This week we are looking at the psychology behind why a person would confess to a crime that they never committed. We discuss the categories of false confessions including voluntary, persuaded or internalized, and compliant false confessions. We also discuss examples of cases where someone has falsely confessed including the JonBenet Ramsey case, the murder of Hartmut Hagan, the Satanic abuse case against Paul Igram, the West Memphis 3 case and the Central Park 5. And Darren's mother wants her son to work the case.Disillusioned by an America forever changed by the presidency of Donald Trump, Darren reluctantly agrees. Yet as he sets out to find a girl whose family don't want her found, it is his own family's history that may be brought painfully into the light.

Jharrel Jerome made Emmy history when he won television's top prize for his work in Ava DuVernay's "When They See Us." Just 21 years old, Jerome became the youngest person to win Lead Actor in a Limited Series and the first Afro-Latino actor to be nominated for and win an Emmy in any category. Five years later, Jerome has returned to the awards race, playing a 13-foot-tall man in Boots Riley's genre-bending "I'm a Virgo." The "Sorry to Bother You" filmmaker turns to television with a coming-of-age story that is equal parts heart-warming, thought-provoking, and evocative. A sharp satire about capitalism, race, and media (among many other things), Jerome infuses the many turns of Riley's script with empathy, tenderness, and seriously impressive range. In conversation with Next Best Picture, Jerome is deep in thought, and his curiosity and humanity as an actor and artist are on full display. He discusses capturing the psyche and physicality of a larger-than-life yet vulnerable character and trusting in Riley's vision for "I'm a Virgo," a collaboration that has yielded some of the year's best television. Please be sure to check out "I'm a Virgo," which is available to stream on Prime Video and is up for your consideration in all eligible Emmy categories. Thank you, and enjoy! In September of 2019 Diverse Voice Book Review host Hopeton Hay interviewed Attica Locke, author of HEAVEN, MY HOME. Republishing this interview is part of DVBR's Celebration of Black Authors for Black History Month. Attica was the first African American writer to win the Edgar Award for Best Novel from the Mystery Writers of America with her 2017 novel, BLUEBIRD, BLUEBIRD.With HEAVEN MY HOME, Locke continues her exploration of race and racism in America through the prism of her crime novels. She displays it through her protagonist's reception by the local towns people in Jefferson, Texas. She also explores it through the debate his uncles that raised him engaged in on, and I quote, whether forgiveness made black folks saints or stooges. She also includes as an integral part of her story a historic black community in the area, Hopetown, that was founded by blacks after the civil war and is home also to Caddo Indians. Attica Locke is the award winning author of five novels and a screenwriter. Her novel, Bluebird, Bluebird, was the Winner of the Mystery Writers of America 2018 Edgar Award for Best Novel. She was also a writer and producer on the Emmy Award winning Netflix series about the Central Park Five, When They See Us.
It's one of the world's most consequential diplomatic relationships. The U.S. and Israel have been steadfast allies for decades. Now that enduring relationship faces its greatest test. The horrific civilian death toll in Gaza - more than 25,000 Palestinians now dead - is fracturing relations. Both openly and behind-the-scenes, the Biden administration is asking Israel to use greater restraint in its assault in Gaza, while also pushing for a post-war peace plan. But it seems prime minister netanyahu is in no mood for listening, repeatedly rejecting calls for a Palestinian state. Daniel Levy - a former Israeli peace negotiator - says Biden's handling of the Gaza crisis has done ‘tremendous self-harm' to America's global leadership image. Then, filmmaker Ava DuVernay has made exploring racism in America her life's work. Hits like ‘Selma' and ‘When They See Us' have earned her global acclaim. Now her new movie ‘Origin' - based on Isabel Wilkerson's groundbreaking book ‘Caste' - takes things beyond the U.S., drawing parallels with Nazi Germany and India's caste system. Duvernay discusses her new movie with Christiane, and reacts to the Barbie director Greta Gerwig's Oscar snub. With the eyes of the world focused on Gaza, Ukraine is fighting for attention as supplies and ammunition run dangerously low in its fight against Putin's Russian invaders. CNN Senior International Correspondent Fred Pleitgen shows us the situation on the ground. Also in this episode, the U.S. made more than a hundred space launches last year, but the Artemis moon missions have suffered a string of setbacks and delays. Christiane asks NASA number two Pam Melroy, who is one of only two women to command a space shuttle, if America is falling behind its rivals in the race to return to the moon. In the Amanpour Archive this week, we show you how Israeli settlements have long been problematic in the path to peace. And in Ask Amanpour, Christiane fields a question about the danger of the war in Ukraine losing the world's attention. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In the movie, Wilkerson embarks on a journey to learn about caste - traveling to Germany and India to get to the root of the Black experience in America. DuVernay also directed 13th, When They See Us, and Selma.
The filmmaker Ava DuVernay has a reputation for tackling challenging material about America's troubled past. She depicted the bloody fight to achieve equal voting rights for African Americans in her 2014 film “Selma”; examined the prison-industrial complex in her 2016 Peabody Award-winning documentary “13th”; and portrayed the wrongful conviction of five teen-age boys of color in the miniseries “When They See Us.” But “Origin,” her first narrative feature film in five years, may be her most ambitious work to date. “This breaks every screenwriting rule, every rule of filmmaking that I know,” DuVernay tells David Remnick. “Origin” is an adaptation of the journalist Isabel Wilkerson's best-seller “Caste,” a complex analysis of racism and social structures. “Caste” lacks a cinematic narrative structure, and so “Origin” positions Wilkerson as its subject as she navigates the intellectual journey of the book. DuVernay felt compelled to make this movie now, in part because she thought that its message would be vital for audiences in a Presidential election year when the understanding of America's past is very much at issue. “We have to wake up and focus—focus on what is happening,” DuVernay says. “And I want this film to contribute to that conversation.”
Editor - Michelle Tesoro, ACE MAESTRO editor Michelle Tesoro is no stranger to cutting movies directed by actors. In fact, it was while she was working with actor Sean Penn on his film FLAG DAY, that Penn turned to Michelle and told her that he just texted friend Bradley Cooper that she was a "goddess in the cutting room". Clearly that pitch worked as Cooper entrusted Michelle with the editorial duties for his much-anticipated biopic. “Be sneaky and read every script that you can get your hands on. If you can work in a studio, read the original draft, read the revisions, see how the script got to the final script. That's what I was doing. I would use the opportunities of working in that system to learn,” says screenwriter Julian Breece on Final Draft's Write On Podcast. Julian, along with Dustin Lance Black, wrote Rustin, the new biopic about little-known civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, played exquisitely by actor Colman Domingo. Rustin, alongside Martin Luther King, helped make the 1963 March on Washington a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement, while dealing with racism and homophobia as an out gay Black man in the 1960s. Julian shares his inspiration for writing the film, Bayard Rustin's belief in non-violent civil disobedience and what it was like working with Ava DuVernay on the Netflix series When They See Us. Julian also talks about sneaking his own scripts into the reading pile while he was working at Disney and other risks he took to help jumpstart his career. Take a listen to the podcast to see what you can learn from Justin's journey.

Joaquina Kalukango received the 2022 Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for her performance as Nelly O'Brien in Paradise Square. She received a 2020 Tony Award nomination for her performance in the critically acclaimed Broadway production of Slave Play. For that production she also received an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Actress, and Broadway.com listed her as one of the top five performers (male or female) of the year. Kalukango is a 2021 SAG Award nominee for Cast in a Motion Picture for her role as Betty X opposite Kingsley Ben-Adir in Regina King's directorial debut, One Night in Miami. She had a recurring role on the HBO series Lovecraft Country. Other TV credits include Ava DuVernay's Netflix series When They See Us and Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia, directed by Kenny Leon. Additional Broadway credits include The Color Purple, Holler If Ya Hear Me, and Godspell.
By her early thirties, Ava DuVernay was already a successful entrepreneur, having founded her own film publicity agency in Los Angeles. But after years of watching other people make films, she started to get an itch to tell her own stories onscreen. Ava's first films were rooted in deeply personal experiences: growing up with her sisters in Compton, performing Hip Hop at Open Mic Night at the Good Life Café in L.A. Her self-funded and self-distributed projects began to draw attention, and in 2012, Ava won the award for best directing at the Sundance Film Festival. She went on to direct powerful projects like Selma, 13th, and When They See Us; and through her production and distribution company ARRAY, she's created a movement that is helping change how movies are made—and who gets to make them. This episode was produced by Rachel Faulkner, with music by Ramtin Arablouei.Edited by Neva Grant, with research help from Liz Metzger. You can follow HIBT on Twitter & Instagram, and email us at hibt@id.wondery.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

So excited to share my rich and nuanced convo with Attica and Tembi Locke. I discovered this dynamic sister duo after devouring their Netflix limited series, FROM SCRATCH, starring Zoe Saldana. Once my tear ducts could no longer produce any more tears, I immediately had to find out who was behind this beautiful show. Tembi is a New York Times best-selling author, TV producer, actor, and screenwriter. Her memoir, From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home, is a 2019 Reese's Book Club pick and NYT bestseller. The biographical film, Chevalier, is based on the life of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges – a Black, French composer and violinist of the 1700s. As the movie unfolds, there's an intriguing line spoken by Chevalier, in which the lead character, played by actor Kelvin Harrison Jr., states, “I realized… the more I excelled, the less I was alone.” With those resounding words, combined with a riveting film score, an interesting takeaway begins to emerge: Excellence is the best deterrent to racism. Join us as host Eddie Robinson chats unguarded with the film's composer, Kris Bowers. The Emmy Award-winning musician – whose work includes the score to the Oscar-winning film, Green Book; the biographical sports movie, King Richard; and Netflix hit dramas, When They See Us, and Bridgerton – offers up a candid conversation centered around the reasons why Chevalier and the lives of so many other persons of color, along with their contributions to art and culture, are left out of the larger historical narrative. Bowers also reveals to I SEE U how he felt his career was being ‘categorized' and limited by the kinds of projects presented to him. An accomplished photographer and filmmaker himself, he also shares deep introspection surrounding his Oscar-nominated short film, A Concerto Is a Conversation, which received critical acclaim for its portrayal of race in America, as the story of the relationship with his grandfather is pieced together through music.
We have a very special guest: Patrick Gallo! You can find him acting in The Offer, The Irishmen, When They See Us and many more critically acclaimed shows and movies. He tells us his first hand experience being a patient.

My guest today is Bill Mims, a graduate of Full Sail University in the Recording Engineering program. In 2001, he spent a year in Orlando doing live sound, as well as an internship at a post production facility before moving to LA in 2002 and getting hired by Sunset Sound where he worked his way up the ranks and was an assistant engineer by the end of 2004. He became proficient in Pro Tools, as well as analog tape machines. Between 2004 and 2010, Bill worked with some of the most famous artists in the world at Sunset Sound. Bill left Sunset and went freelance in 2011. Since then, he has done engineering and producing work for many artists. He has been lucky enough to have been a part of many Grammy winning projects, two of which Bill earned statues for (Jimmy Cliff-Best Reggae 2012 and Ben Harper/Charlie Musselwhite-Best Blues 2013). Bill has worked on several films, two of which have either won or been nominated for an Oscar (The Theory Of Everything-Best Original Music Score 2015, Sicario-Nominated for Best Original Music Score 2016). Bill has also worked on TV shows, including Transparent, which has won Emmy and Golden Globe awards. Some recent work includes Mrs. America, For Life, and When They See Us. Recent albums would be the last few Morrissey albums, Death Cab, and I produced 2 albums for Megan Mullally. Thanks so much to Howard Willing for making our introduction.
