstration of its new-found strength is showing up in dozens of ways. Militarily, as in its testing of its territorial rights with India and in the South China Sea. Politically, as reflected in its imposition of new security laws in Hong Kong. And diplomatically, squaring off – as it were – with the US over issues relating to trade and technology transfer. The country is also investing in a series of longer-term strategies to ensure it’s economic and political rebound, in some cases, thinking well ahead of the curve, and ahead of other nations like the US, the UK, and Japan – all mired in their own set of domestic issues. In this week’s episode, we tackle China’a quest to deploy one of the world’s first comprehensive digital currencies. DCEP as the chosen acronym for China’s so-called Digital Currency Electronic Payment platform now under development and primed for piloting. What are digital currencies and why is China so enthusiastically pushing to convert its currency from a cash to a digital equivalent. Here to break it down for us on this episode of Inside Asia is Zennon Kapron, Founder and Director of Kapronasia, a fintech boutique strategy and research firm.

Der FinTech Podcast #198 diesmal mit Zennon Kapron dem Gründer von Kapronasia. Zennon und Rafael haben sich auf der diesjährige Money 20/20 Asia in Singapur getroffen und sprechen über Trends in SEA, China und die Region. Außerdem, wie findet die Internationalisierung der chinesischen Player statt, was machen die südostasiatischen Spieler und welche Regulierung gibt es in China die die Internationalisierung treiben? Was passiert in Asien?

In this episode I speak with Zennon Kapron, founder of Kapron Asia and author of the book 'Chomping at the Bitcoin'. Kapron Asia is a well-known financial consulting and market research firm in Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Zennon became familiar with Bitcoin through his work as a financial consultant in Shanghai, and watched closely in 2013 when Bitcoin-mania was sweeping through China. Chomping at the Bitcoin gives the first EXCLUSIVE analysis of China’s role in the ongoing Bitcoin saga. In addition to geeking out on Bitcoin, Zennon and I talk about other innovation happening in the financial industry in China and around the world. We discussed the increasingly influential role of the large tech companies, primarily Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent and their role in reshaping the banking, investing and payments landscape (and in fact how such innovation may actually slow Bitcoin's adoption). Zennon also shared with me his observation that it was Blockchain, not Bitcoin, that has been getting all the attention from the mainstream financial community these days. Apparently it’s what’s on the lips of senior people at many of the major financial institutions, and Zennon explains why. Other than that, we get into Shanghai’s volatile stock market, the shadow banking industry, foreign tech companies trying to compete in China and much more. Enjoy!
