No estamos solos. Somos más que vencedores, incluso en medio del dolor.

In January – just one day after Trump was certified as the next president by Congress, a massive Border Patrol raid took place in Bakersfiled, California. Seventy-eight migrant workers were detained under the guise of a crack down on criminals, but when the dust settled the data revealed that only one out of the 78 people detained had any criminal record. Joining us to discuss are Bree Bernwanger, a senior staff attorney with the ACLU of Northern California and lead attorney on United Farm Workers v. Noem, a lawsuit which claims the Border Patrol violated the plaintiffs' Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable searches and seizures, as well as their Fifth Amendment right to due process, and other federal laws, during the raids described above. We're also joined by Sergio Olmos, an investigative reporter for CalMatters, whose latest reporting, along with our next guest, focuses on the same Border Patrol actions in Bakersfield that are being challenged in the lawsuit that I previously mentioned. And we're additionally joined by Wendy Fry, a multimedia investigative journalist who reports on poverty and inequality for the California Divide team at CalMatters, who has been collaborating with Sergio in covering the Border Patrol Bakersfield raids. Check out the CalMatters coverage of this story here: https://calmatters.org/justice/2025/04/border-patrol-to-retrain-hundreds-of-california-agents-on-how-to-comply-with-the-constitution/ Learn more about the lawsuit UFW v.

Tread Perilously heads back to the 1980s for a month of shows from that glorious decade. First up: a Miami Vice episode called "Bushido." When a joint operation with the DEA goes south, Captain Martin Castillo suspects his old friend Jack Gretsky may have interfered with the bust to get his attention. Soon, he visits the local CIA office to confirm and, rather quickly, confronts Gretsky, leading to the man's death. But with $500,000 of the DEA's money missing and the location of Gretsky's wife and son unknown, Castillo embraces the way of the warrior to solve all of the outstanding mysteries. Erik and Justin return to Miami Vice for the first time in nearly a decade -- but their recent study of Michael Mann gives them fresh eyes. Star and episode director Edward James Olmos is the easy MVP for stylish filmmaking and appearing in nearly every scene. A gaggle of surprise guest stars suggests the real reason Erik chose this episode six or so years ago. The pair imagine what The Shield's Strike Team would do in a Thief situation. Justin comes to believe Castillo is a wizard and finds more than one connection to Burn Notice. Also: special attention is given to Olmos's mustache.

I'm joined here with fabb_999 on this episode reviewing "American Me" directed and produced by Edward James Olmos who shows us a life of a man who's spent half his life in the prison system, trying to reclaim himnself in society after he gets out. It's a very masculine but truly humbling film. Olmos did a great job showing us that he can not only act, but direct as well. I was impressed with the shots he used in the film, some that I pondered as to why he would use it and I understood why. He's a creative indivisual and gave us something DIFFERENT to look at. Faby and I talk about about film, it's explosive cast of characters, the iconic one-liners, it's controversies, the elements of theater displayed into the film, the way lighting is used to make things look realistic, how a film like this still resonates to this day spreading its message beyond East Los Angeles, beyond Folsom State, beyond California period. It's a powerful film by Olmos and a story of this kind needed to be told. It's important that even in filmmaking, we need to be a melting pot of sorts of sharing stories that created a culture that is still powerful to today's societal means.Four out of four tokes.#americanme #edwardjamesolmos

At first glance, there wasn't much to the mild and unassuming Jerry Brudos; however, when investigators looked into his background, they discovered several arrests for theft, prowling, and sexual assault. And the more they learned about Brudos' life, the more certain they became that he was the man they were looking for.Ultimately, Jerry Brudos was convicted of the murders of Jan Whitney, Karen Sprinker, and Linda Salee and given three life sentences. His capture and incarceration were a big relief to the women of Oregon, but his cooperation with law enforcement and the FBI would prove invaluable as the latter established what would eventually become the Behavioral Analysis Unit.ReferencesAssociated Press. 1969. Over the course of 1968 and well into 1969, several young women in Salem, Oregon went missing and would later turn up dead—all murdered and showing signs of having been tortured. Many of the cases bore certain similarities, but it wasn't until investigators questioned the friends of one of the victims, Karen Sprinker, that they came to identify a suspect and eventually arrested thirty-year-old Jerome “Jerry” Brudos. At first glance, there wasn't much to the mild and unassuming Jerry Brudos; however, when investigators looked into his background, they discovered several arrests for theft, prowling, and sexual assault.
