Hello, Beautiful ppl! Back with another exciting episode where I give you a little glimpse of the type of questions I would answer in some of my Journal Entries. Text us is you have a question for Matt or a guest. We want to hear from you. This week's episode was prompted by a quote I read in the book, Buddhism Without Beliefs, by Stephen Batchelor. The chapter on imagination began with this quote, "A talent for speaking differently, rather than arguing well, is the chief instrument of cultural change." In other words, we create change by first seeing a different future in our mind's eye and then speaking that vision out loud. This is very different from arguing about what is or has been, it's about declaring what can and will be in the future. I talk about how this approach of speaking differently applies to our ongoing conversation about Termination of Parental Rights, and how it can apply to anything that we may be working on. I lay out five steps that I've seen work for me and others that moves us from imagining and describing the future, to taking action, and then learning and iterating. I also reference a great resource, which is linked below, that can help us develop the skills of generative communication and declarations. I end the episode with a few journal prompts. Journal PromptsWhat do I want to declare? Who am I without the work? Who am I? Psalm 23 is a powerful journal entry by David that emphasizes themes of comfort, rest, and guidance provided by God, portrayed as a shepherd. Chris appreciates the Psalms for their stand-alone thoughts and feelings, likening them to personal journal entries of his own. Hear how this Psalm resonates Chris's life experiences, particularly feelings of insecurity and the journey of personal growth. The passage explores the idea of rest in God, drawing parallels to Jesus's invitation to the weary.Chris poses three key questions regarding one's life journey:1. **What do you lack?** - Emphasizing trust in God as a source of rest and assurance that believers "lack nothing" under His guidance.2. **Where is your life directing you?** - Highlighting the importance of recognizing the narrow paths leading to Jesus, who offers abundant life despite life's challenges.3. **Are you being a participant or a spectator?** - Encouraging engagement in one's relationship with God, living with purpose, and finding peace amid struggles."A Journal Entry" taught by Chris SimningFor the full gathering of this message which includes worship, visit our Youtube channel. In this week's journal episode, I share the origin story of my search for the world's best chocolate chip cookie. This is not the first time I've been on this search. Sometime around 2007 I found the best cookie in the world and the search was over. When I left my job in 2022, I began to reflect on how I was living my life and decided to map the different dimensions of who I am to see where I was compromising myself. I talk about my process, what I realized, and why it led me to return to the search for the world's best chocolate chip cookie. Spoiler alert, the best cookie from 2007 has yet to be dethroned. Tune in to find out where you can find that cookie. And, if you have a contender, please let me know. This time, the search continues....I end the episode with a few journal prompts that you might find helpful, which I'll include here. Am I living a life that is a full expression of all of who I am? Am I compromising parts of who I am? Is this how I want to be? Are there parts of who I am that I want to invest in and express more? Today's episode is much more personal and emotional that most. I recorded this on the four-year anniversary of losing my cousin and friend, Patrick. I wanted to honor him and our relationship. I also tell the story of how Patrick's death led to me and "Tex" (this show's producer) reconnecting after 10-12 years. In that one phone call, we sparked a creative partnership that has led to three podcasts and developed a meaningful friendship that extends well beyond these shows. The reflections I share remind me of why it's so important to develop the skill of self-awareness and the emotional ingredients of humility, curiosity, and adaptability. Our future is constantly emerging and if we recognize it and act on it, we can live a life that is aligned with who we truly are. I recorded this week's journal episode about 15 minutes after the weekly Proximity Podcast Club ended. I had a plan for this week's episode but the conversation that played out in the Podcast Club changed my plan. One of our goals for this show is to use it as a platform to build community and then have conversations with that community that help people progress in their own process. The Podcast Club is a big part of how we do this. And one of our new members, Zabrina, prompted a new idea of using the Podcast Club as a community workshopping space. In other words, members bring a specific topic to the Club and engage the group in a conversation that raises critical questions, offers new perspectives, reality tests ideas, provides a mirror, etc. We did this for the first time with Zabrina and it was incredibly valuable, it is something we will continue to do. Zabrina was workshopping a keynote she is preparing and I end the episode with four things to consider when communicating a message to 1,000 people in a keynote or the 5 people who work on your team. Having one key message that you want to leave people with is one of the key elements. I checked Snopes and just recently this rumor was determined to be true! Ashley Biden confirmed the veracity of the journal when she complained that it could be read online. She was going through AA at the time and recognized she had trauma, talks about being sexualized and having sex with their friends at an early age, and not being comfortable about going to a certain person's house. The significance of sharing our experiences of healing and recovery post a relationship with a covert narcissist cannot be underestimated. Understanding what happens to each of us (after the narcissist) as a shared experience can alleviate that crushing deception that the experience is unique and we alone are the problem. To feel like you always need to be preforming is an exhausting and unrealistic measure to try to pursue. It would be like driving a car but only allowing the gas pedal to be full bore, all the time, no time to slow down. That might work on the high way, but what about when you need to adjust, pivot, stop for gas? You need to be able to adapt, adjust, turn smoothly (and safely). You need to be able to process when & where to make these adjustments. It's like the tortoise and the hare. There is a time for head down, all out, energy. But if that's the only mode you operate in, you will get to a place where your identity is in that “hustle and grind” mentality. You'll be digging yourself a hole that's not easily able to adjust from. If you believe the ONLY way to do something is one specific way, I believe you're limiting yourself for what's actually possible. Your actual making it more difficult, putting up these unintentional “blinders” that will cause you NOT to grow. You are speeding down the freeway at 85 mph, with only one goal in mind. Great but what about your family? Values? Health? Finances? No life won't be balanced, and yes we need goals and focus. But the HOW we are executing is, makes a world of a difference. Please don't go ask your high school friend if your goals are realistic or obtainable.. they need to stretch you. They need to push you past what you think you're capable of. They are dreams. They are future goals. That means your present self is not capable of currently achieving the goal.Hence future. That is why you need to pay attention to HOW you are showing up today, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year and determine, “am I truly doing what it takes to achieve it?” Am I being consistent and disciplined? Am I resting and being mindful? Have I shaped my environment to support me? Am I staying connected to God and praying for His will for my life? Am I doing what it takes? WHILE enjoying life and truly transforming as a person. Gosh this road is not black and white. It's up and down, stop and go, light and dark, peaks and valleys. Happiness and tears in the same day. Crying out to God with “why?!” And also the ultimate praise and gratitude for all the blessings. It's knowing you'll never fully arrive at the destination. It's a hungry for life. A determination to become all that you are capable of, while knowing you'll never reach it. So, take a moment, be present and breath deeply. Because if you're actually here for this ride, it'll last a life time. It's in Gods hands, have faith and go out there one day at a time to become the next level version you were meant to be.

As a career macro-level social worker, I've arrived at a major shift in perspective. The unit of change is more about people than policy. Today's episode is about how I came to the idea that systems don't change until people change. In other words, I believe that systems change strategies are important, but they are insufficient in advancing justice for families. I share how the strategies I've worked on ran up against very real limitations in their ability to improve the well-being of children or parents and keep families together. When we change the structures of the system are we solving the right problem? I wrap with some of my practices for how I am changing so that my work is in service of people rather than systems. Even if you live somewhere that doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving, you can still do this simple gratitude exercise: Naming and appreciating the smaller "everyday" things that often get overlooked when they run RIGHT or are healthy. Things like: - Your car - Your favorite piece of clothing - Your internet connection - Your dog/cat/pet - Your phone - Your memberships/courses you already own - Your kitchen appliances... Follow along - and bring a journal! - as I use the following gratitude prompt: "What am I doing with what I've GOT?... Instead of crying over what I don't have and wishing my life were different: What am I doing with what I've already GOT? The more gratitude I have for my resources, the more they will grow. Here are things I'm grateful for (that I sometimes take for granted)." One thing that would make me really grateful? Leave a review for this podcast! I know you've heard that a hundred times, but it really REALLY is true: when you leave a review, it ACTUALLY helps the people making them! It tells the Podcast Gods that this is a podcast worth listening to and helps others discover it. It costs ya nothing but 30 seconds of your time and it MAKES MY WEEK when I read new reviews! Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate! Connect with me on Instagram at: http://www.instagram.com/kelsey.writes
Today's episode starts with me reading straight from my journal. I read the "day one" entry from August 8, 2022, when I made the decision to leave my job. What follows are some reflections about whether or not I've stayed true to what I set out to do. The episode ends with a bit about my daily journaling practice and how it continues to bring me so much value. As always, you are invited to join the Proximity Podcast Club, a growing community of people who are supporting one another through their own process. As a non-profit executive, I spent a lot of time developing, reviewing, and managing budgets. It was a weekly activity. But I never considered budgets as moral documents, until now. In this episode, I share where I first heard the idea, how I've been thinking about it, and how I'm applying it in my work with Proximity Design Studio clients. I also mention a recent blog post from Alia Innovations that offers some prompt questions that I think can spark healthy dialogue within organizations. I've included the link in the show notes. Today's episode is just a little bit different. I've decided that I'm going to release a mini episode every other week. I'm going to give you a little behind the scenes into my process, like an audio entry from my daily journal. These episodes will be insights into my process, reflections from the prior episode, or maybe something that is happening in my work with Proximity Design Studio. But more than anything, these episodes are an invitation to you to join the community and conversation that I'm building off the podcast platform. I'm hosting Monday morning live calls to discuss episodes and build community. Find me on LinkedIn to get updates on the Monday morning live calls.
