To celebrate 2024, we're taking a look backwards, and diving into the standout thinkers who have taken to the Intelligence Squared stage in the past 12 months. You might still be on the hunt for that perfect gift for the avid reader in your life, or perhaps you're after some food for thought over the festive period. Either way, this 12 episode mini series will highlight the books that shaped 2024. We hope you'll join us in 2025 for more events that intrigue, fascinate and entertain. Jordan Stephens' life during his teenage years and his twenties was a whirlwind. As one half of the hip hop duo Rizzle Kicks, his days were full of success, fame and adulation as Rizzle Kicks' debut sold over 1 million singles and 600,000 albums in 2012. But for Jordan, success brought pain in its wake: a hidden pattern of self-harm, hedonism, destructive ideas of masculinity, and heartbreak. Diagnosed with ADHD, he was always chasing the elusive feeling of love and continually found himself distracted and derailed by drugs, drink, sex and chaos. After his world imploded, Jordan chose to step away from his previous life completely and allowed himself to finally explore the pain he'd repressed his entire life. His new memoir Avoidance, Drugs, Heartbreak & Dogs unsparingly digs into the fear, tenderness and trauma he carried. And it examines the confusing assumptions and contradictions about what a man should be that Jordan – and increasing numbers of young men today – struggle with. Jordan came to the Intelligence Squared stage in August 2024 where, in conversation with comedian, satirist, actor and Instagram sensation Munya Chawawa, he reflected on his own life experiences as he explores how we can encourage men to have a healthier and more loving conception of masculinity. In this episode, discover a completely renewed take on life. Far from the passivity-inducing "God is in control of everything" paradigm, the way Jesus teaches us to live is as those who carry authority. Authority over darkness. Authority over disease. Authority to bless and to curse. Authority to decree God's promises into your life. You need to stop assuming that everything that happens to you is God's will. It's time for you to search out what his will actually is, and then use your authority to shape your life into an example of heaven on earth. If you haven't yet, be sure to grab The DNA of a Man.Also, if you're interested in working with Matt one-on-one in the Unshakeable Man coaching program...click here to download the PDF writeup about the program and book a free 30 minute REBUILD coaching call with Matt.00:00:01-Introduction to Authority00:04:53-Understanding 'Exousia' and Delegating Authority00:11:37-Victim Mentality vs. Authority00:20:25-Shifting Mindsets and Declaring Promises00:26:04-Blessing Others with Authority00:29:48-Speaking Life Over Your Circumstances00:30:30-Aligning Thoughts and Taking Action

In the wilds of far northern Ontario, there are places where a person could walk for many days without finding civilization. In some areas you could be attacked by wolves before you ever made it out. Leaving a boy in these wild places will certainly bring him closer to manhood in a hurry! Around the world there are many different thoughts on when a boy becomes a man or a girl becomes a woman. In Jewish tradition, this happens at 12 or 13 years of age… But does a ceremony and a party make a child an adult? It's been said that a boy becomes a man when he learns that he is not the most important person in his life. This is the story on today's program!

As gay kids we have to get through so much that we end up not remembering a lot of our childhoods. Today we meet K Jason Bryan and we're talking about the book that saved his life: Becoming A Man: Half A Life Story by Paul Monette.Jason is a BPO Vendor Management Analyst and he chairs his company's LGBTQ & Allies ERG. He is a former member of the Governors Board at the Human Rights Campaign. He also served as the Membership Director at Quorum, Minnesota's LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce.Becoming A Man: Half A Life Story won the National Book Award and the LAMBDA Literary Award. Paul Monette was haunted, and finally saved, by a dream, "The thing I'd never even seen: two men in love and laughing." This searingly honest, witty, and humane merging of memoir and manifesto has become the definitive coming out story--and a classic of the coming-of-age genre.Connect with JasonFacebook: facebook.com/kjason.bryanOur BookshopVisit our Bookshop for new releases, current bestsellers, banned books, critically acclaimed LGBTQ books, or peruse the books featured on our podcasts: bookshop.org/shop/thisqueerbookTo purchase Becoming a Man: Half a Life Story visit: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9780060595647Become an Associate Producer!Become an Associate Producer of our podcast through a $20/month sponsorship on Patreon! BIO: Kimberly Flynn, CFA, is a founder and Managing Director of XA Investments, responsible for all product and business development activities.STORY: Kimberly put all her $2,000 savings into a single telecom-dedicated mutual fund at the peak of telecom valuations and saw it go down to 30 cents on the dollar.LEARNING: Don't put all your savings into a single idea. Be diversified, especially when dealing with active manager selection. Know yourself and your risk tolerance. “You've got to feel comfortable making investment decisions, and if you're not, get advice from somebody who can give you the right guidance.”Kimberly Flynn Guest profileKimberly Flynn, CFA, is a founder and Managing Director of XA Investments, where she is responsible for all product and business development activities. XA Investments has a proprietary closed-end platform and a consulting practice to assist clients with developing US and UK-registered closed-end funds. Previously, Kim was Senior Vice President and Head of Product Development for Nuveen Investments' Global Structured Products Group.Kim received her MBA degree from Harvard University and her BBA in Finance and Business Economics, summa cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame in 1999. She also serves as secretary of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Women's board executive committee and on the advisory board of Youth Guidance's Becoming A Man program. She is an active member of the Harvard Club of New York City and the University Club of Chicago, where she serves on the Finance Committee.Worst investment everKimberly made a $2,000 investment into an Invesco telecom-dedicated mutual fund at the peak of telecom valuations. This was in 1999, and very quickly rode it down to 30 cents on the dollar. Kimberly was assured that the telecom sector would be hot based on the research she was doing at the time at Morgan Stanley. This was Kimberly's first investment after graduating college.Lessons learnedBe diversified, especially when dealing with active manager selection.Know yourself and your risk tolerance. You've got to feel comfortable making investment decisions, and if you're not, get advice from somebody who can give you the proper guidance.Andrew's takeawaysSet a long-term plan and methodically contribute to it.Find your investment style and follow it.Actionable adviceTake 80% of the amount you plan to invest and put it into a diversified portfolio. Then, take 20% of it and buy a telecom or crypto fund because experimentation is sometimes helpful. If you lose 20% of your investment, you can recover.Kimberly's recommendationsIf you're working in the financial space, Kimberly recommends checking out resources on her website, XA Investments, to learn more about alternatives. She also recommends reading The Economist or The Financial Times to gain a global perspective.No.1 goal for the next 12 monthsKimberly's number one goal for the next 12 months is to launch new products and take on new prospective consulting clients so she can grow her business.Parting words
