This week Nicola and Di chat with the legendary Steven Bradbury. All of our Australian listeners, and many of our international listeners as well, will remember the epic moment in 2002 when Steven became the first Australian ever to win a Gold medal at the Winter Olympics. It was such a memorable race as Steven came from behind to win the final, and in doing so, created the term ‘Doing a Bradbury’, which was added to the Macquarie Dictionary in 2014. However, there’s so much more to Steven’s story than that one moment, and we were so grateful to be able to hear more about his journey of strength, passion and resilience. In this episode, we chat to Steven about his speed skating career and some of the most heart-stopping moments, including 2 specific crashes where he almost lost his life. It’s incredible to hear Steven talk about the incident in Montreal where he lost ¾ of his blood in 1 minute, and his next significant injury, 18 months out from his final Olympics, when he broke his neck in training. The sheer determination and resilience that Steven showed to keep going and pursue Gold is incredibly inspiring. We also walk through that famous final and unbelievable moment with Steven. What was happening in the lead-up to the race, the strategy that he and his coach decided on, and what it felt like to watch everyone fall over in front of him, win Gold, but have the entire crowd booing because the local favourite had gone down in the fall. We chat about Steven’s new career as a motivational speaker and entrepreneur, the incredible work ethic he has, the way he’s fuelled by adrenaline and the brewery he started, with the best name ever, Last Man Standing. Steven has some great tips on finding your passion, working really hard at it, and not giving up too early. This week Nicola and Di chat with incredible Jodie Hines. Jodie is a wellness entrepreneur, DJ, mother and community builder who has turned many of her life’s challenges into thriving not just surviving. She’s inspiring women through movement, music, connection and resilience. From creating spaces that empower others to navigating personal loss with strength and grace, she brings warmth, energy and authenticity into everything she does. She’s the founder of Positive Energy, where we will be hosting our Over The Back Fence Disco, and we were thrilled to chat with her and share her story. In this episode we hear about Jodie’s beautiful (yet slightly chaotic) upbringing as one of 8 kids. Jodie loved being part of a big family and her childhood was full of love and happiness, until at the age of 11, her whole world changed when her dad died by suicide. We talk about the challenging years that followed, with Jodie’s mum remarrying and ending up in a domestically violent relationship. We then hear about Jodie’s own struggles, as she also found herself in not one, but two abusive relationships. Thankfully, Jodie also had a knight in shining armour on her side, and we hear the beautiful love story of the man that helped Jodie escape her dangerous relationship and how they fell in love. The most uplifting thing about Jodie’s story is that she was able to take all of her pain and turn it into purpose. Through her own journey of healing, Jodie discovered so many modalities that help improve someone’s physical and mental wellbeing, and with the support of her husband, she was able to create her dream wellness space, Positive Energy, where she brings all of this together. Jodie’s purpose is to bring people joy, connect them through community and help them feel safe, happy and as though they belong (and she’s certainly succeeded in that!). The Power Of Synergy with Gabrielle Cardona Human Connection, Positive Energy, and Rebuilding Relationships in an AI-Driven World From Life Coaching to Relationship Coaching In this episode of The Power of Synergy, Gabrielle Cardona introduces herself as a relationship coach who originally began as a life coach because she believed the mental health industry often focused too much on labels, problems, and medication rather than strengths, success, and practical growth. She explains that her early coaching goal was to help people “score in the game of life” by identifying where they were, defining where they wanted to go, and building strategies to succeed. Over time, she realized that nearly every coaching issue—career, health, money, time management, or personal growth—had one common factor: relationships. Technology, AI, and the Loss of Human Presence Gabrielle argues that technology, social media, and artificial intelligence have damaged people's ability to be physically and emotionally present with one another. She says computers and devices may make life easier in some ways, but they cannot replace human connection, eye contact, conversation, body language, voice, and shared time. She contrasts older generations who remember life without constant technology with younger people who feel dependent on devices, and she warns that “social media” often functions as anti-social media. Her larger concern is that people are becoming isolated even while surrounded by others. Animals, Emotional Substitutes, and the Human Need to Bond A recurring theme in the episode is Gabrielle's concern that some people now use pets as substitutes for human relationships. She says animals can offer affection and comfort, but they cannot fill the deeper human need for substantive connection with other people. Gabrielle specifically discusses seeing people treat pets like children and argues that this places an unhealthy emotional burden on animals while avoiding the work required to build real human bonds. For her, human beings need appreciation, respect, trust, communication, and shared purpose in order to truly bond. The Principles of Synergy Gabrielle explains several coaching principles behind her idea of synergy. She says there is no neutral energy: people are either positive or negative, and they are either moving toward others or away from them. She encourages listeners to ask whether people feel better or worse after interacting with them. She also describes synergy as more than cooperation, using number examples to show that people working together can create exponentially greater results than individuals working separately. To achieve this, people must communicate, understand one another's personalities, recognize different strengths, and decide who is best suited for each role. Personality, Marriage, Parenting, and Real Connection Gabrielle connects synergy to personality differences, especially through Myers-Briggs-style profiles and the idea of dominant, auxiliary, tertiary, and inferior functions. She says people should learn what they and others naturally do well, then use those differences constructively instead of criticizing them. She applies this to her own marriage of more than 30 years, describing how she and her husband make time to reconnect, talk through issues, avoid going to bed angry, and keep their relationship strong. She also shares stories about her children to show how private jokes, shared reading, time together, and technology-free moments can create lasting emotional bonds. Positive Energy, Service, and Practical Relationship Tools Toward the end, Gabrielle discusses spiritual principles such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, and self-control, saying these qualities create healthier relationships and reduce conflict. She also shares her experience working with people at a shelter in Phoenix, explaining that when she offered coaching without a political or selfish agenda, residents and staff began to trust her intentions. She closes by directing listeners to her coaching resources and books, including work on marriage, life success, and personality, while encouraging them to use positive energy, self-awareness, and human connection to improve their relationships and communities.

This week Nicola and Di chat with the inspiring Olympian Kerri Pottharst OAM. Kerri delivered one of Australia's most iconic sporting moments, when she won Gold with her partner Natalie Cook in beach volleyball, playing in front of 10,000 fans on the sands of Bondi beach at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. However, there’s more to Kerri than just the medals. Beyond being an elite athlete, she’s also a talented speaker, an author, a mindset coach, a commentator and a mum and we loved getting to hear her story in this episode.We chatted to Kerri about how she got started in beach volleyball, which is a remarkable story of turning a rock bottom moment into one of the most incredible chapters of her life. After injuring herself in indoor volleyball, she decided to give beach volleyball a go, despite the fact that she doesn’t even like sand - and the rest is history! Kerri shares so many incredible mindset tips, including how she turned things around after a terrible injury, got clear on her goals, wrote them down, visualised them every day, got the right group of people around her and worked towards achieving her dream. There’s so much we can all learn from Kerri around creating a winning mindset and going after what we want in life! We also chatted about Kerri’s choice to really challenge herself as she got older and compete on SAS Australia - one of the most physically grueling things you can do. She shared how it was important to her to inspire older women and show them that we can still challenge ourselves and try new things as we age. Kerri also opens up about finding love again, and the beautiful way she met her partner while on holiday in Hawaii - it’s a great story you’ll want to hear! Johann is an award-winning journalist and the author of 5 books that have sold millions of copies across the world and been translated into 40 languages. He has spent many years pulling at threads most of us don’t even realise we’re tangled in. From addiction to attention spans and depression, the invisible forces shaping how we live, Johann’s insightful words have spread all over the world, through not only his books, but his TED talks that have been viewed more than 93 million times and his appearances on some of the world’s leading podcasts and shows. In this episode, Johann opens up about his early childhood and gives us an insight into what life was like for him as a young boy. I wanted to share his interview as a means of paying my respects to my friend.If you listened to the two Seems Sus episodes, you will know that my friend and co-host Ed is a mainstay. Ed's wife has redeveloped a tumor on her brain, which is not the first time this has happened, and is currently working on rehabilitation and will soon begin chemotherapy treatments. This week Nicola and Di chat with wanderlust traveler Barry Hoffner. Barry is the author of Amazon’s number 1 adventure travel book, Belonging To The World. In 2017, Barry’s whole world changed when his wife Jackie was in a tragic accident involving an elephant while volunteering in Africa with WildAid. After she passed away, Barry had to remain strong for his 2 sons, yet through his own healing journey, he discovered so much about life, kindness, and connection and it opened his eyes to a new world. Rather than bury his grief, which Barry says can mute the possibility of feeling joy again, his healing journey inspired him to travel to 193 countries - that’s every country on earth! In this episode we hear how Barry’s love of travel was first ignited with a chance back-packing trip to Europe after high school. From that moment, Barry knew he wanted to see the world. He tells us about his career in investment banking, which allowed him to live and work in cities such as Buenos Aires, Paris, Tokyo, Singapore, London, Zurich, Mexico City and Moscow. We also hear the beautiful story of how Barry met his late wife Jackie, and the moment they declared their love for each other outside the Taj Mahal. They went on to have 2 sons and raise a beautiful family, and were just about to enjoy their first trip as empty nesters when tragedy struck and Jackie was killed on a volunteering trip in Africa. Barry describes the moment that he found out, and how his life would never be the same again. Barry’s journey from grief to connection over the last 8 years has been remarkable and he shares so many incredible stories of the amazing moments he’s had in countries so many of us will only dream of visiting. He shares the moment that made his heart beat the most, and we also ask for some of his best travel tips, including where he had the best coffee - you’ll never guess where it was! We also talk to Barry about the empowering charity he set up in 2010 called Caravan to Class. This week Nicola and Di chat with talented filmmaker Jasmin Tarasin and lead actress Maeve Dermody about their new film Life Could Be A Dream. Jasmin is an award-winning filmmaker and artist who creates emotionally charged heartfelt stories driven by humanity and honesty. She is passionate about creating change in gender equality through storytelling in every part of her work. Maeve is an accomplished actress who starred in her first film at the age of 5 and has been acting ever since in television, theatre and films in both Australia and Britain. Every so often a story comes along that really sticks with you and sparks a bigger conversation. Life Could Be A Dream, already winning Best Independent Film at the Montreal Film Festival, is one of those films. It’s a powerful, intimate film that uses storytelling to shine a light on coercive control, financial abuse and those quieter patterns that can sit underneath relationships. It’s also a story of hope and resilience about how we can start to see things more clearly and make different choices moving forward. In this episode we chat to Jasmin about her work leading up to this film and what inspired her to tell a story about coercive control. We talk about what coercive control actually is, how you can recognise the subtle patterns or signs of it, and importantly, we also go through some of the very practical steps you can take to regain your own financial agency. We talk to Maeve about what it was like making the film, the beautiful cinematography, the powerful story and how we both felt when we watched it. It’s a film that really moved us, and even though it tackles a heavy topic, it does so in such a thoughtful and gentle way. As Jasmin says in this chat, she sees the film as a story of hope, family and resilience and as a love song to young men. This week Nicola and Di chat with inspiring storyteller John Fuje. John is a First Nations man with a deep connection to storytelling culture and country. He works in environmental services as a senior coordinator, and is an AI and drone technology specialist, using these tools in practical ways to help track sharks, turtles and other marine life along the coastline. The amazing thing about John is the way he blends thousands of years of indigenous wisdom about country and Mother Nature, with the most modern AI tools to find new ways of looking after our planet. John is also a devoted husband, father and grandfather with so much love for his family. Nicola and Di were introduced to John when he was brought in to spot sharks on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. After inviting him for what they thought would be a 20 minute coffee, which turned into 2 hours, they decided that everyone needed to hear John’s stories. In this episode we hear the incredible story of how John was able to combine his deep knowledge of country with drone technology that would help him track the movements of sharks and other marine life. We ask him about the recent increase in shark attacks along Sydney’s coastline, and whether there are more sharks in the water - John’s answer may surprise you! Dr. Shefali is a world-renowned clinical psychologist, international parenting expert, and a New York Times bestselling author of 7 books including The Conscious Parent, The Parenting Map and A Radical Awakening among others. She’s also the host of the Parenting & You podcast, founder of the Conscious Parenting movement and has been a guest several times on Super Soul with Oprah. In this episode we talk to Dr. Shefali about what it means to be a conscious parent and how you can become aware of your patterns and belief systems by recognising that your child is a mirror to your unresolved issues. It’s not only our children, we talk about the powerful way that all relationships are like mirrors that show us where we still have places to heal and lessons to learn. Dr. Shefali shares some great examples from her own life as a parent, and how we can practically begin to break down our patterns and not project our expectations onto our children. She helps us understand that there’s no such thing as a perfect parent or a perfect human - we are all learning and evolving. Let's be honest. The world feels a little nuts right now. Divided. Loud. Unsettled. Tired. And organizations don't exist outside of that. They absorb it. So in this episode, we ask a simple but uncomfortable question: What does OD need to be when the world feels like it's coming apart? And maybe even harder… How do we act hopeful when we don't always feel hopeful ourselves? That's not fluff. That's leadership. Instead of offering grand theories, we get practical. We suggest starting here: Stop trying to fix everything. Start by finding the energy. In every organization — even the messy ones — there are pockets of good energy. People who still care. Teams that still want to build something better. Conversations that feel constructive instead of draining. If you think in systems, you know this is true. OD's job? Go find that energy. Name it. Amplify it. Build from it. We also talk about diagnosing energy instead of just diagnosing problems. Ask: • Where do people feel most alive? • Where do meetings feel productive? • Where is there momentum — even if it's small? Energy is data. And then we double down on participation. Because when people help shape the way forward, they create the hope they're looking for. Participation isn't soft. It's catalytic. We close with a practical exercise inspired by Power vs. Force by David Hawkins — a simple way to surface the life-giving energies (like courage and willingness) versus the draining ones (like fear and blame) that may be shaping your culture more than you realize. Consider this episode another tool for your toolkit. Not because we have all the answers. But because in chaotic times, OD isn't just about alignment and strategy. It's about stewarding energy. How aggrieved did we feel about making the bed? Had to make mine with the hospital tuck — it absolutely sucked.That felt aggro. I'm stressed — I don't have much in the tank this morning.But!
