On this episode, I talk to Monste Olmos about her work as a birth worker, and the ways that she uses herbs and other ancestral practices to support people's reproductive experiences. We talk about abortion being an ancestral practice, something that has happened all throughout history, before western medicine and the advent of abortion pills. Montse shares her experiences around pregnancy and abortion, and we talk about what it means to share our stories and knowledge publicly. Montse Olmos (she/her) was born in Mexico City and grew up in the states of Nuevo León andTamaulipas. She comes from a mixed lineage and identifies as Totonaca-Nahuatl. Trained byAncient Song Doula Services, she is a Full-Spectrum Birth Companion (with a focus on fertility, abortion, postpartum and everyting in between) for QTBIPOC folx. Montse is passionate about addressing racism within the birth community and globally. She created the first-of-its-kind online course titled, Cultural Appropriation in Rebozo Work, which addresses the decolonial history of this sacred textile and connects it to anti-racism education. Montse is also an international speaker on Indigenous sovereignty and autonomy as well as issues such as extractivism and the commodification of Indigenous knowledge and traditions. She has presented her work at the National Midwifery Institute, The Educated Birth and the SIAParto Conference in Brazil, to name a few. Currently, Montse is an abortion educator at DOPO, a UK-based organization dedicated to providing abortion support and educational resources to all gender birthing people. In addition, she provides mentorship to other Doulas at Manhattan Birth. When she's not investing her time in birth work, Montse cultivates corn, beans, squash and medicinal herbs. She also performs traditional music with her band, Grupo Tepeyolohtli, is a traditional danzante, and homeschools her two daughters.Links:Montse's Instagram: @mujer_dela_tierraMontse's Linktree (with offerings & ways to support her work)Herbal Abortion Intro ClassMontse's PatreonAncient Song Doula ServicesAbortion, with loveWebsiteInstagram: @abortionwithloveTwitter: @AbortionWithLuv
Young people face specific barriers to accessing abortion services, and we need to be providing abortion services that are tailored to the specific needs of young people. So how do we provide abortion services and abortion support to young people in a way that recognises the diversity of young people's experiences? On today's episode Carly and I talk about providing abortion services to young people, and how we can do better in being adult companions and supporting young people in their abortion experiences. We talk about adultcentrism in abortion work, how abortion movement work and services are often led by and tailored to adults and as a result, we risk infantilising young people and assuming certain things about their reproductive lives and decision making capacity based on their age.Carly Manes (she/her) is a white, queer, Jewish full-spectrum doula from New York. She has always believed that young people deserve transparency when it comes to information about their sexual health and bodies. Carly has been a practicing abortion doula for over six years, supporting more than 2,000 individuals during their in-clinic procedures. She loves the beach, chicken tenders, and her communities. She lives with her partner Mo and their playful pitbull Mickey.Links:"What's An Abortion, Anyway" Book by Carly Manes & EmulsifyEpisode 17 of Abortion, with Love: "What's An Abortion, Anyway?" On today's episode you'll hear Lou tell her abortion story. Lou doesn't feel like her abortion was her choice. It was what her boyfriend at the time wanted, and because she loved him and trusted him, she felt like that was the right thing to do. It's been almost two years since her abortion, and Lou is still grieving, still having a hard time moving on from this experience. She's grieving not just the loss of the pregnancy, but the loss of agency and choice. She's not sure what she would have decided if she was given the opportunity to choose. But she was never given that opportunity.Lou felt very lonely throughout this whole process, she felt like she couldn't tell anyone what she was going through. She hopes that by sharing her story, others who are going through similar experiences will see that they are not alone.
Let's just say, my Mum wasn't thrilled when I told her I was starting a podcast about abortion. I think she wishes I'd spend this time and energy working towards preventing unwanted pregnancies. But the podcast has given us the opportunity to talk about our disagreements, to listen to each other, and to open up about our own experiences around pregnancy and loss. These conversations haven't been easy, but I like to think that they've helped us get closer, and learn to accept our differences and still support and love each other. Now, my Mum is one of my biggest supports, she listens to the episodes, gives me feedback, and shares the podcast with her friends. On this episode, I have a conversation with my Mum and we talk about all of this. She explains her points of view around abortion, and tells us which parts of my views make her uncomfortable. We talk about our relationship, especially around our roles as mother and daughter, and how to adjust our expectations of each other, and be able to respect that we are both adults with our own opinions and experiences. Trigger warning: while in general my mother believes that abortions are necessary and need to be legal and available, there are still certain areas where she draws the line. Some of the things she says may be considered stigmatising, specifically around people having more than one abortion, and people who, according to my mum, view abortions as a "nonchalant" thing. On this episode, Jess and I talk about what it's like to build a career around abortion, and how to make boundaries between your work and your personal life. Jess lives in Texas, USA and works in abortion advocacy. We start the conversation by talking a bit about the Texas Abortion Ban, Senate Bill 8 (SB8), and the implications that it has on abortion seekers and those supporting abortion seekers. We then move on to talk about working for others hand having to compromise your values in order to get paid, navigating conversations about abortion outside of work, rethinking movement work in a way that centres community and pleasure, and preserving your energy. Jess Pires-Jancose (she/they) is a cancer who loves plants, queer young-adult fantasy, skincare, and having deep meaningful conversations with strangers and loved ones. In their professional life, Jess is a community organiser with Avow, a Texas-based organisation that promotes unapologetic abortion advocacy. On this episode, Daniela talks about the essay she wrote, “on heartbreak and longing and hope”. We talk about how being an activist means getting your heart broken over and over, and having to recognise and tend to the heartbreak in order to create a sustainable movement. We discuss the value of political homes, how we practice hope, and the importance of having boundaries and allowing ourselves to takes breaks and rest from political work.Daniela Tejas Miguez (she/her): Runner, embroiderer, chingona, and bisexual. An introduction to the new season of Abortion, with loveCheck out the new website!!www.abortionwithlove.com
The album was created as part of a campaign to decriminalise abortion in the Philippines, and is a collaboration between the Women's Global Network for Reproductive Rights, the Filipino Free Thinkers, and the Philippine Safe Abortion Advocacy Network. The album is a collection of 12 songs of different genres written and performed by local Filipino artists. Pasya celebrates the strength of people who stand up against patriarchal and oppressive systems and exercise their body autonomy. It's a call to all people who have had abortions, who have been silenced by stigma, to show them they are not alone. It's a labour of love - a hug to everyone who has had an abortion. On this episode I talk to Tao and MuroAmi, two Filipino artists who were part of the creation of Pasya. They share the process of creating the album, how music can be a medium to channel rage, the fear of speaking publicly about abortion in a country where abortion is criminalised, and the message they hope the album brings. For the Lives of All Women / Pela Vida Das Mulheres, is a photography book by Camila Cavalcante. It's a collection of photos and stories of 30 Brazilian women who have had abortions, along with a selection of essays by researchers and activists. In this episode, Camila tells us about the process of creating this book, and her experience of listening to the stories of women who have had abortions in a country where abortion is highly restricted and stigmatised. She talks about why she includes herself in the photos, and the symbolic value of her presence, and nudity in the photographs. “What's an Abortion, Anyway?” is a medically accurate, non-judgmental, and gender inclusive resource for young folks about abortion care. In this book, little ones will learn what an abortion is, some of the reasons people have abortions and a few of the ways people might feel about their abortions. On this episode, Carly Manes & Mar, creators of the book, talk about their experiences with writing the book and about the importance of talking to young people about abortion. Isabel is an acompañante, an abortion doula, living in Argentina and working internationally. On this episode we talk about what it means to be a doula, particularly what that means when working remotely. We also discuss the ways that doulas are demedicalising abortion care, centering the care on the individual and their own needs, making abortions more accessible, and kind of thinking about abortion in a more holistic way, taking into consideration all the other facets of abortion that aren't just the medical procedure. Conscientious Objection, when doctors refuse to provide abortion care due to their personal beliefs, is one of the biggest barriers that Italian people face in accessing abortion. Even though abortion has been legal since 1978, Article 9 of that law introduces the right to conscientious objection for the health personnel involved in activities that are specific and necessary for an abortion, but not to activities that are performed before or after the abortion. Nevertheless, many healthcare professionals use conscientious objection as an excuse to deny contraceptives and pre- and post- abortion services to people who need them. Approximately 70% of gynaecologists in Italy are objectors. Objection Respinta is a transfeminist and intersectional project that maps conscientious objection in Italy. A network made up of students, midwives, doctors and activists, women, and people who have and have not necessarily faced the stigma of abortion and conscientious objection in their lives. In this episode I talk to Eleonora and Bianca who talk about the work that they are doing and read to us two testimonies from their website. In February 2020, openDemocracy released the results of a nine-month, worldwide investigation into a global network of anti-abortion misinformation projects, as part of a larger project titled 'Tracking the Backlash'. Through follow-the-money research and undercover reporting, openDemocracy found over 700 'crisis pregnancy centres' that were spreading misleading information and manipulating vulnerable people. They traced these clinics back to two major U.S. Christian right groups, both of which enjoy significant political packing and financial support.Khatondi Soita Wepukhulu, one of the journalists working for this project in Uganda, talks about her experience working as an undercover reporter and going into crisis pregnancy centres. She shares some of the things she witnessed while pretending to be experiencing an unwanted pregnancy and looking for information on abortion, and what the situation is like for Ugandan people seeking abortions. Everyone has a fundamental right to sexual and bodily autonomy, including the right to decide whether or when to become a parent, parent the children we have, and to do so with dignity and free from violence and discrimination. However, trans people have historically been denied these rights, since pregnancy, parenthood, and abortion continue to be seen as something that only affects ciswomen. On this episode, A.J. Lowik will discuss the ways that trans people have been excluded from receiving dignified reproductive healthcare, what trans reproductive justice looks like, and why it is important to ensure the inclusion of trans people in abortion politics. On this episode, we use the term 'trans' as an umbrella term to include transgender, transsexual, non-binary, genderqueer, gender neutral/agender, and gender non-conforming identities and experiences. We use the word 'cis-' to describe those whose gender identity matches with the sex they were assigned at birth. Links:A.J. On this episode, Beth, an abortion advocate with many years working alongside healthcare professionals, will give us an introduction on the vacuum aspiration method, also known as in-clinic abortions or procedural abortions**edit: after the release of this episode I learnt that using the phrase 'surgical abortion' to describe the vacuum aspiration method is misleading and inaccurate, because the procedure isn't a surgery and doesn't involve any cutting or suturing. In this episode we use the phrase surgical abortion, but from now on the podcast uses procedural abortion or in-clinic abortion to refer to abortions conducted through vacuum aspiration.
