Research data obtained from animal experimentation and extrapolated to human conditions is unreliable and ineffective, and delays progress for human health. Animal-based research and teaching represents unnecessarily cruel, empirically compromised and unethical treatment of non-consenting sentient beings. The replacement of animals with validated non-animal methods will facilitate scientifically reliable, effective, empirically valid research outcomes. AFSA recognises that some research, such as observation of wild animals for conservation purposes, is non-invasive, and that in some circumstances, veterinary research or training can be conducted without harm to animals. Whilst we advocate for animal-free research, we accept that under very limited conditions, animal use may be permissible, when in the interests of the individual animal/s used in such research. Put simply, they disagree with any harmful use of animals in science What is ‘harmful use'? Any use of animals that cause pain, suffering, distress, or lasting negative impact, including death—without any clear benefit to the animals themselves. Note: even if the research conducted is not considered harmful, the laboratory environment itself can cause suffering and the prevention of natural behaviors and thus be detrimental. ====================== FOLLOW THE SHOW ON: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@plantbasedbriefing Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2GONW0q2EDJMzqhuwuxdCF?si=2a20c247461d4ad7 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/plant-based-briefing/id1562925866 Your podcast app of choice: https://pod.link/1562925866 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PlantBasedBriefing LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/plant-based-briefing/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/plantbasedbriefing/ #vegan #plantbased #plantbasedbriefing #veterinarians #animalcare #vettech #animaladvocate #vegantrauma #vystopia
This episode delves into the compelling story of the Richmond 16, a group of conscientious objectors during World War I. Using articles and excerpts from Wikipedia, the host explores the circumstances and moral convictions that led these men to refuse participation in the war, even under immense pressure and threat of execution. The episode discusses their imprisonment at Richmond Castle, the resilience they exhibited through adversity, the political implications of their stand, and the aftermath of their hard labor sentences in France. It also touches on how their legacy has been preserved and re-examined in recent historical works, documentaries, and films. The powerful narrative challenges viewers to consider the true meaning of courage, patriotism, and the impact of standing by one's convictions.00:00 Introduction to the Richmond 1600:12 The Context of World War I00:45 Conscientious Objection and the Richmond 1602:22 Life in Richmond Castle03:45 Transfer to France and Court Martial06:55 Aftermath and Legacy10:51 Modern Reflections and Controversies13:21 Final Thoughts and Conclusion Hosted on Acast. This episode sees our two heroes on a quest to find out what in god's name has gone wrong with the Broncos. Switching gears there's always grappling in the Olympics and home town favourite, poor old Anthony Ammirati is grappling with an early exit from the pole vault...but let's be honest the 21 year old may have lost the battle, but he's definitely won the war. Not one to sit around and console himself with a baguette or two, his Instagram followers have grown faster than a honeymooners horn. They celebrate the good, the bad and the ugly of the Olympic coverage and pay homage to our athletes. One fella they continually celebrate is the hard running Graeme Annersley, who again has wowed the sporting faithful with another term Rugby League didn't know it needed. The 'Sleeper'. Most likely not a reference to our country's escalating terror threat, but something the HRGA felt needed to be part of the repertoire in his weekly Monday rules explanation extravaganza. Player movements at the moment are like an Ornythorincus - they exist but are rarely seen. Oils might be oils according to Lawsy, but according Ash Klein a Head High certainly ain't a Head High. The NRL's top 50 most influential people have been announced .... ...Fortunately for their egos , our two knuckleheads are destined to operate in the shadows. Board a boat, sans latrine, and sail down the crusty waters of Rugby League's La Seine with two absolute half wits as the Grapple through life's merde.

In our second conversation on Canada's euthanasia regime, we chat with a Canadian doctor about the troubling expansion of Medical Assistance in Dying to those only suffering from mental illness. Can the families of mentally struggling patients be confident their loved ones will be met with compassion and a commitment to long-term treatment from their doctors, or will they simply be shuffled off to the quick and easy assisted suicide programme? How easy or difficult is it for doctors, including Christians, who reject euthanasia to continue to practice within Canadian hospitals? And what might the future look like if Christians in healthcare stood firm and demanded space to continue to practice pro-life, hope-filled medicine? Accounts of the Second World War usually involve tales of exceptional bravery in battle, as the allied nations stood together against fascism. But from the eyes of the 60,000 conscientious objectors who refuse to take up arms, the war looks extremely different - a perception of which has almost been entirely forgotten. A conscientious objector not only faced inordinate public scrutiny from their fellow countrymen, but even from their own families, often being viewed as cowards. But how accurate was that belief? In this episode, James is joined by author Tobias Kelly who delves into why these people could not in good conscious, pick up arms, and how it changed their lives forever. Some faced jail time, others took up non-combat roles on the front lines - the scenes of which stayed with them long past the war. The 60,000 conscientious objectors role's in the War have often been overlooked in history, but their contribution to the wartime effort is now finally being discussed in a hopes to change common misconceptions. For more Warfare content, subscribe to our Warfare Wednesday newsletter here.If you'd like to learn even more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - enter promo code WARFARE for 7 days free + 50% off your first three months' subscription. Church of England vicars Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin get together to offer a spiritual perspective on current events being joined by special guest Laura Dodsworth. This week: How to apply the teachings of Christ on non-judgmentalism to unjust political situations and commentary on the ending of Covid restrictions and the Bishop of London's response to the situation. With Laura we discuss the ongoing totalitarianism of Justin Trudeau and the Canadian Federal Government with respect to the Truckers' Freedom Convoy including the seizing of citizens' bank accounts and the violent militarised police action taken to break up the protest in Ottawa. We talk about the way that Covid-19 restrictions are resulting in mission-creep particularly with respect to central bank digital currencies. We also ask how the Canadian government's response can square with notions of liberal democracy and respect for free speech and political expression. Is the term "liberalism" meaningful or should we be speaking more in terms of the individual and the collective? Laura also wants to know why the figureheads of the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches seem to have very little conception of the notion of conscience with respect to certain medical treatments beginning with the letter "v".And, after a notorious billboard advocating the removal of JK Rowling from considerations of her own Harry Potter world, Laura goes full-on Old Testament prophetic. We've lost Afghanistan to the Taliban and China, and our allies are still stranded there. No one is saying we should've stayed in Afghanistan but the way we pulled out is making the rest of the world watching us wonder if we are incompetent or negligent. Senator Biden is not cut out to be President. Thomas D. As medical technology advances and the values at the heart of our society change, health professionals can often find their own values clashing with the demands of clinical specialties and employers. Whether that is being involved with abortions, new fertility technologies, or end of life care decisions, we may all, regardless of faith or other beliefs and values, find ourselves asking 'should I really be doing this?'Freedom of conscience has long been a cherished value in our culture and our health professions, but it is increasingly coming under attack. We are told we should do whatever the patient needs, whatever our personal ethical and conscience problems may be.Today, I am talking with Melody Redman and Mark Pickering about this increasingly fraught topic, and looking at why conscience matters, how we develop and inform our conscience and how we practically and thoughtfully live and work with our colleagues, patients and leaders in line with our values and without violating our consciences.Resources:CMF File 39 - the doctor's conscienceCMF Blogs on conscience issuesA Guide to Christianity for NHS employersReligion, morality, ethics, and war [for reflections on 'moral injury']GMC - GMC Personal beliefs and medical practiceNMC - Conscientious objection by nurses, midwives and nursing associatesSupport the show (https://cmf.li/Give)

Conscientious Objection, when doctors refuse to provide abortion care due to their personal beliefs, is one of the biggest barriers that Italian people face in accessing abortion. Even though abortion has been legal since 1978, Article 9 of that law introduces the right to conscientious objection for the health personnel involved in activities that are specific and necessary for an abortion, but not to activities that are performed before or after the abortion. Nevertheless, many healthcare professionals use conscientious objection as an excuse to deny contraceptives and pre- and post- abortion services to people who need them. Approximately 70% of gynaecologists in Italy are objectors. Objection Respinta is a transfeminist and intersectional project that maps conscientious objection in Italy. A network made up of students, midwives, doctors and activists, women, and people who have and have not necessarily faced the stigma of abortion and conscientious objection in their lives. In this episode I talk to Eleonora and Bianca who talk about the work that they are doing and read to us two testimonies from their website. Is there a difference between conscientious objection and civil-uncivil disobedience- Pastor John MacArthur refused to submit to the California governor's mandate, and his church opened for services on Sunday. The media loves civil-uncivil disobedience when it comes to the ungodly organizations like Antifa and BLM. How does the church avoid these anarchical and rebellious elements, and yet retain the right to conscientiously object to an order that would violate God's law-

In his recently published memoir "Writing Straight With Crooked Lines" (2020), Jim Forest writes about growing up during the Cold War the child of two Communists, his struggles with marriage, and his spiritual quest, which led him to working with Dorothy Day at the Catholic Worker in the early sixties and to befriending some of the twentieth century's most famous spiritual leaders, including Thomas Merton, Phil and Daniel Berrigan, and Thich Nhat Hanh. Jim spent over a year in jail for protesting the Vietnam War, and he co-founded the Catholic Peace Fellowship with Tom Cornell (still in operation today), which helped thousands of Catholics to register their dissent as conscientious objectors during the Vietnam War. But that's just the beginning. This interview wasn't nearly long enough, but Nancy had made dinner, and well, it was growing cold, so we covered what we could! MOVIE REVIEW: More often than not, when talking to other Christians who enjoy cinema they bring up Terrence Malick. In fact, when I visited Florida for a job opportunity, I had this exact thing happen to me. At the time, I hadn't seen a single Malick film, but I started to get some serious Malick FOMO when I saw The Tree of Life end up on a ton of "Best of the Decade" lists. Thankfully, I was near a theater showing A Hidden Life, the auteur's 10th film, and made it a priority to grab a ticket. Considering the premise of the film - the persecution of a man of faith who resists swearing allegiance to Hitler - I considered it a fairly appropriate film to review this week, so here we are. Let's dive in, and let me tell you what I thought about A Hidden Life! Tune in weekly for new episodes of Cinematic Doctrine! A Hidden Life is Rated PG-13 for thematic material including violent images. It features August Diehl, Valerie Pachner, Maria Simon, Tobias Moretti, Ulrich Matthes, and Fanz Rogowski. The Center on Conscience & War's Maria Santelli & Bill Gavin show the Selective Service registration to be an outdated, inefficient, inadequate $25M-a-year system to muster troops violates. Plus it violates the rights to freedom of conscience & religion with extra-judicial, unconstitutional penalties without due process. We discuss the above and our nation's inconsistent policies and court rulings on freedom of conscience and religion as they pertain to war, cake art, abortion, and conception. Learn how this opportunity came up. Click Link to Act today BEFORE 2020!Let the commission know you think:1) Draft registration should be ended for everyone, not extended to women;2) All criminal, civil, federal and state penalties for failure to register must be ended and overturned to protect rights to freedom of conscience & religion for those currently living under these penalties;3) National service should remain voluntary. Compulsory service, whether civilian or military, is in conflict with the principles of a democratic republic and free society;4) IF the draft registration is not ended, provide a check box or mechanism to document Conscientious Objection to combat or military participation to protect rights of freedom of religion and conscience while satisfying requirements and avoiding extra-judicial civil, federal and state penalties.Links:Comment Form for National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service Center on Conscience & War (CCW) Coalition Summary and Points for Ending Draft RegistrationCommission email: national.commission.on.service.info@mail.milSUBJECT LINE IF EMAILING: Docket 05-2018-01Extra-Judical Penalties that Violate Rights to Religion & Conscience by StateCCW Links Related to Draft & Selective ServiceYes, we know there's a House Bill. What if a law was passed that doctors had to obey the military? Would that make it right to apply their skill and knowledge to evil purposes? Medicines posits very high moral values. Some of the highest. Medical practitioners are at the service of their patients, but not at the service of disease. We seek firstly to do no harm, and secondly to do good. There are laws before NSW Parliament that liberalise Abortion and co-opt doctors to be agents for the industry. What ought doctors to do in this situation? Terrence Malick's new film, "A Hidden Life," debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May (2019). The movie is about Franz Jaggerstatter, an Austrian farmer and a Catholic who refused to serve in Hitler's army and, as a result, was executed on Aug. 9, 1943. In this episode, Jack Gilroy, a founding member of the American group "Friends of Franz," gives us the inside scoop on how the story of Franz's witness came to be known and why Franz's wife, Franziska, at the age of 94, was seen riding in the sidecar of a motorcycle in 2007! In February 1943, hundreds of German women joined in a spontaneous protest in central Berlin. They were objecting to the roundup of some of the city's last Jews -- their husbands. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe the Rosenstrasse protest, a remarkable example of civil disobedience. We'll also ponder whether a computer can make art and puzzle over some unusual phone calls. President Trump is about to rule on an opportunity to protect healthcare workers who object to certain responsibilities based on their conscience, and hopefully free people who don’t want to perform abortions based on their personal convictions. Why does this matter? Let’s talk about it. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/heidistjohn/support
Conscientious Objection and Value Pluralism in Medicine
Ashton DeFusco was a very young, highly motivated Marine eager to deploy. She joined the military searching for honor and courage, and she found it; but not in the way she expected. While in Afghanistan, something happened that made Ashton have a change of heart and she became a pacifist, completely opposed to war and all forms of violence. In this interview, Hannah McNeely and Evan Oliver talk to her about her story and learn what it looks like for a soldier to leave the military by convincing the most elite military branch in the U.S. of her newfound beliefs. See our blog post at www.earthtous.com to see pictures of Ashton and a copy of the essay she wrote to apply for conscientious objection.
Panel discussion at a conference on conscientious objection in medicine and the role of conscience in healthcare practitioners’ decision making, Oxford 2015. The conference aimed at analyzing from a philosophical, ethical and legal perspective the meaning and the role of “conscience” in the healthcare profession. Conscientious objection by health professionals has become one of the most pressing problems in healthcare ethics. Health professionals are often required to perform activities that conflict with their own moral or religious beliefs (for example abortion). Their refusal can make it difficult for patients to have access to services they have a right to and, more in general, can create conflicts in the doctor-patient relationship. The widening of the medical options available today or in the near future is likely to sharpen these conflicts. Experts in bioethics, philosophy, law and medicine explored possible solutions.

If one had a philosophical or religious objection to military service, why would they volunteer? The modern CO application, as it's called, comes from those who sign up for service, but come to their conscientious objection during their tour of duty, like Dante Searcy and Fanny Garcia who tell us their stories of being granted “CO” status on this program. Also on this program, we hear from Maria Santelli, the Executive Director of the Center on Conscience and War, an organization that began in 1940 and today offers assistance to people like Searcy and Garcia to prepare their Conscientious Objection applications that go before Pentagon Panels for review. We placed three calls over the course of a week to the public affairs office at the Pentagon to get the Defense Department take on the Conscientious Objector discussion, but no one returned our calls.

Guest: Julie Cantor, MD, JD Host: Michael Greenberg, MD and Larry Kaskel, MD Friends and family of Dr. George Tiller recently laid the prominent abortion physician to rest, after he was shot and killed while serving as usher during a Sunday church service in Wichita, Kansas. Authorities have charged a man with murder in the case, but Dr. Tiller's death has sparked a fresh debate about the role of physicians and other health care providers in abortion cases, as well as other areas of medicine where moral and religious convictions may overlap with our duty to the health and well-being of our patients. One aspect of this debate revolves around efforts from the administration of President George W. Bush to bolster federal conscience protection statutes for health care providers, regulations which were implemented by the department of Health and Human Services in the final weeks of his time in the White House. The Obama administration began the process of determining whether to rescind the regulations. For more insight into the legal wrangling over this issue, hosts Dr. Michael Greenberg and Dr. Larry Kaskel welcome Dr. Julie Cantor, adjunct professor of law at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Kaskel and Dr. Greenberg will also delve into concerns about health insurance adminstration, sharing ...
The appalling death toll of the First World War and the need for a sense of equality of sacrifice on the home front led to Canada's first experience of overseas conscription. The backlash against enforced military service in Quebec was, and has been historically seen as the great threat to the wartime vision of national unity. This has obscured the important role of “conscientious objectors,” those who saw military service as incompatible with their religious or ethical beliefs. The speaker argues that the experiences of these young men offer insight into evolving attitudes about the rights and responsibilities of citizenship during a key period of Canadian nation building. A claim of conscientious exemption to a war widely seen as holy was difficult both for the individual to make and for wider Canadian society to understand. As well, the speaker argues, the negative stereotype of the conscientious objector illuminates expectations of appropriate masculine behavior, while encompassing a sense that the claims of certain individuals and denominations were more justifiable than others. Speaker: Dr. Amy Shaw Amy Shaw is an Assistant Professor at the Department of History, University of Lethbridge. Since arriving at U of L in 2005, she has taught courses in Canadian history, including “Canada: War and Peace”, “Canada in two World Wars” and Canadian cultural history. Dr. Shaw's current research includes the activities of Canadian women during the First World War. Educated in Ontario, Dr. Shaw earned her University degrees from York, (B.A.) McMaster (M.A.) and her Ph.D. in 2005 from Western Ontario. Her book, Crisis of Conscience: Conscientious Objection in Canada during the First World War, has just been published by the University of British Columbia Press.
Jeff Patterson works as staff of the anti-war, peace organization, "Not in Our Name". He was a war resistor in 1990. Although he had been in the Marines for 4 years and was a Corporal he refused to go fight in the war against Iraq even though he only had a few remaining weeks before he was due to be discharged from the Marines. He spent some time in prison and has since been working for peace. Among the many ways in which he does this is that he often speaks to high school students encouraging them to not join the military and advising them about conscientious objection.
