When Rachel Schneider wrote “The Financial Diaries”, the research uncovered several misconceptions that the financial industry has about the financial lives of the average person. When her research was done and her book was published, the Omidyar Network that had funded the study then presented her with the opportunity to solve one issue that she found in her research. Her answer is Canary, which helps businesses create safety nets for their employees and the communities they live in, and helps smooth over the rough times that inevitably fall in all our lives. I hope you enjoy this episode and may we all have stronger communities and strengthen the ties that bind us together in the new year! Brazil's Central Bank launched Pix, a new nationwide real-time payment system, that has transformed money movement inside the country. Launched in November of 2020, within a year, over 62% of Brazil's population had adopted Pix, including businesses and consumers. Last month, the fintech universe was set abuzz following the news that A16Z had written its biggest check to date. But the eye-watering sum wasn't at the heart of the buzz; it was the man behind the raise: Adam Neumann. Despite allegations of impropriety with his form venture, WeWork, he is trusted by investors once again. We wanted to dig into the possible reasons why, and how it could be explained by a "survivor bias". We dig into how survivor bias works, why it is actually systemic, and the harm it does to problem solving. In addition to this episode, our financial journalist Micky Tesfaye dug into this topic further on our blog. There are no questions around the popularity of BNPL. It has been hailed as the payments product of GenZ and Millennials, but use by all generations has flourished over the last year. The questions left around it are about whether it is a safe, smart, and fair credit product, or is it a path to bad credit? Is this going to lead to a giant consumer debt issue, or is it a healthy alternative lending product that allows families and those with minimal access to credit to stretch their budgets? We spoke with Gary Stein, Chief Product & Compliance Officer at Opy (and formerly with the CFPB) to bring some clarity to this, and one thing was clear. BNPL isn't going anywhere. We are breaking from our typical format because of the intense news that is developing around the crypto markets, and how that is affecting businesses in that sector of the industry. We all know that the price of cryptocurrencies dropped. Bitcoin dove to a year low of $26284. Ethereum dove to $1792. Both seem to be stabilizing, but are very far from their beginning of the year highs. Even bigger are the stories about Luna and TerraUSD. TerraUSD is a stablecoin that is pegged to the USDollar, and managed to fall sharply under the $1 mark dragged down by Luna, which is the sister cryptocurrency. Luna has collapsed. As of this recording on May 12, 2022 at 3pm, it had dropped in value by 99% and is worth a little more than a penny. This has caused a certain amount of chaos at different crypto businesses, and their consumers.Today, Sanjib Kalita, Nick Holland, Micky Tesfaye and Rachel Morrissey take a look at whether the nature of cryptocurrency is amenable to sustainable business models, what type of oversight can crypto exchanges and businesses expect, and what this will mean for private and public stablecoins. It was organized and led by the Israeli Ministry of Finance, to anticipate the need for smarter international cooperation to protect systems. AI has a ‘black box' issue and the lack of understanding about how such systems work can raise concerns about opacity, unfair discrimination, ethics and threats to individual privacy and autonomy. Would it be fair/acceptable if in the future AI used your digital identity and social media posts and decided you have very expensive habits and are thus unlikely to repay your debts? The new AI regulation proposed in the EU aims to address these issues by requesting processes to build, audit and safeguard AI systems. The pandemic forced everyone to reevaluate many parts of life – from work life balance to payment habits. As consumers considered their various situations, it brought about the coming of age and exponential growth of the buy now, pay later industry. Thought of as primarily a millennial and Gen Z payment method due to their existing adoption of the subscription lifestyle, the pandemic forced older generations to adopt buy now pay later services. Since banking became mobile, it feels like it should be more intuitive and more automated. Our money should feel easier to use, easier to save and serve us better. Embedded finance is the beginning of a system where the banking is simply an inherent part of any transaction, and not a belabored afterthought. And with open banking empowering consumers to own their data, the combination with embedded finance could lead to incredible opportunities in every type of financial transaction. We spoke with Sanjay Mathew, from Oracle and Mayank Mishra from Citi, about their outlook as they lead clients through the possibilities. The pandemic rocked retail to the core, and was a time when multiple payments options and omni-channel commerce became vital to survival. Some of the biggest casualties are the mid to large traditional retailers who have declared bankruptcy in record numbers. Their profit margins are being squeezed by the behemoths while a lot of the problem solving has been for small businesses to operate better and smoother. In order to compete, retailers need to be able to move as swiftly as the payments industry, keeping up with new preferences, and experiment with trends. We spoke with John Lunn, CEO and Co-Founder of Gr4vy about creating a solution that allows these retailers to modify their payments stacks, and give retailers much needed flexibility. Retail investing has never been a hotter space. During the pandemic, as certain discretionary incomes increased, and apps have made participating in the markets easier, there has been an explosion of interest and activity. But this has led to a proliferation of meme stocks, and questionable investment activities, none of which are disappearing. Retail investing has always had a memetic nature, but social media communities about investing are changing the movement of investing information and making it vulnerable to bad sources. So how do you embrace the openness and create communities that are authentic, creative, and supportive as more people become part of these markets? We spoke to Stephen Sikes, COO of Public.com to learn more about their embrace of communities and how those communities can be fostered to make investing safer. Over the past year, both traditional and upstart financial service providers have streamlined and digitized to enable remote workforces and customer experiences. Consumers and society overcame challenges not seen in over a generation. Just as survivors of the Great Depression focused on achieving the necessary with minimal resources, consumers coming out of the pandemic have different expectations and behaviors, shaped by the events of the last two years. The game of leapfrog continues and consumers are now jumping, leading to category growth in neo-banking, crypto-investing, mobile financial services and new lending and payment schemes. Money20/20's sister company, WGSN, helps predict future consumer trends and behavior for product design , and they have identified the consumer sentiments that will shape how your future consumers feel, and mapped these sentiments into the four consumer profiles that will shape the world around us in 2023. In this special, we spoke with Andrea Bell, Director of Insights, about her teams expertise and research to identify four predominant trends in future consumers, and we discuss what financial services and tech will be prime for their engagement. Beyond what to expect of your future consumer in how they'll feel and behave, Future Consumer 2023 provides invaluable foresight on what people will want and demand, providing you with the knowledge you need to create the services and strategies of tomorrow. For an industry that prioritizes customer experience, knowing what consumers want is essential in taking a proactive approach to meet consumer demands. Alibaba subsidiary Ant Group Financial was headed for a highly anticipated IPO that was quickly pulled back when the Chinese Government imposed a much stricter regulatory structure. Now people are wondering if the IPO is curtailed for good, or what would need to happen for it to move forward. We are also wondering what these regulatory movements could mean as a pre-curser to increased regulatory scrutiny in the west. We spoke with Chong Li, Director of Government Relations and Strategic Partnerships here at Ascential, and with Sampath Sharma, Associate Research Analyst for APAC Fintech at S&P Global Market Intelligence, to understand what the new regulatory measures mean for Alibaba and Ant Financial, and when or if we can expect an IPO. The proponents of embedded finance have coined the phrase "Every Company Is a Fintech Company", and they are betting that the majority of all companies in the future will have financial services as part of their offerings. And while money has always been a large influence in every industry, this will give finance and the tools of finance more power to change things than ever before. As we are confronting the need for diversity, the opportunities for financial inclusion, and rethinking the problems around every basic institution, we need authenticity to guide us. With the help of Amy Nauiokas, CEO and Co-Founder of Anthemis Group, we sift through some of the arguments around how to think about the growing fintech ecosystem and the expansion of financial services. Open finance is gearing up to change the way that financial products are developed and delivered. For example, payroll data underpins almost all retail financial products. Having better, cleaner, faster access to that data could change the way financial risk is assessed. So, what has kept us from using it before? - cost, privacy, speed, verified accuracy, and technological capability. But, all of that could be set to change according Kurt Lin, the Co-Founder and CEO of Pinwheel, the API for payroll. Whether cryptocurrencies are up or down, they have gained real legitimacy in 2020. One of the reasons behind that is a company called Chainalysis, which has built an impressive data platform that allows you to decode transaction history throughout blockchains. But their plans are much more ambitious. Recognizing the value of bitcoin's scarcity, and the creativity spurred by innovations of competing currencies, they see a future of digital assets and want to provide the platform to keep them secure and legitimate. To learn how, we spoke to Philip Gradwell, Chief Economist at Chainalysis, IncGuest: Philip Gradwell, Chief Economist, Chainalysis, Inc.
