Read this as an article and reply hereBook one-on-one story sessions hereBringing Distant Ones CloseA Spiritual ApproachHow might I connect with the water in Nigeria, Alberta, Costa Rica, Australia? How can I come to understand that this water may well come into my own body?We learn from many spiritual teachings that all beings are in interrelation with each other. We are, as Martin Luther King said (in 1963 from the Birmingham jail) in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.Looking at religion, we find ideas that cause people to consider the wider implication of their actions. There's the concept of karma: simply put, of cause and effect. If I commit harm to another being, I will eventually have to taste that bitter fruit, whether coming from them or someone else, in this life or another. The concept of sin is similar. I may get away with something now, but in the long term, God will punish me for it.Connected with karma, dharma teaches me to do good for the sake of spiritual upliftment. For myself and others. It's not just in dharma: this sense of acting a good way for its own sake can be found in spiritual paths throughout the world.I might approach this in a ceremonial way, bringing cups of water into my sensory space and saying, ‘This is the water of the south. This is the water of the east, of the north, of the west. I am of them, and they are of me.' I might travel by mind to lands affected by resource extraction, travel there and witness their struggles, then consider this when I decide whether or not to get in a car or an airplane.TechnologyWhat are other ways we might bring distant places nearby? There are apps that tell me how much pollution I'm responsible for, and there could be apps that tell me the consequences of my buying this kind of lemon, which comes from 20 miles away, compared to this kind of lemon which comes from 200 miles away, or a thousand. They could tell me who my phone battery is harming. Tt could be mandatory that on every new car there's a label, like descriptions on cigarette packages, listing that product's consequences to people, place and creatures.StoriesStory is another way that we might bring distant beings close. By hearing the stories of refugees in other lands, of those living on islands subsumed by rising sea levels, or of those in the north who cannot hunt as they used to. To hear those stories and imagine myself in their lives, including them in my sense of self and place.Stories bring empathy. So much so that author Lynne Hunt figures that the the modern novel is the basis of the human rights movement. That's quite something. By sitting and deciphering symbols on a page, wide swaths of people learned to enter into the minds of others. Often these ‘readers' came to know characters even better than their families, for fictional minds are transparent. This art form, and the empathy it allows, may have kindled the kinship required to declare that all people have worth. This Green Globe is the Best Dressed in the BallIt wasn't that long ago we first saw photographs of the earth taken from space. That moment was part of a big shift for us, shifting towards a larger awareness: from first and second ethics to the third. And perhaps from here there could be fourth, considering not just our own planet, but other planets, other beings out there ,with whom we are in relation, and to whom we are of consequence. In karate, students are taught to punch through their target; by widening our perspective to other planets, we may take good care of our own. By widening into deep time, we may act well in the times we're in.May we include within my sense of self and place this whole beautiful green, blue, brown, cloudy, watery globe, upon whom we are spinning through space.Story PromptsConsider something you've bought recently. See if you can trace down where the parts of that thing came from: where it was sourced, who helped create it. See if you can find some of the story behind it.Consider work that you do regularly, and a tool that you often use, like a computer. If you can't find specifically where each of the components came from, can you take a guess? Can you learn about some of them, and in so doing learn about the place they came from? You might learn some stories from that place, and come to consider it part of your backyard, part of your responsibility.I'll do the same.In Closing, I'll share a poem.Questionnaire, by Wendell Berry-How much poison are you willing to eat for the success of the free market and global trade? Please name your preferred poisons. For the sake of goodness.-How much evil are you willing to do? Fill in the following blanks with the names of your favorite evils and acts of hatred.-What sacrifices are you prepared to make for culture and civilization? Please list the monuments, shrines, and works of art that you would most willingly destroy.-In the name of patriotism and the flag. How much of our beloved land are you willing to desecrate?-List in the following spaces the mountains, rivers, towns, and farms you could most readily do without.-State briefly the ideas, ideals or hopes, the energy sources, the kinds of security, for which you would kill a child. We look at this timely and relevant book by Leanne Mair. See more about Closing the Gap, How to Include Black Women in any Gender Equity Strategy here. Review of Closing the Gap, How to Include Black Women This seems like a nobrainer, but sometimes obvious ideas are only seen that way once you actively recognise that you have not been looking at something from the right perspective. On one hand if a company fails in this area, you almost want to ask, why on earth are you not actively working to know exactly what your gender and race strategy and percentages are. Why not hire the best people, and work on a colour blind basis? There are clear economic narratives to illustrate that companies who have opportunities for the best employees do better than those who throttle promotion and progression based on gender or colour. At the same time there has been a ridiculous push back where discussions of gender and race neutral policies, or even positive discrimination is then negatively labelled as woke. Trouble is, this narrative is often espoused by old, white males, using dogwhistle, populist policies to try and whip up an aggressive and status quo preserving narrative. Books like this are important, and being aware of your own companies performance in relation to gender and race are invaluable if you wish to have a successful, progressive and forward looking company. This book is well written, accessible, and has the logical, and important chapter towards the end called Making the theoretical practical, which says everything about what your own company policies should be. One to read and be aware of asap. More about the book A clear and accessible framework to accelerate your organization's gender diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in relation to the career development of Black women. Why are gender equality initiatives not helping all women equally? Why does there continue to be a lack of Black women in senior management and leadership? How can the mindsets and strategies of companies whose approach is to focus on gender first, and only then to look at race, be changed to become more intersectional and inclusive? Closing the Gap serves to contextualize how companies unintentionally position Black women in situations where they cannot thrive or reach their full potential. It also shines a light on some of the subversive behaviours which further create tension in employer/employee relations, such as, the absence of a process to highlight issues without repercussions, whether overt or subtle. This exacerbates the one thing most companies are trying to prevent: Black women resigning, taking their unique skillset and experience with them. There hasn't been an explicit guide to understanding these invisible barriers and exactly how they can be recognised, understood and overcome … until now. In Closing the Gap, gender equity leader Leanne Mair focusses on how companies can accelerate their gender diversity, equity and inclusion efforts by identifying the blind spots that can often prevent Black women from reaching their full potential in the workplace. It provides a practical and accessible framework, detailing the current landscape, highlighting the key challenges and remedies, and bringing organisations closer to their goals of an inclusive and equitable culture. More about Leanne Mair Leanne is the founder of management consultancy firm Benefactum Consulting, which is dedicated to supporting companies achieving gender equity in their business. Prior to launching her own company, Leanne worked in asset management for over 15 years before moving into team strategy, with a focus on increasing retention of women in the workplace. She is also the co-founder of The Sororum, a Communities Interest Company that aims to support young women as they move into the workplace. She contributes to DiversityQ magazine and HRZone, and is also a sought-after speaker, having spoken to panels and delivered keynotes for Business Forums Internationa...

In this episode of Phishy Business, we take a look at the skills shortage being faced by IT departments when it comes to hiring cybersecurity experts and how the Absa Cybersecurity Academy is working with its partner, the Maharishi Institute, to assist in helping marginalized South African youth to become certified cybersecurity experts. Together, Absa and the Maharishi Institute are consistently working to develop a sustainable means to give youth the training they need to maintain careers and break the cycle of poverty they have been born into. Our special guests are Shenaaz Abrahams, who has made it her mission to ensure the Absa Academy is giving the most marginalized in her community access to cybersecurity training, and one of the Absa Academy's success stories, student Kerwin Jacobs. In ‘Closing the cybersecurity skills gap through education and opportunity' we discuss: What the Absa Cybersecurity Academy is, and its aim The holistic learning experience at the Maharishi Institute, which includes a lot of self-development and getting to learn things like transcendental meditation Absa's latest partnership with the Hein Wagner Academy and teaching cybersecurity skills to the visually impaired The opportunities for Africa to be a cybersecurity hub and how the continent can help plug the global skills gap while offering employment opportunities in a market with a high unemployment rate Why individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds – like those enrolled at the academy – make good cybersecurity professionals How the academy has impacted Kerwin's life Some inspiring stories about other students enrolled in the academy About Phishy Business Fed up with the same old cybersecurity stories? Come with us on a journey that explores the lesser-known side. Whether it's social engineering, taking criminals to court or the journalists hunting down hackers — our new podcast series, Phishy Business, looks for new ways to think about cybersecurity. Mimecast's very own Brian Pinnock and Alice Jeffery are joined by guests from a range of unique security specialisms. Each episode explores tales of risk, reward and just a dash of ridiculousness to learn how we can all improve in the fight to stay safe. Dan talks about how rather than teaching younger boys "the game," us men should be teaching it to younger girls in order to protect them. Knowledge is power. (2:48) Episode 20 recap. Since P is a father of many, many, m-ma-mm-ma-many children, Dan wanted to know if he fears passing some of the traits of his mental illness on to his children. Since children often learn by watching, it's not hard to believe that they can learn and adopt "abnormal" behavior and think it's normal. For instance, if a parent has OCD and washes their hands 150x per day, their child may think that's normal. Dan shares that he would prefer a Black therapist because of how they're able to relate culturally. P doesn't necessarily agree. (2:14) Episode 17 Recap. (2:55) Genetics vs. Learned Behavior. Disclaimer: This episode gets extremely random, maybe even offensive at times but we had a great time recording it. It's our loosest episode to date. We've both been going through rough times for a little over a month now. P has been off of his psychiatric medication totally for almost 2 years, until about 10 days ago. Recently P's insomnia, depression and heightened anxiety have returned big-time, prompting him to make an appointment with his doctor and be placed back on medication. P talks about what he was going through and his reaction to his medication and some of the altercations he's been in since adjusting to them. Dan has been depressed for the better part of 2 months combined with a feeling of hopelessness and a growing anger/frustration. He comes to the realization that he doesn't live in the present. He spends the present thinking about the past and the future while neglecting what's actually currently happening. This episode was a much needed relief for the both of us because how random it is and our ability to make light of what were pretty serious medical issues, including getting cameras shoved into their urethras and colonoscopies. We had a good time being able to inappropriately joke about these things. (6:59) What's Been Up With P? (16:43) When They See Us. (33:15) P On Drugs. (40:28) Control Issues. A Few Screws Loose: The Podcast

Dan and P discuss second chances. Should past trauma and environmental conditions be taken into consideration when evaluating someone's actions? Many of our community's heros have checkered pasts. People like Tupac, Mike Tyson, Allen Iverson, Michael Vick, Jay-Z etc... have all done things at one point that were criminal in nature. If you look into their upbringings you'll see a lot of similarities. Poverty, trauma, and broken families to name a few. Should their actions be judged the same as someone who didn't share the same experiences? If not for second chances, would they have reached their massive levels of success which allowed them to provide opportunities other people from similar backgrounds? (1:29) Episode 14 Recap. A Few Screws Loose: The Podcast

In episode 14 of "A Few Screws Loose," Dan and P discuss quarter-life and mid-life crises. Much like our peers, we had no guidance growing up and we weren't aware of the many opportunities that were available to us. Dan shares what his earliest aspirations were and why his anxiety and the underlying fear of failure has prevented him from accomplishing them. P shares how he ended up becoming firefighter/EMT and how it ruined his life, leaving him disabled. We also detail a lot of the various jobs we've had over the years good, bad, and funny. Then on a more serious note, we both share how we've had negative physical reactions to our most current jobs and how we feel that we're useless outside of our trades.
