Dan and Paul are both men of color who suffer from, and openly talk about their mental illnesses. The goal of this podcast is to help further destigmatize mental illness in minority communities where we’re traditionally taught to suffer in silence. It’s o
In a brutally honest and transparent episode, Dan talks about living in constant fear. Living in fear every single day dates back to his childhood. For every fear Dan has, he's developed or obtained different methods to combat each fear to no avail. It's a vicious cycle and a perpetually losing battle. He even fears success. His anxiety disorder probably heavily contributes to this. Dan also announces that he'll be stepping away from podcasting for a while and apologizes for how inconsistent we've been here at A Few Screws Loose. You can keep up with Dan on social media. Dan shares how he was summoned again for jury duty for the second time this year. He also talks about gun ownership while having anxiety issues. The main topic of the show is public service. The images that civilians typically see of the military, police officers, firefighters, etc. often make the jobs look glamorous. P shares how that's not really the case as he details his 8-years of service as a firefighter and EMT. He talks about the 72-hour work-weeks, the constant training, drilling, seeing gruesome injuries, and deaths. Keep up with us on social media! Twitter: @ScrewsLoosePod IG: @ScrewsLoosePod
After getting some jokes off, Dan and P talk about how they're uncomfortable with displaying or receiving love. Dan struggles to be able to tell people that he loves them and is very uncomfortable when people tell him that they love him. Both Dan and P grew up receiving little affection and it carried over into adulthood. P talks about how his children are the same when it comes to being overly affectionate. Dan is joined by @PFromCharlotte to discuss how anxiety doesn't necessarily mean "afraid." Dan talks about how even though he has severe anxiety when it comes to interacting with people and generally avoids people at all costs, he will confront someone if it is 100% absolutely necessary, which he had to do recently. Even then the outcome of such a confrontation will usually have less than desirable outcomes. P talks about how just being Black alone is to be in a constant state of anxiousness even if you have no previous mental health disorders. He explains how doing seemingly innocent things can lead to encounters with law enforcement solely because of the color of our skin. Keep up with us on social media! This week Dan is joined by Paul to voice their frustration when it comes to this presidential election, the mismanagement of our country, the pandemic response, and how it affects us. It seems like nearly everyone is angry in 2020, no matter who or what they support. We talk about distancing ourselves from Trump supporters, withdrawing from social media and social interaction, and having to deal with an antagonist that looks like low budget versions of us. Dan shares his thoughts on the murder of Jonathan Price and how he would never find humor in the death of an unarmed Black man at the hands of the police, no matter the victim's personal beliefs. Dan is joined by @PFromCharlotte to discuss how everyone's so blatantly judgemental in the social media age. It can be really brutal for people that have low self-esteem. It's even spilled over into working from home during quarantine by people judging other people's backgrounds and living conditions. We also talk about racism, anger management, and conflict avoidance. *The actual episode begins at the 10:00 mark after a weird BTS Terry Crews and Michael Jackson dialogue. Dan reiterates how awkward and drained social interactions make him feel. He talks about making a totally out of character move by recently appearing as a guest on another podcast, which he usually declines due to his severe social anxiety. Dan also talks about being struggling with 2020 and being unable to cope with any more trauma, bad news, or anything not useful. Lastly he talks about how the internet has made people extremely comfortable disrespecting people online, especially Black women, but wouldn't say anything to a man on or offline. Dan opens up about the uncomfortable but brutally honest dialogue he's been having internally. He talks about learning to be able to laugh at himself, friendships based on terms and conditions, and how people often hide behind who they want people to believe they are. Dan explains how he's conflicted between growth and being a hypocrite. A lot of the things Dan will not tolerate or finds reprehensible, he's done before. Things like being judgemental, having a huge ego, lying, taking advantage of people, and being mentally/verbally abusive at times. How can you despise someone for doing some of the same things that you've done yourself? Does being ashamed of and finding these actions disgusting represent growth? Lastly, Dan shares why he keeps a comfortable distance from people that are close to him. Stay connected on Social Media! Dan Twitter: @iAmDanOnDrugs Instagram: @iAmDanOnDrugs
Dan is rejoined by P to talk about some of their "OGs." We talk about some of the people who were instrumental in helping us become the men we are today. Dan talks about how one of his OGs that used to be heavily involved in the streets pulled him out of the streets, leading by example. P talks about how he and his brother bonded over weed in P's teenage years, making him a little more receptive to his guidance. P also shares a story on how Dan's cousin counseled him into not "making someone disappear." If you enjoy A Few Screws Loose, rate and review! In this short episode, Dan talks about how he copes with being anxious. Before being prescribed medication a couple of years ago, Dan was forced to find ways to cope with anxiety and panic attacks. Boxing was one of the first things he found that helped, followed by high intensity workouts. He also talks about not talking through his issues or talking to anyone about his issues. Dan talks about not being able to ask for or accept help even if he needs it. A lot of people would attribute that to the male ego, but Dan thinks that it's a mixture of his distrust toward people, learned behavior, and not wanting to feel indebted. Dan also talks about being self-taught in multiple fields as a result of being unable or unwilling to ask for help. This led him to be accustomed to doing everything alone. Dan talks about battling depression during his self-quarantine and how he's lost the passion for podcasting, even questioning if he wants to continue being a podcaster. Dan gets depressed every single spring as discussed in previous episodes, but the additional stress and isolation from coronavirus pandemic have only amplified it. Dan also realized after 2 weeks of isolation that he needs small doses of human interaction. Things as minor as interacting with a cashier, or just being in the presence of people at the gym. Dan personally knows 6 people who have tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID19) and he has been unnecessarily in direct contact with 3 of them for about a week. He also talks about why the virus is spreading so rapidly in New Orleans and how his employer is only adding to the problem by encouraging the spread of the virus. In a recent episode of @AwakenedSoulPod "Soulful Mindset," Haize talked about making time for your passions and things that are important to you. Dan wanted to dispel the rumor started by his brothers Haize and AJ that he was rich lol. Although a joke, it led to this episode's topic being finances, financial responsibility, and financial insecurity. As discussed in prior episodes, Dan is an 8th-grade dropout with a GED who grew up in extreme poverty. He talks about not knowing the value of a dollar until his early 20s. Since then he's lived with what he calls a "poor mentality" in order to prevent spending money unnecessarily and saving every dollar like it's his last. Dan talks about how he has been trying to be more social with more people "offline" this year. In an attempt to meet new and positive people he shares how his experiences have been less than ideal and only confirmed what he already knew... he hates people. Dan shares how he received his first-ever "mental wellness check" from none other than Jayden Hollywood and how taken back he was. This led to Dan to talk about how close he came to losing his composure (and job) at work. Dan discusses how he thinks not having a father affected him. Single-parent households are not unique or uncommon at all, especially in communities of color. Since Dan never had a father figure to use as a point of reference, he doesn't know how truly affected he is by not having one. He can only speculate and share some of his childhood memories. Dan and P discuss emotional abuse in the workplace, at home, and in relationships. Some of this abuse is subtle by design in order to leave plenty of room for gaslighting and other forms of manipulation, especially at work. We also talk about how college aged adult women are targets because of their lack of life experience. Dan talks about how rather than teaching younger boys "the game," us men should be teaching it to younger girls in order to protect them. Knowledge is power. (2:48) Episode 20 recap. While cleaning off an old iPad Dan came across an old journaling app he used to write in. He shares his very last journal entry which was in 2016 and goes on to talk about some of the traumatic memories that came to mind after reading his journal. This week Dan and P share their experiences and opinions on how people generally don't give a f***. No matter how much you complain, no one really cares and the only people who listen are the people that almost have to listen. We doubt they care either. P also details more of his experiences in getting fired from the Fire Department for job related PTSD. He was sent a cease and desist when he went public about his termination and how the union didn't represent him. We also talk about today's entrepreneurs and how a lot of people who claim to be entrepreneurs lack or overestimate their skills in the social media age. We're attempting to produce a podcast per week during the month of July to see how sustainable a weekly podcast would be for us. (1:44) Episode 18 Recap. (2:29) Nobody Gives a F***. Since P is a father of many, many, m-ma-mm-ma-many children, Dan wanted to know if he fears passing some of the traits of his mental illness on to his children. Since children often learn by watching, it's not hard to believe that they can learn and adopt "abnormal" behavior and think it's normal. For instance, if a parent has OCD and washes their hands 150x per day, their child may think that's normal. Dan shares that he would prefer a Black therapist because of how they're able to relate culturally. P doesn't necessarily agree. (2:14) Episode 17 Recap. (2:55) Genetics vs. Learned Behavior. Dan and P are joined by Afro Becky (from @BlackLawPodcast) to discuss their relationships with their families and how they've distanced themselves from people. Both of us are pretty insulated from the outside world, only interacting when we have to. P talks about how he really lives by the "no new friends" motto. We also discuss being treated differently because of mental illnesses and most importantly how and why we feel like Black Sheep. (1:16) Episode 16 Recap. (1:48) Introducing Afro Becky. Disclaimer: This episode gets extremely random, maybe even offensive at times but we had a great time recording it. It's our loosest episode to date. We've both been going through rough times for a little over a month now. P has been off of his psychiatric medication totally for almost 2 years, until about 10 days ago. Recently P's insomnia, depression and heightened anxiety have returned big-time, prompting him to make an appointment with his doctor and be placed back on medication. P talks about what he was going through and his reaction to his medication and some of the altercations he's been in since adjusting to them. Dan has been depressed for the better part of 2 months combined with a feeling of hopelessness and a growing anger/frustration. He comes to the realization that he doesn't live in the present. He spends the present thinking about the past and the future while neglecting what's actually currently happening. This episode was a much needed relief for the both of us because how random it is and our ability to make light of what were pretty serious medical issues, including getting cameras shoved into their urethras and colonoscopies. We had a good time being able to inappropriately joke about these things. (6:59) What's Been Up With P? (16:43) When They See Us. (33:15) P On Drugs. (40:28) Control Issues. Dan and P discuss second chances. Should past trauma and environmental conditions be taken into consideration when evaluating someone's actions? Many of our community's heros have checkered pasts. People like Tupac, Mike Tyson, Allen Iverson, Michael Vick, Jay-Z etc... have all done things at one point that were criminal in nature. If you look into their upbringings you'll see a lot of similarities. Poverty, trauma, and broken families to name a few. Should their actions be judged the same as someone who didn't share the same experiences? If not for second chances, would they have reached their massive levels of success which allowed them to provide opportunities other people from similar backgrounds? (1:29) Episode 14 Recap. In episode 14 of "A Few Screws Loose," Dan and P discuss quarter-life and mid-life crises. Much like our peers, we had no guidance growing up and we weren't aware of the many opportunities that were available to us. Dan shares what his earliest aspirations were and why his anxiety and the underlying fear of failure has prevented him from accomplishing them. P shares how he ended up becoming firefighter/EMT and how it ruined his life, leaving him disabled. We also detail a lot of the various jobs we've had over the years good, bad, and funny. Then on a more serious note, we both share how we've had negative physical reactions to our most current jobs and how we feel that we're useless outside of our trades. In episode 13 of "A Few Screws Loose," Dan and P talk about how they take EVERYTHING personal. Both of us often perceive things that may be benign as being disrespectful or a slight towards us. We share some of the things that make us furious, even though these things may seem minor or even non-issues to others. Some of these things make us appear to be completely irrational. During the recording of this episode we also learned that we have some of the same issues when it comes to physical touch, affection and personal space. We don't like to be touched, period (even by loved ones). (0:00) Shout to The BREAKS Media Network! (4:06) Recap of Episode 12: Psych vs. Psych. (6:38) Being Disrespected. (20:08) Do Not Touch! In this episode of "A Few Screws Loose" Dan and P From Charlotte talk about their first visits to psychiatrists, which medications we were prescribed, and how we reacted to these medications. P also explains some of the differences between psychologists, psychiatrists, and counselors/social workers. Dan shares how he was prescribed Seroquel for insomnia and why that was an irresponsible choice of medication by his doctor. He also details his worst panic attack to date. P talks about how he was prescribed numerous medications at their max dosages to be taken simultaneously. This cocktail of medication caused P to get alarmingly worse, even causing him to self-harm with no prior history of self-harm. Some of these medications should never be prescribed together.
